I got offered hourly. Trying to decide. nm [2008-08-20]

I was offered per line, turned them down [2008-08-20]

my 1.5 cents [2008-08-17]
Can't speak for Quig but feel he/she may have just meant quit before you are pushed to the point of exploding and then they can try to use that against you.
If I was in your position, I would immediately take another job (the best of the two offers) and cover yourself on the current job by either asking for a day or two off to see if the new job is a keeper, or taking a sick day...
if you can financially take the chance you can just quit.
What I have done in similar situation is to document what is currently owed to me, then offer a notice (it does not have to be 2 weeks) but ask for confirmation that you will be paid for anything earned over what is owed to the company. If they won't confirm *that* then it's time to go...
Have you considered asking them straight up why they are doing this to you all of a sudden? Sometimes the best approach is just being upfront. That said, I know all about games, so you are the best one to judge whether being direct would correct their behavior to you or just make it worse.
Good luck!
My 2 cents [2008-08-13]
>wish you luck, but I'm afraid you will be sadly disappointed, perhaps not right away, but given enough time, if you go to work for them.<
This could be said of every transcription company out there. I don't work for focus, nor have I worked for focus, but I think you just have to take every comment with a grain of salt. Ive yet to see any one company not complained about by someone at some point on this forum. Just my 2 cents.
I was offered a position about a year ago [2008-08-12]
and did not take it as you had to be on call every third week at night with a pager for stats.
Offered a position [2008-08-11]
set up for training, etc., and then never heard from them again.
Some get 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, and 5 cents typing.nm [2008-08-08]

I was offered a job with DSG and it seems a lot of negativity on here. Is anyone happy there and [2008-08-08]
do all the accounts have this bad sound I hear so much about. Since they use DQS if they are rerecording from another sound file they will get a very bad sound from that. I do know that but you wouldntthink their own accounts would have that same bad sound.
Absolutely not true. I was offered a position in [2008-08-06]
management so to say I couldn't hack it is bull. I just couldn't deal with the BS.
Sporadic problems with my account on DSG1 with sound but overall if offered DSG1 I would give it a [2008-07-31]
try, this is a good company. Not enough experience with DSG2 to give you a currentopinion.
The wages offered to MTs with alot of years is (sm) [2008-07-22]
in addition to the adjectives you used, downright demeaning, and bordering on questioning one's self-worth. I'm really so sick over it because for the past 2 decades I have devoted my life to MTing; gave 100+% each and every day, kept up with the new drugs/terminology (on my own time). I even have gone so far beyond what is expect because of my love of MTing and medicne, that rather than read a good juicy romance novel at bedtime, I'd read one of the doc's I transcribed for leftover medical journals, just keep on top of the game. This was while working inhouse--- and all because I was properly compensated for my hard efforts. Working from home for an online,....that don't give a rats azz....all they want are the lines and 98.5% accuracy at all times. Period. That's just one of the problems with working from home -- the impersonalization that accompanies it. I'm headed back inhouse where I'm appreciated, have a blast with my coworkers, docs, nurses, tecs, and be paid what I am worthy of after doing this for over 1/4 century. No more penny checks for me. No more line counts. No QAing. AMEN.
If it is your secondary that has OT offered how do you do it? nm [2008-07-21]

They offered a really nice [2008-07-11]
line rate for me to do straight transcription. It topped any other company I looked into.Their benefits seem awesome as well. I got a phone call from 2 ladies that work there and they seem to be as nice as they can be.The kicker is that my shift is going to be at night. When I tested and accepted the position, I thought awe I can handle that. I am getting cold feet now.
I was offered the same 7.5 cpl with s/m [2008-07-10]
4 years of Acute Care and OP experience, after telling them my line count averaged out to 190 lph with heavy ESLs. I also made a 98% on their online test, so I don't think experience counts much with them. They did tell me that after I got off QA they would give me the .09 that I am making now, but wouldn't put in the offer letter in writing, so I told them to take a hike. I think they are a big scam.
I was offered 0.9 cpl, but recruiter never called back [2008-07-10]
The recruiter told me she would call me back later on the same day and never did. I called her bluff. How sad!!
Offered hours of 3-11 for MQ. That is 3 am [2008-05-30]
nm
I have 20 years and have never been offered [2008-05-28]
and if you're reliable you probably do, but if they give it to you with 10 years of experience, then they have to shell it out to everyone with 10 years or more, so doubt you'll get 10 cpl. I've only been offered 9 at the most. Good luck though...
