With the advent of EMRs that allow you to fill in the blanks for exams, clinic is on its way out...to some extent. It is not as easy to find jobs in clinic work as it was.

Acute care is another matter. You have a couple of regional companies who have shut down their VR departments and let all their MEs (medical editors) go. The company I work for ramped up the use of VR over the spring from about 30% on many accounts to 90% on many accounts...then back down to around 50% of the work on the same accounts. The reason is that MEs DO NOT do a very good job, they edit in every way imaginable other than how they are supposed to do it. You are to listen WORD FOR WORD and edit the text in front of you. The programs are not at the point with accuracy where they need to be. Unless we go to faster computer processors and we have pretty well maxed out the current computer chip technology, and unless or until we can write programs that learn better as they go along, the quality of VR is not going to get much better than it is currently. I don't care what the VR software companies say.

The need for VR is something we have created ourselves, as MTs. There is more and more need for our services every year. The problem is that there are relatively few of us who have the necessary skill sets, who will actually show up to work when we said we would be there and get our minimum lines or better. Most of the platforms out there are NOT conducive to higher levels of production, no matter what recruiters say about them. There are just not enough of us to go around. What else can be done? This business takes years to learn properly and to get to where you make a living with it.

I do QA and I MT. The work I QA from so-called trained graduates of programs is horrendous. Even MTs who seem to have experience are often not much better. They don't care about the quality of their work, only the lines they produce. They either don't know or don't care about their accuracy.

A QA person can help teach an MT...if they even know what they are doing...if they have the time and moreover, if the MT is willing to learn. I am the one who recommends that someone be released from QA and I have input into firing MTs who don't make the grade. It is my call as to whether an MT is willing to learn or if they should be let go. We have a small staff and in the last 6 months, I have recommended that one MT be retained and worked with (it turned out very well) and suggested 4 other MTs for being let go and they all were, because not one of them would take constructive criticism. I have about the driest feedback style I have ever seen because I don't want anyone to feel personally attacked, but they still would not listen.

My biggest gripe about MT training right now, since I have your ear, is that no one is trained to use an expander! If you want to see less VR you have to see bigger production numbers with traditional MTs. An Expander is the only way to do that. It is critical to making a decent income sooner, critical to accuracy, critical to job satisfaction and therefore critical to this industry. The best way would be to teach by system (body system and specialty) and include expansions for that system while you are at it.
Give it time, sweetie, give it time.

I've had many, many years experience in all specialties and doing all work types, as well as radiology, pathology and autopsies.  When I went to work for TT in 2003 the best the recruiter could give me was 8.5 cpl despite the fact that she knew me and knew my work.  When I retired I had the occasion to be talking to someone I  had worked for some 15 years ago.  He also knew my work and my production.  He offered me 10.5 cpl which he said was the top out pay for their MTs.  He said the usual starting pay was  8.5 for experienced MTs.  I didn't take the job because I wanted to stay retired.   When I left MQ I was making 11.5 cpl plus bonuses.  It had become unbearable when the MT supervisor quit and  her replacement was a control freak.   I don't know the person who said they had been offered 9 or 10 cpl but I think if he/she was offered that amount, there were other factors in play so don't feel bad.  I should think that while CNAs do hard work for low pay, you would be better off.  MT was good to me but it is not a career I would choose these days.

because of new accounts, expanding accounts and I think buying two smaller companies at the end of this year. I have a good source, so these are accurate.
Okay..I'll give ya that one. I came from the MDI side as it merged with Transcend so...
I was offered more than 4 cpl per line on editing and I'm not sure why if everyone else prior had been given 3 cpl. There is no way I would do editing for 3 cpl and trust me..coming from MDI into Transcend was not happy days for us. The biggest problem that I did have was when I found out our work was getting sent to India. Nothing is worse than being told we share work with our overseas partners and have too many days of no work. I have no doubt where it was going. So, never having come from the Transcend side, where you came from, I'm only going to relay my experience and apologize if that is what actually happened there. Yikes..I rely heavily on the MTs and supervisors who came from MDI because I know they watch our backs.
Thanks, I'll give it a shot! Hope they are hiring PT. nm

They don't give a hoot - they'll take the poor quality for less money.
It is clear nobody is held responsible for poor quality medical transcription - do you often hear of lawsuits for errors on dictated reports? How about JCAHO failing a facility for errors on reports? Rare. And as an auditor I have seen what gets through. Either nobody checks or nobody cares. Part of the problem with MT rates. Very unfortunate.

to pay us such a good rate when all the other companies are paying 3-5 cpl. If they all set their rates so low, there is nothing we can do about it if we want to continue to work. Their Town Hall meetings are always a pep talk followed by something that cuts your pay in the couple of years I've been there.
It is grand to work from home,

Give yourself a little time ---
to get used to it; it really is pretty user-friendly.  If you're having problems, give the trainer a call; she's always been very willing to help me out, and give me little 'tweaks' to use.
I would give them a little time....
Lots of things going on at the current time with the new hires and new accounts, plus the weekend is coming up. I would think the beginning of next week would be reasonable to hear back. Good luck!
Give yourself a little time; however, just
consider the transcription part of it......do you enjoy the worktypes given, can you make a decent line count....do you like the platform? If you answer yes, then give yourself some time. All new jobs are overwhelming at first.

