Serving Over 20,000 US Medical Transcriptionists

Just a little slower than DQS in bringing jobs up, filling out screen. (sm)

Posted By: Checking on 2007-09-09
In Reply to: Don't know, but what's slow about ExText compared - to other software? I love using it! NM

Not a lot really, and the plus side of being able to research other documents by a particular physician or patient pretty much makes up for it.

Just thought I had heard something and was hoping there was an even better system coming about.

QA is more than filling in blanks and
3.5 cpl is ridiculous. People who take these jobs do not deserve any more than they wind up earning and they make these companies think they can get away with it. The only way to get paid to QA is to get paid by the hour, and I do not mean $10 an hour either! Shame on these companies. They will use the excuse that they cannot afford to pay higher. Don't buy it. It is not true. It is greed and nothing less.

THANK YOU for filling us in - Wish management would have (sm)
but this is really good news for all of us, especially those of us who have not been able to afford it for a long time. Love this company and so grateful to have this kind of place to work. Appreciate again the information!
If your not clocking in or filling out sm
some sort of documentation of your hours, then it's computed through your hands on the keyboard somehow.  How would you be paid OT if your hours aren't actually documented in some way?
Mercy, of course filling in blanks is ok BUT
not 30, 40, 50 or 60 blanks in EVERY report from the SAME LAZY/UNTRAINED MTs. Don't criticize QAs who have a problem doing this baloney. One company I used to work for NEVER did audits and what they got was swiss cheese reports from people who didn't care, and I was simply wondering who the companies are who don't put up with that now since I've been away a few years. Thank you.
I don't remember filling out all that paperwork.

I remember how peeved everyone was about having to do it and I think it was resolved without the background checks, etc. I could be wrong, 'cause that was about 2 years ago and my memory fails me after 1-1/2 days. LOL

I surely would like some truth for a change and not inuendos or plain old hate towards the company from posters. They never really answer the questions posted on where they get their facts, so I question if their posts are truthful or if they just want to cause trouble, or rile everyone up like they have been doing.

Filling out applications now to leave Transcend
Its gotten worse. I cannot afford to work there anymore. I understand their transition and growing pains, but I am not rich and cannot afford to donate my time any longer. Too many problems.
Just bringing up from below

Many years ago, when I worked in house for a local clinic, we had a Transcriptionist who had just graduated from a medical transcription course (I believe it was through the local community college since this was back in the early 1990s), and everytime this gal came across something she didn't know, she would ask the other transcriptionist or I how to spell it.  I truly think sometimes one of the BIGGEST problems is the fact that nowadays, people are not taught the proper way to spell or even how to research for that matter; for example not realizing that a spelling with an f sound could be spelled with a ph or Pf et cetra.

One classic example was a few years ago, and I was doing QA for a company and this company hired a friend of mine an older lady, who had decided to go into medical transcription and had completed a course.  Well, the company hired her on my recommendation and she called me one day, very upset and saying that she had received another email from a QA person, whom she felt was picking on her.  I asked her what the error was about and she stated that it was over the word chem as in chem-7 (which as an aside, I have NEVER abbreviated; always spelled it out as chemistry-7)  -- well anyway, my friend had typed it as Kem-7, so while I was on the phone with her I made her do a search, and what she came upon with the first hit was some rock band in a foreign country!!!!  This, is what I and older, more experienced transcriptionists get angry about is the fact that many people if they use the internet to do a search will use the first thing that comes to mind, rather than tryng to spell it several different ways to see if it fits in the PROPER context.  Sorry for this being too long.

if your a slower typist, go for the $15, but.....
If you have speed and can utilize your normals, definitely take production. There are hours where I make $40 an hour at 9 cents per line. I would never go hourly.

Yes, that is another reason why I am going slower. Although
I have just made the 11K, and trending upward, I still make the QA bonus every time. I have been in the business a long time, and perhaps that is why I stopped a consistent over 20K a payperiod. Over the years the patient care meant more to me than the extra 100 bucks a payperiod. I know some may think that is ridiculous, but it kicked in when I hit 40 years old. Maybe my conscience, or just wanting to do a quality job and a good line count. Again, Expanders will help with typos but research needs to be done before leaving blanks too and that takes time sometimes. I don't mind researching 4 sources but then I will put a blank if I am not sure because of an accent. So that is correct 2K is no good if it is not a quality 2K. Better make less lines and 99% QA and trend slowly upward, which can be done with your own canned text and their normals. Good luck!
First of all, I think she means filling in an inordinate number of blanks. Secondly...

QA's job should be solely filling in blanks.  It should be to perform routine and random quality checks, it should be researching and educating MTs on new terminology, new procedures, new drugs, it should be maintaining and updating account specs, and it should be assisting newly hired MTs in their transition from training to productive employee.

Far too many MTs see QA as a safety net and big gigantic kitchen sink where they can toss in their crap and out comes something shiny and clean, an excuse to never research a new word or look up the correct spelling of a doctor's name because QA will do the work for you and you'll still get paid for your lines.