At 6 to 8 cents/line? [2008-05-23]
Are they kidding?
They pay me better than anyone else has ever offered. [2008-05-20]
When I was checking around for jobs, no one wanted to pay more than 8.5 for standard typing and 4 cpl for editing. I get paid way better than that. So, maybe I have missed something.
I was just offered 2 cents for QA [2008-05-19]
what a slap in the face.....
I would do QA for 2 cents/line [2008-05-19]
If all I had to do was fill in blanks, with ZERO proofreading and feedback.
5 - 7 cents/line.......... [2008-05-18]
I bet it is for voice recognition
20 yr + exp. they offered 5 cents [2008-05-17]
I have over 20 years experience and Spheris offered me 5 cents a line!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
5-7 cents [2008-05-16]
They have got to be kidding !!!!! How stupid do they think we are?
Ask what is a line. I was offered 6 clp for a 42 black character line sm [2008-05-16]
that seemed to strange, but really it was not so bad. Came out pretty close to a 65 k/s line at 8.5 to 9.
Are you sure your were speaking w/Focus? [2008-08-20]
Just spoke to them yesterday and was told that there are no hourly editing positions, only by line. When were you offered hourly?
I just couldn't figure out [2008-08-19]
what company and if so, why say CMTs only and then not put the rate of pay. I will never be a CMT either (20 years in MT field) and I think I can pretty much do what any CMT can do other than pay $300.00 for worthless initials. I know a CMT and she got offered less than me at my company. So, for whatever its worth (probably nothing), I just thought I'd ask about this one-liner ad demanding CMTs for a maybe account as to what the pay would most likely be since they are demanding certification.
My SIL graduated from a course and thinks she's certified; I had to tell my brother that she's not certified until she takes the test by those ladies. Anyway, the client has the ultimate say-so, not the BOS. So even if you pass the test, does that mean you follow those guidelines? Doubt it!!!!!!!!!!
I do get up and stretch. [2008-08-19]
The company I work for has no problems with their MTs getting up to stretch. In fact, they encourage it. I am only 38 and I have had major back surgery with a fusion of my L5-S1. So, I think I know exactly what you are talking about.
There are a lot of MTs who are spoiled. They want everything offered to them, including flex time, benefits, PTO and a good line rate but everything is on their terms. Companies have a TAT requirement to meet and they need to ensure they have people working to return the work back to the customer in a timely fashion.
My point is that there are good companies out there that do pay over 9 cpl as an employee with excellent benefits. It just all depends on what is the most important to the MT.
Me too [2008-08-19]
I'm a level 4, and there is overtime offered on both my primary and secondary. I bump over to my secondary probably only a couple days during the week for a couple of hours but have never been out of work.
To Quig: Please clarify [2008-08-18]
Without going into details, when I was asked by the companies that offered me the jobs why I was leaving, I said that I did not agree with some of the things the company I worked for was doing, but did not want to bad-mouth my current employer. I also said that under these circumstances, and since my employer had no idea I was looking for another job, I did not want them to contact my current employer. They both said that was fine, not a problem. Under what circumstances could an employer give a bad reference? I thought that an employer could only verify that you had worked there, but legally could not give details of your employment. I have nothing to hide but would just like to know.
Perhaps it is because sm [2008-08-16]
Most companies these days outsource work to your country because you are cheap. Here in America, we bust our rear ends to work through school and bust it even harder at work because OUR work is being sent to YOUR country. Which is b.s. in itself. And you wonder why people don't like you. Sharing is one thing. Outsourcing work is by no means sharing, it is giving work away to someone who will do it for a couple of cents and not care about the quality of it, so long as it gets done. Bah. YOU PEOPLE disgust me.
Info about Wordz from this summer. [2008-08-16]
Wordz was not the job for me, but I have nothing bad at all to say about them. Here is some recent info from this summer, hope it helps:
Pay on time by DD.
I worked on 2 platforms. (Winscribe and Transnet) Both use your version of Word and your Expander of choice or autocorrect. The platforms were just for management of voice files and attaching/uploading documents, no demographics were filled in.
All demographics were manual, and you download pt lists (some in notepad where you can copy and paste names and some fax copies where you have to retype everything).
Provider/address lists were provided for letters.
Job lists come out 4x per day. On at least one platform you have to check the job list for your work and manually enter the dictator# into the transnet platform to download jobs (you are not routed jobs automatically on the Transnet platform).
