I work what hours I want as an SE. I don't work a set schedule. I do commit to a certain volume of work per day and just get that done whenever I want.

Also, lots of companies do hire at IC status. Whether or not you agree that makes it true IC status or not, that is what they call it. But I agree with you that some services hire at IC status and they try to make you conform to certain days/times to work, which is totally wrong for IC status.
