T-C Transcription out of Florida - not Transcend [2008-09-24]
I can do about 250-300 lph, and I have the feeling I'm on some of the slower accounts, just looking over the normals and whatnot on the others. So it's a good deal all around. Not sure if they're hiring right now or not, though. Sorry.

Now they're telling me that the pay dates are 4th and 20th of the month, so my check won't even be mailed until today and I have stuff bouncing all over the place!!!!!

What happened to common sense? [2008-10-10]
When will common sense be introduced into the picture? Why are MTs blamed for a sick system? When will doctors and other dictating 'professionals' stop being regarded as Gods? When I was working as a nurse, many of the doctors were quite reasonable, while othershad to be put in their place. However, none of them could read our minds, and many did have to be properly informed that improvement was needed. For instance, back then, we needed to inform those with poor handwriting that hospital privileges would be revoked if they chose to not improve.Nowadays, I really believe that some of these dictators are never confronted. The client and MTSO put up with it and pass the stress on to the MT, with the MT then being graded with subsequent decrease in hourly production and hourly production pay. Does this make any sense? It seems pretty clear to me that the sad state of affairs regarding quality has everything to do with spoiling the dictators/clients and abusing the MTs with requirements for production OR ELSE!! What quality of reports do companies think they are going to get when they combine a stressed out MT with a mumbling, stumbling dictator? It seems to me that the problems are at the source. Isn't this obvious to everyone? How dare they apply a QA review process to the MTs, but not to the dictators? In such cases, it is simply unfair to pay on production. At the very least, if we have to be paid on production, there should be an additional hazard fee for difficult dictators, a fee that is passed on to the client and paid to the MT. I know this would be difficult to enforce, because there will always be another MTSO ready to take over the account and spoil the client, offshore or onshore. It's too bad that an MTSO and client cannot have some kind of binding 'forever' contract, only to be broken in the case of extremely negligent service. I like VR because it often provides clues whenever the dictator is subpar. Also, it has been part of my experience from the beginning. It may not have been as easy to accept if I had been doing straight transcription for many years prior to VR. It'sdifficult to use my Expander with the VR reports. On the other hand, when the doctor speaks clearly and does not slow me up by such things as mentioning the names of consultants, which I cannot confirm no matter where I search, I am able to produce more lines on VR than on straight typing. My best VR hour so far has been635 lines, but that was with a very clear doctor, and he was familiar to the VR system. I do edit VR word by word and my QA quality exceeds 99.5%.

It is the attitude of newer MTs (not all) such as yourself that cause these problems. sm [2008-10-10]
Companies do not treat us like sweatshops, hounding us for production. They expect us to be professionals and perform the work at the times we are scheduled, without exception, and produce a certain amount of work. Those production standards have actually gone down over the past 20 years, and our tools to produce more have gone up substantially. Decent wage? While our pay has not gone up in the past 10 years, $45,000 - $50,000 per year is still more than decent. Time to get up to speed? Court reporter are required to be at certain speeds to progress to the next level when they are in school and when they take their state boards to be certified, they are required to be a certain speed. FYI: That speed is the equivalent of 125 wpm with 100% accuracy required. There is no time to increase; this is their starting point. I teach at a local business school part time that also teaches court reporting. More than 75% of the ones who start court reporting cannot get up to speed or cannot take the pressure, so they either quit entirely or TRANSFER TO MEDICAL TRANSCRIPTION because the standards are not as high. For those that make it through the court reporting program, it can take 3 or 4 times to pass the state boards and only 50% actually do so. So, we need to look at what we complain about. The standards to be a medical transcriptionist, a professional responsible for a direct line of patient care, are quite low compared to other fields. Part of this is due to new MTs who come into the field to make a quick buck and to work at home while acting like stay-at-home moms.

THOSE THAN CAN DO, THOSE THAT CAN'T, TEACH..SM [2008-10-10]
So those that can't cut it in Court Reporting go into medical transcription because MT standards are lower, but where a $45-$50,000 salary is the norm? Where we're treated wonderfully, we're expected to be glued to our seats during out shift while we're not paid for that time, where often no work exists during that time and we are expected to make up our line quotas (of course, we owe these lines to the company on a pre-existing basis) on our own time later?Wonderful! I could go on and on, but you probably wouldn't get it if you tried. I don't know what field you're in besides teaching, but it's not medical transcription.

I transcribe FT and teach PT because I WANT to share my knowledge and experience with sm [2008-10-10]
others getting into this line of work. If you do not make $45,000 to $50,000 in transcription, you either are not very good or not very dedicated. It is easy and I do that in 6 hours a day with a 30-minute lunch.

