Axolotl computer comes with SpeedType Expander which is the same as Shorthand

In Reply to: A contact says she likes it, sound is good, but you have to use autocorrect/text, no other expander - with the Lotus Notes. nm

Don't know where you got your information about not being able to use Exanders with Lotus, but I just started with Axolotl and the computer I got was already equipped with SpeedType  (another name for Shorthand, which means you will be able to transfer most other Expanders directly into it).  Also, I did some random character counts on reports where I used expanders a lot and ones where I had to mostly hand type, and the lines counts were right on.  You get credit for the lines whether you type it or use the expander.  Also, a lot of companies ask for computer rental -- Webmedx $250, Amphion $25 per month for 2 years, and I would much rather have their computer that I can send back if it crashes (and they will get another one to me in 24 hours) rather than have to run out and buy myself a new one in order to be able to work again.

SpeedType and ShortHand are the SAME THING

I used ShortHand at one MTSO and then when I went to another MTSO, they used SpeedType, and I saw that they were exactly the same thing.  If you have a ShortHand file, copy it to a flash drive and it will transfer to SpeedType without problem.

As far as Instant Text to ShortHand/SpeedType, I found some interesting (although getting old) information on Productivity Talk that lists conversions they have done and IT to ShortHand does not seem to be one of the easy ones.

Here is the page if anyone is interested:

http://www.productivitytalk.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=2589&pid=645995&mode=threaded&start=

This is a list of the conversions I know I can do, having done them:

DocQScribe user.aco file to a Shorthand for Windows .spf file. Here is a thread on how.

DocQScribe user.aco file to Word AutoCorrect (.acl) file. Plan to document. This one can be a little tricky.

Word AutoCorrect file to DocQScribe user.aco file.

Shorthand for Windows .spf file to Smartype for DOS file - however, I am no help on putting it into the right place in Smartype. There is a thread that should help on this last, though - see cyber luddite's posts in this thread Also, I didn't document the find and replace procedure to turn the SH.spf converted to .txt file into the Smartype format. I am going to try to get to that and amend this post later.

Shorthand for Windows .spf file to Word AutoCorrect (.acl) file. This includes the Word AC in MedRite, as stated by a member who confirmed it worked. This is also something I plan to document step-by-step.

Shorthand for Windows .spf file to DocQScribe user.aco file.

Any .txt file to Word AutoCorrect. Again, plan to document. This assumes you provide the short forms you yourself want in the text file, of course.

Instant Text .glo file to ChartScript .abr file. Not many people would want to do this, of course, but there is always a situation of changing jobs and wanting to be sure how things go before spending the money for IT, if, for instance, your previous employer had supplied you with IT. By the way, the latest revision of Instant Text V Pro (Revision 530), provides a new Importer button to convert ChartScript abbreviation files to an Instant Text glossary. DocQscribe as well, in fact. If you're curious about what else is in Revision 530, see this IT forums thread.

They use SpeedType built in to their system - works just like Shorthand.NM

Do you mean the Shorthand expander?
nm
trying to import DQS expander to Shorthand (sm)
What file do I look for and where/how do I find it?  Step by step instructions would be nice.  Thank you. :-)
ShortHand is an expander program.
www.pcshorthand.com.
Oh. I use my own expander ShortHand and it works perfectly.
No problem getting my 275 to 300+ lines an hour either.
I only use my Shorthand. I have never used the Bayscribe expander..too much trouble. nm
nm
Shorthand or ExText expander system? Which is
nm
Shorthand, any expander that works with Word
Great company to work for - some dictators are difficult to understand at first, very good compensation.
TransHealth. In fact ShortHand is the expander they recommend for use with...sm
their platform.
I am not following how you make the macro, in word? or expander like shorthand? Help me.
nm
Shorthand is a very easy expander program to import dictionaries into.
Other than that, I agree with most of what you said about Spheris.  I didn't care for them either.  They weren't completely horrible, but I was on three different accounts in less than three weeks because they kept running out of work on my primary.  I couldn't keep all those account specs straight and was off of QA after a week.  The accounts were serious ESL, and the reports were ultra short.  I couldn't make any money with them either.  I put my resume out on the MTStars database and accepted a parttime IC position with a small MTSO.  I made three times as much there per month versus what I made at Spheris.
Axolotl Does NOT use Shorthand
Axolotl uses SpeedType.  It is a great program.  It can hold up to 8-page reports.
Can Axolotl MTs use Instant Text as their expander?
I read in the archives that you have to use their computer.  Does anyone know if you can keep using Instant Text as your Expander or do you have to use their expander only?
Axolotl supplies computer, but they aren't hiring. nm

