Unionizing is not the answer. all that does is make the union richer instead not the MTSO. It doesn't make the employee any richer, for sure. My union experience in the past has hurt me more than helped me, and I would never want to be part of any union again. Union bargaining hat costs thousands of thousands of jobs in this country. But the union goes on, just the working people are out of a job.

The lack of upbringing, tact, or even basic common sense or civility among most of them is incredible. Even more incredible is that they've got SOMEone buffaloed into believing they're worth the big money they're getting paid.

AllType didn't rock for me

Yes, I contacted the recruiter right away.  However, I was told that I misunderstood the interview.  But, how could I misunderstand information that was never provided?  


I'm glad that your emails are answered.  Mine went 5 days without an answer.  I don't know why yours are answered while mine were not.  Maybe it is because you already work there?  Or, maybe you are now communicating with someone other than the recruiter?


The first excuse for the delay in response was that the company was having email issues.  The next excuse was that managers had been in a meeting that lasted 5 days.  This was all after having been given 24 hours to return the tests; that's 24 hours after the recruiter sent the email, not 24 hours after I received it.  Too bad if I wasn't online 24/7.  My conclusion:  It appeared that I would be expected to jump when they said jump, but they would respond at their convenience.


My main gripe through it all was that at every turn there was a new rule to follow or a hoop to jump through.  For instance, after accepting the employee position, I received an IC contract.  It had not been revealed to me initially that I would be an IC for 30 days, but this IC contract contained the stipulation that I would be confined to a set schedule from day one, and the schedule could not be changed for 6 months.  The IC contract specifically read that it was a 1-year contract, not 30 days as the recruiter subsequently claimed was the rule.  Plus, I was required to obtain an EIN from the IRS--none of these are usually required for employees.  BTW, it is easy to obtain an EIN and I, in fact, already have one.  But, my complaint is that they required it.  As an employee, an SSN should be sufficient.  So something didn't add up right.  Also, I'm picky when it comes to written contracts versus spoken words.  I always lean towards accepting the written contract as the whole truth.


Also, on the first round, I was told to be sure to let them know if I had any vacations scheduled soon.  On the second round, I was told to be sure to inform them of any doctor appointments and any other appointments scheduled for the next 90 days.  After being offered the job and providing references, I was then asked to fill out an application.  It seemed like it was never going to end. 


Because we always get treated the best during the recruitment process, I really was scared about what was ahead, and just how far AllType would go with regard to control and manipulation.  Therefore, I withdrew my acceptance of the position.

then why doesn't the hospital contract directly with the MT?  Cut out the huge salaries for the suits.  No one can convince me that the cost of transcription isn't inflated by outsourcing!!

HOWEVER---Google them and get yourself a deal, don't pay retail.  They can be found on E-Bay as well for cheap cheap.


They completely block out sound and what you do hear is clear as a freakin' bell.  I accidentally severed the wire on mine last week and had to use regular earbuds and I flipped out.  I could hear, but it sounded just crappy.  Thankfully my husband is a bit of a gadget guru and he was able to solder the wire together and it works as good as new. 


Best piece of equipment I own frankly.  Now....if I could just score a deal on one of those Mirra chairs by Herman Miller I could almost love my job again.



Account Managers/TL's Rock at Transcend!

I am not sure who you are referring to at Transcend, but each and every manager I have had at Transcend has done nothing but support and encourage me every step of the way.  I have worked hard, and they have rewarded that hard work.


The honesty and team camaraderie is so refreshing.  I previously worked with another transcription company where I felt secluded, discouraged, and only was provided with negative feedback.  Getting questions answered were usually within 24 hours, not in minutes as it is here at Transcend.  If I needed a sample immediately, it was not available to me. 


Transcend provides its employees with so much information at their fingertips that I was almost overwhelmed when I first started.  They continue to be supportive and trustworthy.  I never feel as though management is ever unavailable and, in fact, they provide their phone numbers to reach them 24/7!  Kudos to you, Transcend!

