My take on MDI-MD VR

I read the posts back in March and earlier April 2009 just today and would like to share my 2 cents about MDI-MD and a few accounts going to VR. I've been with MDI-MD about 2 years now, came here from MQ. I have almost 25 yrs of experience as an MT. I am not management. My primary account is going to VR end of April. Some of what I write her will be repeat. There was a recent phone conference with all MTs, Dorothy, Carlotta, and Don, and it was very informative and, IMO, honest. D expressed much concern for MTs and did not want to to go VR. The hospital chose this - actually, there is a group of hospitals that MDI has as accounts, and that group will go to VR because of being under same umbrella. There is no plan for any other accounts to go to VR, and D said flat out she is a believer in straight transcription. The pay is 4 cpl. Not 3 cpl. I have not heard of any other bonus related to it. We have to QA our own work and maintain high accuracy, but that should be nothing new. Many MTs on these accounts have been on them forever (and this was mentioned as being a big bonus to learning VR on these accounts - I've worked on 2 of them and think they are good) and D was concerned about all of us not having enough work if she did not go to VR WITH the hospitals. Another account is coming on in the next month, and I was told this was obtained for this very reason, so there would be enough work.

As for enough work: I know others have not had the experience I am about to describe. But, this is mine in the last 2 years. We ALL know the feast & famine, and MDI has it, no doubt. I have asked to be cross-trained on numerous other accounts and learn them well so that when the famine hits, I can move to other accounts. SURE this slows me down, SURE it's a pain to go back to the readme file to refamilarize myself, SURE my line count goes down - but, guess what the alternative is? To sit and be ticked off, complain, raise my BP, and make little to no money? We have a choice. Know that MDI is not like MQ with its cesspool and requiring you to work on a bazillion accounts randomly. It is not like that! We have a choice... they have a ton of really good accounts, though as we all know, every account has the difficult doctors, ESL or not. Anyway, I have never run out of work in 2 years. There have been runs of time near holidays or randomly where I cycle through every account I'm on. Hardly fun or productive, but I'm still making money instead of going to do a load of laundry or something else and then coming back to check my 2 or 3 accounts to see if there is work yet. During the inevitable famines, even with a boatload of accounts, yes, the work seems to dribble in.

After finally leaving MQ, I have only had positive experiences with MDI. There are times the emails hollering for more and more help on accounts can be frustrating, especially when my primary stays busy and the other accounts are all going crazy... But otherwise, I am proud to be with this company. I believe Dorothy has our best interests at heart.

If, down the road, she does choose to take the accounts to VR for whatever reason, well, then I will deal with that then. Right now, I don't believe she will, I believe what she says, I think she is an honorable person. As she said to all of us on that phone conference, she is not beholden to investors or shareholders or boards and she is not in debt - she answers to herself, her staff, and to us. Maybe that means nothing to others, but after being with MQ, it means a whole lot to me.

Bottom line about these few MDI accounts going to VR because the hospital chose it: It may really stink. We may not be able to make any money at it and our days will get longer. We may also make good money on it and love it. We cannot know until we try it, and that is what we were encouraged to be open about. Give it a try, get the experience. I did not get the feeling that if I turn out to be an MT who it just does not work for, that I will be stuck in VR you-know-where for the rest of my MT career. There are options.

Thanks for listening.
