That's advice I give people and, to a person, SM

Posted By: Sally Forth on 2009-09-07
In Reply to: I would recommend against it (sm) - Another old timer

they say others have told them the same thing. The only way to get a job is take a remote MT course, which costs a fortune. Money poorly spent.

I can emphasize with young mothers who want to stay home with their children. I really can, because that's what I did. There simply is no future in this. I too am holding on until retirement in a few years. Five to be exact.

And these schools continue to tell people there is a future in MT. There isn't.

Advice: Go over your lead. Go to the next person up. There is work there. sm
I would call the office and talk to Karyn or Becky. Your lead might not be conveying the message for some reason. Sometimes they are too busy, sometimes they don't want to share someone. Just call. That's the only way to make it happen, and you will be glad you did!
Get an accountant - best advice I can give you. nm

Maybe the best advice your lawyer can give

is to leave well enough alone when these threads start.  I have personally witnessed your responses on countless threads on more than just one board, and I am always amazed at how you just don't understand you hurt yourself more than any posting of =rumors= about your company.  You say we don't know how you run your business.  Well, we know a lot more about it now with your post than we did before, don't we?  (psst, so do your competetors)  Is that necessarily a good thing?  I don't see the CEO of Medquist running around on here trying to imply legal ramifications or trying to help us understand that company's way of conducting business.  In 1997 I quit a company where the owner sent out a memo telling employees not to discuss it on the internet.  It amazes me that an owner believes s/he has the kind of control over anyone to regulate what the people who work for them think or do OR feel intimidated that your lawyer is going into the Big Brother Business.

For the record, I have never looked into working for your company, am not a former employee/contractor, have no interest in doing any sort of business with you whatsoever.  The reason I mention this is because I have mentioned this to you in the past and it continues to fall on deaf ears.  You do more harm by what you say than any of the MTs, editors, students, curious onlookers, do here.  If you try to hold your head up high and let things be, the reputation of your company could possibly benefit, but then, I don't control what you say, think, feel or do, either.

When I recently contacted a lawyer who represents outsourcing employers about what I thought was a rather intrusive employee handbook with strict verbage about talking about that company in public and even in private email, her response to me was to sign it.  She reminded me that it didn't change what I thought, but employers don't like employees/contractors bad mouthing them, and then asked me why I felt it was a big deal.  So now I'm going to offer you to think about that from your side.  Employees/contractors don't like employers bad mouthing them, and by the way, why is it a big deal for you?  Tend to your business and let go of what you can't control.

my 2 cents for what it is worth

Best advice I can give is talk with your accountant. sm
If you don't have one, seek one out. They would be the best source of reliable tax information.
Easy to give that advice if you are an MT no longer working!
Stand up for ourselves?  Are you still working as an MT? Have you checked the other job markets lately?  Are you clueless?  Stand up for ourselves and there are up-teen people waiting in line behind us to take our jobs for less money!!  I think your opinion is a little cold and sounds exactly like someone who does not need a job or the money!  Save it.
What the heck .. give this person

a break .. years ago when I worked for MQ I came from a company where QA were called editors .. and in many places QA are still called editors.  Why in heaven's name would you argue a moot point.  Call it what you will .. she had a question and you are beating the semantics to death.

To curious I would say consult a lawyer and see how you can proceed.  I have paid people in my company retroactively for things I have overlooked .. it is good will and probably in their policies and not a really huge deal.  They may not want to admit holding you up .. but hey .. go for it!!

Please give me the initials of the person
you talked to so that we can straighten this out on this end. This is NOT acceptable and we will take care of it.
Can you give me initials of this person
I think that would answer the question for me. My company has work so do not know if this is a case of robbing Peter to pay Paul.
I would be very thankful to the person who would give me...sm
names of companies which do only or mostly VR, possible with their own Expanders that is trained to MTs. Till now I am using my mouse.
I am good at it, but want to get better. I am 30% to 40% faster doing VR than straight.
Thank you.
MDI people - a bit of advice

Call me paranoid, but it is for good reason.

You will get contracts or agreements to sign.  Read them VERY carefully and if anything is wrong, make sure it is changed before you sign and submit it.   Do not let them tell you that something is implied because as soon as it is sent in, they will forget that phrase.  Make sure you initial every single page of these agreements and keep a copy for yourself.  HR is a total mess and things really get messed up there from day one.  Check and double check your every pay check.  Those are even worse.   Be persistent because they do not like to answer e-mails nor make corrections.

If you need an answer from anyone for any reason, make sure you get it in writing - that includes your managers or leads, and co workers.   Things have a way of changing to suit their needs, and conversations can get very twisted very easily.  Best advice is not to talk to them about anything other than the weather, discuss everything else in writing.  Remember that anything that is said to anyone will probably go straight up to the top of the company within 2 days.

