line count/65 characters
Is it possible to change the number of characters that are a considered a line, i.e.
Could you redefine the line as being 50 characters. Or is this just stuck into the program at 65/line. You may E-mail if you like CTighe3568@aol.com. Your help would be greatly, greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!
usually 55 does not count spaces and that's a lot of unpaid characters. NM
.
Pick a relatively short report and do a manual count of characters

including spaces if your company counts them.  Then divide the total by 65 or whatever your lines are defined as. If there is a discrepancy between your manual count and their systematic count, you have a problem.

I did this recenty on ExText and find I am getting shorted about 1-2 lines per report.

Keystrokes accounts all count the expanders as characters printed with spaces, not the abbreviation.
I have checked it, but we use Shorthand. What are you using?
I would recommend one of the first 3 companies
stay away from Focus.
I've said which companies I'd recommend and didn't get flamed.
.
Can anyone recommend companies that offer IC status, part time?

Any good ones out there for IC's?  Part time?

Does Spheris offer IC status?

Any help appreciated!

Which companies do not count spaces?
I am wondering which ones are doing this that you know of. Thanks.
Think about it if you couldn't count spaces.... a lot of companies.....
don't count spaces.  Header information we don't transcribe anyway so why get paid for it.
Many companies manipulate the line count either with
headers or footers or some other way and blame it on the account/hospital. This is nothing new. The indians just caught on to it.

All programs can be manipulated.

My own personal opinion, I think that they are charging the client for the H/F and making the profit off of it, like other companies have done. This is nothing new in the MT industry, unfortunately!
Any companies that only have a set minimum line count per day?
I'm an acute care Transcriptionist with 5+ years experience. I currently work at a hospital but am researching for a reliable company that only sets daily minimum line counts versus a set shift schedule you have to follow.  Any out there? Thanks for any advice.
companies with accurate line count systems
Does anyone know of a company that has a line count system that actually keeps up with our current line counts?
What companies give an accurate EXText line count?
Either an accurate count or the option to check your own!
Let's hear from the MTs that love their companies, their jobs and have a great line count
I love where I work, happy with line count, happy with earning potential.  Love being an MT and working at home.  You???
MDI-MD pay periods

Would anyone be willing to share how MDI-MD payperiods work?  Every two weeks, 1st and 15th?  Or is it something different?

TIA

It has been 1 space after periods
since the new Style Guidelines took effect or affect, Ha Ha and make sure you do not use your expansions. If they say COPD you cannot expand it; and what about making lists of everything from meds to past history, etc. etc. Anything to not pay you for those lines.

Oh and don't forget it is x2 not the word "times". That would be too many characters on the line and we cannot pay you for that.

What horse will you be traveling on. I'll be going with ya.
Pay periods run from the 1st through the 15th, and sm
the 16th through the end of the month.  They have a LOT of different accounts, so I don't think there is any way to comment on the ESLs.  Like anywhere, it will vary from hospital to hospital.  And yes, line count is attainable with FT work.  Hope this helps.  I'm happy there!
They have slow periods also
x
Hmm. Do you have a lot of periods when you have no work? nm
nm
ask about pay periods, I worked for them for a
short time and it took about a month to get first check.
MXSecure pay periods
Can anyone tell me how the pay periods run?
Stay where you are. We all go through slow periods
nm
EMTS lines and pay periods
Pay days are the 10th and 26th. Depending on the platform, you may not get you lines in 8 hours, you may need more. They are flexible though. If you manage to get done with the minimum, they don't bother you. Good luck.
I drink one just about every day. Helps with periods. sm
The soy actually makes my periods shorter and less cramps, which is a HUGE deal to me.
I'm not using them for weight loss, just as a high-protein, low fat meal or snack, especially on days that I do weight training.
The pay periods end on the 15th and the last of the month. sm

As the other poster said, generally we are paid witihin a week after that.  I think the latest I have received my pay was on the 10th.  It is true that it is a bit odd not having a set pay date, but at least I can sure I will be paid.  I read horror stories on here of companies giving bad checks or not paying at all, and it makes me cringe.  I am my sole support, so if I do not get paid, my world turns upside down in a hurry.

If you are considering working for them, I wouldn't let that back me off if I was you.  They say the techs are working to fix it so that the line count doesn't have to be done manually, so perhaps in the future, it will be better.

When I get No studies - it is usually for short periods (sm)
Sometimes I clock out, balance my check book, check E-mail and there is work. Other times I sign off and flex my hours that day. Doesn't happen often.

I think on the weekends when there is OT authorized by our STM for the weekend they need to have someone check and make sure, if the number of jobs are WAAAAY down, cut off the OT authorized sign so those who are scheduled to work can do so.

