This is totally off topic, but your post made me smile with the reference to Wang sm

word processors.  I remember when we got them at the hospital, I was all happy while some of the older ladies were balking at it, but the thing that sticks in my mind was a comedian at the time who did some kind of joke about, Who let some company call themselves Wang?

Anyway, it was funny at the time and this brought back a memory . I'm sorry for your situation.  I am 50 too, and although I do not live in a rural area, in fact just recently moved to the Denver area, I feel rather trapped.  I have done this since I was a junior in high school, and I really do not have any other marketable job skills.  When I see posts about wages being cut and work drying up, I panic inside and wonder what the future will hold for me.  Even if I had the money to go back to school, by the time I would graduate, I'd be an old lady anyway and probably not the best candidate for hire.

Good luck to you.

Smile or not, your post was still incorrect
nm
My post was in reference to Transcend....sm
Know nothing about Cymed, so I'll take your word for it, but am *quite* happy at Transcend. You should try it!
Oh my goodness! Wang word processors! sm
totally forgot about those. We thought we had died and gone to heaven when those hit the office!

Yes there was good money in this business and you could support yourself come-what-may! But, it is getting harder and harder and harder.

Schools promise too much, reel people in hook-line and sinker. Then they have all this money into education, what else are they suppose to do?k I do feel very badly for the newbies (I hate that word) but what else do you call them?

I remember a time when I would recommend this profession to anyone. Now I don't recommend it to anyone at all. Matter of fact, I do everything I can to discourage it.
I absolutely loved the Wang and the line counts
were way up there. Once you got the hang of it, just easy as pie.
You almost made it through the post..
Okay, you almost made it through the post and you were being positive and encouraging until you got to the part about there are a lot of people who think they can transcribe and cannot...

Just because someone had a bad experience with your company does not mean they are a substandard transcriptionist. Their pay is low for the industry and the incentive plan makes no sense. I left because I don't believe in what is happening in Trinidad. I was always able to transcribe enough lines and always had a 99%+ QA score.
Your post just made my day! n/msg
;D
I totally agree with this post
they used to be a great company to work for, but have gone downhill a lot in the past year or so. Same is true about the not replying to emails, but expecting IMs and emails sent to you to be answered asap. Pay was always correct and on time too.
I totally agree with this post.
I have 20 years transcribing in a hospital and now at home as an IC.  I can tell you right now even with this kind of experience being able transcribe anything, you will only get offered 8.5 cpl if you are lucky.  I've even been offered 7 cpl, which I was totally offended and did not take the job.  I think you're better off trying something part-time to fill the time because you won't find a company out there willing to pay what you call top pay for a top transcriptionist.  I can say in my experience the highest bid I got so far from a national is 9 cpl and I haven't applied to many.  You, on the other hand, may want to try a smaller MTSO that needs part-time or even p.r.n. transcriptionists that can hit the ground running.
I totally agree with your post.

So, it's not like there are no offers, just terrible offers.  This business doesn't pay what it used to especially with the MTSOs that are online lookig for ICs or employees.  I haven't seen a job ad yet that is paying more than 9 cpl unless it's a teaching hospital loaded with ESL, which I can do, but why rack my brain when I can make more lines per hour doing clinic with no ESL.  It's a shame, but we must be choosy at this point in the game.  I agree that there are companies out there paying the same wage, hire employees, and give benefits, which is great, but not all of us can work a set schedule for whatever reason, truth be told.  No one should knock that.  If you are in a situation where you can physically sit for 8 hours, good for you, but me I'm only 38 and I just can't do it anymore after working on-site for 17 years, pounding the keys, I just don't have the stamina.  So, I prefer IC work that is truly IC and I work my own hours even if that means getting up to stretch every 15 minutes.  I still make a great living and fortunate in that I don't need the health benefits right now; not to say that couldn't change in the future.

In all fairness, this profession should allow more stretch time and less pound the keys for 8-10 hours and they may find more MTs wanting to be an employee.  An IC means you make your own schedule, nothing wrong with that.

Above post was made by me, not QTme, sorry.

