Advice needed on applying for jobs due to quit

I had hoped I would not be in the process of looking for another job but here I am.  My question is this.  I left my last job of 3 years as I lost my father about a month ago whose health began declining on Thanksgiving.  My employer was well aware of this as a doctor's excuse to excuse my absence was unacceptable and our doctor had to fill out the FMLA paperwork which still ended up not being good enough.  Go figure.  I called my supervisor the morning that I found my father and told her what had happened and I could not work.  She said that was fine and went on to explain that the company gives three day bereavement pay which honestly was the furthest thing from my mind.  She then asked me if I thought I needed 3 days off and had I not been in shock, I probably would have let her have it.  Hello, this was my dad not my dog.  How heartless can you be?  She said with work volumes (which by the way, they were telling other girls to flex their shift due to low work volume) they could not have me out three days.  I was soo upset after her asking me that that I sent an email to human resources and the head of the company and boy was I reamed out by human resources for doing this as she said it was none of the head of the company's business.  Why not?  It is one of his employees who said this.  In sending my resume and filling out applications, when they ask why I left this heartless company, what do I say?  Am i being unreasonable and maybe should have stayed with this company?  I'm questioning myself alot lately but still not sleeping well.  I have filed for unemployment.  I live in Pennsylvania and I pray that I get it because we have a 9 month old daughter and we need the income.  I know if I have to appeal it, I will not hesitate.   Forgive me for rambling, maybe I just needed to vent, I don't know.  Just needed an opinion or advice.  feel free to e-mail me.

ADVICE NEEDED

Does anyone know a company that offers FT benefits based on achieving specified line count rather than having to work certain number of hours? In other words, if I can produce the # of lines required in less than an eight hour time frame, I have the option of quitting for the day.

Advice needed
I had an account where the person in the client's office changed my reports to make me look bad. E.g. They changed 12 minute tourniquet time to 12 hours. She took it to the boss and the boss faxed it to me. After I objected and told the boss that that wasn't the way I sent it in and I proved that my time stamp didn't match the altered time stamp on the computerized record,  we devised a backup folder where all of my reports would be placed with my time stamp and if the report was altered we would know. So the boss realized that there was a person doing maliciious mischief in her office but she didn't fire that person. So since then, there has been an ongoing assault on my work and whenever anything is perceived as late or wrong, I get a nasty e-mail from the offending office worker. So after all of the negative going on, the boss gave me a month's notice that my services would not be required anymore and that another person was going to phase in and I was supposed to pick up the slack during that month. Well, I did not like that and did not continue with the account. Here's my question, should I see legal counsel for the alterting of my reports and possible HIPAA violations? TIA
My advice to you is start applying with other companies
Cobra is extremely expensive and you have to qualify for Medicaid.  It is usually for indigent people.  I think it also takes a while to get qualified.  If you get on with a new company and you currently have insurance, you usually don't have a waiting period with your new insurance coverage like you do if you let it lapse.  I've seen ads inviting displaced Heartland MTs to apply with companies.
I Quit because they upped the lines needed and (sm)

I used to get 1200 or more per day.  Then they fiddled with the line counter and after that, my lines dropped to 700-900 a day.  No matter what I did, I never got close to the 1200 a day. When I asked them how many hours I could work during the day, they told me I could NOT work more than 8 hours. So after after a while, I became very depressed, even a little paranoid, and just couldn't take the low pays any more and quit. I'm still trying to dig out of the hole money-wise that they helped dig. I should have quit earlier than I did, but tried to hang in there hoping things would get better. I did like it there.

BTW, I was on an account that at 90% ESL. The instant messaging and mandatory conference calls and/or voluntary conference calls drove me up the wall after a while.

I will agree, their holidays and benefits are pretty decent and some of the people were great to work with. Also, the nice thing about IM'g was that you knew you weren't alone and you could always get an answer to a question almost instantly  by IM'g somebody else.  They are also VERY supportive and understanding when it comes to family problems.

This is just me. You may love it there. You may have great everything. The only thing I can say is try it. There's always those 2 little words I quit.

Applying for jobs
Do you tell them how much money you want? Sometimes if you do that they do NOT respond -- you may be asking too much. I have applied for five jobs and have heard from all five.
I have been applying for jobs

and I would certainly like to know the name of this employer!  I never want to work there.

I absolutely would contact the labor board in the state you live and then notify your supervisor of your intent.

I would type an e-mail to your sup and copy yourself that says your complete side of the story, just like you explained here, and then ask for an explanation as to how they are withholding lines from your paycheck.

Keep all correspondances!!!!!!  Also, trying and print the IM if you can!

Just finished applying to 35 different jobs
I am so fed up with my current company that I just can't take it anymore! I decided to spend the time I normally would be working to applying to any jobs.

This is the best site to find EVERY transcription company whether they are hiring or not the list is endless and I just copy and paste my resume on the site if they didn't have testing. This is the site http://www.tiptopwebsite.com/websites/index2.php?username=mtjobfind&page=1.