I know it has to be hard to please the client and the MTs. I am certainly willing to flex for them as they are willing to flex for me when I have issues.

which IC positions use 1 space after periods?
My FT job requires 1 space after periods, which took me a long time to adjust to. Now I would like to get a 2nd job as well but I don't want to mess up my typing trying to go back and forth between 1 and 2 spaces at jobs?  TIA
Yes, 10 cpl for the first 6 pay periods if you meet the 1300 lines, sm

8 cpl if you do not.  After the 6 pay periods, if you become an employee, then the rates change.  I think 10 cpl then was only for 3rd shift.

I just wanted a part-time position, but the 10 cpl sounded rather attractive.  Of course, it doesn't matter how much someone pays if you don't have the work or can't make the lines.

Thanks again for your input.  We'll see if I even passed the test.

p.r.n. (and search won't allow periods in order get the right company)
Is the other company in Ohio as well?
You must not have been with Transtech long enough to see the lack of work periods. nm
y
Any companies that allow line count rather than hours or less than 20 hours per week? (sm)

Wouldn't mind having something extra especially with Christmas and general winter expenses coming up but working a FT job and really don't want to do another 20 hours on top of that.

He is going to pay 8.5 for 70 characters

which is more than 9 for 65.  There is definitely something wrong with his math.  If he paid 9 for 70 then it might be the same as 8.5 for 65.

65 characters
I've ALWAYS been told it means characters AND spaces.
and which characters... sm
print in white exactly, I wonder?

TIA
Lines are 65 characters.....
Not based on the actual line you see on the page.
black characters?
Sounds like no spaces counted to me.
I love those little characters! sm
Where does everybody get those? I have to have them! I love the pot disturber! Too cute! LOL!
I have got to get with the times! (Yeah, it was a good laugh, huh?)
55 characters with no spaces
Using the Apex platform, I found this calculation to be a major rip off.  Not sure why.
Maybe it's not 65 characters per line???

1600 lines is a lot.  It doesn't mention vacation time though does it?

55 is better--less characters for a line,
therefore more lines UNLESS it is black character only--i.e. not counting spaces. Some companies do it this way instead of paying for 65 character line (spaces included).
To the IC's is 10 cpl based on 65 characters a good
rate for an IC, even with having to pay your own taxes, social security, vacation, sick time and all.   How does this all pan out in the long run.  I'm a single parent and tired of all the crap I've taken the past 28 years as an employee - but too afraid to step out and work as an IC for fear of not being able to meet ends, covering for my own insurance and all.  Any and all feedback would be appreciated.
Pay is based on 65 characters and includes

spaces.  Line rate is based on experience, if you have CMT, and shift.  There may be some other things too.  I don't know 100%, but I'm pretty sure they offshore.   Get conflicting stories about accounts depending on who you talk to.  I think pay is average, PTO is accrued based on lines and is available immediately.  You can take in $$ or time off I believe.  Not sure of other benefits because I had already decided after talking to them that I wasn't going to take a position with them, so didn't pay attention to benefits.

Black and white characters

I worked for a company that used the DQS software and I never could get my line counts, even though I typed like a fiend! In an 8-hour shift, I could get maybe 800 to 900 lines with that program. The way my company said, is Black and White characters, which means no spaces.  I didn't get any credit for the ADT screens either.

Hope this helps.

black characters=without spaces.
nm
And my lines were often over 80 characters long. NM
x
Visible black characters help!?!?!?
So I'm trying and cannot figure out for the life of me how to compute what a proper rate would be once the switch goes over to visible black characters. I want to get this figured out, so that when the call or email comes about my adjusted line rate, I can either accept it or not.

Does anyone know, at a line rate of 8 cpl right now, what an equal VBC line rate would be? Is there any way to figure this out?

And does this mean we can stop the double spacing? I mean, if it won't affect the company's pay (because apparently they only bill on visible black characters), it's more in keeping with the new standard of only one space after periods and whatnot.
sounds like "black characters" only

which is no spaces.  I wouldn't automatically rule it out.  I know you probably already know this, but if you have an account at 8 cpl and the work is pretty easy and the platform is good that is MUCH better than the hideous ESLs/static/cumbersome formatting/slow platform of an 11 cpl account, right?  Maybe you should ask more info or give it a try & maybe it might be worth your while?

That being said, 3 cpl VR will NEVER be worth my while, unless it requires almost NO CORRECTIONS - still, I'd rather transcribe...

$1.35 per 1000 characters. hiring process is too sm
daggone long.  they SNAIL MAIL you a tape to transcribe for testing.  DUH!!!!!
Transcribing = 9 cpl 65 characters including spaces.
Good company, great people. Give them a try.
75 characters per line?? Today I called about a job
and the pay started at 7.5 cents a line ----- but 75 characters per line.  Has anybody heard of that before?  The job is acute care with high amount of ESLs.  What will they think of next?
Depends. How many characters make up a line?
.