First time anybody where I worked ever wished me a happy mother's day and I really thought it was very kind...I love TT and consider it a blessing to have my job with them. I do pay all my bills too. Happy Mother's Day to all moms!

that you escaped from.  If you were to read this board or if you HAD read this board in the several weeks to months past, you would realize that these people who are screaming about this merger are the people who have been sitting around waiting and begging for work.  Pray tell, please explain to us all how you expect someone to be so productive when there is not work provided for them!!!

I always have had something to fall back on too.
I have a full time job as hospital employee, plus an IC subcontractor position for a few hours a day.  I will say though, the only thing that saved me the last two weeks was the fact that I get paid downtime for full time job.  It's an hourly wage, which is not nearly what I average on production (about half), but at least it is something.  I had work with my IC position, but things were slow, plus the facility was closed a couple days for the holidays.  I myself am not complaining though,  it was nice to have some time off.     
Ah but see, you DO NOT fall in the category I was

referring too.  You do produce and I would almost bet very accurate work. YOUR kind of work is highly appreciated. Does not matter whether you need to take a break after 4 hours, 2 hours, whatever.  That works for you and I think that is great.  If you read my post, I am referring to the people that think they should get paid more to work less.  Yes MT is a production position no matter how you look at it.  As long as you are happy with your production and your company is happy with your production, then double happiness for both of you. This was aimed at the people that are griping at offshoring, constantly wanting higher wages etc that DO NOT produce accurate work and in fact instead, more and more of their work has to go to an editor.


I think any MTSO would be nuts not to work with an experienced MT over a less experienced one, even if that means we need to take a few more breaks, etc.  I am no spring chicken myself. 


As far your statement of ME getting back to work....... Nah,  I only work Mon through Fri roughly 8-4 or 8-5, so at night I get lazy

I worked for them last fall for a few weeks, pay was
9.5 cpl, but always ran out of work and still after 6 weeks they never got around to giving me a second account, even though they said they would. Left after that.
I'm in CA, too...I hope it doesn't fall off, LOL (sm)
Hey fatcat...My primary is very high ESL as well, but it's one of the Lanier accounts. Apparently, the account is phasing out the Lanier system and going to Inova, which is an Escription platform. Perhaps your account just isn't going to affected by it.

If you have any questions, feel free to send me an email. In the meantime, I'm gonna get some coffee and check to see if my lifeboat is ready to go in case CA does break off into the water, lol!!!

Lots of these big MTSO co's are in bed with AHDI, and I have a hunch the whole kit-n-kaboodle of 'em are ridin' for a fall. Or a public hangin'.

The recruiter is the sweetest person in the world when trying to sucker you in, but will bite you in the back like a viper after a while.  The honeymoon phase was wonderful, but then they started changing all the terms that I had agreed to one by one, including a cut in pay.  She got really mean and nasty towards then end and I just quit.  I didn't need to be treated like that.

Tired excuse... what about fall and after the first of the year...
You constantly hear... work is slower around September through early November because kids are back in school and more moms are typing full days. Or Jan-April is slow because no one is taking any vacation during these months?? There is always some type of excuse for there being lack of work!
Most companies fall short on their promises

either in the interview or in the first few weeks of employment.  Just like any small business, things are more likely to go sour in the beginning and not the end (usually).  I have been through bait and switch with work and expectations in regards to scheduled time worked because I am an IC.  This is my biggest pet peeve. 


I've been doing this for 19+ years. 


My first SE job:  Dangled a job at a time and IM'd me literally to death.  I had to give it up.  My nerves were frazzled. 


My first employee job:  Was wonderful, but I had a death in the family and had to give it up during the training phase - couldn't commit.  I was executor and decision maker.  When I went back a few weeks later to begin training, the company had changed my days to work - so I couldn't commit.  So whose fault is that?


My online job I've had for over a year now and is wonderful.  They know the true meaning of IC.


I have my own accounts that I've had for 10+ years and one new account that was a physician from an on-site job that I had and liked my work.  He's an ESL and begged me even when I really didn't want to have to pick-up tapes.


Another company I have been in contact with through a friend's recommendation is now on the job board needing help, but told me they were only looking for acute care, so..........  Do I go there yet once more?  This would be an IC job. 


