Does anybody work two jobs? Advice please :)

I work as an employee for a company with a 12-hour window, 40 hours a week, Monday through Friday, 1200 lines per day minimum.  I've been offered something local to do on my own, approximately 1200 lines per day of work, but I would have the entire 24 hours to do it.

If I get my first job done at 1 p.m., I could get the other lines done in 5-6 hours max.  Geez...I don't know.  I'm probably going to kill myself doing this, aren't I?  I was just calculating this as I was typing and didn't realize what a long day that would be.

Does anybody else do this?  If so, how is it working for you?   Do you feel burned out?  I would really like to manage this somehow but want to be realistic.  Any advice from someone who has done this or is successfully making something like this work would be appreciated!   The extra money would be soooo nice right now.

Need advice on changing jobs too!
I've been working for this company since November and have not gotten up to speed yet to meet 1200 lpd.  Normally, when I start a new job it only takes a week if that to be meeting production.  The software ExText, I was already familiar with.  However, I was placed on an Hem/Onc Childrens Hospital account, the terminology of which I am not experienced.  The benefits for this company are good, i.e. health, PTO, and such, but it pays only 8.5 cpl.  In discussing my dilema with them, they have offered to place me on a regular acute care hospital account, M-F day shift.  However, I have been offered an IC position for 10 cpl with another company.  What would you guys do.  I do need the health ins from the employee position.
Advice needed on applying for jobs due to quit
I had hoped I would not be in the process of looking for another job but here I am.  My question is this.  I left my last job of 3 years as I lost my father about a month ago whose health began declining on Thanksgiving.  My employer was well aware of this as a doctor's excuse to excuse my absence was unacceptable and our doctor had to fill out the FMLA paperwork which still ended up not being good enough.  Go figure.  I called my supervisor the morning that I found my father and told her what had happened and I could not work.  She said that was fine and went on to explain that the company gives three day bereavement pay which honestly was the furthest thing from my mind.  She then asked me if I thought I needed 3 days off and had I not been in shock, I probably would have let her have it.  Hello, this was my dad not my dog.  How heartless can you be?  She said with work volumes (which by the way, they were telling other girls to flex their shift due to low work volume) they could not have me out three days.  I was soo upset after her asking me that that I sent an email to human resources and the head of the company and boy was I reamed out by human resources for doing this as she said it was none of the head of the company's business.  Why not?  It is one of his employees who said this.  In sending my resume and filling out applications, when they ask why I left this heartless company, what do I say?  Am i being unreasonable and maybe should have stayed with this company?  I'm questioning myself alot lately but still not sleeping well.  I have filed for unemployment.  I live in Pennsylvania and I pray that I get it because we have a 9 month old daughter and we need the income.  I know if I have to appeal it, I will not hesitate.   Forgive me for rambling, maybe I just needed to vent, I don't know.  Just needed an opinion or advice.  feel free to e-mail me.

Out of work - need advice (sm)

Okay, folks, I am not sure what to do here, how to approach this.  I am an IC for a company out of Massachusetts (not Focus), have been for well over a year now.  Working on the ASP platform, begging for work.  I did seven piddly jobs today, and prior to that had not worked since the 17th.  Had been tremendously busy before that, and then all of a sudden the work just dried up.  I am not a perfect Transcriptionist but I am good, darned good.  They keep telling me there is no work on the ASP that is available but boy, those job numbers sure keep moving right along (you know, the numbers the jobs are given when the docs upload them?  The ones that tell me several thousand jobs have been uploaded in the last few weeks?) I have started applying for other positions but I am somewhat discouraged.  I keep hearing about how companies are desperate for good MTs, and I know I am a good MT, but no one seems interested.  Anyone else experiencing this?

Any advice appreciated, even constructive criticism.  Oh, BTW, before someone tells me that maybe my quality is not quite what I think it is, I have not had a single report returned to me or had a word of complaint in well over six months.  As far as I know, the client is satisfied with my work.

Thanks, y'all.

anybody work for DIGITRANINC? I need advice!

I just started working for this company and cannot got the FTP info up and running correctly.  The instructions I have gotten from the owner are extremely ambiguous and her emails are very short.  I spent 20 minutes transcribing, but over 20 hours trying to get the correct file setup!  Some of the instruction information seems to be a little outdated as well. If there is anyone out there with friendly and patient help, I'll be indebted to you!

try taking your own advice and work on that

Good advice, and advice that I'm giving real thought to ...

If I had known that they offshored before I accepted employment with them I never would have gone there to work.  I've been here long enough now though to not want to lose my benefits.

Still ... making a DECENT PAYCHECK and making a living without being stressed out over the type of work that I'm doing is just as important as good benefits.

