Unions haven't helped much in years

Sadly, they've become more of a corporation themselves. You pay dues and if a conpany wants to bail or relocate or outsource, they still can and do.

Unions exist to make money for unions.
That's the truth. They don't care if companies close because they can't afford to pay union wages, and then the workers have nothing.
Unions are on the side of the Unions!
You have a very glorified view of unions. For many years, unions have been associated with graft, corruption, and greed, and for good reason. The unions are in business for the unions, period. Unions will twist the truth to whatever extent necessary to pit workers against management. That is how they stay in business. Have you ever seen info about the salaries that union bosses make? They are atrocious. Unions are a BUSINESS. They are in business for themselves. They are NOT charitable organizations out to help workers, although that is what they say. They will only help the worker to the extent that it lines their pockets.
Haven't heard of them in my 25 years as an MT.
Try a Google search and see what you come up with.
What incentive pay? In 5 years I haven't gotten
anything for holidays and have worked most of them.
I got one too and haven't worked for them for two years-thanks. lol nm
nm
I haven't missed any in 8 years.
It won't help the short check situation, happens in every company - just an error you have to have corrected with another check/deposit.

LOL, I haven't thought of that in years!
xxxx
I think they're new. Haven't heard of them in all my years of doing MT. nm

If you have worked for us for two years and haven't gotten a raise or a bonus....
you need to contact Liz, as she states. We have many bonuses for weekends (when busy) and we also pay LD. If you are not getting long distance paid - speak to Liz. If you are a true employee, and not just getting on the bashing bandwagon, then Liz can help you.
Haven't found a great place yet . . ., was with last company three years.
Just new this internet thing.
I've been working weekends for 7 years and haven't heard of this.

Thanks! This helped me a lot....nm

Yep, me too. Nothing I did helped either. nm

Thanks! This helped a bunch. I know have my
questions answered.
thanks, you have helped me with my decision

I do too, and they helped me recently
when I had a low-virtual memory problem and I wasn't savvy enough to know what to do. Busy as they are, they didn't make me feel stupid for needing help with it.
Forum helped with my decision about OSI
OSI didn't tell me they outsource jobs to India in their job offer, and I refuse to work for a company that does this.

Thanks to this forum, I learned about this and chose to go with a company that does not outsource. I ignore some of the inane comments, but to do nothing but praise a company here is unrealistic. I read all the proof I needed to help me make a decision.

Why would it be so difficult to simply remove crazy things like, "Oh, you are nuts if you work for them," and leave comments such as, "I have had no work on this account for one week," and she soon learned on this forum that it was because the jobs were sent to India. I don't know why you believe it is necessary to remove the entire string.

Thank you.
Thanks for OTI input. Helped alot.
Appreciate it.  Sounds good to me other than that program problem.  They should use word 2000 and be done with it.
Thanks.. Helped a ton. I have already been through that. No work yet they are always hiring. That is
ridiculous..
Thanks for the detailed opinions! Really helped :)

Think I'll stay MT and just get DISCIPLINED.

They have not helped the economy of the masses
in India who need help. They have helped to deepen the rift between the classes, - the rich get rich, etc. The poor in India cannot even consider moving to get work now because the cost of housing in cities has escalated since we have created jobs for those who really did not need jobs. And those who need health care are really suffering and why? Because the trained doctors and nurses are the ones who have become the transcriptionists, since the transcriptionists make more than a doctor does in India. Check your facts on India. This one-sided trade agreement with India is not helping anyone but the big companies in America who can get work done cheaply. The companies HAVE increased their rates for the hospitals, have decreased our salaries by this farce they call voice recognition and reduced their costs even further by offshoring the work.

A call from the CEO? I do not even know his/her name, nor the names of any of the corporate officers. That is how much they care about me. Yeah, I got a mouse pad, a 1x12 inch glue down calendar, and a pen. I got more than that from the Golden Arches when they gave me a chicken sandwich when they opened up a new line 2 months ago. At least everyone in my family got a free sandwich.
People Who Don't Want to be Educated Can't Be Helped
The reasons for the outrage have been numerous and posted below. I am not going to qualify my answers to anyone who is too blind to see.

If you don't like this thread, then skip it. Easy enough.
Unions
Yeah. Unions have worked really well for the auto workers.
I don't see where unions have done anything for anybody.
My brother was in the aircraft mechanics union. He paid BIG dues. He worked 3 years without a contract with a major airline. When they were negotiating, the airline told them that they would give them their raises on paper but that they were going belly up and would use the mechanics as their scapegoat because they demanded more money. That is exactly what happened. The airline went belly up and the mechanics were the scapegoats. They never saw one penny of any raise.

Unions are just another big business. They take the workers' money, and the workers are just puppets doing what they're told, striking when they're told, unable to feed their family because of unions.
Unions
WE CAN'T WIN!!  So I guess I'm just going to shut up and type some more!
Ask for names of churches that do this. One helped me which I did not attend.
After div, major surgery and getting screwed by MQ, I was facing a disconnect. Begged them. Certain churches do not turn to govt for help, help each other (Mormons for one). I called churches, one after the other. When I got back on my feet, I paid it back as a donation.
Anyone have any recent experience with SoftScript? Wonder if the changes have really helped. nm

Thanks Wendy! You've helped alot! (nm)

Unions not the answer
I strongly disagree that unions will solve the problems afflicting the MT field. As long as there is outsourcing and other alternatives to traditional transcription, such as voice recognition, there will continue to be downward pressure on MT wages. Years ago when I worked in Human Resources for health care facilities, I sat on the other side of the negotiating table negotiating union contracts (our nurses were unionized), and I am appalled to this day at the underhanded tactics used by the unions. And talk about overinflated salaries - it is truly shocking what union officials make, and it all comes out of the pockets of union members who get a rather dubious return on their union dues. I just don't believe unionization will solve our problems. I think the only thing that will stop the downward pressure on MT pay is if an end is put to outsourcing (and I don't think its unrealistic to think that could happen at some point).
I've been in unions and know what
they can do for you. Without unions there would be no vacation pay, sick days, 40 hour week (for some).