I think this is the 3rd post you've made sm
about this.  If you only had 8 days into this job, just let it go and move on.  You sound hysterical.
Your post made me laugh, then cry.
Shift differential does not exist at Acusis. Weekend differentials were calibrated in the same way wages were. In order to get a weekend differential, you have to work and achieve your line count on both Saturday and Sunday...so if you've got a Sunday thru Thursday schedule, you're out of luck. Tuesday thru Saturday? Screw you. Plus, with a lot of 'files not available' (no jobs), at least the last Saturday of every pay period has everybody on line trying to squeeze out a few lines...which means that Saturday and Sunday you're not going to get your line count, which means even if you threw family life out the window and chained yourself to your desk, you're still not going to get the weekend differential. If you ever decide to 'share the wealth' and drop your company name, please feel free to let me know. 25+ years of transcription has got to be worth better treatment that I'm getting now.
You totally missed the point of my post.
You just restated my point. The above poster is lucky that she started at 0.095 cpl. That has not been my experience. But I am thrilled to be working at 7 cpl. As I stated before, even at 7 cpl, I make more money than I ever did at any other job. I currently making over $17 an hour at 7 cpl and my pay keeps increasing each month as I get better on my account, so I am not complaining. No need to get down on me when you clearly misunderstood my post.
Whoa, you TOTALLY misunderstood my post
Calm DOWN! I meant to ask your company only allows you to type 1200 lines a day? I would never do what you're accusing me of. Slow down and consider that before you blow your top like that. I was sympathizing with you, not trying to tear you down. Geeze!
A post was made asking for opinions. I replied. sm

Part of the reason I replied was because I did go to management, several times in fact, and either there were no replies whatsoever or the replies were in disagreement with others in management, leaving me wondering which one was correct, or they were replies to simply pacify with no intention of correcting.  I'm not trying to flame the company. If my experience seems like a flame, it is because there is a problem and exposing it is like exposing dirty laundry, I guess.  It isn't meant to dissuade anyone or persuade any else for that matter.  It is simply MY experience.  Like I said before, I am not a disgruntled employee.  I am merely experiencing some things in the company that differ from what others are going through and I am simply expressing my experiences on this forum because of what I stated before about intimidation coming from management on the internal forum.

You are absolutely right that there are many, many employees of Transcend that are extremely happy.  I'm not among the ones who have flamed anyone for posting postive experiences. I have/had been one of those happy employees for years.  There are also many that have been so fed up they have quit. There are also current employees who are in my situation as well, but are afraid to talk about it.  At this point in time, I fall in the middle grouping.  I'm not saying it's a bad company to work for.  Again, I am merely expressing my experience, and has been said many, many times before, I'm quite confident that people on this board have the ability to know what is best for them in a company and aren't going to let the posting of a few happy cheerleaders or a few disgruntled ex-employees be the basis for the decision what company to choose or not to choose.

All I am saying is that if you are the poster who feels that he/she can work whenever simply because it is inconvenient to work the shift you had committed to, please don't assume that I hadn't talked to management about MY issues and try to point the finger and make accusations about MY motives.  This board is about the pros and the cons.  Unfortunately for me, my circumstance falls in the latter grouping and I shouldn't be lumped into a group of people flaming or bashing and told it is unfair for me to speak about my experience when I have tried all other internal avenues to no avail.  If my experience seems like flaming the company, there would be no flame if there was no ember to fan, so I should have that accusation pointed at me simply because I discuss it?? That is what's not fair, and since I did say I didn't want to argue, I'm not going to keep the discussion going with banter that gets heated or flamed to the point the whole string gets deleted.  Thanks for your input and have a nice day.

I can't stress enough how degrading it is for any MTSO to post foul language in a job ad post along with making references that people should know what the **** they are doing.  Our industry has been demoralized enough without our own MTSOs posting in this manner.

