I have to completely agree with you.  It is really hard being an IC.  I am an employee now but started my career as an IC for a very small local company.  I have to say that I am thankful for everything I learned there.  It has made the MT that I am today but I would not go back to that if I had to.  There was never a kind word no matter how well you did your job or how many hours you put in.  There is a downside to not having a set schedule.  The MTSO feels they can work you into the ground.  I don't miss 16 to 18 hour days.  And I certainly don't miss being as disposable as I did then.  ICs are much more disposable than employees.  I will probably get negative replies to what I have said but what it all boils down to is respect.  ICs and MTs are essentially the same - they are trying to feed their families and keep roofs over their heads.  When there are much worse things out there that threaten our jobs like off shoring, why be petty about IC or MT?
