My team leader is the best. She
keeps us informed, always available, and provides more help than any company I have ever worked for.
Are you a team leader? NM

You have a decent team leader.
Mine is not that great and is not flexible.
I followed my MedWare ER team leader
She's awesome and I have enjoyed working for her, and she started about a month ago at MedScribe (Jax, FL).  MedScribe has been good, plenty of ER work plus the pay is a little higher, plus I still have PS for a team leader.
You should report that team leader to M.L.
I'm sure that he would take care of that. They are having a hard enough time getting MTs. They certainly don't need a TL who is running them off.
If MTs could trust their team leader or the supervisors
enough to talk to them without getting fired, there would be no posts on here, but you cannot say 1 thing without getting into trouble or getting fired.  These boards are only used for venting because we have no other place to go.  Deb is a monster so don't even try to talk to her.   Team leaders are arrogant and only there to collect a paycheck, not in it to help anyone but themselves.  They think they have been elevated to the position of CEO.
How is the trainer, team leader or regional mgr
They've already said that it could be months, maybe even into next year, before all the problems can be fixed.  Why would the team leaders or trainers have answers that the technical team doesn't even have, and if they do, why haven't they fixed it for everyone??
Nasty team leader, nit-picky QA, sm
mounds of account specifics and company instructions and I mean 7 binders each 3 inches thick , constant busy signals dialing in to get work, slow PC-company supplied, slow tech support, impossible to make line rate. Dock you big time for errors.

The only reassurance is self confidence

Do you seriously expect answers to that many questions?  If this was a paid survey - maybe.  I'll give you a general answer to the gist of your line of questioning.

Why do most of us work?  MONEY.  I'm willing to stick with any job as long as my bills get paid.  It is not to my benefit to keep changing jobs and going through the hassles of learning new software and platforms, and starting out again with no seniority and tiny PTO accumulations.  IMO, transcriptionists job hop mainly because companies overhire and make glowing promises.  Some things I can put up with - the rising costs of insurance, new company policies, requesting me to change my schedule for the good of all.  I will grumble, but I will stay.  If and when I cannot pay my bills due to CONSISTENT lack of work, or being forced into new platforms where it is impossible to make any money, I will move on to the next company.

Meanwhile I am constantly looking for ways that I personally can improve my production and be the best that I can be, and I don't blame the company if my own personal issues cause my productivity to suffer.  Given the option I would stick with my current job forever AS IT IS TODAY.  But clients come and go (yet nobody carries on about THEIR turnover), the industry constantly comes up with new standards that rip off the MT, company policies go into effect that whittle away paychecks by reducing line bonuses, glitchy new software is introduced that reduces productivity, new off clock demands that require us to donate unpaid hours, etc.  If the companies weren't constantly throwing curveballs like these that for some are the final straw, less MTs would on the move.

I have not been an MT all my career life, and if and when I cannot make a living being an MT, I will go back to coding or find another genre.  Yes, working at home has spoiled me rotten and I would really mourn if I had to give it up, but realistically I realize it is a possiblily.  It is a hassle to change fields, but I am not afraid because I have portable clerical skills that will always be in demand somewhere, and know I am capable of learning whatever I must to get the job done and keep the paychecks coming.

Too bad they got rid of Indian team leads. My US team lead is the worst.

thanks for the boost of confidence...i have been for 25 years and
they offered me a QA job in '95 so you are correct, one was a lawyer, the others were accountants so pardon my faux pas.
This is an issue of an MT not having confidence in her abilities. You can proofread while you SM

type.  I've been doing it for years.  I only re-read reports that the dictator is extremely nonsensical, can't put a sentence together to save his/her life, or if the dctator just seems like they don't know what they are doing.  But other than that, I feel pretty confident that I put out accurate reports.  I generally get 99-100% on my QA evals and I'm one the high producers in my department.

I've trained many a Transcriptionist who double, triple, even quadruple check everything they type because they just don't trust themselves.  If you are a newbie, I can understand not trusting yourself yet, but generally if you've been doing this for more than 2 years, you should know what you're doing and you should trust yourself.  If you don't, then you're in the wrong business.  Unfortunately, we are in a profession were we are expected to be both accurate and productive.  If you have a problem achieving both, then again you're in the wrong profession.

opppss meant purple team, not red team.
Sorry, I meant the purple team.
VR, $$ and Greed
You have put the situation into words better than I have seen before. I will definitely post my resume now in hopes of getting on with a smaller company. I worked for a large national and everything was about what was best for them, not the MTs. Regarding VR, I ultimatly lost my job because of it. Strange as it may seem, the system actually picked up foreign accents better than good English. Also, to keep from having to admit that the top exec goofed in paying a fortune for the system, they said it was working just fine. The end product was not from the VR system, it was from MTs deleting the VR dictation and transcribing from scratch. All this said, they were able to cut roughly 2/3 of the transcriptionists. This was a large clinic and they lost a number of doctors who refused to use the VR because of risks associated with it. Such a mess!
Exactly!! It is greed!
nm
Humans require a leader to guide us.
Or we can lead the pack...if we have leadership qualities recognized by our peers.

