I can totally understand a drug test and criminal background check, but...sm

In Reply to: Most companies of all kinds request credit reports these days, fair or not. - And criminal background checks, too. nm

personally I don't feel you can always judge the caliber of an employee based on a credit report. I know plenty of people who are the salt of the earth, of high moral standing and work ethic that may have encountered a unfortunate circumstance, i.e. job loss, car accident, excessive medical bills, that may have put a blemish on their credit report. They should not be discriminated against.

However, I do see where a credit report would be necessary for a position of relevance. I just don't see the justification for an at-home IC who is using their own equipment, paying their own taxes, etc. to have to submit this information.

I'll use my own situation as an example. A few years back my husband accrued an excessive amount of medical bills and I was unemployed because my job was outsourced. We were late on a few bills and are trying to rebuild our score so that we can get a good interest rate on a home. Every time that score is pulled, it drops a few points. We have worked very hard to rebuild this score just to have it drop because a company wants to know personal/private information. We as MTs are supposed to respect the privacy of patients and have HIPAA drilled into us daily. I feel my personal information should be respected as well. A criminal background check isn't personal information, but necessary for the safety of all involved.

Yes, I was told that you had to have a drug test and background check.

Doesn't Diskriter require criminal background check?
.
Which companies do criminal background checks?
no nasty comments, you wouldn't understand.  Just asking a question.  Thanx for your help.  It would save me alot of time to know this information.  Thank you.
Credit & criminal background checks

I'm thinking of applying to these companies and wonder which ones do these checks.  Don't judge me but anyone with teenagers knows that things can get out of hand.  Thank you.

Diskriter, Alltype, TTS, MDI-MD and (yes) Medquist.

Also, has anyone ever been hired and then fired for a stained record?

I'd like to know about the drug test thing too.

Do they really make you take a drug test?

They also require a drug test.

Does background check include credit check?

You must go through FBI background check
and it is VERRRRY thorough.
background check
Other than that they do a Background check, seems to be a pretty reputable company.
If I can do a background check on them to

background check
I work for a smaller company who does work for some larger hospitals and they do require background checks for all employees whether you work directly for the hospital or for the transcription company.  I would say most of the more reputable companie do require these checks.
You can also do a background check on companies
Check with the BBB and check with other agencies for reports against the company.

As an MTSO myself, I encourage that. It's always a good idea to check out what you're getting into. I have no problem with MTs sharing this information on a message board, either. I think it's a good thing. If an MTSO has a history of not paying employees, that is definitely something an MT needs to know in advance and if other MTs failed to report that to the BBB or other agencies, a message board may be the only place you can find that info.

However, when I work for someone, even if I have a problem with that company or person, I will keep my mouth shut until I quit. Once you no longer have a working relationship with them, then it's fair game. Until then, I prefer to zip my lip. I don't burn my bridges in case I would like a reference later and quitting always looks better on a resume than being let go. It's not a matter of loyalty, just good business sense. It will always be more beneficial to you, the MT, to keep your thoughts to yourself until you sever the working relationship.
you pee in a cup, they do background check, 30 days for ins.

BACKGROUND CHECK ON EVERYONE REGARDLESS WHAT ACCOUNTS

I was offered a position with Diskriter a couple of months ago for one of their biggest accounts and as their employee.  I decided against it was they needed to know my life, past and present, all my addresses, etc.  Not to mention they sent me about 30 different forms to fill out.  It was unreal.

I have nothing to hide but it is really none of their business about my personal life as long as it does not affect them or my job.

spheris background check
Does Spheris do background checks and if they do-for what reason do they not hire??
Background check Milner Transcription
Does anybody know if Milner Transcription in Georgia does a background check?
I agree with you about this, but the background check business...sm

has happened to  me before.  I DO have something that I'd rather not share with others, but my supervisors are aware of it.  If it comes up in a background check (it is not criminal and has not shown up previously) they are aware of it, I have not lied about it and it should not cause any problems.  I have been through this with 2 other companies in the recent past, no problems.

