I was very encouraged about Spheris when I went to work for them. sm
Just speaking from my own experience, I feel like I should never have accepted a position with them in the first place, mainly because they didn't offer SE status. However, I did work for them for several months before finally throwing in the towel. To be honest, I don't know how I lasted that long.

The main thing is line count. Although I have averaged more than 300 lph for many years, I couldn't get over 65 lph average with spheris. On a really good day, I might get 75, but it had to be a perfect day where nothing went wrong with the platform, docs were clear, didn't have to look anything up, etc. I started thinking they must have been creative with the way they count lines (or it may be a combination of things such as not getting paid for demographic info, etc), but I can't prove it.

Low line count could also be due to:

Requirement to read e-mails before even getting started to work. Ordinarily that would be a reasonable request, but first you have to weed through the 50 or so that are not even for you (but come to you anyway!!!)-- and they keep on coming all day long. Total waste of time that you don't get paid for.

Searching the specifics (pages and pages) slows you down. And specifics is really a misnomer because there are a lot of exceptions to the specifics, such as do it this way - unless there's going to be a blue moon, in which case, don't do it then unless BOS - or doc - or clinic says okay; however, never mind what they say if the blue moon occurs on the 17th day of the month - unless it's a Tuesday. I know that sounds ridiculous, but that's the best way I can explain how it is.

Needless to say, I found it very difficult to accomplish anything under these circumstances. I expect to have account specifics and to have to do some looking up, but I feel that a company like Spheris should have most things, such as referring docs, clinic specs, etc., in their database and use a hotkey to access them and insert into the document. The first company I ever worked for (7 years ago) had this, so I know it can be done.

The time clock was also an issue for me - I don't mind giving a general schedule of when I'll be working, but I don't want to punch a time clock, and I'll never do it again unless someone wants to pay me an hourly wage.

You can't use your own expansion program. They use Shorthand. It's a good program, but it's pretty unlikely that you can merge your own shortcuts into it.

I wasted a lot of time, and lost a lot of potential income, while working for Spheris. I thought they would be a perfect fit for me for several reasons. One: Because they were well-known, I thought that they would offer job security as far as checks being on time, etc. But if you only make $150/pp, what difference does it make!

So while I was still with Spheris, I searched the MT Stars ads, and I discovered there are a lot of small companies out there that don't get a lot of attention. I applied to two of them and accepted SE work from both. They're very well-run, have a lot of work, pay is on time, and after only the second week working for them, my line count more than tripled what I made after several months with Spheris.

Sorry this is so long. I hope it helps a little in your decision.
I hope my posts have encouraged some who might
feel in a rut with MT work. It can happen and it can be rewarding to grow from one part of the profession to another. I am not naming who I am because most know me and I advertise upon occasion on this site as well as others.

I would like to think that our profession offers something for all of us and if we are so inclined to grow, it is possible to do so. Sometimes it is a matter of just getting your name out there and your reputation.

I would say in order that one has to be an MT first, QA, maybe a team leader/account manager, QA manager, and then recruiter, but not necessarily all of those things.

This field is wide open for someone who can add to it in a positive way who has the experience. I hope I can encourage others that want to grow that it can be done because that is all it was. You just have to be out there and make yourself known. Go behind the scenes and write to companies or call them that you might not see advertise openly for these positions. These are rare positions because not many give them up, but it never hurts to grow in the field and try to expand on that. Just showing the motivation sometimes is enough to get you there.

Also, don't pay attention to those who want to put it down or say bad things, they are everywhere in this field. Just don't let them intimidate you. Also, you have to be thick skinned because those who do not have the ambition or just want things handed over to them will always try and put you down. You have to keep your head up, keep your positivity, and just go for it.
Glad you are encouraged - I have a sore throat from talking
It worked for about a month and now right back to nothing at night. Do you have any throat spray for me?
or maybe it's really a good company. Give me a break. If a company isn't talked about sm
on here, good or bad, it's probably too small to matter and does not offer benefits or anything at all.
Can you give the name of the company - sm
I am in the process of looking for a new job and really don't want to choose one that doesn't pay on time!