AMEN!!! The OP is DEFINITELY a post made by someone in management at SPI!
No SPI employee would ever say those things about that crappy company! They treat MTs like second-class citizens and rip them off to no end! I also worked for Cymed for about 2 years before SPI bought them out. A few months after the buyout was announced, I got out of there as fast as I could. The original poster is obviously either management or just an employee who needs a good, HARD kick in the noggin!
Hey, QA, I made another mistake .. pull my post .. LOL
Pardon the html in my post, as I tried to enter smileys ... lol ... there was no way to proofread ~ and I didn't anyway, because it's time for me to get ready for work. I also said not being turned down ~ should have been no not .. LOL .. toodles ~ I'm outta here and not participating anymore. ;o)
Geesh..It's been a long day. I don't think I made any sense on that post.
Bottom line is, best pay rate out there, most of the time enough work and good benefits. They have a lot of happy employees.
The post was made on a Sunday night -- no one in the office really to ask then. sm
And it seemed a harmless question.   He/she wasn't really asking a policy question ... just a general question regarding when the payday is.  Most companies that I have worked for, if the payday is over a weekend, they pay on Friday.  Unfortunately, that is not the case here, but at least they are upfront about it, and it says so in the paperwork somewhere.
You are correct. I totally read the original post wrong but
I had a long day, but that does not change the fact that the Allstate ad IS appalling. :(
Please everyone, read the post made by Tammy Johson above. It explains everything.

What a hateful post. Hope your rant made you feel better. nm

smile
Also, please don ot change you thoughts 10 diffrent ways and then say to me forget it I will come back to this later and expect me to be okay with that.  And one other thing - SPIT OUT THE GUM
Smile.
:)
Of course you stick it out with a smile. Really. That's what I would do. sm
Remember, she probably won't last long and then you one day may have her job. Don't let one person out of other really good ones spoil your new position. If it continues longer than a month or so, go above her head and speak your concerns. She's probably just testing you. You know if you are doing a good job or not, and if you KNOW you are doing a good job, then just take her comments with a grain of salt and continue working. Don't make a huge deal out of QA people who are rude. I swear, if I did that, I would have had over 50 jobs by now! Each and every single company I've worked for (3) have had at least one Grinch of a QA person and at first I would get all upset and then I grew up and realized that they are just grinches and the kind of people who probably really, really dislike themselves, so how can they like anyone else????

Smile People!
What's with all the negativity on this board today?  Everyone needs to take a breath.  I've never seen such hostility on here before. Smile...it really isn't that bad.
I wasn't trying to be a smarta$$, that is why I put the smile at the end..
Sorry if you took it that way :)
Smile. Nope. I'm in this because I'm too lazy SM
and self indulgent to be management. Also really hate workplace politics. Been there long ago in another industry, done it, moved on. Isolated in the boonies now and loving the no-stress/no responsibility work we do. Haven't traded a word with my account manager (what's that title, anyway?) in months. Intend to keep on as long as allowed.
A few corrections? Must be short reports. You are lucky! Thanks for the smile/laugh! nm
nm
Yes, it's totally word based, but it's also totally slow.
I haven't had a very good experience using dictaphone EXText. I wouldn't recommend anyone work on this platform. I don't know how anyone can say this is a very productive platform in any way whatsoever. Actually, it is the worst I've ever worked on. I like Bayscribe, DocQscribe, and many others over this setup.
topic
why do some people on this board think their opinion is the only right one?  what is the purpose of this board if not to share information?
Reference regarding

business practices -- I was not referring to one company specifically.  From reading the board, there are messages regarding existing insurance coverage suddenly being unavailable.  Others have posted regarding to unpaid training time, which I believe under employee status is unlawful.  If the shoe fits.  One cannot sign away one's legal rights, no matter what kind of wording they put in a contract.  I would say dropping existing insurance coverage and then stringing people along regardig that amounts to fraud.

Reference
Has anybody ever requested a copy of a work reference?  I would just like to know if I can get a copy of mine.  Thanks.
I think it is actually to let you know it is a HOT topic. nm
.
Probably Off Topic but
I can't resist saying it....if the years hadn't caught up with me I would get into law enforcement and work to become a detective.  LOL  Seriously I would pursue a degree in criminal justice.  I do believe THOSE are jobs that will never be outsourced.  I made a good...well....great income as an MT during my working years but unfortunately I fear that is not an option for MTs these days.
reference this.
nm
A well deserved topic
I am glad you started it, as an ex-employee this was well deserved, now we just need to keep all informed of this problem on a regular basis. I do believe she will pay her dues in time, you are right, what goes around comes around.
YW. Sometimes I can't get my topic to come up on search, either. :) nm

