Sadly, its one of the oldest tricks in this business.

Always has happened to me, whatever mode of delivery for the work. In the days of tapes, I would get double or triple what I requested. Now its the same thing, thus why I don't take any jobs on the side now. I would always, always ask for a minimum amount of work, which the owner gladly agreed to, only to be bombed. Then the whole guilt game would start...Not for me anymore! Its so counterproductive in the long run - makes us resentful, right? Why not just give the MTs what they agreed to, right? Oh well!

There are a few tricks.
1. Type the report all the way through and leave blanks as needed.
2. Relisten to the blanks and you'll catch a few of them after having listened to the whole report.
3. Copy and paste the report into your Expander or into Notepad and save it as a file with the doctor's name and report type as the file name.
4. Next time you get that dictator and type of report, expand the report and edit as you listen. You'll always pick up more of what he is saying. After a few dictations, you'll have a complete, or almost complete, copy to use over and over.
Dirty tricks

If they tell MTs that an account is going away and that the MTs need to find other jobs, that's the equivalent of a lay off, at which time the employee would be entitled to unemployment benefits.  However, if there is no work and the employee does not show up, the company can claim that the employee was fired due to a no show.  With this scenario, the employee might not be able to collect unemployment.  Employees need to show up, count all hours worked whether actual jobs were available or not, and report all of those hours on the new timesaver website.

If you receive any complaints about reporting all hours worked on the timesaver website, keep the documentation, like emails, etc., and report this to DOL.  Also worthy of reporting would be the fact that you are not receiving minimum wage from the company for all hours worked.

Then, file for partial unemployment benefits, especially if you were earning substantially more over the past several quarters.  The partial unemployment benefits are calculated according to the average of what was earned in several previous quarters of work.  Then, you receive the difference between what you are actually currently earning and your calculated weekly unemployment benefit.  These benefits may be different in each state.

I learned about these steps after I left the company 2 months ago; wish I had known back then.

It's one of the tricks that companies play on us
so that they can control our productivity, penalize and pay less, despite getting their work done.  The same thing happened to me a year ago, we were asked to follow dossier given by the client, but then a few QAs followed AAMT BOS, etc.  Nevertheless, we were penalized left and right and eventually when we stood up and reported their actions, then it stopped completely.
And the team leaders learned the same tricks
from them. Learned fast not to believe them or trust them, either - they all learned how to talk out of both sides of their mouths.
Any tricks on making your hours when there's no work? sm
If so, please share. Feel free to share tips on making your BILLS, too, when there's no income.

Seriously, do you work off hours to make up the difference?

thanks much.
Resume Tips & Tricks for Seasoned MTs!!!
We should all add these qualities to our resumes.  It's what they expect anymore anyway:

- An outstanding ability to take muddy, garbled jibber-jabber and severely fractured English in 155,000 dilects and turn it into unbelievably beautiful transcription, with no blanks!

- Oh, and don't worry, Mexican, Cuban, Chinese, Japanese, Arabic, Indian, or even rabid auctioneer doctors who speak so fast they could not understand them self on a play back . . .  no problemo!  It doesn't matter, because I am so good if it sounds remotely close with even one syllable barely audible or intelligible I will struggle until I get it.  I do this eagerly because I know you are selling me pride in my work, not a decent wage and because I dread your miserable QA autopsy of my work.

- Will work as hard as a slave for $3 an hour average with a college degree on the most gut-wrenching work you have, and all this without an occasional can of salve for the whip marks on my back.

- Will also fill in hundreds of entries for free on patient information, courtesy copies and researching things like how to spell Waccamaw even if I don't live in South Carolina.  Things  doctors could spell, or dictate clearly but won't because they are too lazy.

- I will also run those dates of service through my magic crystal ball formula to know when the doctor says The patient was seen today, I should look back on the ADT screen and see when he dictated it to know what he means by when it was dictated.  I will do it because you will bonk me on the head and tell me, It's your job to do this for free!