And QA used to let MTs get away with it back in the day when they were paid hourly, but the majority of QA people are paid on production now too and so when MTs don't try hard at their jobs, that means QA picks of the slack and loses money.  QA gets reports that look like swiss cheese and we have to practically transcribe the entire report to fill in the holes because of lazy MTs with the looking out of numero uno mentality.

You are lost and the WRONG site filling out an application for who knows what???nm
xxx
Thank you for bringing that to my attention. DONE! sm

I am writing to request that you support the above bill. I am a medical Transcriptionist in Wyoming. I make an above-average income, which I spend in my community, but my job is at risk because so much of this work is being outsourced, particularly to India. More importantly, the health and privacy of the American public is being put at risk by this practice. First, Indian transcriptionists do their job poorly and inefficiently. The gross errors jeopardize health care. Every error has the potential to injure or poison an American citizen, including many young children for whom accurate diagnoses and medication administration can be a life and death issue. To add insult to injury, Indian transcriptionists are NOT required to honor HIPAA. Once a physician's dictation leaves this country, it is no longer private.

I am a very hard working medical transcriptionist and I am still able to earn a decent living in this industry, but it is certainly not what it used to be. I am paid 9 cents for every 65 Keystrokes I type, whereas an Indian is paid 2 to 3 cents for the same work. This undercutting has hurt this industry and every woman (95% of us are female), many of whom are trying to support families on their own, has been dragged to the poverty line because our wages have not grown with the cost of living. I make 9 cents today and I made 9 cents in 1996, the year my career began.

Please protect the healthcare and privacy of Americans, and help to protect yet another industry from moving to overseas. Support and sign S.810/H.R. 1653.

Bringing to the top - wouldn't any of us in D's

I worked for MDI.  I loved MDI.  I have always known D to be someone of yes, integrity.  I don't believe her integrity flew out the window.  There is surely a lot we don't know.  And of course, D would not have been at liberty to discuss the coming merger before it happened.

D is a businesswoman.  The purpose of a business is to generate income.  She ran her company with honesty and integrity.  I can't say I wasn't suprised, shocked even, at what has happened.  But I have known D since the early 90s and I know she is a good person and truly cares about people.  I don't know how to reconcile that with what has happened other than to think there is more to the story than we know and that it is the decision that D needed to make at this time for whatever reason, whether it be to ensure a secure retirement, whether it was because she was no longer able to compete with offshoring and VR (I think this may be part of it because she had told me at one time they were having to cut line rates to compete with VR and offshoring) or whether she was just tired and ready to not be the one at the helm any longer.  Maybe it's her health, or her husband's health.  We just don't know.

This whole thing does make me afraid for the future of medical transcription, because another thought I had was that D saw the writing on the wall and knew it was either make the leap now and profit from all her years of hard work, or end up losing it all when transcription becomes obsolete for the most part, or at least for those who don't use VR or offshoring.

Whatever the reasons, I choose to believe that D is still the person of integrity I have always known her to be.  I just choose to accept that there must be more to the story than I know.

I wish the best to D and to all MDIers.  I feel like an era has come to a close and it will never be the same again.  But I feel lucky to have been a part of Signal and MDI and to have known D.

I feel like we are on the Titanic and we just saw D either jump to safety or jump into shark-infested waters, we don't know which, and we don't know whether we should jump or cling to the boat - because MDI was the last lifeboat and now it's gone.

You will. Some people's mail is slower.
nm
Maybe you ought to read my post a little slower
I had several e mails with Keystrokes and was PROMISED a phone call. One thing I neglected to mention in my OP is that they stated late last night that they HAD called me, with no answer. My phone NEVER rang Monday OR Tuesday. I have caller ID, nothing there either. I checked my telephone calls online, nothing there either. They did not call and they do not get a second chance with me.
Bayscribe slower than DocQscribe
Bayscribe is slower than DocQscribe. One thing is you have to chose which report type you want to transcribe next after each report and then wait for the screen to reload whereas in DQS it is already filled in and no waiting. Their doctor roster is not as user friendly as DQS. You do get credit for filling in demographics which amounts to about 1 line per report.
I find it idiotic to even say a slower
person could do better on VR. You CANNOT be slow and go through VR as fast as you need to make a decent salary, just cannot be done. Typing straight I could do over 2000 a day, now with VR I do over 3000 a day but it has nothing to do with being slow norr a newbie, heard that before too. Both things are really laughable.
Bringing up thread on Precyse sm

I just got off the phone with someone from Precyse and they have terrible communication and no flexibility.  She kept IMing another lady to ask questions.  Had to check with another person to see if I could do Monday through Friday.  Made it sound like she would really have to do some fancy talking to get that.  I had put in my info that I wanted to work from 6 am to 12 pm and she just read that as she was talking to me and said there was no way.  Told her that I am capable of doing full time line requirement in those hours and she said there had to be the hourly coverage there.

I was just not impressed at all.  She really did not seem like she knew what was going on, could have been a little more prepared for an interview.  I just wasted 10 minutes of my time!

bringing MTSO question below

Sugestion - when MTs complain their account is too hard. Instead of giving them something easier and pushing hard work on more experience Mts, assign the complainer exclusively to hard account until they are competent. Only way to be fair to distribute. Everyplace I work the complainers get the easy accounts.