Axolotl employees....Is the computer keyboard they supply ergonomic or standard?
I am scheduled to start in about a month and am trying to prepare.  Thanks!
I use SpeedType, and it works. The only thing
is when I'm searching for something on Google, my SpeedType doesn't expand when I have the platform open. It only works in the platform. I haven't figured that one out yet but no biggy. Platform is VERY easy and user friendly.
Yes, Shorthand. They have an address datatbase that is in Shorthand, so that's what they sm
prefer you use.  nm
I wanted to use my own computer and get rid of the RENT on TT computer, but Vista is not compatible.
Good way to make them money.  Not have to upgrade software so that Vista is compatible with Vista.  Huh?
One more computer question. I got my computer today and
trying to set it up.  Man unpacking the box and setting everything up is a major undertaking; more so for me because I used a laptop before and my desk isn't tower friendly.   Anyway, no info came with the tower and I don't yet have the password to get in (paperwork says to call M-F).  Is the tower WiFi compatible?   My DSL is hooked to a different computer and I wanted to know if I can setup new computer as WiFi or if I need to move modem to new computer and set other computer up as WiFi.
Shorthand
Hi, I asked this question on the equipment board, but I haven't received any messages from anyone there, so I hope you don't mind my posting it here:

I've just started using the Shorthand expander and I love it, but I'm hoping someone will be able to tell me how to get it to capitalize the first letter of new sentences in a word document platform.  It expands better than any program I've ever used, but it doesn't cap the first letter in the sentence and it would be So helpful if it did.

If anyone can share how to do that with me, I'd really appreciate it!! Or,if it can't be done please let me know that also:)  Thanks in advance!!

Shorthand

I understand how to make a word capitalized if it's one of the entries in shorthand, but I'm talking about having the first word in any sentence come out capped even if it's not something I'm expanding.  I do appreciate your answers, I really do, but they still don't address what I'm trying to do.  I want to be able to type along and have the first letter of any given sentence be capped without doing it manually...like you normally can do when just typing along in Word and using autocorrect....except that I don't use autocorrect any longer and now use just ShortHand..and thought there must be a way to set it up to use that command of capping the first word in new sentences.  That's what I need to know about:)

For the replies about how to set this up in autocorrect, I thank you, but if you notice I'm Not using autocorrect as when I copy and paste part of a report into my Word document, the copying and pasting procedure completely turns off autocorrect...but it doesn't bother ShortHand and I can still use my expanders in ShortHand..whereas nothing will expand from autocorrect if the text has been pasted in the document.

shorthand
Can you type in emdat using shorthand? I had always heard Expanders did not work with the program and would mess it up.
Yes, I use Shorthand. I still was using PRD+ and was able sm
to convert it, so I was very happy. It is amazing how many entries you end up with.

I still think that PRD+ is better but I am used to ShortHand now.
Shorthand & TA
Although you can't use ShortHand with TA. Fast Chart can import your word list into TAspeed for you to use so you don't have to recreat your list.
Shorthand

If you are trying to get an Expander that works in windows in general (email, ftp, any program)--then I use shorthand.  I use it a lot when typing emails or anything really..good luck.