Background checks are expensive and I think the cost of doing a check in depth on everyone would be cost prohibitive.  Right now, if you know it or not, everyone who is employed in the US has to prove citizenship and eligibility to work in the US.  This is part of the Homeland Security Act and absolutely nothing to do with TT or their PEOs.  I am a recent hire and I had to go through this process with the previous PEO.  If you are legal to work in the US, you have nothing to worry about. There is your background check and you have George Bush to thank for it.

I wonder about some of you reactionaries.  What ever happened using common sense?  My mother told me not to believe everything I hear.  I extend that to not believing everything I read from an unreliable source, like a message board.

They asked for a background check but most companies do, don't they?
They asked for $55 for my background check. I have tried to search, Google, ect, and I can't find anything about them except more job listings. Any advice at all for a struggling newbie?
Get ready for the 'FBI type' background check

I refused to complete all of that paperwork and be subjected to such an extensive background check so I can work in my 'home office'.  I don't have any negatives, but thought this was rediculous, especially since I would be working from home. I think companies should focus on making sure the patients information is private.

I understand the premise of doing a simple background check, but they do a much more than that. Good luck.

no longer require physicals, but background check
a must - - hospitals that use their service require it, does not mean it is Diskriter policy but the hospital who use their service - - with all the identify theft out there, I didn't mind it at all - - if you don't have anything to hide you shouldnt either
I'm with you all; totally understand,
am in the same situation myself, but I know there were many times when we were backlogged that I could have worked to help out, but didn't. I can understand why they may have over-staffed, if that is what is happening. I, too, am trying to hang in and if it does not get better, then will have to accept another to supplement my income. I just believe that the FN staff is not indifferent to our needs and frustrations; they probably are frustrated for us, and I think they deserve whatever chance we can give them to get things straightened out.
I totally understand about this
I have worked on escription for several years now and it has gone from a good program to almost salad. It totally has regressed and I should know, being on the same hospital for all that time. I have gathered loads of mistakes it makes and presented to someone I thought would care but nothing came from it. The numbering can go from 2, 4, 2, 2, 2 and I am told we have to teach it. It was already taught and now back to first base, I guess. No periods, that is for sure, even when it knows the end of a sentence- because why would the next word be capitalized? Now leaves off the M.D. title at end of doctor's names, leaves off names of doctors in the middle of dictations, oh how I could go on and on.
i totally understand (sm)
i was an IC for them too, i said i'd work early morning until afternoon and would get emails from sm and a few others at 7:15 a.m. saying you were scheduled to work at 7:00, do you plan on working today i never knew i could do anything about it so i found another job seriously though, what benefit is there if i WERE to turn them in?
I totally understand
now. Thanks for clarifying. Its just so tough out there right now for everyone. :(
I totally understand how you feel.
I can relate ot what the other says also about knowing what kind of day your having based on the first few reports. For me, I realize it is mostly psychological. Honestly, if the first report is crappy, I can deal with knowing that I cannot expect perfect dictators/reports 100% of the time.  I can tell you after several of those with no end in sight it totally blows my mind and I feel worthless for the rest of the day. It's almost like instant burn out and I can't get in a good frame of mind to want to continue. The Monday-Friday jobs are few and far in between, but I'd keep looking. I'm discouraged now to the point where I did get another part-time job and when I log on, and if there is just garbage, I log right off and go to my other job, or I bounce back and forth so I get a break. It may not work for everyone but having two part-time jobs equals a FT job that I can tolerate. Needless to say, I work my second job a lot more. They can forget it if they think I'm spending my whole day doing junk..
I totally understand and went thru similar bunk not
too long ago. Especially the T company. The only bright side for you is that you haven't accepted their mispresented positions and then been burned further down the road, hoping beyond hope that things would work out. As for the big M, truly it is a mess, but literally that recruiting firm is brandie new and obviously mass confusion...no excuse, but your timing was sure off on that one!! That is actually why I stayed with the big M. I gave it my best shot out there, and tried several companies, only to run back from whence I started, NEVER to venture out into that job hunting mess again voluntarily....and then I think Wal-Mart would be more appealing. I am sorry things are the way they are - makes no sense to me either. Recruiters certainly lost my respect, too. Either most misinformed bunch of employees for so many companies, or lying thru their teeth to make new hire quota. Not interested in knowing the answer - probably never will, but a horror story for sure.
Good luck to you. I totally understand
nm
please check this out totally!!!!
I am a former employee of this company. This company does not pay on time, bounces payroll checks, and the owner, Deb Garrison, is very unprofessional. She will hollar on the telephone, refusing to answer questions about payroll at all. At this moment, I am still owed one final paycheck. This paycheck was due to be released on 7/20. Last week I was told it was be mailed this past Monday, 7/25. Deb refused to send FedEx; my cost and as she has done for all other checks in the past, and refused to send via priority mail. I contacted her today and was told the checks were mailed yesterday. I would advise serious consideration about this company. They reason they are hiring 20 MTs is because no one is getting paid and they are refusing to work. I can provide you with a listing of all the MTs who work for this company if you want to verify my story.
Sure, but nobody can understand the Ortho test dictation, no pedal, no speed control...sm