I found it in archives here and it's such a great tool!

I did my best today and put myself out there, I once thought to just get out of MT but I think I'm going to just go all in as I just work when I feel, pretty much PT but now I'm going in headfirst full-time, really going to make the most of this education I paid for, why not!

So here's hoping javascript:editor_insertHTML('text','');
Is it getting harder for anyone to get jobs now with all the people applying for them. How does
this seem to be going for most MTs looking for jobs.  What seems to be the one factor that gets MTs a job before all the other 100 or so looking for the same job and what are the most desired qualities today that companies are looking for.
I wish people would just stop applying for these low paying jobs!
That would force them to pay better or do it themselves. When I did QA for 3 years I was paid $20 an hour in addition to a line rate of 4 cents a line. I often ended up typing part of the report because there were so many errors. I would never work for 3 cents a line doing anything! Just my 2 cents...
There are so many MT jobs available that I feel we will be needed for a long time. There may be
some updating, but that will be fine.  I feel MT will be here many, many years to come!!!!!
Does anybody work two jobs? Advice please :)

I work as an employee for a company with a 12-hour window, 40 hours a week, Monday through Friday, 1200 lines per day minimum.  I've been offered something local to do on my own, approximately 1200 lines per day of work, but I would have the entire 24 hours to do it.

If I get my first job done at 1 p.m., I could get the other lines done in 5-6 hours max.  Geez...I don't know.  I'm probably going to kill myself doing this, aren't I?  I was just calculating this as I was typing and didn't realize what a long day that would be.

Does anybody else do this?  If so, how is it working for you?   Do you feel burned out?  I would really like to manage this somehow but want to be realistic.  Any advice from someone who has done this or is successfully making something like this work would be appreciated!   The extra money would be soooo nice right now.

Need advice on changing jobs too!
I've been working for this company since November and have not gotten up to speed yet to meet 1200 lpd.  Normally, when I start a new job it only takes a week if that to be meeting production.  The software ExText, I was already familiar with.  However, I was placed on an Hem/Onc Childrens Hospital account, the terminology of which I am not experienced.  The benefits for this company are good, i.e. health, PTO, and such, but it pays only 8.5 cpl.  In discussing my dilema with them, they have offered to place me on a regular acute care hospital account, M-F day shift.  However, I have been offered an IC position for 10 cpl with another company.  What would you guys do.  I do need the health ins from the employee position.
I say you all get other jobs and quit

at the same time, in protest  (if you can).  Tell your new prospective employer(s) about the circumstances and make sure they only call to verify your employment from HR, not check references, so your supervisors do not know.  Make sure you don't burn your bridges, but remember that without you, they will struggle.  Who would guess I'm a hospital MT who belongs to a huge union

To MTs looking for jobs - pls do not quit the one you

I've posted recently, and my situation has not improved much, so...

Please, if you can, especially this time of year, do not resign from your old job until you are fully up and running and have enough work on your new job.  I am still disappointed with my MTSO, and at the same time glad that I kept my former job.  Frankly, the MTSO seems nonchalante about the whole thing - oh it's slow this time of year.  Slow is one thing, but no work at all on many days is another.  So what if I had quit my former job and relied on you, I keep thinking.

I know of a few looking for other jobs. I doubt that they will "officially" quit.

You will just notice that not as many people are logging on any longer. They are tired of waiting for work and are picking up other jobs. I personally know two that have other jobs they are working while looking for FT employment with someone else.

So quit - there are plenty of jobs for good MTs. sm
If you think truly they suck, find somewhere else.
Then quit. There are other jobs out there. Only you have the power to change your situation.

Wont be changing hours..just jobs. I quit!!!
There are plenty enough companies out there who do not off-shore. I never thought much about it before because it didnt seem to effect me, but now it does, so I'm gone.
Good advice, and advice that I'm giving real thought to ...

If I had known that they offshored before I accepted employment with them I never would have gone there to work.  I've been here long enough now though to not want to lose my benefits.

Still ... making a DECENT PAYCHECK and making a living without being stressed out over the type of work that I'm doing is just as important as good benefits.

I just quit Medquist, hired by Etrans and quit them after one afternoon during the last two weeks!sm
Medquist made me buy a new computer to go to the "Docuscribe" system that was so much better than cottage.  When I got there I took a real big pay cut to the tune of probably 30 to 40%.  I was getting paid gross lines doing Cedars-Sinai operative reports.  I asked for more per line and my supervisor just laughed and said you think were going to pay you $0.12 a line to just do operative reports!  I said I quit.  I should have said F you and your mamma too:(  I had been there all together 7 years through buyouts.  I am just sick of it all.  I'm going to go sew my daughter a cute little Halloween outfit right now.
Cherrypicking is when you work from a pool of jobs and being able to reject the worst jobs to those
,
Monster Jobs and Career Builder usually have a few path jobs. nm
s
Don't think any do except for those in-house jobs. Some QA jobs are paid hourly. nm
s
They didn't take our jobs, QT gave them our jobs. The account is now
back in the hands of US MTs, or will be in just a couple of weeks.
Are MTs that are looking for jobs finding good jobs right now with everyone looking or is it
getting more difficult to find a good job.  I am most interested in jobs for experienced MTs with more than 10 years service.  I wonder if it is better to put a resume on or just keeping applying or what is the best way to go about this.
Have you tried applying for

unemployment compensation while looking for a job?  It might help to alleviate some of the pressure if you have bills to pay and might prevent you from accepting the wrong job out of desperation.