TIA!
And, why don't they give their company name?
They should be up front about it. It would save everyone a lot of time.
You need to give a reason. Not every company
is a good match for every MT and someone may have had a personality conflict or some such thing so then they say it is a bad company.  You need to list facts like they don't pay on time, their line counts are off, sound quality is terrible, etc.
Can you give us the first letter of the company's name.
nm
Can you give me any specifics on this company?
Could you give me any specifics on this company?  I would like to know more.  Thanks.
Does any company give raises?
nm
could you give initials of company? I have been done like this before and
might be the same company.  I FINALLY got paid
yes, MTStars says it is okay to give company name.
nm
you can, and should, give the company name on this board.
nm
again, per moderator okay to give company name.
nm
For IC status, that's an insult. Can you give us a company name?
x
I have been at Keystrokes a while and have to give kudos to what I think is the best company out the
not always great in the beginning and I left and came back a few years ago. I am so glad that I did. The changes have been wonderful. I think it is refreshing to see a company actually improve over time with growth instead of going downhill.

I agree with you!
Clever way to give-up a company name that doesn't

Company start with an "E"..give us a hint. If they are doing it to someone else too, then I&#
Throwing in the towel is one way of putting it. I've done this routine too many times.
Can you give me a hint as to which company? The same thing happens to me too and I am an IC. nm
xxx
it's okay to give company names, per moderator.
nm
Maybe the company you work for would give you an advance? sm

Depending upon where you work, how long you have been there, size of the company, etc., that might be a consideration.  Also, maybe other temporary work, like Kelly Girls (if they even have that anymore).  I know we used to have temps in our office that were paid every week.

The pawn shop idea might be a good one.  I think if you don't have the money in 30 days, you can just pay the interest or whatever.  You wouldn't lose the instruments.  If you are willing to part with someone, ebay and Craigslist can provide some quick cash.  Good luck to you.  I am my sole support, and I have been in tight situations before and know how scary that can be.  My heart goes out to you.

Work not taken-Give company a chance

I have been with Transcend for almost 6 years and while they are not a perfect company they are better than most.  There have been mergers in the past-I actually came from the other MDI (which was a much more laid back company).  As far as I've seen with past mergers you get to keep your work.  They don't take you off it and give it to someone else.  That makes no sense to have to train new MTs for your accts and you on something else.  I know you are unhappy that you have to make a change but give Transcend a chance.  They are a good company. Is it a good fit for everyone?  No, but you won't know until you give it a chance with an open mind.  And before the bashers get on and say I am management, I am not, just another in the trenches MT who has worked for other services in the past. As far as outsourcing, I know it is done but as far as I can tell it is not a lot.  I work on 2 different platforms and both have plenty of work and have had for quite a while now.

I mean, any info you can give me about this company would be greatly appreciated.
nm
Can you give us the name of the company and if it's clinic or acute care? Thx. nm
s
Can you give the initials of this company to save others some grief? nm
s
Then you need to be professional, give a company website than can be checked out sm
and let people apply there.  Why in the world would you expect people to get their personal info to you, if you are less than professional yourself.  I certainly would not, especially after your post here.
How is turning you down for a position rude? Are they, or any other company, obligated to give you
No. As a recruiter, I am seeing this more and more. Maybe the hours you were available did not match what they needed. Maybe your equipment or speciality or background did not match. How is it rude not to hire someone? There would be no need for interviews if everyone was just hired because they applied. I did not understand most of this until I started recruiting. The company I work for is spoken well of on this board and then bashed at other times. I see a lot of people that think they are entitled to a position or a shift or a certain account. It is difficult to be on this side.
We give up on your naysayers. Great company, but if you choose to believe it's fishy, your loss.
nm
MedWrite Transcription... anyone work/worked for this company can give me any info?

Is it safe to ask a company after one year for a raise? Do companies give raises?

They used to give out $25 Amex cheques -- give them time. :-) nm

I get what you are all saying about them not having to give give you work, but...
I guess I just figure that as an IC, I am basically my own business and it is my responsibility to make sure that the work is done when it should be. I just think that if the standard of the company is 24 hour TAT then that is what I am agreeing to do when they hire me. There are advantages for both of us to the IC senerio, they do not have to pay benefits, or take care of collecting and reporting the taxes, and I have to adhear to the 24 hour TAT (or what every thier standards are) but can do that during hours that are convenient to me. Of course it is better for the company if they know exactly when I am going to be sitting at my desk and typing that is why they have the option of hiring employees. Just my opinion and wanting things to be like they used to be.. I guess I have to get out of my time warp or look a little harder for a company who really knows what IC status means.
Give it time, sweetie, give it time.