Or what about Shorthand? nm
nm
shorthand
I use MS Word the auto correct and Expanders and that seems to work fine.  What would be different if I went to Instant Text or Flash Type of one of those? And what is a good one to use?
Shorthand?
nm
Yes. I'm at TT and use Shorthand.
nm
Can you use shorthand
with IChart?  Thanks!
PC Shorthand
work very well with MediTech
with shorthand, you don't have to --sm
*fiddle with it*, it just works on it's own. I hated IT. Still have it in the box with an inch of dust on it. What a waste of a huge amount of money! with shorthand, you just start typing and any words entered into its dictionary by yu just expand on their own. Wish I had the money back I had spent on InstanText..180.00 as opposed to 29.99 ...um, gee, I don't know which to choose! *fiddling with it* to get it to work as opposed to just typing...hmmm.
Shorthand
I use ShortHand and love it.
I also use PC Shorthand...
...and really like it. It is easy to learn and easy to use. As one of the other posters said, you can get a 30-day free trial. Nothing to lose.
Why don't you just use Shorthand to...
ctrl+N/header/enter.

If you don't want to do that you can still use SH to expand into the header field. You don't have to manually type it out or pick from the list.

For numbered lists it's 1 keystroke - ctrl+L.

Very easy.

Will we be able to use our ShortHand with the new WMX VR? nm
xx
Expander
As long as it will work with Windows-based programs then whatever expander you use should work in Merit. I use Shorthand with no problems but have no experience with the one you mentioned.
expander?

I worked for a small local company, and only did proofreading, no transcripton, so I'm embarassed to say I don't even know what an expander is.

Expander
As long as your Expander is Windows-based it will work with the Merit platform.
I only use my expander, AUT.
dfsdsd
expander
I'm not a window person but their window program is easy, easy, easy. I use ShortHand as an Expander because it is not limited except by the size of your hard drive - autocorrect is limited, so rather than have everything going on at once, I disabled autocorrect and stayed strictly with Shorthand and made my own custom dict. This is truly a great company but don't play around with your schedule. If you commit to a certain time, be there. They need to know they can depend on you for TAT. I've never had a problem with them. They are great, but they do have standards like not abusing QA because you don't want to take the time to check it out yourself. Otherwise, go for it.
expander
Can you use an Expander with it?
Anyone out here with JLG, what expander do you use? (sm)

I have one that I use to help me with DQS on my full time job, but find it doesn't work that well for me with JLG and I don't want to take the chance of having it set up for JLG and then screw up my FT job.  I also haven't been able to figure JLG's out (don't laugh!) correctly and I'm looking for something else to supplement it/replace it so I can get my line count up higher (only working there part time).  What Expander works for you???

expander
The one I use is ShortHand 8.60v. Having enough money to eat is my motivator I guess!
What expander do you use?

Do you use shorthand?

expander
when people talk about extext and they use ShortHand and the built in esp, are they referring to shorthand as their own shortcuts or something different?  I don't want to sound stupid but just wanting to make sure I understand!  Thank you for your help!
expander
The platform I am on uses Instant Text ...
I don't use an expander.
It is just a really, really easy ER account with tons of work.
Expander.

I came from a company that used word perfect and honestly I loved it because I was used to it.  Setting up and using macros was easy for me and came naturally after all that time.  I have tried some free demo Expanders and have a hard time getting used to the automatic additions but I'm getting there.  I have not been impressed with the demos and can't see spending the money on the ones I've tried.  I have since been using the word auto correct and auto text.

I'm thinking about trying Instant Text from the reviews on here and other forums, but the price tag is a little put offish for me.  I don't mind putting the money into if it gives me the money in return, obviously.  Has anybody tried this and regretted the purchase?  Being Christmas time and having 3 kids and a large extended family to think about the coming month, I don't want to put this kind of money into myself, aah, y'all know what I mean.

Shortly, is it totally worth it to buy for myself at this time of the year???

can you use IT expander?
Also, does their platform come with its own expander?  Thank you all!