Good luck to you.

Try applying elsewhere. I have 8 yrs exp. and most
/
thanks, I was considering applying
:-)
Are you applying
to MD-IT?  All I know is I also am looking for info on this company, as they my clinic has outsourced all of our in-house transcription to them.  I have an opportunity to work for them, transcribing the same physicians/therapists that I do now.  However, they seem to not be too forthcoming with information.  I am a little leary to sign on with them, having been in-house for 14 years.  It is a little scary to me.  I do not want to sign on and then miss the opportunity for unemployment/COBRA for a while and just take a break and move on.  I don't know what to do here.  Many sleepless nights I'll tell ya that much.
Why are you considering applying to OSI?
?
Won't be applying there.

Why do companies even allow this? It only allows the lazy MTs to make more money, leaving the MTs that will actually do all types of work by all kinds of dictators to struggle to make their line counts.  This is why I am currently looking for a new job.  I am tired of the cherrypickers on my account who refuse to work the ESL docs.  You know what?  I don't like them any more than you do, but I still do it.  Why?  Because it is my job!

Sorry, just makes me so angry!

applying
I think you might have better luck sending resumes to companies who are NOT posting ads on the Job Seekers board. Looking at the number of hits their ads are getting those companies are probably already getting flooded with resumes.
Applying MT
Because they know we seasoned MTs won't just settle. Too bad we can't organize all MTs to not settle.
applying MT
I believe that transcription companies and owners do not want to pay for real transcription quality and are willing to hire the ones that will accept the 0.3 cents for QA and the 0.7 and up to 0.825 per cpl. Where is the real appreciation for the excellent transcriptionists? It seems that Transcriptionist is viewed more as a money maker.
I saw that and thought about applying.
Sylvan that's never been used, couldn't get it to load onto the computer, and couldn't get a refund for. I wouldn't want to use them again. I noticed using that software is one of the requirements.
I was thinking about applying

I work every sunday now, and I would really like my weekends free.  I also don't like the software too much, and I have to pay LD.

Thanks for all the info you gave me.

Anyone with exp w/ PMT in Kentucky? Am considering applying there. Thanks! nm
xx
Can anyone tell me anything about TTS? I am thinking about applying

Can anyone tell me anything about TTS? I am thinking about applying?
Thank you.  I appreciate your reply.
Just how aggressive should one be in applying (sm)
I have applied/tested for several companies.  So far only one has contacted me and, to be honest, they're not my first or second choice.  I did email one of the contact persons listed, was told they'd received a large number of resumes and were working through them.  Should I be sending followup emails to everyone?  Phone calls?  At what point does one become an annoyance?
I thought about applying there, but I think 6 cpl
If you go to their website, you see what they charge their clients, so they're making a bundle off of their ICs.
Applying online....
On www.mditrans.net there is a link on the left that says apply online. I don't think there is a link to apply online at the other site, just email/phone numbers if you wish to contact them.
Not Worth Applying With
I tested with them last year and spent a very long time on the test to get it just right, but they never felt the need to even respond to me with good or bad feedback.  Just ignored me completely, like you should do them.  I feel no response in either direction to an applicant says a lot for a company.  Maybe if they read this they will learn some business decent procedures and treat their applicants better.
I was thinking of applying
Do they pay more than 3 cpl for editing? I need to make some money and that's the best offer I've seen so far and it's pitiful from what I've read on the boards.
I am applying for Transtech
What is the report limit until you are released from QA at Transtech?  I need to think about how to finagle it with my present job.  Is it 5 or 10?  Thank you.
It depends on how many others are applying. I think
it took about 2-1/2 days to hear back after testing.  Evidently testing goes through a normal QA process, only it is last in line, so it may take a while based on how many others are applying.
applying to spheris
Does anyone know the name of the person in charge of recruiting new applicants, or the one who reviews application for new grads?
I thought about applying to MDI
but I have a friend who works for them and although she loves them and says the people are great, she also says the work is low a lot of time time. (She is on WAV.) She has another source of income so it is no big deal for her. Sadly, I am not in that situation. I am the breadwinner and so needed to go where there was steady work. She did say she loved them, though.
I'm on about the 5th week after applying
I am just now starting to hear back from them. Good luck!
Considering applying at DSG, any comments from MTs
working there right now about how you like it.
Try applying at Smartmed....
The last I knew, they were hiring for a large teaching hospital. The platform is okay but they pay on time and have benefits. But I think they hire first as IC and then you can go to employee status.