Don't give up what you now have. (nm)

We Cannot Give Up..
I have been doing this for 10 years now and I believe that none of us should give up. It is my understanding that part of the reason why they are going offshore anyway, besides low cost, is because they cannot find anyone who wants to do the work here. Partly, I disagree with nobody wanting to find work because it took me many, many attempts to find a job and I was so desperate at the time that I worked for one of those Indian companies. I found that team leaders there are not qualified enough to lead and really have no leadership abilities. Also, the MTs are not great either. If we all team up together, I believe with my whole heart that we can truly win our jobs back. Besides...how many people do you know wants their medical reports and social security numbers floating over there anyway? I know I don't.
give it to you
on a handout in the packet. I didn't gain, didn't lose.
I would give it a try
about how MTs were dropping out of the sky like flies.  I don't believe it.  Good ones are very hard to find.  Ones that will work and not take a half day to go to Wal-Mart.  It is not a straight typing job.  Most people think it is.  I have people calling me all the time saying My sister is interested in that.  She can type.  and on and on.
i give you the

Why give up one?
It sounds like you have a good thing going working amongst both? But if I HAD to give up one, I'd probably give up the national and stay with the smaller MTSO with plenty of work and good communication.
Seems a bit low? It IS A LOT LOW! Don't give
them the benefit of your time for the interview. Line pay is not worth it at all! Taking a job with a co that pays line pay says you are not into quality because apparently they aren't! All of the QA I know will not work for line pay. There are companies out there that pay decent for QA. Don't settle for it or you will be selling your fellow QA folks down the river. Hang tight and find these hourly jobs. I have one that is a pretty good rate. Tell the 2-cent-per-line companies what they can do with their QA jobs
ugh.. i give up.. that should say.. SM not NM ..

I give up

You know, most MTs who post on this board seem very negative.  I have 2 years experience, but you don't even know what I have been doing in those 2 years, or my educational background, so how could you even say I am not qualified?  I was just responding to a post directed at me.  Good grief.

wow...you can do all of that but you cant give
 Sheesh.. Glad I didn't apply.
in my exp. with KS, you give them
what schedule you prefer (what you already work now, etc.), whether you prefer to work a certain weekend day (I prefer 5a-1p, Sun-Thurs).  Basically, they trust that you will be on during most of those day time hours.  However, they are very flexible, and are very in tuned to you switching hours in the case of low work volumes, or appointments, etc.  They trust you will get your lines in, somehow, in your 40-hour week.  They just like to have a preferred shift, for paperwork, I think, like MQ USED to do, before they went anal.
Just keep looking, don't give up.
Real QA does take a fine eye and stellar information base. MTs that edit never make any decent money. It will take a couple years or so to really make a decent living alongwith the right company and account. Making 9 cpl on an account you can't even understand could wind up paying you less in the end than a 6 cpl account with speakers you actually can understand. So, the right fit is also important to your eventual success. Still, it'll take time. Just keep looking and be persistent.

Good luck to you and God Bless.
why not give it a try
I haven't used Meditech before, so can't comment on that, but you can tell MDI that you want to try it for a few days P/T and get a feel for it before committing to the job. They'll probably be okay with that.
Maybe. Only way to know is give them a try but
x
at least they give you something
that is better than the same line rate for years with the same company.
Don't give up.....

Compared to alot of the MTs on this site I would consider myself a newbie...7-8 yrs experience with stronger skills in psyche, but nonetheless a newbie.  This site has helped me out a lot, I promise you.  I have learned not to give up.  How long have you been in this field?  I worked at a hospital for a couple of years and then was fortunate to float around here at home.  I was recently let go from a company (7/21/2008) that I loved but due to offshoring, I was let go.  I had given alot of myself but not nearly as much as I could have as I look back on it.  But, in either case, you take the positive with the  negative and build upon it....you have to make it work for you (I love it).  I considered going outside my home to work but then changed my mind as I realized that my complaints are the same as all at home MTs (lack of socialization, weight gain, basically not getting out of the house).  I have decided that I love my job and only want to give FN the best, but I love me and want the same things for myself, so I am going to make some changes.....