Pd training. You get about 4+ hours of phone training your first day, 3 modules. The longest module of training is administrative, paperwork, file management that you are expected to do and the other modules are on the transcribing and audio platforms. The administrative/paperwork/file management is the longest for a good reason, you spend plenty of time wrangling voice files, job lists, and pt lists every day.
QA was outstanding and very helpful. Quick relevant feedback and even a good job here and there.
There are set hours - sort of! They do ask that you set range of hours they can count on you to be there every day (maybe 8:00 to 3:00 for example) in case they need to reach you for stats or whatever, but you do not have to necessarily be working all that time, and you are not monitored. You are just expected to complete your account assignments within TAT.
Pay is low (it was 7.5 cents), but they justify that by the fact that they match transcriptionists to doctors....no pools. (That did not turn out to be the case for me, I was up to 20 dictators with more to be added on, although I know many are assigned to a small # of stable dictators...just get as much specific info during your interviews about exactly what accounts you would be on and how many providers so you can make an informed decision.)
Good luck!
To: OYR [2008-08-15]
I had no problem during my training period getting 5 reports in. I've been at MDI for about 6 months now, so I'm not sure what it will be like during the winter holidays, but my workload currently is stacked. My account is very busy and generally remains busy. It seemed that during the school year, it was harder to get my lines in during the morning hours (I'm guessing most of us are moms), but this summer, we are being asked to cover the early morning hours. I'm very flexible as to when I can work. I generally work a couple of hours in the afternoons and a couple of hours at night. I find it doesn't take me more than 4 hours to get my 700 min line requirement in. I did ask during my interview if I would be able to get backups if need be and was told yes. I've yet to need any backups. I also tend to like being off on a holiday or work only an hour or 2 to help out with coverage, which usually holidays are slower.
As for OT/raises. There is no OT -- we don't punch a timeclock, so they don't track the number of hours you're working. You're statutory employee (same as IC but they take taxes out). I specifically asked about raises since I hadn't had one in over 5 years at my last job. I was told regular pay audits were not done. It was case-by-case and could be discussed with my supervisor. I did, however, negotiate a better line rate during my interview by committing to a higher number of lines per day than the min required. Something you didn't ask about, but that falls in this area, is incentives. My account has NO general incentive program (i.e. every 100 lines over the minimum you type is an extra 5 cpl, nothing like that), but when my account is backlogged, they have offered an incentive to get it cleaned up. It's actually based on the minutes of dictation transcribed rather than the lines, which is nice if you get one of those bumbling docs who likes to repeat himself. The incentives don't happen too often, but when they do, I like to make my share!
MDI is a great match for me. I'm not someone who likes to punch a time clock and sit at my desk for 8 hours. I like to go for walks, have lunch with my friends, take care of my kids, and work when I want to work. I love working nights, guess I'm a night owl. The pay is so much better than where I came from (MQ). The platform was very easy to learn and the QA has been wonderful to me.
I, too, have read negative posts about MDI and I find them so hard to believe because of my great expereince, but I know everyone's experience can be different and it's based on so many things -- supervisor, accounts, personal schedules, etc. I can't speak for anyone but myself, so please don't leave 1 job before you're sure you like the new one. The account you get may not have the amount of work available when you need it to be. So give it a few weeks to try it out. I'd say a month. That was the other great thing about MDI -- after I was released from QA, I was told I could work my line count up slowly -- starting out 300 or 400 lpd and adding 50 lpd every other day until I got where I needed to be. This was a big help since I was still working my other job (I told MDI up front that I would be juggling 2 until I was sure it was a good fit for both of us and they actually encouraged that).
Good luck in whatever you decide. I hope you get the right fit for you!
Yes, the incentive was based on [2008-08-15]
number of minutes dictated/transcribed. For example, if the report I loaded was 2 min/50 seconds and the incentive was 25 cpm-- I would get an extra 50 cents (give or take for the 50 seconds). We have to keep track of all the minutes and there is usually a required minimum of 500 minutes that you have to transcribe in order to be eligible. There are also time constraints -- like it only runs for 4-6 hours. You also have to maintain your commitment for the rest of the pay period. That's the only type of incentive I've had my account and they're not very often -- I think they ran it twice (maybe three times) in the last 6 months.
I hope your accounts pick up soon.
India Shmindia [2008-08-15]
People have such nerve these days. Idiots outsourcing OUR work over there to even bigger idiots to get it done, obviously :P No wonder no one wants to pay us what we're worth these days, they have someone that will work for a few cents over there. Now get the heck off the board!!