Reference Books?
How much are you asking and what do you have? I need a cardiology ref book for sure! Also in need of ophthalmology ref book. Please let me know. Thanks!
Good reference here
You're absolutely right, this board is a good place not only to vent, but to get the scoop on the companies out there. Sure some people are just going to be venting on here cause they got fired or couldn't make it but if you weed through those you can pretty much get the idea on others. This is a great resource.
Reference Books
I am starting with Trans Tech the first part of September.  I used to do transcription in a hospital, but have been out of it for a few years.  I have never worked at home before.  What kind of reference materials do most of you have at your desk?  Do you have mostly books, or online references?
Never accused you of anything. The topic was on
week during recruiter discussions, and postings below (don't know which one you are or who you are nor do I care) reminded me that I had been meaning to post on this.  You seem very defensive for a post that was completely not specifically directed at you. It was a generalization statement, and I mentioned recruiters who were well known and whose names I would not mention. Maybe you are one of those. Either way, no personal offense intended.  I read your post briefly and don't have time to refer to it again, but if you aren't involved in a company and have no interest, I still find that odd to be referring that company to someone you don't even know.  If MTs care about a company, its never made sense to me that someone would then so eagerly refer a complete stranger to your company - how do you know if they can spell C-A-T? Just very odd to me, though perhaps their intentions are pure and good.  I used to believe everyone on these boards literally, and thus my post was aimed, as I am sure I clearly stated, for those naive posters, like my old self. I used to be so touched and emotional, thinking someone actually cared enough about me to help me find a job, only to find the situations exactly as I described. Just my experience and just my 2 cents.  I also found so many MTs who I thought were so kind, only to be slipped at the last minute the line of oh, by the way, be sure to mention my name to the recruiter, so I can get my referral bonus.  Yuck. If these same MTs had been open with this from the start of our email exchanges, or post exchanges, the effect would not have disgusted me. But to act like a friend, a caring fellow MT, only to then hear the old referral part, just made it insincere, which it always was.  Again, you are taking this too personal, but that's your issue, not mine.
They mean it's a "hot" topic - once which
nm
For future reference...
I have found in my years that most places are far less concerned with format than content, in the belief that format could be individual based on client needs and any formatting errors could be quickly corrected in your first few days under the watchful eye of QC. That said, as a QC myself, I see many more errors related to content than I do of format once an MT has hit about a month on any account.

Good luck with your job search.
The topic is about "Layoff" - sm
*** Disclaimer: I'm NOT an attorney; therefore, cannot give any legal advice. These are just my opinions. Please do your own research and form your own opinions. ***

The topic under this thread is about Layoff.

It is my belief that in California, the at will employment defense is defeated by a termination in violation of public policy.
If the employer used the term Layoff to terminate an MT, I'm assuming it knows what it did because employer simply cannot find a sneaky way out and use the word Layoff for an illegal and wrongful termination, like those National companies that lay off MTs, turn around and give ads starting the same day at the rate of t.i.w. about new accounts and needing new MTs. Using common sense, if they are hiring new MTs for new accounts, there never was a lack of work to justify a layoff. The employers are entitled to their ostrichy-thinking, but that does not mean that they can get away with their illegal activities of terminating an MT without compensating the MT with probably back pay and front pay just because they feel like it just because the MT knows more about transcription than the manager of transcription does, in which case, the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009 might apply, not to mention, in such a case scenario, the terminated MT can bump the manager of transcription for her job if he/she does not have as much seniority at the company as the MT does.

Good luck!

Probably just a reference to a generic
red-dot-head. Could be Shavinder, Rajah, Bopinder, Rajinder, they all seem to be 'inders'.
Let's take tomorrow off! While the topic is hot!!
I need a day off.
Well for future reference....
I would have the line counting program in place BEFORE I even gave my start date or whatever.  Of course, if you were having so many personal or family issues that you couldn't even send an invoice, then you can't be outraged that you got cheated out of lines.  Companies have certain deadlines as well and they aren't able to wait around and figure out how to get your programs up and running.  I'm not sure what kind of company you worked for, but if it were ME, and of course it isn't, but I would have INITIALLY in the BEGINNING told them I was having an issue with a line counting software and ask what they SUGGEST I use that may be in comparison to what their other MTs use.  IF they were rude, as you suggested, then I would have just not started working for them.  But, to work, not able to count lines, not able to send an invoice in, the whole mess seems very disorganized, so you shouldn't be shocked that you didn't get paid.  LESSON LEARNED.