To Cece regarding VR, $$, and greed.

Thanks for posting your experience.  This is what I've been saying to people of Transcend regarding VR for a while now.  Your statement about "strange as it may seem, VR picked up foreign accents better" was very interesting.  When we think about it, it shouldn't really seem that strange because after all WE are teaching the VR system what the ESLs are saying.  Every single time the system got it wrong, we had to replace it until the system actually "recognized" it on it's own and started typing it automatically.  It wasn't the machine picking it up on it's own and doing well, it was the skill of the MTs constantly correcting the same thing over and over and over until the machine finally "got it".  Once the MTs poured all their sweat and tears into correcting it, they were no longer needed as much on that account and were switched to others that needed the training.  Slowly, but surely we became less valuable. Kind of like the production management team Transcend just let go.

I'm starting to see why so many new people are hired on at 10 cpl now, why the "policy" as far as raises had changed, and why the new direction for team leaders.  If the plan had been to transition all accounts to VR all along, they wouldn't be able to get many people to accept new jobs by coming right out and telling them they were being hired for 5 or 6 cpl.  They had to offer some sort of enticement.  By making the new base rate higher and doing away with annual increases, they would save money realizing that the rates would be cut to 60% in the long run with editing. They must have realized that a lot of the people there for years who had started at 8 cpl or less would be upset with the changes and the problems - and would need to be replaced as they left.  Just my opinion, but maybe this was also the reason for the cut-throat approach to promoting "get work while you can" when it's low and not taking an active role in remedying the situation.  As long as they didn't have to come right out and say we need to cut back, the MLSs would do it on our own because we couldn't afford to wait for work to miraculously appear.

I'm quite confident, and actually know for a fact, that some who had been working there for a while were told of the team leader positions before they were even announced - otherwise how would I have gotten that inside information about the PMs that I had posted on the Forum before it was announced?.  Also just my opinion, but what a convenient way to keep the "cheerleaders" who started at less than 10 cpl happy.  Offer them an hourly position because the management knows for a fact they would never stick around for 5 or 6 cpl just editing if they are producing 400 lines per hour while typing.  The rest of the MLSs would eventually get sick of scraping and clawing for work and would leave on their own.  A whole new labor force with a whole fresh set of people not aware of the problems brewing just under the surface or even close to a clue of what will hit them in the future.  A whole new work force that won't be eligible for raises for 3 years and most likely won't stay on anyway when they see what is going to happen.

Cece, you're living proof regarding what I had been saying about needing less people for VR in the long.  Someone emailed me the other day and said that it was told to them by management that at this point 60% of the work will still need to be typed.  I wonder what that percentage will be once the VR system is fully operational and running at peak performance, and the usual "slow times" roll around.  If we thought it was cut-throat before, imagine it when only 10 people are needed to edit a huge account like the one BT started out with on ERs, which actually happened at Transcend. Now just imagine the quality of that work when people are scrambling to do as much as they can as fast as they can to supplement the 40% reduction in rate. Quality won't be as important as making their usual paycheck to pay their bills OR they will be hiring brand-spanking new MTs fresh out of school or new to at-home work that think they've won the lottery at 10 cpl. They won't be paying for quality, they'll be paying for quantity.

see? greed IS good. NM

Whatever. You obviously support greed,

What did you expect when Transcend, the leader in overstaffing, bought them?

It's that 'ol GREED factor, again! - no/msg.

Mr. You-Lose-Ski is posterchild for GREED.

Greed is good? That is EXACTLY what capitalism
is all about. Make no mistake I am NOT defending certain MTSO's - I am simply pointing out to you that THIS (greed and corruption) is EXACTLY what you get with a capitalistic society.

This DOES NOT mean we have to give up freedoms, only that we have to demand Congress level the playing field - After all THEY gave the corporations the power and the rights they have... starting in the late 1800s

WHY ARE SO MANY WILLING TO just scream bloody murder at a system THEY support?

If you want do change things, roll up your sleeves and get to work, otherwise, give this company willing to PAY you for work a try - before you wish you had.
It's called greed and most companies are starting to become
guilty of that. They are not the only one.
to make sure the accounts are over-covered -- greed

FN is so very greedy.  Keep 'em over-covered for TAT.  Keep the gals scraping for bits.  They would rather have way too many MTs than have just enough.  I see things have certainly not changed...