I would very definitely love to be part of a union and also would be willing to strike if necessasry to make this happen.

Like all unions, strength is in the numbers so let's hope people support the idea.
Unions would help us get some recognition
Currently it's lacking 100%. Look at AAMT/AHDI -- they don't represent us, they're killing us. They need to be investigated and put on a short leash ASAP.
obama and unions
link The big money companies would not allow and would fight it big time. I know one southern California hospital sure did fight unionization

It is too late for unions. It never would have worked.

If IC's can't join EXISTING unions, then maybe
it's time for MTs to form a union that DOES include IC's, especially since they are a large part of this industry. They deserve better wages, too.
Completely agree. Before unions,
people were forced to work 7 days a week, 12 hour days, no benefits, no overtime, no minimum wage, no safety standards, etc etc etc.... THANK YOU UNIONS.
You know, there are unions in place already. Here is their payscales....
Full-time and part-time employee hospital positions payscales are as follows:

MT Level 1 to Level 3=
$23.68 to $28.70 per hour plus benefits which include 401b, health insurance, dental, vision, life insurance, Wellness Programs, 24 PTO days, plus paid holidays and a few other perks.

Did you not do your homework?

The payscales you have in this post are way too low.
Truth about unions - good for employees
My huband is a union member. Union membership is voluntary, with it you pay dues, in exchange your union officials bargain with the company for fair wages, benefits, and pensions. A union signs a contract and during that time, the employees have job security. If there is low work because the offshore companies messed up or shipments didn't come in, it is their union that pays them subpay to compensate the difference between average earnings and unemployment if he has a week off. Also, we pay nada for health insurance premiums, only $10 for office visit, and $5/$15 for Rx, 0 for dental 50% for orthodontics, and $20 for glasses. Without the union supporting these workers they would have no ground to stand on with regard to pay and benefits and working conditions. Thanks to the union, if my husband works Saturdays its time and a half, Sunday are double-time and heaven forbid a holiday he gets paid triple time. When he retires, we keep the benefits and a nice pension. Unions are not all about the mob - I have family in chicago and it is not as you describe it. Chicago is a high crime area and it's not the unions that are causing the problem, it is the quality of people who work in SOME of the factories which are lower paying and the socioeconomic drive that results in shady business and your so called mobter and gangster life.
Well, MY experience with unions is the exact opposite...
My dad was in a textile worker's union for 35 years. He had to go through a strike when he had 3 small kids. For six weeks, he received $20 a week and only two bags of groceries for the whole duration. He lost his job at 35 years from the plant closing. That is not to mention that his union wages had us always barely making it, and the union never once did a thing about the conditions they had to work in. He has struggled with a form of bladder cancer for 19 years from working in those conditions and the chemicals used there.

Ask the auto manufacturers what the union has done for them. Yes, the workers are making it fine laid off, but the companies are near death. Those companies feed our nation. We're 1000 miles from Detroit and our livelihood depends on those car companies staying up and running. My husband's company does not make a thing related to cars, but the company that OWNS his company does.

Bottom line is that if this industry has come to the point that we are discussing needing a union, then maybe we need to either get government intervention to standardize the industry, set regulations about ONLY US work for US medical records, and use only certified workers, OR we need to go back to college for our next career choice.

Unions in Canada, MTs make $23 hour plus Yep
I communicate with an MT in Canada and that is what she relayed.
I though unions not legal in some states (right-to-work states) nm
nm
I talked to them today. They want 3 years in a hospital or 5 years combination sm
hospital and at home or clinic and at home. For radiology, they want 3 years full time radiology. I thought they were very nice and I have a few friends that work for them and are happy. The pay seems average to high for what I am seeing now. I think they are 0.08 per line or 1.08 for radiology. Beats what I will have with the new MQ program.
Honda is 11 years old, 190,000 miles . Toyota was 15 years old and 279,000 superb

I worked on site for many years. I've been doing this for 10 years... sm
I've worked on site, at home, for small MTSOs, for nationals, for hospitals. I've been paid per line, per minute, and per hour. I've been an MT and a QA. I have ALWAYS worked weekends and ALWAYS worked nights for the shift differential because MTs can't survive on 6 or 7 cents a line. At least I can't and I type 105 wpm.

I've BEEN dedicated from day 1, sister, so you are barking up the wrong tree.
15,000 lines per pay period. 8 years with KS, 6 years on this account! nm
Not going anywhere else!
30 years - this WAS my career. The last few years you guys have ruined it.
You work 9-5? Big deal. I work more than you do. I bet I work harder too. Treat US with respect, lady!

Don't talk to us like that and don't expect us to kiss your feet. Kiss ours for a change!
See if you'll be producing more after 30 years of MT'ing and at 50+ years old.
I don't think so. My income increased every year also, until I reached age 50 and 30 years of MT'g, been downhill ever since.
I haven't, but have been looking too
I have also been trying to find something on the internet for these types of listings.  There are millions of ads for MTs and QA specialists, but it is hard to find a good site for managment positions.  I have had small success with Monster and Hot Jobs.  If you do find any other good sites, will you please let us know too?  Thank you and good luck with your search.
Haven't you
experienced everyone Anna? Congratulations on the 2-month mark!

Sucking up on the boards for the boss to see maybe? You might just keep this job.
No, I haven't tried everyone,,,
and thank you for the congrats. I do hope you're doing better these days.