Well, give a call to the person who hired you and
negotiate a higher line rate. You should have not problem since you already started and they know what kind of work you can do.
Can you give me a name of a current person to contact to speak with.
:
this person needs to give some specifics, Or not be believed. Nuff said.

Debbie Hood is the HR person -- give her a call. nm

If you want to know the real scoop, always better to just ask.  Someone might pay me $20 a report (okay, in my dreams) and someone else something else.   I understand when people come here and want to know things a recruiter or HR person cannot or will not tell you, such as quality and quantity of dictation and dictators, reliability of being paid on time and such.  But if you want to know specifics of how much per report/line, what kind of bennies, direct deposit or no, etc ... why not just write an email or pick up the phone and ASK?

This is not meant to be rude or anything.  I just am curious.  When I signed on with a company, I saw posts saying 10 cpl was the ceiling and a bunch of other user-specific information that had nothing to do with what I was offered.  I made 11-1/2 cpl AND they paid my long distance.  A lot has to do with bargaining skills and what you have to offer.

JMO.

benefits, pay, type of people????? any one have any thoughts/advice?

Can anyone from the Ohio MQ office give me a contact person and a phone number to call so I can talk
to someone there without getting a lot of other people involved before I find out what kind of accounts they have to offer. I am interested in transferring from my current office but would like to speak with someone up there first. Even an email address of someone would help.
Great advice. Is people stop working for them, maybe they will start paying attention. I wonder if .
their clients know they do not pay their MTs to do the work. You can bet that Rapid Transcript is getting paid by the client. What a ripoff. Just the fact that they have an F rating by the BBB woudl be enough of a turn-off for me. Crappy business practices.
I think it's one person (loosely) who thrives on ticking people off, seen her before.
/
I think if they also give them to people
who don't say anything - if you aren't complaining and you're doing a good job on the ESLs, why not send you more and more?  Just my opinion - maybe if you make a complaint they will change it.  I used to work on a really hard ESL account and I know how aggravated you must be right now.
C'mon people, you get what you give!!

If you give half wages for full editing of very few clear dictators on a slow VR platform with no expander, bad sound quality, and technical problems, what kind of MTs do you think you'll get? Experienced, high producers?

I am sure there are 40,000 non-MQ people too, give us a break

OMG - give it a rest. Some people have to
complain about EVERYTHING even when there is nothing anyone can do about it. The LAW says they have until Feb. 2nd so stop complaining.
Give me a break. Obviously he/she was joking or they would not have put that in there. You people
are ridiculous, always looking for fault on something someone says. I'm not the OP but I also promise people that I won't come here because if I read something untrue about the company I work so hard for, I get upset.

It's like reading the National Enquirer. 99% gossip, 1% truth, but for that 1% truth and the daily laughs, it is worth coming to read.
OK, if this is your co policy, then tell the people who give notice. You
cost them money if they have no job so if they are professional and give you what normally is a 2-week notice (considered to be professional), then you should let them know that. Tell them no notice is needed if you need to quit...put it on paper.
okay give it up people OSI is not the only place on earth
:-(
Metro in Georgia is one. Give them a call. Great people. nm

Give it some time. I think some people aren't working today and the ice

I try to be kind and give people the benefit of the doubt, but I have to agree. sm

It all sounds like a bunch of hooey.  My ex husband used to tell lies when the truth would have worked better.  Perhaps she is related to him.

I cannot believe any MT would not know at least the most important aspects of the BOS.  True, with some accounts, you ignore the BOS and do it however the client wants it, but still, you should KNOW the rules.

Maybe I'll just put out a shingle and call myself a lawyer.  Of course, I know nothing about the law ... but maybe that shouldn't be a problem.

Give them a call. So many people switching companies all the HR depts must be really busy. nm
.

Good advice, and advice that I'm giving real thought to ...

If I had known that they offshored before I accepted employment with them I never would have gone there to work.  I've been here long enough now though to not want to lose my benefits.

Still ... making a DECENT PAYCHECK and making a living without being stressed out over the type of work that I'm doing is just as important as good benefits.

I think it is one person. I had a few print outs from a few weeks ago and this person even capital
I have had a positive one. I have been with Keystrokes for 3 months and am very happy.