While I am at it, I will run a medical quality assessment through my head to see if it sounds logical and reasonable for all medical sciences and diagnoses.  I will happily verify those medication dosages are correctly dictated because even if the doctor has been to medical school and I haven't . . . I should identify that 325 mg of Coreg will kill someone and correct it!  Again because, It's my job, to run around behind doctors and wipe their butt for free!!!  I'm happy to do that, even if I haven't had the benefit of medical school because . . . . yes, I'm that good baby!!

- And at the end of two or three years of struggling to make a wage above the poverty level learning all this garbage, if you find some foreigner will do my job cheaper to make you more money, don't sweat it!  Just fire me . . . in a conference call with 101 of my coworkers in mass humiliation.  No problem!

Silly wabbit, tricks are for kids!
Really, you haven't been in the MT world long, right?  No problem!  We all have to start sometimes.  Better you get over your naiveity (sp?) sooner than later.
Sadly...no.
Sounds like I may have to go back to the old way and type it all.
Sadly it seems
I think this has been brought up before in previous posts, and correct me/forgive me if I am wrong, but as an IC,you should be able to set your own schedule -- its a catch 22 though, because we have to remember in this business that hospitals NEVER close, therefore, the companies do need weekend coverage and coverage into the wee hours of the morning as well. The main service that I work for just asks their MTs to do a committment of between 400-500 lines on Saturday and Sunday and they offer a weekend bonus as well. For those of you that have children activity committments on the weekends or other things, maybe you could talk to your employer about doing a split shift of sorts. Sorry for the long post
Sadly, you are exactly right.
Time was when a good MT could pretty much write her own ticket. Alas, those days are LONG gone. I'm just hoping to eke out some kind of a living until I can retire.
Sadly, none are the best - still trying to find it myself. nm
x
Sadly yes :( - what info do you need? - nm
sss
You are sadly misinformed. sm
AAMT is certifying OFFSHORE MTs and allowing them to join the organization, thus, the name AMERICAN needs to be removed from the name.  Anyone in this industry who does not understand and acknowledge the negative impacting offshoring has had on our profession has their head in the sand.
Sadly it seems more and more that the better companies...
expect ICs to sign on with the commitment to work a Tues - Sat or Sun - Th. Does that seem flexible to you? Personally I think it's unrealistic to expect a person to want to work either every Sat. or Sun. I couldn't do it if I wanted to. Soccer on Sat. and church on Sun. It's tough.
DEVENTURE IS NOT UNIQUE, SADLY.

I never worked for Deventure.  But, I did apply there.  During the application process, there were red flags that alerted me to the fact that I did not want to work for them.  It seemed to me that they were either extremely disorganized or downright dishonest.  Sadly, I don't think they are unique.  I've had similar experiences with many other companies during my search for the best job, which still has not been found.

But, you know what?  I've also observed that many of these companies totally rely on the fact that they can manipulate MTs to the Nth degree.  What was that word of wisdom that was once spoken by one of my favorite TV psychologists?  You teach people how to treat you.  Never was this as true as it is in the MT work world.  Of course, you can go bankrupt while searching for those who will treat you as a human being and not expect you to perform as a tireless, inhuman robot.

Even if Deventure WINS this case, I praise the lady who is allowing her case to be heard.

I do skip over them because sadly it is the same thing.
Wrong line count and no work. It is just hard because once it gets going it takes over the whole page and it is hard to find anything else someone has posted. I have nothing against TT or its MTs, it just seems like they have some legitimate concerns and they want to be heard. I figured we just must have a lot of TT employees on here and they should be able to discuss things in their own forum.
Not fair, but sadly how most places work
nm
Another thing.. sadly, at 5 cpl, I think I am on the high end of what is being paid.
I cant tell you how many companies with ES offered me like 2-3 cpl..and to that I had to respond GET REAL!!!
With respect, the real irony sadly is

that if you've followed these boards for at least 2 years, you already had an idea of what was going to happen.  Several MTs made an effort here to warn as many as possible about the future loss of jobs.  Many of the posts were ultimately deleted.  I agree there is nothing gained from rehashing the past other than we must learn from it.

