Geesh..It's been a long day. I don't think I made any sense on that post.

Bottom line is, best pay rate out there, most of the time enough work and good benefits. They have a lot of happy employees.

I'm so glad that made sense!
Having learned Escription at a smaller hospital with a total of only about 10 MTs, the difference in how quickly the system learned and started dropping down near-perfect reports to edit was a stark contrast to what I'm sure you're seeing.

We were all trained in the same basic account specifics, no allowances for personal styles or preferences, and no unnecessary expanding just to get the extra characters, so we were all on the same page.

Within about 6 weeks, Escription (with the help of above-average dictators) was churing out probably a 90% accuracy rate for all reports.

Whew...is it Friday yet? I feel like half of what I'm trying to explain isn't making sense, and I'm really glad you're understanding me :-).

I'm also BEYOND delighted to see an intelligent exchange between people regarding editing versus standard transcription! It's so refreshing to discuss this without insults, flaming, accusations, etc.

I want to thank everybody in this thread for their input and being able to act like intelligent adults instead of kids at schoolyard.

When we MTs put our minds and collective experiences together, it's amazing what we can do :-)
The post makes no sense.

Your post makes perfect sense to me!

Someone who completed a court reporting course already has the skills and could easily use them in MT.  I just never heard of somebody who already does MT taking the time and effort to learn Stenotype.  It can certainly be self-taught, but I'm sure you know that it doesn't happen overnight.

And I don't see at all how Stenotype could help much in VR, which is what a lot of companies are moving towards these days.

Of course, anyone learning Stenotype has additional employment options open to them in the court reporting field, which can be a pretty lucrative field.  (And I TOTALLY share your feelings about work clothes!!! LOL.)

It's a wonderful skill to have, but it's far from easy and takes a long time to achieve a speed that would help with MT, don't you think?

No...the post from Moving On makes no sense to me
nm
You're right...that post doesn't make any sense...sm
How could high producers mess things up for the rest of us, when, in the past few weeks, we were offered incentives on most of the accounts to keep them in TAT by working extra??  And how could a responsible member of management even state something to that effect?  The only logical conclusion is that this particular poster wants to discourage high production (on his-/her OWN accord) in other MTs to keep the pickings greener for him-/herself.
perhaps she preparing for this for a long time. seems she made a ton of money. NM

your post doesn't make much sense. Find another job then? That's what the rest of us do!

your post lacks logic and makes no sense, whatsoever..sm
What is the REAL message in her post?
That her grammar is awful.
made type -- SO UPSET OVER TT and their NO WORK situation way TOO LONG now

sorry about type, but very, very upset with the TT has lost any concern/care for their MT's who make their paychecks for them.  Dictatphone doesn't pay you your salary, nor pay for your raises.  Your MT's allow your paychecks the remain the same and allow you to give yourselves RAISES.

Leads/sups, etc are transcribing OUR WORK now and we have none to little no paychecks to pay our bills.

You who are thinking of hiring on with TT better give some very consideration to your decision.  GOOD ADVICE.

I read that post on job seeker's board, and it makes absolutely no sense...sm
Scary to think this is what medical reports might look like coming in from overseas MTs. Thank goodness I'm not an editor...that would irritate the living --- out of me. Quite an embarrassment to those of us in this profession who have worked hard over the years and are proud of what we do.
Nope...MDI-MD for a long time as well and I have a schedule I have to follow! You've got it made

You almost made it through the post..
Okay, you almost made it through the post and you were being positive and encouraging until you got to the part about there are a lot of people who think they can transcribe and cannot...

Just because someone had a bad experience with your company does not mean they are a substandard transcriptionist. Their pay is low for the industry and the incentive plan makes no sense. I left because I don't believe in what is happening in Trinidad. I was always able to transcribe enough lines and always had a 99%+ QA score.
Your post just made my day! n/msg
;D
Above post was made by me, not QTme, sorry.