Your post is long, but I can tell you this:  You will have a hard time finding companies that pay, are willing to give you a steady stream of work, and come through on what is promised.


As far as the company providing HR and equipment, they should.  I test for free, I train for free, and I study and learn new accounts for free until I've built up production.  No one is that productive on a new dictator from day one especially mixing that with learning a new platform. 


So, yes job-hoppers are there, but what can we call MTSOs that advertise and then not come through in the end for us MTs?  I guess there are no names for that.........  What do we call an MTSO that treats us like employees, but pay us low wages as an IC?

all companies, all posts. These same "cheerleaders" have posted negative on other companies IM SURE, but yet when they find their place they think it okay to bash others who have not. Very annoying. There is nothing wrong with giving neg/pos on companies, but it should NOT lead to an argument, bashing, etc. When making a decision a pro/con list is very affective and those looking for a new company or doing just that by reading this information. I have turned jobs down solely for the "attitudes" of the cheerleaders. I figure if they have people that snotty and high and mighty working for them, I don't want to be in that category or atmosphere!!

Same boat as you..
I've worked there seven months, same things.. evenings, weekends, and nonstop STATs.. and when I asked for a raise I got blown off.. Then, they wonder why people arent that faithful to be at their beck and call. I've gotten a hospital job and only work for Focus a little bit now. They sure want a lot but do not want to give anything in return.  Besides that, try checking your line counts. They never seem to add up. I can work for a dog for hours on end and hardly make anything.

   I too have small children and no way to stay on a "fixed" schedule.  Unless perhaps they let me schedule myself work every 20 minutes?  Hey that might work.  Something like:


8:00-8:20 work


8:40-9:00 work


9:20 to 9:40 work


10:00 to 10:20 work


and so on and so on....


Of course, that also means I might have to take breaks IN BETWEEN those breaks (kids need help with the potty, someone is hungry, the bus is coming, etc).  BUT if I can manage to squeeze in 20 minutes here and there, will they keep me? 


Welp, there goes my part-time job.  Who wants my un-done reports?  Anyone?  Anyone?

when I worked for them a little while back. What got me was that they only would give you 1 stupid job in your job at a time! Then, you had to wait for what seemed to be a long time, and I have high-speed internet. Anyway, at first, I was receiving pretty good workflow, but that quickly changed to nonexistent, and I agree with you that they are doing the overhiring thing. I am talking about them, alright, with my family, like they have in their ads, but it certainly is not very positive at all! Sorry, I call them as I see them!

Not pregnant , but looking for QA by the hour.  Have lots of experience doing QA, but am only finding production pay.  If anyone knows of hourly or salaried position, please help!

I think it is absolutely the worst part of working from home.... the fact that everyone thinks we are just sitting here watching TV and not really working.  The constant phone calls.  People say Well, can't you take a coffee break?  It frustrates me to no end.

Get so tired of these companies testing someone with obvious experience with even 15 minutes of dictation. Not useful and a waste of my time. I refuse to do it anymore. The best companies I have found let you just begin to work, no complicated platforms and if things don't work out on either side, no sweat. You can't tell by a test whether you are going to work out or not. Some have the nerve to test you and never reply OR worse yet, test you and you find out later you get the same rate of pay as someone with half your experience. That really sets me off. One of my biggest pet peeves.

My secondary has had low work for quite some time now. My primary, however, had enough work to carry my lines for awhile. However, the past 2 weeks both accounts have been very slow and I have not had enough work to meet my line commitment. This is very frustrating. I do hope it picks back up soon, as the timing is very bad for us financially. I check throughout the day and work from 8 a.m. to midnight checking for work, but this is hard right now with other commitments.

with Spheris for 4 years and had done very well but the last 6-8 months with one thing or another (changes in accounts, having to do all the most difficult work so it's hard to make a good line count, having to do editing for a while at 100% proofing to sound, and lots of micromanagement), paychecks are $500 or more less than than they used to be. I've made more using PTO but I can't get a day off anymore.  I had taken a part time job to supplement but now it's just making up the difference.  I work for 3 companies now and I am trying to decide what to do...