Personally, I can usually tell if the job is for me within, at most, 1 week.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Give it time
When did you start? Give it a couple of weeks, it does get better. Will it ever be as lucrative as straight typing, no, but it's not that bad either. I actually like editing better now. I just try to work a little faster to make up for the slight difference in my paycheck.

You'll see this poster every time something is said or asked about Keystrokes. sm
He/she has a bitter attitude about them but never provides specifics. I think everyone just ignores this person. I know I did, and I am glad as I love my job at Keystrokes. It did take a few weeks to get started but they were waiting on my ID from the hospital. It was worth the wait. I have been there 4 months now.

If you call being ripped off for more than 5 grand harsh & scary?
grow some guts. Unfortunately, this is profession has become a cut throat business, and if harshness is what it takes to get paid, then so be it. We are all just trying to survive here on the piddling pennies with which we are compensated. This MT is an extremely dedicated, hard-working MT whose business has been destroyed by ***********not paying for services rendered. It's unconscionable. It is not meant to be a threat, but rather a forewarning of what it yet to come.

Patience is a virtue.
She cannot give up her full-time job
currently because she is testing the waters.  There are a lot of posters on these boards stating they feel like job hoppers.  I do not think she is giving anyone a bad name.  You personally make your own bed.  You must be QA.  QA can get on a power trip and just never let up.  I have not tested or worked for a company yet that does not ping you on something or other.  It is just insane out there.  No wonder people want to get out of this field.  Posters slamming other posters is negative and certainly not positive.  We should be empowering each other, not assuming variables on other MT's situations when we really do not know.  No offense, but that is just plain nastiness in my opinion.
Give yourself time. You are familiar with
your old account. You have to give yourself the time to adjust to new formatting, dictators, etc. with any new job.
Just give them time. Remember, there
are 100s of people seeing these ads and sending in resumes.
Give them plenty of time. I think most
places are overrun with resumes at the moment.

I'm not damage control! I'm really nobody in the grand scheme of things. Just a quiet MT!
That is what is just soooooooooooooo weird still with MQ. I don't know - I've been there for a long time, never talk to anybody, never hear from anybody, my account always has work, and its a great account. I have a back up, which I rarely get a report from. When I do, I admit, its challenging in that I have to look up a doctor here and there, but I just have never had a problem once.  I got transferred to Amherst, too, and everything is fine. No changes. I had some I-mail problems, along with everyone else, called the 1-800 # and got people on the phone immediately, who were super nice. Had a mistake with my check, my fault entered hours in wrong section, and got a person on the phone immediately, who fixed the problem and had a new check out to me the next day.  Its really a mystery to me why some have problems. When I do ask my bosses about it, they say my head would spin if I heard the problems some MTs are - how picky they are - how rude - cherry pickers or will only type on the 3rd Tuesday of the second week after a full moon - never answer THEIR phones, never answer emails, etc. Whole reverse of what I hear on this board 24/7. And I have to admit, I believe the office people who tell me their side, cause I know I've never experienced one singly problem that some MTs on this board whine about constantly.  And I've survived the new QA plan, no big deal at all, and survived the dreaded office transfer - nothing to it at all! So, I can't help but think that we somehow get the treatment we earn at MQ, or at any company for that matter.  And, no, please don't patronize me or kid yourselves. I'm just an MT with some time to kill on the boards tonight!

Give TT some time to see if they can find cheaper plans

I also am greatly upset by the insurance hike, but I have decided to give them some time to see if they can come up with something more affordable.  Like many of you, I have to insure my whole family, so this increase is astronomical.

The grass is not always greener.  Changing jobs means switching out problems, and yes, some problems are easier to deal with than others.  My last job (Amphion), I was so stressed out, I lost a lot of quality of life.  I have young children.  I can't afford to be a stressed out freak just like I can't afford the expensive health insurance.  When I moved to TT, I regained my quality of life.  I'm not so tired anymore, and I'm able to be a better mom.  That means the world to me.  I'll hang in patiently to see if another option can be found for the health insurance.