I think this is the 3rd post you've made sm
about this.  If you only had 8 days into this job, just let it go and move on.  You sound hysterical.
Your post made me laugh, then cry.
Shift differential does not exist at Acusis. Weekend differentials were calibrated in the same way wages were. In order to get a weekend differential, you have to work and achieve your line count on both Saturday and Sunday...so if you've got a Sunday thru Thursday schedule, you're out of luck. Tuesday thru Saturday? Screw you. Plus, with a lot of 'files not available' (no jobs), at least the last Saturday of every pay period has everybody on line trying to squeeze out a few lines...which means that Saturday and Sunday you're not going to get your line count, which means even if you threw family life out the window and chained yourself to your desk, you're still not going to get the weekend differential. If you ever decide to 'share the wealth' and drop your company name, please feel free to let me know. 25+ years of transcription has got to be worth better treatment that I'm getting now.
A post was made asking for opinions. I replied. sm

Part of the reason I replied was because I did go to management, several times in fact, and either there were no replies whatsoever or the replies were in disagreement with others in management, leaving me wondering which one was correct, or they were replies to simply pacify with no intention of correcting.  I'm not trying to flame the company. If my experience seems like a flame, it is because there is a problem and exposing it is like exposing dirty laundry, I guess.  It isn't meant to dissuade anyone or persuade any else for that matter.  It is simply MY experience.  Like I said before, I am not a disgruntled employee.  I am merely experiencing some things in the company that differ from what others are going through and I am simply expressing my experiences on this forum because of what I stated before about intimidation coming from management on the internal forum.

You are absolutely right that there are many, many employees of Transcend that are extremely happy.  I'm not among the ones who have flamed anyone for posting postive experiences. I have/had been one of those happy employees for years.  There are also many that have been so fed up they have quit. There are also current employees who are in my situation as well, but are afraid to talk about it.  At this point in time, I fall in the middle grouping.  I'm not saying it's a bad company to work for.  Again, I am merely expressing my experience, and has been said many, many times before, I'm quite confident that people on this board have the ability to know what is best for them in a company and aren't going to let the posting of a few happy cheerleaders or a few disgruntled ex-employees be the basis for the decision what company to choose or not to choose.

All I am saying is that if you are the poster who feels that he/she can work whenever simply because it is inconvenient to work the shift you had committed to, please don't assume that I hadn't talked to management about MY issues and try to point the finger and make accusations about MY motives.  This board is about the pros and the cons.  Unfortunately for me, my circumstance falls in the latter grouping and I shouldn't be lumped into a group of people flaming or bashing and told it is unfair for me to speak about my experience when I have tried all other internal avenues to no avail.  If my experience seems like flaming the company, there would be no flame if there was no ember to fan, so I should have that accusation pointed at me simply because I discuss it?? That is what's not fair, and since I did say I didn't want to argue, I'm not going to keep the discussion going with banter that gets heated or flamed to the point the whole string gets deleted.  Thanks for your input and have a nice day.

I can't stress enough how degrading it is for any MTSO to post foul language in a job ad post along with making references that people should know what the **** they are doing.  Our industry has been demoralized enough without our own MTSOs posting in this manner.

AMEN!!! The OP is DEFINITELY a post made by someone in management at SPI!
No SPI employee would ever say those things about that crappy company! They treat MTs like second-class citizens and rip them off to no end! I also worked for Cymed for about 2 years before SPI bought them out. A few months after the buyout was announced, I got out of there as fast as I could. The original poster is obviously either management or just an employee who needs a good, HARD kick in the noggin!
Hey, QA, I made another mistake .. pull my post .. LOL
Pardon the html in my post, as I tried to enter smileys ... lol ... there was no way to proofread ~ and I didn't anyway, because it's time for me to get ready for work. I also said not being turned down ~ should have been no not .. LOL .. toodles ~ I'm outta here and not participating anymore. ;o)
The post was made on a Sunday night -- no one in the office really to ask then. sm
And it seemed a harmless question.   He/she wasn't really asking a policy question ... just a general question regarding when the payday is.  Most companies that I have worked for, if the payday is over a weekend, they pay on Friday.  Unfortunately, that is not the case here, but at least they are upfront about it, and it says so in the paperwork somewhere.
Please everyone, read the post made by Tammy Johson above. It explains everything.

This is totally off topic, but your post made me smile with the reference to Wang sm

word processors.  I remember when we got them at the hospital, I was all happy while some of the older ladies were balking at it, but the thing that sticks in my mind was a comedian at the time who did some kind of joke about, Who let some company call themselves Wang?

Anyway, it was funny at the time and this brought back a memory . I'm sorry for your situation.  I am 50 too, and although I do not live in a rural area, in fact just recently moved to the Denver area, I feel rather trapped.  I have done this since I was a junior in high school, and I really do not have any other marketable job skills.  When I see posts about wages being cut and work drying up, I panic inside and wonder what the future will hold for me.  Even if I had the money to go back to school, by the time I would graduate, I'd be an old lady anyway and probably not the best candidate for hire.

Good luck to you.

