Response to your post re: Wireless

Just a bit confused regarding your post and wireless. You mentioned that TT said it was not acceptable. Are you referring to a wireless router set up, where for example you are getting a signal off of someone else's wireless connection or are you referring to an air card through a cell phone provider?

The reason I ask is that I live in town and can hook up through my landlady's wireless router, however, the signal is not very strong and I have had problems with connecting through the VPN at times and staying connected. I also have a USB wireless air card, which I purchased through Sprint when I lived in a rural area and could not get either cable or DSL for a period of time. Spint, Verizon and many of the other cell phone carriers now have USB wireless air cards which you just plug into a free USB port on your computer. The biggest problem with this kind of card is that you have to be in relatively close proximity to a cell phone tower in order to be able to get any kind of speed for your uploads and downloads.

Also, with an air card, you have to commit to so many years, and you may have to pay for the card. I was lucky enough to get my air card through Sprint for free (Normally around $200 I think) and I pay $60 a month for unlimited internet service.

There are MANY companies out there that allow this kind of a setup. The company that I am working for now allows this, as well as FutureNet. Most of the time, if you explain the situation of having an air card to your technical person, there are ways of getting the program to work. Hope this helps.

i appreciate your response and post but....

take it to email and more personally than to expose it publicly on an internet bulletin board.

Here's my response to your post....sm

1.  If you've been gone 7 months why do you care?  How do you know who the supposed troublemakers were if there were any?

2.  Since you've been gone a while you haven't seen the communications to the employees, therefore it's unfair of you to judge anything about what the company has done since you left and is doing in the future.

3.  The company was open and honest about this experiment with offshore labor - didn't try to hide it like other companies have done.  They could have not said anything, done it, and the transcriptionists wouldn't have known for months.

4.  Experimenting and doing are 2 different things - and just because something is being explored doesn't mean it will be a done deal.

5.  The company fought considering using offshore labor but with the government not caring about it across the US or federal labor it's hard for anyone to fight it permanently - see the administrator for MTStars comments.  IT's not just transcription getting hit by offshore competition.  It's other jobs as well.  Ford is closing plants due to offshore competition.  Kraft is closing plants.  Other companies are doing the same thing and moving jobs overseas.  Stinks doesn't it?  But until we citizens of the US start insisting on stiff tariffs to anyone using labor outside of the US the trend will continue, especially since the lawmakers don't give a crud (probably due to payoffs).

6.  If you're really making all of the money you're claiming then good for you - especially if you're not working extra hours.  Be happy for yourself and don't knock another company.  It makes you look bad.   One person's dream job is another person's disaster.  I'm sure that where-ever you're working now has people who say bad things about it.

No and re-read my post - I sent an email to payroll with my banking information and asked them to Fed-Ex my check directly to the bank -- yes, I am having a payroll deduction for this, but it is because for the branch of my bank it is 3 hours away.

JLG is NOT the only company that does this as FutureNet does it as well as far as no DD and mailing or sending checks.
I really don't know why the post below is in response to
my post. I have no complaints about CardioScribes. I just wanted to let the original poster know that I did receive my line count report and she would also receive hers. I am very happy at CardioScribes. I had some issues in the beginning, but my team lead and Tonya went out of their way to address my issues, which are no longer issues. In other words, they took care of me and did everything in their power to make me happy and that I am....HAPPY!

Please post your response
Please be sure to publicize the IRS response you get. That way, these companies will get the idea this is wrong and can't dispute it. Plus, we'd all like to know too. If the answer is out there enough, the MTSOs will have to abide by it.

I had the same thing -- hired by companies -- DD thing and if not immediate a paper check -- then for some reason it didn't work either way, I have never had a problem with identity theft on the part of an employer even after leaving for several months -- I just think that if it did happen, the bank could trace it and the MTSO employee who tried to do it would be in deep poop
In response to your post

Most of the companies that I have worked for in the past had a built in method of counting lines.  I was told by the person who supervised me at the company to just take the character count iwth lines and spaces in Microsoft Word and divide by 65 which is what I did.  When the line count came back from the hospital with them using Sylcount, by their methods, I had been shorted approximately 1,000 lines.  I am being compensated by the company for those lines.  I then proceeded the other day to download both Practicount and Sylcount, however for some reason, I could not get a line count.  With Sylcount, it was a trial version, and I found out via the grapevine that with a trial version, it would not count the lines.  I then received a liscened copy of Practicount, from the company; however, again for some reason, it would not count the lines.  As to the other issue involved, because of a family emergency with my current landlord, I am having to find another place to rent.  Right now, my search is limited to weekends and this was explained to both the supervisor and the owner of the company but to no avail.