You volunteer to work the weekend (sm) [2008-08-14]
after having 40 hours, and only get the extra lines you type. I have never been offered incentive, OT, etc. However, I've been with company who ran out of work all the time, so, having the extra lines over the weekend helps my bottom line a lot. No complaint here. (It would be nice to have incentives over 1200 lines per day required, maybe they'll do that sometime.) My experience has been wonderful with them!
To sm re: MDI versus Keystrokes [2008-08-14]
Would you please answer a few more questions if you don't mind?
1. Please explain what you mean by Keystrokes convoluted pay scale? (They offered me 8 cpl to start, minimum 1200 lines per day. I was told OT they do not want you working OT unless requested. No line incentive.)
2. Regarding MDI, I don't want to work weekends but was told you could work the minimum (700 lines) on your weekend day and that didn't seem to bad (a few hours of work and it's done). Does that seem realistic?
3. If you need to go away for a weekend or something comes up and you cannot work the weekend day you are scheduled, does MDI allow you to take it off, as long as you let them know in advance? Can you switch a Saturday with a Sunday if necessary? Do they hassle you or expect you to make up the lines during the week? I hate to think that I can never make weekend plans. It doesn't happen often but it would be nice to know you can.
4. How is MDI about taking time off for vacation, or if you need a sick day? I'm rarely sick but want to know what to expect.
5. I was told that generally, you can work as much as you want (although you do not get overtime), and that they do not restrict work. Do you agree?
Thanks in advance for anything you can tell me with regard to the above.
They do exist sm [2008-08-13]
I have had 2 offers this very week for straight OPs. One is a C-phone thing and the other platform. One is high pressuring me to take the job, the other offered me 9.5 cpl. THEY DO exist.
The problem is that so many of these gals out there think they are OP note specialists and they are not. The crapola they turn out is incredible (I see in old work, in samples, in my editing capacity because I edit OPs). I think it takes away from those of us who can do it properly. Some companies have gotten to where they won't hire a diva because the standard Basic 4 MTs are better at it. This puts you at a disadvantage, guilt by association.
Keep looking and applying for every job that says OPs in the title and you are bound to come up with something. I share your pain.
Keystrokes [2008-08-13]
Does Keystrokes have any line incentive if you go over a certain number of lines? I was offered a position but told by the recruiter that they do not; but she seemed unsure about a lot of things so thought I would ask people who work there. Also, when I asked about overtime, I was told that occasionally you might get asked to work overtime and then they would pay OT but normally not. If you work beyond your eight hours you just get the regular pay per line (not time-and-a-half) and that they don't really want you to do this, but rather stick to your eight hours. I do not understand how people say they can make so much money at Keystrokes with no incentives, no OT, raises???
My 2 cents [2008-08-13]
>wish you luck, but I'm afraid you will be sadly disappointed, perhaps not right away, but given enough time, if you go to work for them.<
This could be said of every transcription company out there. I don't work for focus, nor have I worked for focus, but I think you just have to take every comment with a grain of salt. Ive yet to see any one company not complained about by someone at some point on this forum. Just my 2 cents.
Medivoxx [2008-08-13]
The application requires the applicant to fill in compensation desired (be specific). I was receiving 6.5 cents per line. The lines were not character driven but rather carriage return determined.I know I would make a lot less at this rate with a character driven line so I would want to ask higher than that, and I do know there is usually a different rate for editing. Can you tell me what the going rates are for each type of transcription, and what I should realistically put here. Any guidelines would be appreciated.
DeVenture [2008-08-12]
Has anybody had any experiece with this company? They just offered me 9 cpl to start if I do 175 lph.
My experience [2008-08-12]
I will say when I firstbegan, I almost quit within the first 2 months. I had actually given my notice and let them talk me into staying. My main complaint was with one particular QA person there. She was very snippy, rude and condescending. They even offered to change me off the account to go under a different QA, but in doing so, meant I would be changing supervisors. I LOVED my supervisor and I also told them that if I stayed, I wanted to stay with my account because I would be darned if I would let a QA person run me off. So, I stayed. I lasted for about 6 months and ONLY left because I had a better job offer with way better benefits which were cheaper for me.