As long as her post is truthful
And not embellished and she has her lay-off notice and emails to back her up, she should be fine.

The other person served papers apparently presented things on this board libelous and defamatory about a company; things that were not as factual as they were preesnted to be. THAT is when one must be careful.

MT30+ is relating a personal experience, not presenting speculation as fact.

She will be fine, legally speaking.

Any suggestions. This post is long, but some of it can be skipped if you want!

Does anyone have any suggestions for being able to check out the important aspects of a job and a company before doing all the testing, signing all the paperwork, going through training, etc?  I have been in several situations in which the person doing the hiring makes the job sound so wonderful, but then when I actually start training, there are lots of things that are just frustrating and that were not presented to me at the time of hire.  I hoped we could compile a good list of things to ask a company/HR person before taking an MT job.  (QAers can also make a list!)  We could just all add things as they occur to us to help others.  I'm sure I'm not the only one who has been led down the primrose path when a company has presented what the job will be like!  We've all been there!  :)  The last place I was hired was just terrible, and that was the last straw.  So, I need to make sure I'm smarter in my job search before accepting positions with companies and then finding out the rest of the story later.  I know you can't know everything about a job before actually doing it, but I'm so tired of being misled.

My last experience was this:  (This is a little long but pertinent to my question to show what I mean by my not knowing enough about a company before committing to it, so feel free to just skip it and provide any suggestions about my question above.  Sorry for the long post!)

The last company that I hired with sounded great.  I was to be assigned a doctor after my training period for whom I would transcribe regularly, and I liked the idea of typing for one doctor on a regular basis.  During training, they trained me on other doctors besides the one I would transcribe for, and then they asked me if I would take a doctor as my primary account who was very unhappy with the transcription services he received from their company.  They gave me the choice if I wanted this position or not.  I considered it, but then I decided that since I had only been with the company for three weeks and was still in training, that it might not be a good idea to place a new Transcriptionist (I’m not new to transcription, but I was definitely new to their company) on that account.  I also needed to be provided with information as to what would be done in cases when he was on vacation (a schedule of which they would not give me so that I could plan when I wouldn’t have work).  I asked if I would I transcribe for other doctors, etc. so as not to be without a paycheck during the times when my primary doctor was away.  Once I asked these questions and also expressed my concerns about being placed on an account where the doctor was already unhappy, they sent me an e-mail stating that they had no work for me.  I was baffled, and sent a letter explaining the situation to an HR person.  They sent me a reply stating that my performance had not been up to par during training and that I am terminated.  I was so shocked.  I have always been a very accurate transcriptionist, and since no one had said anything to me about my work not being good quality during training, I assumed I was on track with their company, especially when they offered me a primary so soon after being hired when I wasn’t even out of training.  By the way, it is a good thing I didn’t need much training because this company is VERY poor in the training department.  You only get to read their manual.  I didn’t get any type of real training on anything other than how to submit my line counts, and that was not even covered fully.  Their manual, which is just about the only thing you have to refer to as you cannot get a return phone call or a return e-mail from a supervisor when you have a question, has steps left out of it.  (Perhaps I should go ahead and leave any company once I find out that the training and communication are poor as that seems to be a telltale sign of poorly-run companies.)  Just to be clear, I read posts from other people on this board who say good things about this company, so I wasn’t expecting them to be like this.  This company never said anything during my training about my work performance being below what they expected.  In fact, I don’t think they would have offered me the position of transcribing for this doctor who was already unhappy with turn-around times and quality work had my work performance been substandard.  Only when I asked questions about the account and said I didn’t think it would be wise to put me as a new transcriptionist on that account did they terminate me and say that my work performance was not acceptable.  It’s my feeling that they got angry with me that I did not want to be set up for a fall by transcribing for a doctor who was already unhappy with the services he was getting from them from a previous transcriptionist, so they began fabricating things about my performance.  I mean, if my performance was not acceptable to them, then why did no one say anything to me about that until after I said I would prefer a different doctor and also to know what would be done to provide me with work at times when the doctor would be away.