QT made a business decision.  They built a company, made a profit, saw more/better/different profit elsewhere, designed a plan to get from point A to point B and moved on - happens every day in the business world.  From all appearances, they did everything right for a while - had they not, there would not be this group of really great MTs struggling to deal with the loss of a job and the stress of starting anew.  QT had an option - they could let their dedicated MTs know what was going to happen and ask them to ride things out as long as possible or they could just squeeze every last drop from each MT and each account.   Too bad for the MTs but, after all, it's only business.  If there were lies, deception, half-truths, etc., this too is a part of the profit/loss bottom line.

The real irony  - and this is public knowledge - is that former QT owners have started new businesses and are bragging far and wide (see internet blogging) about their new employees.

Of course, finding a new scrapbooking job will probably be a little easier than finding and securing a new MT account.

                You think?

I have a prediction (purely for entertainment purposes, of course) - Profits will not sustain the new venture/old lifestyle for very long and that within, oh 24 months or so, there will be a foot dipped into a new MT venture, since the old one was soooo profitable, and old habits are hard to break.

Sadly, most newer computers do not have the 9-pin port.
I have had to buy USB adapter to which some do and do not work correctly with this footpedal. Is this by chance an Escription account? Thus far, this is the only software that I have found which requires such an obsolete port. I bought a laptop assuming it would have the 9-pin port but it did not so I tried at least four adapter until I found one that works.
Sadly, they gave up on quality a long
The original CEO said in a meeting one time that the doctors won't care if a report has a few mistakes in it as long as it is back on time.  That was a big red flag to me.  Apparently it has come to be that way.
Sadly, I make $300 too much to get Food Stamps
I was going to bite the bullet and get them. So obviously I'm overpaid. Time to switch companies.
I agree. Sadly, it is absolutely true, nm
.
Sadly (or not, lol) UP. Gonna make more, gotta
y
Sadly, it is ALL the employees of this one particular account and we have no backup accts.
Apparently, the hospital obviously wants the work first to go to the employees and we get whatever is left, which is slim to none some days. Very frustrating.
Do you feel better now? !! Business is business, most of it should be confidential. Why post on a
x
Trying to build his business? He's been in business over 15 years!!!!!! sm
I also had a hard time, nearly impossible actually, getting paid. The owner does this on the side; he is very involved with other things.
If you don't know what is confidential, you have no business being in any business.
This is confidential information and should not be divulged. It is one of the biggest problems a co can have. If you have to ask...well I won't be able to explain it to you
Are they still in business?
Were you currently working for him?
It's really none of my business because I
don't work for MQ, but it looks to me like they need some kind of formal verfication for whatever reason that you received the letter. Perhaps to prevent any future actions on your part by stating you already had received notification in the form of a letter? Do you know if the phone call was recorded or not? Maybe I'm just being paranoid, but this sounds so awfully underhanded and sneaky to me.
It is none of their business (sm)

and there are certain questions they are not supposed to ask employees.  What other ways can they invade your privacy?  I would look elsewhere.

OSi has not been in business for 10 yrs. Who are you trying to
xxxxx
This is about all she does to run a business.

Business 101 sm
You are supposed to have a budget set up for payroll and taxes ahead of time. Every other week is the norm in regular business. Companies penalizing ICs or employees because they have lousy contract terms with an account is unethical.
This business. sm

Duh!  I guess I don't.  Just supported 2 children all by myself until they left for college with my MT wages.  Nope, sure don't know anything about this business which has kept me employed for 25 years.

I don't have to know what Andrews is, I learned the right way - on the job.

Ya know, I have been in the business as
long as you have and worked in every aspect of MT including management and the slackers do exist, but they exist from any country. That's just an excuse for outsourcing or low pay. If you have slackers, get rid of them and leave the ones who work hard alone, but pay them a decent wage.