You may want to check out H2/H3 crash test studies....
or not.....
Some of it sounds criminal to me!

tell your friend to file criminal charges - sm
bouncing a check is against the law (except in Florida - where you have to go to small claims court). However, in MOST states (before anyone jumps down my throat) - in MOST states it is against the law to bounce checks and it is taken seriously and the owner CAN BE taken away in handcuffs and the court WILL ENFORCE that they make good on the checks.
I imagine nothing to worry about unless you're a criminal!

And much more!

Oh let me tell you, they know how to pass the drug tests! (sm)
One woman I worked with was talking about how to use "Yellow Root" to "beat" the drug test! (that's what she said, "beat" the drug test) They know all of the tricks of the trade. One company stopped using the urine drug test and now they use the hair strand drug test, so I don't know what they use to "beat" that one (I guess they pull the strands out of somebody else's hair!) :-)
Actually it goes even further back than the drug scene
This was a term meaning to start a fight, getting a fight on, older than the drug scene of even the 60s.
the drug thing happened with Kforce too
a couple of travelers that I personally knew were transporting drugs through rental cars, i.e. leaving one state and driving back to their home state to pick up drugs. One traveler actually had crystal meth Fed Ex'd directly to the hospital! The dealer got caught and the traveler was fired of course, but get this -- the traveler always managed to pass the drug tests!
I think they require drug testing, they pay, but a pain to have to go through that. nm
.
Drug testing is different because drugs are illegal and sm
Physicals are required for certain jobs......like firefighter, where a certain agility is needed. Also they are given agility tests.

Office jobs do not need to know your medical history.
hey I've typed that ER before! drug addicts adn crazies! nm

Had a conversation similar to this at the drug store today
One of the ladies behind the pharmacy counter talking about raising kids. I was telling her what a wonderful life now that the kids are grown and out. I guess you can say this matronly woman is having the time of her life. I have good money coming in, in fact now getting in more than my union husband does each month, travel when I want and those golden years. Now I know where that saying comes from. This is the best years of my life right now. The pharmacy person asked me did I not miss those years with the children. I told her did I miss struggling? Heck no. Did I miss the yah, yah, yah, again heck no. Ladies you just do not know what you are missing if not, as you call it, a matron.
Don't forget a drug reference. I like my Quick Look that is installed on my 'puter.

Yes, it's totally word based, but it's also totally slow.
I haven't had a very good experience using dictaphone EXText. I wouldn't recommend anyone work on this platform. I don't know how anyone can say this is a very productive platform in any way whatsoever. Actually, it is the worst I've ever worked on. I like Bayscribe, DocQscribe, and many others over this setup.
They do require urine drug testing for sure, no matter what accounts you work on, theirs or a hospit

also don't know your background but
have you archived for ebay selling? I know a couple of other MTers who pick up an extra couple hundred doing Ebay...maybe that is something up your alley/you can research? Just a thought. Good luck!

SCAM would not give them a dime. IF they want to do a background check on you it should be at the companies expense never should u have to pay.
I took a test for a company and my foot pedal would work with the test and I had keep going back
over the dictation time and again to get all the words because I couldnt stop and start it by the foot pedal.  What can I do about this.
You say you have the medical background, do you mean you took a course or you are just
a medical office worker? No one will give you half a chance unless you actually take a transcription course.