Advice: Go over your lead. Go to the next person up. There is work there. sm
I would call the office and talk to Karyn or Becky. Your lead might not be conveying the message for some reason. Sometimes they are too busy, sometimes they don't want to share someone. Just call. That's the only way to make it happen, and you will be glad you did!
Are you telling her to work for $5 an hour? That is not healthy or good advice nm

MD-IT hiring - looks like a really cool company to work for... any advice/information?
I sure would love to know more about the company - a search of this forum turned up zilch.  I was with Medquist for 8 years, and the company I went to did not deliver on the acute care account I was hired for.....
That is why I work 2 jobs, 1 FT and
1 PT, so I NEVER run out of work.  If 1 runs out, I switch to the other.  It is working out great.  Ya got to keep ya U-know-what covered. (Hope I'm not banned for that.)
PT IC's who work 2 or more jobs (sm)
What kind of interesting schedules do you keep?  Do you work X amount of lines on X days?  Days versus evenings?  Weekend sometimes?  Just trying to get an idea and be creative with my scheduled and would love to hear how you manage to juggle...thanks!
Would you work two jobs if the first

says you cannot work for anyone else as long as you work for them and that all your transcription time must be for them only?  This includes above a 40-hour week.  Do you think they'd find out if I did?  I am thinking of it because of the account I'm on and cannot make any money with.

My account is very complicated and they are always asking for extra help on it and it does not pay well.  The account specs and headers are very intricate.  You are supposed to know when dictators want stuff that they don't even ask for and the specs are constantly changed and updatead.  The company does not pay for spaces or headers.  I made 5.39 cents yesterday for two hours work.  That's nuts.  I've got two years experience and am not toally new, but can't make any money on this account and the company can't hardly keep anyone on it either.  They don't seem to understand why they can't anyone and keep saying is it such a nice account.  Duh!

Can you work both jobs until you
figure out if Keystrokes is on the up and up.  I have been burned so many times and understand how you feel;however, every time someone posted on this board and said to be careful, I have learned to listen.  I was warned against Precyse, Spheris, Medquist and did not listen and went broke with those companies because I did not listen, but you also have to take what others say with a gain of salt and do what is going to help you.  You said you make good money right now, well you have your answer.  I would stay put or work them both until you are 100% sure about Keystrokes.
Not everyone is able to work 2 jobs or even 3 sm
due to family responsibilities, personal health issues and/or other commitments. They took a job with TT and have had more or less enough to work to keep them happy. TT is their only source of income and in some cases, they are the sole wage earner, so be nice. Maybe TT should go ahead and lay off some people instead of going with the low work no work issue so people can collect unemployment and maybe food stamps for those who need it. I myself would give take a layoff at TT so someone with children could have enough work to put food on their table, even though I need the money as well. No need to flame me, that is just my own opinion.
No, you should not have to work 3 jobs
I think that if those of you who have to try to juggle multiple jobs were to get an on-site job in whatever field, you would be surprised to learn that nowdays working at home is not all it's cracked up to be.  I never tried it but I think juggling 2 or 3 jobs would leave no time for a life.  Believe me life is short. Too short to put up with the nonsense feast or famine.  There has always been feast and famine but it used to be that the feast times were the norm.  The famines were a welcome relief, not meaning out of work totally, but maybe a sacrifice of a few hundred lines during a pay period.
I don't even work there, but if there are 300 jobs
can't the company share that work with some of the others out of work? Seems kind of one sided to me. My observation is you like to gloat in front of those who have little or no work. Quite possibly you could mention to the company that others need work as well as you.
I work 2 jobs, get DD on both and never pay a fee!..sm
I think there are only a few companies left who actually charge for DD, but those are probably the ones who are always in question.
Then what? MTs need jobs & will still work for them,

Thanks for the advice. The idea of clinic work sounds good, but I do feel comfortable with acute ...
care. I have a lot of experience with operative notes, DS, consults, radiology etc.. but I am not that thrilled with ESLs. It is just harder to make money on them. I think I will look into clinic work. It was only the lack of work that was bothering me about these companies and mismanaging the accounts they did have, broken promises, and just getting the runaround.. over everything from benefits to work.
For those who work 2 or more jobs and they both want extra work? sm
Do you automatically give it to the one you do full time or the one that pays the most?  Feel like there is some loyalty to the one who gives me benefits.  How do you all do it?
Maybe we all don't need to work two jobs, or care to.

Asking about dialup, work, jobs, etc. (SM)
If you are looking for a job, please read the job ads on the Job Seeker's board. The ads are very descriptive and have contact information for your convenience.

Otherwise, the Company board is for asking about a specific company (or companies).

I would work 2 jobs, but the job you describe above would not be one of them!
I don't believe I would do the job you described at all...first, second, or third!

We have work. I've been in your shoes though with other jobs
They are screaming desperately, I get the job, and the second day of the job, there is no work so I sat there all afternoon twiddling my thumbs. By day 3, when I was told there was only 3 reports to do, I quit. Life's too short to waste my time and energy.
Yes. Check the # of jobs...0, 4, 21, etc., the words OT are there. The work soon won't be.
This happens often. Yes, it says OT is offered on an account, but there may be 0 jobs available. They absolutely do not owe us any OT at all ever, but it would be nice to get 40 hours in during your posted availability and not have to constantly flex to do so. People have other obligations in life besides Webmedx.
I like to work 2 part time jobs. sm
I don't like to put all my eggs in one basket. (Easter eggs LOL!)  That way if I lose one I still have one to fall back on.  Been burned too many times between offshoring and VR.
Why do companies advertise for jobs if they have no work?

