I think 50% is about average given the current rates Ive seen for VRE
3-4.5 cpl for editing voice documents and 7-9 for transcribing. It does suck.
Focus - what are their average line rates??
You hear good, bad, so-so and ugly about them.  One thing you never see is what exactly are they paying.  I hate to waste my time talking, applying, or testing with anyone who doesn't disclose their pay rates.  I have extensive EXText experience, including the EXSpeech Turbo (which is awesome I might add).  I know that VR doesn't always pay as well as it should, but if it's a productive platform and I don't have to type 50-blue-million ESL guys, I don't expect to make 8 cpl.  However, just exactly what can you expect.  If I have to edit or transcribe quality work that doesn't require you to go back and fix every other report, or if I'm not sending tons of reports to the QA person to figure out my blanks, I expect to be able to make good money for my experience.  Is anyone willing to share what their pay rates are?  If I can't average 22-25 an hour....not worth looking at.
Pay rates
Your pay rate doesn't change. What this policy says is that IF you send a report with a CRITICAL error to a customer and it is returned, you may not be paid for that particular report. I don't see this as unfair frankly because the service can't bill a customer for that serious of a mistake in a document. It's all about us being accountable for our work. We want to be recognized for our value but don't want any of the responsibility that goes with that?

I turned down a job also because of low pay--company did not want to pay for spaces and added normals themselves so I wouldn't get paid. How low can you go? Wish we all would turn down low pay. Maybe it would send a message. I know this isn't realistic, but I'm wishing :)
pay rates sm
Just curious but which company does not want to pay for spaces? I know of one company that does add the normals and will not pay the MTs but it isn't any of the three mentioned here, can you enlighten us, please?

Thanks!
pay rates
There are two different platforms, one pays 9 cents per line without spaces and one pays 7-8 cents with spaces.
low rates
I have a friend who has a small MT company and she charges her clients 9 to 12 cpl (the 9 cpl accounts she types herself). She has a few ICs locally (usually pays 7 cpl). She is amazed when I tell her what other companies charge their clients but every time she tries to negotiate a little higher rate her clients tell her either it's the same low rate as always or they won't use her services anymore, so she feels stuck. We live in a low cost of living area, so the doctors are generally cheaper here, but for me personally, I wouldn't take that pay if I had to have the hassle of my own accounts, dealing with clients, billing, etc.
Especially re. pay rates....sm
The few MT contracts I have seen, employee or IC, are pretty vague on the subject of compensation, saying something like, ...The agreed-upon rate.  Agreed between whom?  Get a specific figure in writing, esp. re. rates per line, spaces, etc.  They can screw you up here without you knowing it, and how is agreed-upon rate going to hold up anywhere?
rates
Employee rates are 7.5 to 8.5 for dayshift, plus they have an incentive that you can make if you type an additional 200 lines per day.  That will add 1/2 cpl to your rate, they also have an additional 1 cpl for late shift plus the incentive.  The acute care rates are higher than the ER team rates.  They pay by direct deposit every 2 weeks. I started with MedScribe about 6 months ago and like the work and the new platform.
low rates
I have tried to reason with the company I work for, using all my logical arguments - it's best to pay a little more if you expect people to work on their days off, it's better to pay your experienced people a few cents more than to hire in outsiders when work gets behind, especially if your clients are already angry (come on, tell me that someone can just come in and do exceptional work with no experience on an account!), that it would be nice to get a raise or a sick day or some kind of incentive, and it has all fallen on deaf ears.

I believe there is money to be made in this business, but it is not the MTs who will be making it.
low rates
I turned down an offer this morning of 7.5 cpl for acute care.  I have over 20 years of experience and I refuse to accept that line rate.  It's an insult to all of us who have dedicated our lives to our profession.
MT Rates

If anyone knows the going rate being charged by MT companies or by individuals in Florida, North and South Carolina, would you mind posting it here..hubby and I are considering a move.  Thank you.

pay rates?
Anyone know companies that pay on the gross and/or straight line?
pay rates
But, because the vendors spew their crap about how this technology will save the hospitals so much money, the Editor pay is almost always decreased per line versus traditional transcription. Most editors are getting paid 3 to 4 cents per 65-character line, some are paid a % of their usual pay rate per line. It still means a decrease in overall income per hour.

How many MTs/editors are now working extra hours per week to make up that difference?

Although the vendors (keep in mind, they are salesman, they only care about selling their product -- they don't give a rat's a%% about how it affects anything else) claim that the technology keeps learning and improves, that is not always the case. A lot depends on the particular system, how many editors are involved, if the editors are ALL given the identical specs and following those account specifications.

