HERE'S WHAT I DID.

If you are not opposed to managing your own little accounts, go out and find them  Four years ago after three nationals in 9 years, I was just fed up with all the out of work, low paying, greedy companies that just didn't care if I had a life one minute and then didn't care if I couldn't pay my bills the next.

I took matters into my own hands.  We are a pretty intelligent group and if the motivation is there, you can make this work.  I went to Goodwill and got some baskets, came home and spray painted them, made some cookies, got some candy and put together a little gift basket.  I put together a short business letter telling about my skills, 24-hour turnaround time, confidentiality practice, my rates (much higher than national pay), phone number, and printed it.  Tucked the letter inside the baskets and delivered them to clinics, included chiropractors, physical therapy groups, oral surgeons, etc., close to where I worked.  I woud go in and hand the basket to the front desk and quickly introduced myself, handed them the basket and told them this was for them and I only asked that they get the letter to the clinic manager.  I widened the area each day for 4 days.  Got 1 meeting for every 5 I left so was not too costly.

I do my own printing, I do have a microcasette recorder for tapes, make a trip each morning to three clinics (mileage a big deduction for taxes), drop off completed work and pickup tapes and head home.  The clinics provide envelopes and letterhead.  I usually work about 9 hours a day (but my choice of those 9 hours) and pretty happy with this life.  I do put money away for taxes.  Sometimes I don't need as much as I had put away;-)  Some days are busier than others depending on the clinics' patient flow.  I take breaks, go to lunch and feel more in control of my life.  I do take a vacation around holiday weekends, or just weekends and plan it so every clinic knows 2 months in advance.  I get out of this office every day and have a little contact with people in the clinics who invite me to luncheons, their holiday parties, etc.  I even found out what a weekend was again, though I do work about 6 hours Saturday and 2 hours on Sunday.

Just my suggestion for anyone that might find this as an option to a national and it sure works for me.