I lost my job with a big offshoring company a couple of months ago.  I knew it was coming so I started applying for jobs and sending my resume for posted jobs.  The company that hired me responded to my resume submission within 2 HOURS and I was hired the next day.  They had an immediate need, speciality I love, good pay.  Now, a couple of months later I am getting calls and e mails from companies that I applied to months ago.  One recruiter said, I don't know when we received your application, it was probably 90 days ago.  During this same time period I have seen the Q advertise twice, claiming they have steady work (????)  Of course, after reading posts here I would not even consider any offer from them.  A lady from Spheris e mailed and ask that I let her know a time I could interview some time in the next several weeks.

I don't get it.  If you do not have work, why are you posting jobs?  I would consider this a big red flag.

There IS work out there, hundreds of jobs right now. Be a squeaky wheel!

Jobs just trickling in here, too. IC's have decided to show up for work! nm

Work for a company that does not offshore. Save our jobs.

Work both jobs for awhile, part time for the new one. Most
of the MTSO will understand your reluctance to quit your old job until you are sure the new one will work. I have worked for two companies in the past year and told both that I would have to work part time until I was comfortable quitting my old job. I ended up keeping my old job because the new ones didn't work out. Also, 1 cpl decrease in pay isn't that much to make up if the work is good. Hopefully, you won't have to sit around waiting for work, and you can follow the BOS which will be easier for you and probably help you transcribe fater.
they are constantly out of work. Will show 40 jobs and a minute later none.

The jobs I have doing acute care work seem to be quite busy. sm

The clinic work that I do is still low, but that was discussed below ... I don't think it has anything to do with the holidays, and I do not care anymore.

Generally, probably hospital work is the way to go as far as a steady stream of work.  With clinic work, doctors can take off, shut down totally for holidays, etc., which leaves a big hole, obviously.  That's just my opinion, of course.

It would be great to have just one great job you could rely on to always give you a nice fat check each time, but I am beginning to realize if I truly want to be safe, I need to hedge my bets with several other jobs as well.  At least until I win the lottery

work is decreasing because VR is replacing 10 MT's with 2 and India et al is taking 2 jobs out

AMEN TO THAT.. I worry all the time how fast our jobs are dwindling down thanks to work going
to other countries and more companies going to the voice recognition programs. Obviously, they will still need proofreaders and editors for the VR stuff, but not as many people. I feel like someday our jobs will just be gone so yes invest your money into nursing or something. Anything else medical is a win-win situation, just not transcription as a whole.
Don't think any do except for those in-house jobs. Some QA jobs are paid hourly. nm
s
They didn't take our jobs, QT gave them our jobs. The account is now
back in the hands of US MTs, or will be in just a couple of weeks.
Are MTs that are looking for jobs finding good jobs right now with everyone looking or is it
getting more difficult to find a good job.  I am most interested in jobs for experienced MTs with more than 10 years service.  I wonder if it is better to put a resume on or just keeping applying or what is the best way to go about this.
i work 3 part-time jobs now. it can be confusing if you are learning both at the same time, but sm
other than that not a problem for me. best to get one down before starting to other or you might become overwhelmed.
Look at all the jobs on the jobs boards.
You can find a job and won't have to apply for unemployment. You would be surprised how many companies need qualified MTs! Go get 'em and get 'em now!

Don't wait until the 11th hour. Too many needs to put your hat in the unemployment slot.

What they lost is our gain.

bit of advice - sm
I have worked in many hospitals over many years, and after a bit of trial and error, I have found that this approach has always worked in my favor -

I STOPPED sending resumes to HR departments. Why? Because I would inevitably end up with a computer generated letter "thanking me for the resume ... on file ... should a position come up ... blah blah blah." I would contact the hospital and say I am responding to the position that is open, what do you mean you don't have a position??? The response would be "Oh, well someone should get in contact with you soon then."

By the time an HR department got off their butt to start calling in people for the position, chances are the transcription department was into overtime and overtime meant loss of $$ and next thing you know, it was being outsourced.

So I cut out the HR department, and would find out the name of the head of medical records and send my resume to that person. The person would either go to HR and say "contact this person for an interview" or would contact me themselves and set up the interview.

I would even send a resume to the head of medical records even if there was no opening because you never know. Hospitals may have onsite transcriptionists as well as outsourcing. But if the hospital realizes that there is the possibility of another Transcriptionist right in the area, they may be able to utilize me. Hence, I would get a phone call.

It's just a bit of advice - don't always rely on the website for transcription positions.

my advice is ask MQ for more than that...
if you have the experience and are 'seasoned' you should start out at least at 9 or 9.5. be firm. they must need MTs. if they say they do not pay that much say you are sorry to hear it but you have other offers, and everybody is paying at least 9 now...(IF you are as good as you say and you tested and passed, etc.)

men do this- they push back a little...

even if they simply will not give you more than say 8.5, they will at least know you are not stupid. if you take it at 8.5, tell them you want a review in the near future and expect to make more than that...

geeze, I started at 9.5 there a year ago...?

if you are good, demand to get paid what you deserve.