I think it may have been in response to the post just below from Wanda....

the post was removed and my response
I worked for them, if you do clinic, ask about demographics, as you need to find the schedule, then find the name and MRN, go back, fill in all demo screens, takes a lot of time, for a 2 minute note, is a waste, you won't get a lot of lines that way. My QA was good, supervisor was not. University accounts have a lot of different dictators. They pay on time.
In response to Janets post

Janet, in response to your question  -- you work 5 days a week, if your schedule falls on a weekend or a holiday  -- yes, you are EXPECTED to work  -- holidays are a bit lax -- I am NOT taking it out on you personally, but HOSPITALS operate 24/7 and 365 days a year  -- my daughter is a nurse and does not get holidays off unless she schedules way in advance (and she is just a year into her career)  -- I get soooo tired of I don't want to work weekends, I don't want to work holidays that I could scream  -- I know you took the job to be with your kids but think of how business would be otherwise  - when I was growing up, stores used to be TOTALLY closed on Sunday  -- this is no longer the case  -- bet the grocery checkers and everyone else dosent gripe about working weekends or holidays  -- Ithis is a career and you have to take the good with the bad.

I normally get up in the morning, have my coffee check email do checking of my system and hit the ground running  -- sometimes I have good days and sometimes I have awful days, but I have been in this profession for over 30 years and if I have had to had a holiday off, move et cetra I have scheduled it ahead of time  either that too, holidays do not necessarily have to be celebrated on THAT PARTICULAR day.

Off my soapbox

I recall your post. You did not get a response and it was YOU
who were very rude and downright nasty. My goodness, you have no insight whatsoever.

The answer to your question would have taken a great deal of time to answer, perhaps others did not want to get into it.

I decided NOPE after I read your post, though never did find initial post question.

Not sure, but I come across people who literally expect adoption papers to be taken out and get angry when this does not come about.

I think ya all DO have a
hip aw rooon the shoulder, just don't have the energy or inclination to bother. Sorry.
I'm unclear as to what this response has to do with My Opinion's post.

Jo..I e-mailed you a response about your original post....(nm)

mmmm

Do you think you get a better response to post your resume on here or answer ads on here. Which one
seems to give the best result.
With all the negative posts in response to a positive post, I am

surprised that anyone posts anything here.

I do not work for Keystrokes but I like to see what is out there, and the benefits they are offered, if coupled with a decent line rate and steady work load, are better than most I have seen.

Gone are the days of fully-paid pension plans.  Gone are the days of three weeks' vacation.  Employers cannot afford these, and not just in transcription.

If you aren't interested or do not like something, just ignore the post.  You obviously were interested or you would not have read it.

Can't we cut back on the nasty posts on this board?  If it does not concern you, don't criticize.

If you are not looking for a new position, don't gripe about ones that are being offered.  If you are looking and a company's line rates, benefits or perks don't meet your personal requirements, why cut that company down?  Just move on and good luck finding what you are looking for.

I agree with the poster about being mad at the entire industry, but I still love my career choice.  It has been a good fit for me and has allowed me to live a nice lifestyle.

If I wasn't happy, I'd move on to another career.

good post, but in response to 'why apply if you don't want the job'....

This is only my opinion.  If I am considering taking on a new account, I will send my resume' out to a few companies, and see what offers come in.  If it takes one company a day or two to make an offer and another company a week, I may not be available in a week.

Not sure if you think it is proper to send out a resume to just one company, and cross fingers hoping they will call with a decent offer.  I, for one, prefer to interview the company, not have the company interview me.

Hope this sheds some insight on why you may not receive a call back from those who submit their resume'.  You may be taking too long to get back to them.

did anyone get a response from the original poster? this post is just fishy, especially since they

Wireless
Does anyone have wireless internet service or know anything about it such as how it works, price, etc?
wireless

You can use wireless with your company?  I thought most companies did not allow it. Do a lot of people use wireless now?

Thanks!

Wireless
If at all possible, I would avoid the wireless; it will be slower and not as reliable as a wired connection.  You might want to make sure you are set up where there will be no interference between you and the router.  You might want to call your internet service provider to guide you also.  Overall, the best thing would be to use wired.
Wireless is NOT okay.
You must have cable or DSL.
WHAT ABOUT WIRELESS DSL?
I have a wireless setup at home, but it is still DSL, and it works great.  There is a big difference here between wireless in an airplane, hotel room, coffee shop, etc., vs wireless at home.
Wireless
When you are referring to your post, are you referring to using a wireless router or an air card -- if it is regarding an air card, I would suggest searching the archives as there are several posts regarding an air card from Sprint, AT&T, Verizon, etc.