I printed them to show my manager but she told me that there are few bitter people out there and no one can do anything about them. My manager said that everyone can tell that it is the same few over and over again, for Keystrokes and a few other companies as well. Time to move on Ms. Anon. I cannot think why a company would go through the trouble of getting IDs and getting you installed just to ignore you after that. Doesn't make sense, does it? Are you sure that't the whole truth? You keep saying truth but it sounds fishy.
Exactly what I'm talking about RUDE! You are a very unhappy person. A happy person does not
respond in such a way!  This is the reason SS has such a bad name.
I am not a hateful person but that person screamed at me for 45 minutes. sm
She said all transcriptionists are idiots.
"warned" by someone who won't give facts or sign her name. Give me a break! nm

They used to give out $25 Amex cheques -- give them time. :-) nm

People at TT have been paid! People who haven't well, maybe you did not make count and your check
after insurance deduction. Maybe your bank is holding it. Maybe anything! But we GOT PAID. This is NO LIE. And I am sick of this board. Nothing but disgruntled exemployees arguing with employees who like their job. Ugggg. I am working. BTW: THERE IS WORK (clears throat) remember that? Work?
Keystrokes is wonderful!! They are the nicest people and care 150% about their people!!
Excellent company!!!!
I worked for SS and some people were very RUDE and I am talking about the editing people in some
instances.  It ALL depends on the person, as it does with any company.  They paid on time and the lady over me was very nice, but boy the person in QA was mean to EVERYONE!!  Never seen anything like it before.
I get what you are all saying about them not having to give give you work, but...
I guess I just figure that as an IC, I am basically my own business and it is my responsibility to make sure that the work is done when it should be. I just think that if the standard of the company is 24 hour TAT then that is what I am agreeing to do when they hire me. There are advantages for both of us to the IC senerio, they do not have to pay benefits, or take care of collecting and reporting the taxes, and I have to adhear to the 24 hour TAT (or what every thier standards are) but can do that during hours that are convenient to me. Of course it is better for the company if they know exactly when I am going to be sitting at my desk and typing that is why they have the option of hiring employees. Just my opinion and wanting things to be like they used to be.. I guess I have to get out of my time warp or look a little harder for a company who really knows what IC status means.
Are people trying to scare people or just tell them what is happening. I am not scared just seeing
that things are changing very rapidly and not for the better for me. If I have no work and need multiple accounts everyone else is in the same boat now arent they that have my accounts. That is how people know what is going on.
Maybe due to the people that manage Amherst. I think MQ would be a lot better off finding new people
up there with all the problems you hear about that office. Seems like something is very very wrong there.
I doubt it. There are more happy people than unhappy people sm
at Medquist. I've checked out other companies but I liked MQ the best (I kept working at MQ while testing other companies).
SO right! People who get paid to bring people on-board -sm
to these companies (few, if any, are 100% honest, it seems), are going to be honest and tell you anything that isn't rosy and sugar-coated. Having a good prospective MT walk because the company isn't so great means less green dollars in their bank account every month. They're not going to tell us anything that DOESN'T make them more money.
More people will come into VR because the qualifcations to do MT are not the same. Lots of people w
to work at home. It's all relative to what you are used to. The nationals are counting on this. I think MTs will work cheaper rather than reenter the work force with no other skills than MT. The nationals are counting on this.
They named people's names. That is not right. People just sm

need to keep from naming names.  I thought it was an informative bit of information, but when you name names, then posts are way out of line.

I would really like to see a truly professional way of talking about a company.  I don't care what board you go to, somehow people just do not want to play nice when it comes to talking about people.  If those people could learn to be a little more professional and stop posting names to their wrath or anger, then that will be the day I can say I am proud to be in this profession.  When I see those types of things, it makes my skin crawl.  If it were me being talked about, I would be livid.  I certainly understand why the posts were deleted.

Thank you for saying that. Most people here just love to trash people.
It is against board rules though.
Heartland - we take care of our people people
I meant in quotation marks, not parentheses.
For people at MDI-MD that say they are out of work, I see they are hiring now. Are people still
running out of work or did they get more accounts.  I am interested in this company.
Honestly, people some people are lazy...
plain and simple, sad but true.
bit of advice - sm
I have worked in many hospitals over many years, and after a bit of trial and error, I have found that this approach has always worked in my favor -

I STOPPED sending resumes to HR departments. Why? Because I would inevitably end up with a computer generated letter "thanking me for the resume ... on file ... should a position come up ... blah blah blah." I would contact the hospital and say I am responding to the position that is open, what do you mean you don't have a position??? The response would be "Oh, well someone should get in contact with you soon then."

By the time an HR department got off their butt to start calling in people for the position, chances are the transcription department was into overtime and overtime meant loss of $$ and next thing you know, it was being outsourced.

So I cut out the HR department, and would find out the name of the head of medical records and send my resume to that person. The person would either go to HR and say "contact this person for an interview" or would contact me themselves and set up the interview.

I would even send a resume to the head of medical records even if there was no opening because you never know. Hospitals may have onsite transcriptionists as well as outsourcing. But if the hospital realizes that there is the possibility of another Transcriptionist right in the area, they may be able to utilize me. Hence, I would get a phone call.

It's just a bit of advice - don't always rely on the website for transcription positions.