I'm just sick and tired of new technology actually causing a decrease in my income. It should be a win-win situation for everyone involved in the process, but it never seems to benefit the MTs/editors.
Rates for Rad
I've worked for a company offering Rad on PowerScribe (and please ask how you are compensated for downtime) and rates for both editing AND MT should never be below a dollar, that's just insane. $1.25 to 1.50 is the going rate most places per report for MT.
Rates
I would suggest you talk them into using a digital recorder - then you don't have to drive for tapes, and the sound quality is better. There are many inexpensive ways to get the files to you, so you won't have to worry about gas, etc.

As for rates - I wish you the best of luck in getting them to pay the range you're considering. You have a shot at the low end, at the high end, if you can get it, I'll hire you to come do sales for me. ;)

PTO rates cut
If you thought the PTO time you have been banking at DRC/Acusis was going to be paid at the rate when you banked it -- dream on!  It's being paid at your CURRENT rate -- so for all my sister MTers, we lost bunches of money.  One wonders what is next??!!
Average pay
Just curious. What would be considered average as far as pay?

No one can help you unless you have an average
line rate.  If you were doing 1000 lines/day then the answer would be easy, but if you have no experience and little education you're not going to be making that number of lines for months.   You will be making minimum wage or less for a while.
Average pay

I hope you mean per week not month.

Yes, I average about 250 LPH and they do have some ESL
physicians. Many of their accounts are bad. I like the work though, the people and my team
Actually $1.10-$1.25 is the going average.
I work for a small MTSO at $1.10 a report and make more now than I did working for MDI-FL at $1.15 a report and another company at $1.25 a report. The work is steady and I easily get 200+ reports in 8 hours with no weekends. I don't think $1100+/week is bad pay but others might disagree.

If you get $1.25 a report but are unable to get over 100 reports - you are not making any money. Do the math and do what works best for you. Good luck!
$1.10 seems to be average...
Altho I make $1.50 and was just offered a job for $1.70, so if ya look around you can make more than the standard $1.10.
I don't know what the average is, but (sm)
can add my own past to the bucket. I had a base of 35K, and made bonuses on top of it. The bonuses were paid in chunks based on how long the MT stayed. So unlike some negatives I've read here, many times a recruiter only gets paid a bonus if the MT they hired stays with the company so many months. A very good year netted me 55K.

The work was stressful and long hours. Very stressful was coming on the Internet and seeing your name slung through mud on the bulletin boards. Some MTs would say that they weren't told things, when you absolutely KNEW they were because you kept a checklist as you talked.

Perhaps the most stressful part was being told one thing by the supervisors and owners about what accounts were like, what the shape of the company was, etc., and then relaying that publicly, only to find it wasn't true. The recruiter takes the fall for things like that in the MTs' minds. Unfortunately, as a recruiter, you only know so much and only control so much.

There are recruiters who will say anything to hire an MT. There are also honest ones. I am no longer a recruiter, but I'm proud that I always told the MTs the absolute truth and was the most successful recruiter for my national. It proved that you could be honest and still successful. Oh, and it helps to have been an MT before. I would never trust a recruiter who hadn't been an MT for a national!

Sorry so long. :) The pay can be good, but NEVER take a recruiting position that is commission only. There are too many factors out of your control, and those who hold the money will have too much control of your pay. Only accept one with a base pay that you would live on without assuming you'd make any bonuses.

Good luck!
Right now, I average about
275 lines an hour, but we are switching platforms, and I've heard bad things about it!!  I don't know if I can post who I'm working for, but there's a whole forum for them ;)
$1.25 seems to be the average (nm)

Do you mind telling me what you average on Meditech then??   I'm not the cherry-picker.   I'm the person who started this post?  Thanks.  Just don't wanna get sucked into a bad situation - again.

Average
Average would be about 15. Nothing great!
Is it below average?
and do I need any equipment or do they supply everything. Thanks to all for information.
that's average

Does anyone know what the average is??? nm
My friend get 4-1/2 cents and I thought I was doing good at 3-1/2. What is a good average?
Not the average
This is certainly not the average. I would have to work 2 entire 8 hour shifts to average 3000 lines on my account. The highest I ever got was 1500 lines and that was because I happened to get a lot of template dictations that day. Ordinarily get maybe 1 or 2 a day, sometimes none.
Their pay is average if not more than what is being
Isn't that what the OP asked for a supplement?  If you don't want a strict schedule, then sometimes you have to settle for a little less money unless you want a strict schedule and to work your life away.
15 cpl - way above average. nm

HUH? 319 LPH was my average

doing rad for a local hospital. (That's 2392 lines in an 8-hour shift with 0.5 off for lunch.)

That was in Word Client, based on a 65-character line, black characters and spaces counting.