This kind of bull just literally makes me ill to read and it justifies nothing.
business

Just wanting some opinions about what people think of companies that have been around for 5 years and how to weigh the pros and cons to leave a company if the one that has been around less would pay better?  thanx!

I own my own business
big mouthed fool! Go back to bed!
Is JLG still in business or have they gone under, too? nm
s
Bad business
Yes!  I agree.  I tested today for another job and accepted something else part-time. As soon as am sure about the new job I am washing my hands of this GA company for good.
That is really nobody's business.

If the girl has transcribed errors more than likely from my experience it is due to POOR TRAINING on (OP) or Rad MT's part.  If she was such a good trainer or whatever, the girl wouldn't be making errors!  Sorry, but sometimes ya' gotta' step back jack and look in the mirror!  There's plenty of companies looking for radiology MTs.  Furthermore, the girl probably never got a bad vibe from (OP) Rad MT OR SHE WOULDN'T BE ASKING HER FOR A JOB REFERENCE ya' think?????

ITA. Not sure how they are still in business. nm

Should go out of business
Hopefully, they will not stay in business long. I had a friend who worked for them and just resigned. They are HORRIBLE! They are a disgrace to our profession.
Probably 99.9% of them. We are in a 24/7 business. nm
x
Unfortunately they are still in business
Talked with someone I know who actually still works for them... the person said she was busy, but struggling getting paid again.  Did my own research, found they are doing advertising in Canada.  May have to go off shore soon to get an MT that will be willing to type for them.  Pretty sure the investigation by the State of PA is still going on.  They are not out of the woods yet.  Just hate to see anyone get caught up with them.  The care nothing about their MT's.  Not too sure who and who not has not been paid yet.
Are they still in business?
I say enthusiast because they have been a hot topic that keeps me interested locally and nationally on what they do next...In that regard, I notice their web page is paid for up to 2009 but apparently has been under construction or not found depending on the page you try to enter on.

I also know that all of their ads on various sites are still up, but they would not bother to pull them anyway - making me very curious- does anyone still work for them - did the tax man, labor board, and lawsuits finally catch up and put them under.

Would over to know - I could use a reason to celebrate.
It should be none of their business
I think a person's credit report should have nothing to do with a job in this industry.  Just another excuse they use to kick you when you're down!  If your current job is not paying your bills, isn't the smartest thing to do to look for a better job?  Penalizing you for that is ridiculous and unfair!
Bad Business
You know, I applied to a position right here on this board, took the test, and just got turned down.  I know I did a great job.  It was the easiest stuff I have ever transcribed.  For some reason, the recruiter wrote to me and said my test did not warrant the type of Transcriptionist they were looking for.  It makes me sick.  I currently work for 2 other places and do over 60,000 lines per month, with rarely a remark from QA.  I have over 28 years' experience and am a dedicated and hard worker.  I actually am in a foreclosure situation and am willing to put the time in for 3 full time jobs.  I will find the right third company, but what a shot that was!!!  I work 7 days a week and know I can fulfill them all with at least 12000 lines each per pay period, 2 weeks.  What do you think?  Just trying to save my house!!!!
bad business
I don't think so!!!  I know what you mean though.  I recently worked for a big company and they abided by BOS unbelievably so.  Hey, I can appreciate that and I learned a lot and follow every bit of feeback I get.  I love it actually.  I think it is just a case of false advertising really!!!
If you have been in this business a while you know

it is feast or famine.  The company can't give you work they don't have.  My company had clinic and acute care accounts.  Unless there is work leftover from yesterday there will be little work today and even less tomorrow if the clinic MTs work weekends.  My company pays holiday pay.  You could take PTO if no holiday pay, or you could anticipate the holiday and the lack of work and work extra when there is work.

I do acute care work and we're on OT, even this week, though by Sunday and Monday it might be a little slow.

I can understand your frustration though.