So, the reason I’m typing all this is to say that I want to ask the right questions of companies, but when I asked questions of this particular company, I was terminated.  Does anyone think that asking questions about pay, schedule, etc., will keep you from getting a job or from keeping the job once you accept it?  I have never been involved with any jobs that didn’t let you know what you can expect in terms of work or in terms of a schedule until I began medical transcription, so I thought asking these types of questions wouldn’t be anything out of the ordinary.  I guess this is just a completely backward industry when it comes to things like that which we take for granted in the rest of the professional world.  And I certainly didn’t expect this company to begin fabricating problems with my work performance when I did ask some questions!  It seems as if the transcription companies want the MT to commit all their time and energy to them, but when they are asked to provide a stable working environment and a schedule, they refuse.  It’s pretty one-sided in my opinion.  I mean, I sit up nights until 4:00 a.m. to meet deadlines and I work every weekend to accommodate what is needed on my accounts, as I’m sure many of us do who transcribe!  Shouldn’t we able to expect to be treated with respect as employees?  I’m not desperate for work as I do have two other jobs, so I am trying to look out for myself and get a fitting position and have it longterm, but when a company fires you for expressing concerns and asking questions, it’s pretty confusing as to what they want.  And my other experiences in medical transcription have been similar.  I have never been told that the quality of my work was not up to par, however until this most recent company!  What I mean is that I’ve just run across companies that don’t tell you the real story up front and also mistreat you as an employee.  One of my supervisors at my current job told me that she has been in this business for over 20 years, and that even though it’s not pleasant, I should just expect this to be the norm in this business.  She is very level-headed and really smart and experienced, so I trust what she says.  It’s just pretty frustrating to think that this is the type of industry I have to look forward to!

I do want to “search smarter” for jobs next time.  I have a bachelor’s degree in English and Communication Arts, teach English, and I have over three years of transcription experience.  I don’t expect to start with a company as the boss or even at the very top pay, but I feel that I should be able to find a good company, and I want to ask the right questions.  Any ideas out there?

There originally was a long thread with this post. As
x
look back a few days.. LONG post about this

3800-4200 per month - sm long post
I have worked for the same national for the past 8 years.

I might add that I have not made this much every year but it has been a gradual increase.

I get an average rate 0.085 and set personal daily goals far above the minimum required. If I reach my goal of 2000 lines in 8 hours, great, if I don't, oh well. Not worth killin myself over.

I go to all of the kids functions, games, plays, concerts, take them to and from school, practices, etc...

I take advantage of the extra incentives when I feel I have the energy and sometimes when I don't but they really need to get the TAT back in line.

They don't ask over much of me.

I would make a few recommendations for you.

First, do not throw in the towel with one company after a few months just because you aren't where you want to be as far as production goes. New polices, accounts, platforms... all of it takes time to learn and get comfortable with.

Secondly, set your OWN goals. Increase them slowly over time so you don't feel like you are chained to your desk. You will see your production start to increase soon enough.

Thirdly, if you aren't hasseled constantly, get a decent rate, and have a decent support system in your coworkers and supervisors, compare that with the other places you have been and ask yourself why you left in the first place, then weigh your options.

I left my last employer because there was a lot of gossip and little work getting done and I am a doer. It just drove me bananas. Much happier now.

Lastly, even with my current company, I have had to start from scratch several times due to loss of an account, loss of my expanders or macros due to technical reasons, I have filled myself during the feasts and starved through the famines but, I would much rather be right where I am than anywhere else.

I knew it wouldn't take long for a flamer to post...sm
I don't even know where to start. Do YOU have a child(ren) who plays soccer every Saturday or football every Sunday? Do YOU go to church? Do YOU have kids you want to take to Sunday school? Some of us that work at home need that weekend time to spend with our families and GOD!

You show me any other profession that requires a person to work either every Sat or Sun. There isn't any!! Doctors rotate and so do nurses! It just sounds to me like these MTSOs don't want to take the time or spend the money for a scheduler. How hard can it be???
Just remember... proofread! You had a bunch of typos in that long-winded post!

u made 300 a week? That's more than I made there.
But no work, no pay. Nice ppl, they really are, some of the nicest in the business. Just can't communicate to save their lives and the recruiters are lying dogs.

I'd say if you're looking for part-time work, as in less than 20 hrs a week's worth of work, then this place is for you. Use them as ur backup. Because guaranteed that's all they're using you for.

No problem :) No matter how long, it is too long for me - I am broke the day after payday. Kids wi
do that to you!

I know that they have worked very hard to make sure that checks are never late and I can say that in the past two years, I have had one problem (2 days late) and in the past 18 months, they have all been on payday and perfect.

I know that there are a lot of hard feelings in MT in general. I also know firsthand (and I am not mgmt) how hard KS has worked to get things going good.

I would not want to walk in an MTSO's shoes for any amount of money, but that's just me. I like to finish my work for the day, forget about work when not working and get paid on payday. I never want the other things that go with mgmt or owning a company of any kind :)