Using your typing shortcuts (ESP in WC) should make that goal a piece of cake.

Was 600 - 700 lph your average?
Was 600 - 700 lph your average?
What could you average per day on that?
NM
My average LPH is at least 200 or so,
or I should say, it is when I put my head down and go for it, and not goof off with my e-mail and blog and watching baby panda bears live online, and other time-wasters.... :)

So if you calculate your own average LPH and do the math with your per-line rate, you can figure out how many lines it will take you to reach that magic minimum figure. Of course, it depends a great deal on your individual per-line rate....

Yesterday I spent waaaay too much time goofing off, and barely cracked 1000 lines for the day, which is just miserable for me....

A whole lot is going to depend on how low the workload actually is, and how much time you sit there staring at the screen (and surfing the net) while you wait for the next one. On the platform I work on (which is NOT Transcend's own) the new jobs pop in automatically, depending on what work pools I am assigned to; the next available job goes to the next available queue. I have no idea how it works on other platforms; if you have to keep manually checking, that really stinks, big time.

I hope this at least gives you some idea how it works--at least, this is how it works for me, on my team, the TRS transplanted DEP platform team. Can't speak for how it works for anyone else. My supervisor and leads are very good about keeping us informed several times a day about the workloads and the backlogs, and when there's no work (which is VERY rare), we are usually given the option to flex our time for that day, i.e. just leave early and perhaps try back later, especially if we check our e-mail and see by the latest backlog report that the workload has picked up; or we can switch to working on our usual day off; any way we can get in our time and our lines. They work very hard to make sure the workloads and the staff are distributed as best as possible.

But as I have said before, usually we do not run into the low-workload problem; in fact, it's most often the opposite. I wish I had a dollar for every Sunday morning I have gotten home from church to find an SOS message on my answering machine....
The insurance rates are the same for everyone who
signs up for that particular coverage. If you are signing up for employee only it will obviously be the lowest cost. If you add children and/or spouse and/or family coverage, those are all different coverage plans and each has a cost.

The benefits for Spheris are not negotiable. Therefore, if $202 was what they told you would be the cost of your insurance, then everyone who has the same coverage will pay that same rate.

Reasonable rates
Reasonable rates to you may be unreasonable to others.

If you don't feel you're being paid for your experience, then you're not.

As you can see below, when MTs start posting anything regarding rates, line counts, etc., flames start.

Decide what is reasonable for you and what is fair compensation for your experience. If MQ isn't paying it, talk to them. If they are, then congratulations!

line rates
When I started I was told line rates are based on years of experience and what account you work on.  When you are hired they give you a pay matrix so it is easy to see exactly what you are making.  They also pay a shift differential after 6PM and have an incentive plan that is paid at 12,000 per pay (2 weeks).
Pay Rates Have Not Changed -
It must have been the level of the account.
This is exactly why our rates are going into the toilet -
SOMEONE will nearly always work for whatever ridiculously low rate is offered!
Line rates
Why do all these companies keep dropping their line rates?  The cost of living sure isn't falling.
Line rates
Because they can get away with it. As an experienced MT, at this point I will go work doing something else before I will take less, but I am frustrated that there are so many out there who are willing to sell themselves short. I also will happily learn voice recognition or do QA but not at my expense. I keep wondering what the fallout in this profession will be.
Line Rates

Hi

Could anyone tell me what to expect for a decent line rate... I never see any ads for more than about 8-9c per line?  Thanks. Lou

They told me the rates and that I would be doing one
doctor within the first few seconds of my interview. I took the test an hour later, was hired two hours later and started two days later!

TRS ....line rates...etc.

Dear TRS-er --

I worked for TRS for a few months back in 2000 and had a very good experience with them, had to leave for unrelated reasons.  I cannot remember what they paid me per line, but I now have over 20 years of MT experience.  I am looking for 10 cents a line.  Do you think they will pay me that figure, or more?  And what if I take the CMT test (have not taken it yet), how much more will I get?

Also, do they ever run out of work for more than say a few hours?

Thanks for your answers...hope to chat more with you very soon, as I want to leave my present company very soon.

Thanks.

Linda

about insurance rates
A Tennessee-based MT company has decided to go with a high deductible insurance policy with a well-known insurance company.  It is going to cost the employees $2500 out of pocket before Blue Cross covers any medications.  It will cover the $20 copay to the doctor, but not medicines.  Is this right or way off base?  Would like some info on what others think.
line rates

We have different line rates for different accounts, ranging from 9 to 10 cents per line without spaces but include headers and footers and 8 cents per line with spaces.  Our MTs who transcribe on both platforms say their pay is the same day in and day out..