I have wireless high-speed broadband. TT said it is not compatible. Live rural and have no choice.

USB or Wireless?
Any experienced MTs have insight on whether to go wireless or stick with the 'ol USB/wired connection for a keyboard/mouse set?  I need to turn over my current wireless set as it is too tempermental but not sure which way to go.  I love no wires but am not convinced wireless can keep up/is dependable to match every key stroke.  If anyone is using a wireless set, what would you recommend?  Thanks for any advice.

Axolotl and wireless

Is there anyone who is currently working for Axolotl who is using a wireless card in their PC?  I am having a problem with being able to hook straight up to DSL because of having to stay with relatives.  I am scheduled to start training on the 26th, but am afraid wireless wouldn't work.  So, if anyone is currently working there, could you tell me if you have tried it or will it not work well with the VPN?

Try to find out if you have wireless DSL in your area. sm
I live in a more rural area but have a couple of those kinds of providers to choose from and get 2M downloads and uploads.
I have wireless (not cell, not satellite)
I'm frustrated as well. I live way out in the country and was told when I bought property that there would soon be hard phone lines. They renegged after I moved in and now the only choice I have for phones and Internet is a very lame Vonage VOIP (voice over Internet) service. It's the worst phone service I've ever had, many outages, and slow Internet, only slightly faster than dial-up. I've complained to the FCC and BBB, but it never gets any better. I worked for Medquist no problem for 6 years with their digital files downloading just fine and listening to those files through my computer, but now I'm using a C-phone and making only 1/3 what I used to through no fault of my own. It's just that I can't hear any full word and have to keep relistening. I've already been turned down by 2 companies because I had a wireless service and I'm very frustrated right now. I don't want to go back to Medquist, but I'll have to and just suffer the indignity and curse my phone company and people who sold me this property.
Just curious, why would not wireless work? I use - sm - Not OP
a wireless USB modem now as I do not have DSL or cable and cannot get satellite where I am (too many trees). I use it the wireless w/o any problem for an internet based platform. If this company also uses an internet based platform then where is the problem? I find my Wireless aircard (875U) slower than DSL but a huge improvement on dial-up. It takes me about 4 minutes to download a 19 minute file, whereas before it took 8-10 minutes; and only 1-2 minutes for 10 minute files, etc. Sure it is not as fast but it still works just fine. So I would think that a USB Wireless Aircard would work just fine for any company that uses an internet platform.
Companies that allow satellite or wireless?
Currently stuck with slow, slow dial-up and can't hardly stand it any longer! Considering investing in satellite or maybe wireless card.  My current employer will accept this but since you never know what the future holds in the MT world, just wondering about other companies that might allow this.  Would hate to be tied in for a two year or more contract plus any upfront costs on something that I could not use for work, so if any one could give me some suggestions about companies, I'd appreciate it so much  Thanks for any info
Line-of-sight wireless

Does anyone know of any companies that will allow you to work with line-of-sight wireless?  I live in a rural area and cable or DSL simply is not available to me.  It is not satellite - it receives its signal from radio waves.  I am having trouble finding a company that will let you use this.  Thanks

I use both a wireless mouse and keyboard
and love it! I've used both the Microsoft 7000 wireless keyboard and mouse as well as the Logitech wave wireless keyboard and have no problems with either one keeping up with fast keystrokes.
Spheris- no WIRELESS routers
Yes, I agree. Most people have other people living with them who use computers. After going on message boards and getting no response, I went further into the packet and saw an agreement I had to sign that I will not use a WIRELESS router and the Spheris computer has to be hooked up with regular cord, not wireless router. I don't have the wireless, I have the Ethernet cord.
Speed may not be the issue; wireless needs to be secure.
nm
Even with a wireless modem you can hardwire a computer
The majority of wireless modems also allow you to connect a computer by ethernet to them.  I have a wireless home network in my home and have my work computer connected directly to the modem via ethernet cable, but my 2 personal computers are set up wireless.  It's easy to do.  The modem is connected to the cable or DSL jack, and then you run an ethernet cable out of the back of the modem to your work computer.  Meanwhile, any other computers you have can be run wireless using the wireless adapters.
Correction--I should have said wireless router, not modem
Wireless routers allow you to hook your computer up via ethernet.  It goes between the modem and the computer.
Does Axolotl accept wireless or satellite? nm

I betcha it IS HIPAA regs that rule out wireless
Doctors etc. cannot use cell phones to dictate their reports, right? If this is true, I bet the use of wireless to deliver their dictations to at-home transcriptionists is considered potentially not secure. Well, two modems it is for me and I am really glad I asked this question. Thank you all for your feedback.