Corporate greed is driving it right out of existence
can afford to live in the United States and stay in MT. More & more of us are getting out. Some, like me, are trapped... been at it for too long (30+ years), and most of us are now what you would call the Working Poor. Back in my 20's when I came to that 'crossroads', I should've gone with my friend and learned court-reporting. So far their jobs haven't been teetering on the brink of extinction (yet), like ours are in MT.
That was a couple of years ago. Greed, India, not enough

QA, lies, lies, and more lies.  They lost a couple of accounts and they lost a major account, what little was left wasn't much.    I've heard L started another company and M is still her slave.  Don't know any other details.

Until about the last year it was a great place to work and it took a lot of adjusting going from gross lines to 65 lines.

Then you are a line leader taking what you want to type, the rest of take what your leave, Give me

Yep, greed. The love of money is the root of all evil. NM

Be careful
Be careful
All I can say is be careful...
You will get a great offer, good training and be happy as a lark ... until you're out on your own, no one from IT will respond to your inquiries about technical problems, and they'll train you on one account (one that gives you great line counts) and then presto-chango, you're typing every ESL doc they dug out from wherever it is they hatch them from and you'll make ZERO dollars. I think the problem here is, like a lot of others, the good dicatators are going through VR (you'll notice, Transcend has a TON of openings for VR editors), and we (the MTs) are getting stuck with the dopes who cannot talk. I'm giving some serious thought to switching to editing - I'd rather do that and do twice the work, than try to figure out what these jokers are saying. Anyway, I was making great money during training with Transcend, but am now LOSING money and trying to decide if I should look elsewhere.
Be careful, though
My training went exceptionally well and I was on cloud 9. Then - WHAM!!! They put me on the account I was hired for (of course, no one told me it was different than the one I trained on), and it is AWFUL. I made great money right after training, until this new account ... now I'm taking a loss. These dictators are AWFUL - so I hope for your sake, when your training is over, they don't do the same to you.
Be careful. (sm)
I don't know if they do this anymore, but I was hired at a gross line count and then they changed things after hiring. I did the math, and I came out as losing money. Many others were complaining of the same bait and switch at the time.

I also ran into the absolute rudest QA staff of my long career at JLG. It sounded like the owner was going to try to straighten them out at the time, but I didn't stick around to see whether she did.

I had the highest line rate at JLG that I've ever had (13 cents, can't remember if with or without spaces); however, the constant running out of work and being asked to take the day off!, constant switching around of accounts combined with the rudest QA ever made it absolutely not worth it. I've come to the point I realize that it's the entire package an MT has to look at. Others have paid less, but I've been happier.

I hope this helps. I know you asked for those with a happy experience, but I thought I'd give you an honest experience.
Be careful
Whether you can do it or not depends on what they hire you for. Look at the postings a few days ago where people talk about the one account with all the ESLs that people scream about.
Be careful with them
Good pay, but many many problems. 2 yrs with them & I can't take it any more.
Careful about A. They will tell you
that you are hired for tier 3, but then say they meant 2 or 1 and give you a much lower rate!!
Be very careful.

You're not supposed to be sending intercompany information anywhere.  I would get it in writing first that your ISP isn't going to be tracked and your info handed over to Transcend so they can fire you.  With all the info on this board about what they are doing, Transcend still has their weekly cattle calls on the job seekers' board, so it doesn't look like Transcend is going to lose anything.

Just be very careful.

Be careful
There are huge tax implications. Yes, you get to deduct for certain home-office expenses, but only under specific guidelines and there is a minimum amount that you must have spent out of pocket. If the company is paying you very, very well, then I'd say go for it. Under no circumstances should you take an IC/statutory emp. (where they pay no taxes) job at the same rate of pay as an employee. Please take the time to consult with a tax person before getting yourself in what could be a very expensive proposition. You won't be sorry.
And be careful.
It can mess up your Word program so that some of your commands won't work any more (if you use Word for anything else).
And be careful.

It can mess up your Word program so that some of your commands won't work any more (if you use Word for anything else).

Be careful
Depending the account you get you may spend more time with the demographics than it is worth and the line counts can be off if you copy/paste into regular Word and check them yourself, or even using a line counting program.
Be careful
Check the archives, where it is posted that they do not pay on time or do not pay at all, as well as some taking or having taken legal action against them.
Be Careful
I worked for them and made no money. When a QA position opened, I tested for it. They claimed I didn't pass. However, 2 years later, I am the QA director for another company. Hmmm. I think someone had a friend or relative that wanted the job too.
Be careful
This company makes a lot of promises they don't keep, their Editor is extremely difficult to work with, and their employee turnaround is awful.  Watch yourself.  I worked for them for two years and am SO glad to be done.
Be very careful...sm
They will tell you they pay for spaces but when you get your check (six weeks later) you will see you are not because the IType system they use does not count them.  When you inquire you are lied to and told they are not sure what is up.  They keep you on the hook but know all along they are not paying for spaces.  Apparently, they have been doing this for several years.  Do a search on this board.  As well, still waiting for my last check and it's been several months.  Won't respond to calls or e-mails.  No work either most days.