Bringing up my question on ProScript below
Didn't get any answers, so don't know if that's good or bad, maybe they're just a pretty small company and don't have many people working?  Anyone know anything about them recently?  Trying to update my notes for companies that may be interesting to check on.  Thanks!
Bringing up "who's going to stand up for us" from below

First, flamers, never mind, I'm not talking to you.

So we are all spread out but all of us know other MTs whether we work for the same company or not.  If everyone communicates with those they know and asks them to do the same, word will spread like wildfire and something really CAN be done.  Sitting around complaining and doing nothing accomplishes NOTHING.  As near as I can figure one MTSO is as good (or bad) as the next so they could all use an attitude adjustment.

I am a slower but accurate producer, around 1000 sm
lines in 8 hours. Are there any companies out there that would value me as an employee?  Seems like everyone wants 1200 lines or better or you are out the door.
I think it's a lot slower. I'm having a hard time getting lines, but I'm
nm
It has been a little slower this week but depends on the account your on.

The escription accounts seem to be really slow. You may need to ask for a backup account if you don't have one so I'd get ahold of your account manager.

Not only bringing suit, but our profession's tendency - sm
for it's members to behave like pirhanas towards one another whenever someone mentions something different. Yes, this topic IN GENERAL has been on the news before, but it needs to get more up-close and personal. To begin with, showing what MT really is, how it works, who does it and where, and how it integrates with their doctors, their insurance, and their healthcare, and just HOW MUCH of their personal, NON-MEDICAL information is really contained in their medical records. Then they might just START to care.
Bringing to the top, re Transcend's platforms: How is Beyond Textl? SM

Is it productive at all?  I think it is a VR and transcription mixture and may actually belong to MDI-FL.  Thanks!

No she's not. She's obviiously replying to a post by DB and bringing to top. nm

That doesnt sound too slow to me.. I would probably be slower, I am tired and old too.
Wish it were just my fingers though.
No we won't. I said slow, meaning slower than usual, should have clarified.
.
Some hospitals are actually bringing transcription back in house.
I have heard of more and more hospitals bringing transcription back in house and using independent contractors as well as in-house staff to get the job done. So far, it is working out well for most hospitals and, believe it or not, saving the hospital more money then sending it to a service.

Imagine that!!!

Hopefully, 90% of the health services and facilities will bring it back in house and soon!!!!
The only thing I noticed was counts slower to post - but accurate,I think

RE: Old eyes/new screen
Are any of you having trouble with focusing on the new white screen.  I've been in DOS for so long I forgot what a strain the white can be.  If you're having trouble, how are you handling it (and not losing time transcribing)?
See the top of screen SEARCH BOX sm
enter you company name there.
You will need to change it in screen preferences...sm
On your desktop right click and pick properties. From that window pick appearance. From there pick advanced and then you will have to click on the window that says window text and you will see in the middle a line that says item: window and to the right of that you will see a box that is white in color. Click on the little arrow thare and it will give you some colors or you can click other and then pick the exact color you want. From there once you find the color you want click okay and the color should stick for all the text windows in all your applications. I wish I could show you screen shots of this, but if you need to email me for more clarification.
SGS, eScription, one screen, avg 200 lph. Easy

They are d/l in the background, but once the next demo screen comes up,
it takes forever for the actual typing screen to come up. Frustrating.
What companies pay for demographic screen?
I am not aware of any, but have not worked for more than a few. Just curious.
If you try adding more than one time the ESP screen
will be behind your other screens. If you minimize them you will see it.
funny, I catch this ad at top of screen

so no platform, no patient info screen, etc....
I really like working for companies that have a platform. It seems to be faster for me. I type for a company with no platform and I have to download FTP files. It seems to slow me down.
I don't think so. What you see on paper or on the screen in black and white.
If it were me, I certainly would ask specifically the HR person or MTSO. Pick up the phone, dial their number, and ask. Never take a job, unless you know how and what you are getting paid for.

I do believe it means without spaces, but I could be wrong. Things change so fast in this industry, what it means one day, does not necessarily have the same definition tomorrow.
I do the same. I am constantly looking at the screen while listening and transcribing. sm
I can't even imagine having to go over every single word again.  It is easy to proof while you transcribe.  If there was something particularly difficult or troubling, I would go over that portion again, but never the entire thing.
They got the dreaded "blue screen of death.
x
Go to bottom right hand side of screen ....
Above where the time is shown. See the magnifying glass and the percentage? You probably bumped it to 110% (I accidentally do it all the time). Just use the pull-down menu and change it back to 100%.

I'm lol'ing because I did this several times and rebooted before I figured out what I was doing and how to fix it.

Hope this helps!!!

:-)
Hahaha, don't hate me, but I have the beautiful NJA screen right now!!
And I am very happy to see it. Off to drink a hot cup of coffee and bask in the warmth of the morning sunshine.