If something happened with this job and I knew they would have me back at Amphion, I would go. But, the place is definitely not for the faint of heart. There are A LOT of account specs you are expected to basically memorize. I had over 28 pages of account specs for ONE account. In addition to about 5 other accounts I was working on as well. Some accounts required you put in a lot of extra demographic information. Luckily, with my main account I did not have to do so.
As with any job, some people will love it, some will hate it. I happened to be one who hated it and then ended up really liking it and was treated fairly by my supervisor and the operations manager. I was offered to be a mentor there. If you have any questions, please feel free to e-mail me.
Good luck to you!
Big Decision [2008-08-12]
I have to choose between two job offers (both employee positions). One company I know a lot about. The other is Keystrokes. Have been offered one account, a hospital, at .08 cpl on a Chartscript platform that I've never used. Have been told that there are no normals or templates either. While the people seem nice, the benefits do not seem so great. For example, only 5 days of PTO after one year. Do they give paid holidays (and if so how many)?. Also, was told there were no line incentives (over the required 1200 minimum), and if you were allowed to work beyond the eight hours it would probably be at the same line rate (no incentives, no OT). It does not sound like they are offering anything that great and yet so many people say they love Keystrokes. I would like to understand: 1. Why so many Keystrokes employees love the company. 2. Is Chartscript a good platform to use. 3. Can I use the ShortHand word Expander with Chartscript? 4. When people say they make good money at Keystrokes, what is considered good? Any info would be greatly appreciated.
I do not know [2008-08-12]
I was offered a position with them and I declined due to reasons of my own. It was nothing against MD-IT per se because I have heard they are a very good company to work for. It was through a MTSO that merged with MD-IT, who I did not trust as far as I could throw them. Anyway, the offered me statutory status if I wanted it.
contracts [2008-08-10]
Anybody have this experience? I was just offered work from a company that sounded wonderful, just what I needed. No set schedule, work anytime, just set number of lines. Then I got the contract which stated basically paid on the 15th and 30th assuming payment received from client. What? I should do the work for their business and then they don't have to pay me until their client pays, if their client pays. I don't think so. The contract obviously precludes the MT from contacting the client so how do I know if the MTSO got paid or not or when they got paid. Just looking for other people's thoughts on this. Am I being paranoid? Have you ever been asked to sign such a contract? I have seen many postings on this board about people not being paid, and I do not want to be in that situation. I do the work for XXX Company. Doesn't XXX company owe me that money either way. I feel it is their responsibility to pay for work done for their company and THEN deal with the client for any nonpayment issues. What do you think? I politely told them I could not sign the contract with that statement included and asked them to reconsider their position, explaining my feelings on the subject.
no worries [2008-08-10]
I think I know what company you are talking about, as I have the same contract. I also questioned it when I was offered the position, and the response was, As far as the statement for payment providing receipt from client, this has NEVER been an issue and I do not expect it will ever be – which is, in fact, the reason for the waiting period before the first check, because they pay on a monthly basis. I have been with this company since November 2007 and there HAS NEVER been this problem. Direct deposit is available, I think it's aftertrial period. This company has been GREAT to work for and is growing rapidly. There is plenty of work and you're right, it is the perfect job. No set hours, 500 line requirement, and a great owner. You would be missing out if you turned it down.
The Problem Is.... [2008-08-09]
not the services - it's the hospitals and the economy. Whereas they used to make 10-15 cents/line on everything their MTs did, that margin is down to 2-5 cents. If you chose to work for a service, you have to realize there is overhead involved, systems to maintain, QA to pay, etc., etc. Services are NOT making a killing anymore.
If you don't like what the services offer for your experience, get your own clients and skip the middle man. You'll make MUCH better money.
If you look in the archives you'll find several [2008-08-09]
posts regarding problems with getting paid. They don't pay that well to start with. I have 20 years of experience and they offered me 8 cpl. I don't know anything else about them, but the payment issue would be enough for me to stay away.
Perhaps writing the letter boosted her self-esteem, which [2008-08-09]
obviously she felt was lacking due to the reasons expressed in her note. Writing something down, such as in a diary, can do wonders to boost the self-esteem. Re-read her post; honor, (dignity), self-esteem. I don't blame anyone, especially oldtimers, being p'od about being offered a piddlin wage after decades of hard work employed as a MT. It is belittling to accept the wages that are being offered now. I'm glad she wrote it and got it off her chest. HOPEFULLY, she is feeling much better about herself. NO JOB is worth become depressed over; which is where I think this poster was headed if she had not expressed her feelings in writing, and on a board such as this. I applaud her.
