I have 31 years experience as an MT and am also a QA.  Read skeptical's profile above and it's just about the same as mine.  I also get her point.


As a QA of newbies, I see what the production-only mindset does.  YUCK!  I agree a lot of these companies only want speed and that's sad because, IMHO, being an MT is not about speed only and I really feel sorry for the new MTs who didn't know what it was like when MTing was fun.  It was fun to research new words, techniques, etc. and learn new things and feel triumph at figuring something out. 


But production has taken all the fun out of it.   I remember when there was no laparoscopic procedures and bypass surgery was new and I got to learn all that new and exciting stuff without the pressure of PRODUCTION!! 


OLD SLOW MT WITH TONS OF KNOWLEDGE AND PROUD OF IT!!!  


Knowledge is forever.