You Missed My Point [2008-10-09]
I think you missed the point of my post. I would not have been upset had I tested and interviewed with SoftScript and then been turned down. But I received the nasty email ripping into me, accusing me of being mad because I was turned down, when I reality I had never even had a chance to test or interview. The email stated specificstopics that were discussed, butI never had that discussion with anyone at SoftScript. I think they had me confused with another applicant. That was what upset me. The recruiter did make a very bad impression with her jumping to conclusions. I am a good MT with almost 20 years experience in acute care transcription. To be told that my verbal and written grammar skills are substandard makes it sound like I'm illiterate. I do accept criticism when it is given fairly and is constructive. But I should at least be given the chance to fail, instead of just being told I failed without even being given a fair chance.

I hate it and I am making about $200 bucks less a month. sm [2008-10-09]
I miss doing straight transcription, but I can't find any companies with steady work doing straight transcription. I am forced to do VR now and am making about 200 bucks less a month on eScription platform.

Recession proof job [2008-10-09]
In these uncertain times, just curious how everyone sees the outlook of an MT? With voice recognition, how do you see the job market in 10 years? I am an instructor at a local small community college that teaches basic transcription and this is a topic of discussion. Any help would be appreciated!

WORDS OF WISDOM [2008-10-08]
To all you hard working MTs out there. I've been in the business too long not to have learned something. I still have not found a decent, honest and fair MT company and this is after 20 years. They require tons of qualifications out of you but in return what do you get? I don't trust ANYof them! They'rein it for the quick buck and don't give a rat's ass about you. I long for the those old days when hospitals had their own transcription departments and MTs had benefits and some security. The MT companies now want you to have all this bunch of equipment, each has their own software (this drives me crazy), they expect atthe very least 98% accuracy, fast transcription, and want you to stay put at your chair all dayIN CASE work comes pouring in. They want you to have your own books, your own C-Phone, unlimited long distance, high speed internet, etc. Why don'tYOU demand the same things they expect of you? We all know doctors hate to dictate because there's no money to be made there. The archive departments have to get on their backs every month, so, they come in and dictate a ton of chartsand you can't understand a frickinword they're saying and God forbid the ESLs...but you see, the company you're working for doesn't care and the doctors don't care. You need to hold these companies at much greater standards than you do now. Affirm yourselves, question them, get it in writing, and don't take less than whatyou believe you're worth! Stand up to them for once, and you'll stop this abuse. After all, it isyour life and your revenues are as important as theirs. Report them to everyone you can. They are not honest and have no integrity although they will try to convince you that working for them will be the greatest thing that happened to you. C'mon....wake up girls!Stand up and tell them that we are not going to take this anymore. If docs can't talk or write, and the companies know this, they'll shove it on to you...yes, you at home, working soooooo hard to do a good job.....I'm out of this now and will never go back because to home working because THEYcan't pass MYtest! Love you all but please wake up! Monique

LOL - In reading the old posts it seems [2008-10-06]
Sorry if I don't share your enthusiasm but you said the same thing last time and the invoice never arrived, nor did the direct deposit. How much do they pay you to field the questions? The transcription director (who by the way I bet is about 12 years old judging by her vocabulary) might consider worrying about payroll and not sending out cute pictures and email forwards. I agree with the other poster - too much of this and is very unprofessional.

Curious [2008-10-06]
So that is the name of the company, Toth Transcription? Have they posted on this site? Right now I amlooking for work, and have been applying all over, just wanted to make sure I did not apply to them. Thanks for the heads up

If you like to be spoken to like [2008-10-06]
supervised by people that have no transcription experience then go for it. I knew by my second month they were in over their heads. They have the worst platform and dictators but I think that's all they are capable of getting. I lasted just over 60 days and knew that was enough for me. They also have QA people who are not even MTs by the looks of it.

I had the exact opposite experience! [2008-10-05]
I was recently contacted by a SoftScript recruiter as a result of my resume posted on this site. She informed me that I seemed perfectly suited for an acute care (Big 4) position, even though my resume makes it clear that my experience and interest lies in clinical transcription and editing, not acute care!

Well, then I come to this board to get both sides of the story [2008-10-04]
and I appreciate hearing your experience. The best thing for me to do is be aware of this, keep working at my old IC job, and try this one out. If I see what you are saying, then it simply will not work out for me. What I have to decide about though is do I need the stress of even trying. It has been a bad year in transcription and I am not in the mood for many more of these types of games. Simply put. So do appreciate your feedback and I probably should have just stuck with the IC I have and increase the work load. Now I have to go through this trying out a job again, and ugggg, what a pain in the neck!

nice idea [2008-10-04]
What tropical islands do they offshore transcription to? I used to work for a Filipino doctor that was building his retirement home on the side of a mountain in the Philippines. He had already put up an electric fence to keep out the natives. If he can't feel safe in his own country, what kind of a chance does a foreigner have? When they offshore to St. Thomas, let me know and I'll be the first to sign up!

Orthopedics [2008-10-04]
Would like orthopedic transcription does anyone know of any company looking for this?

What I like best about the name, 'Typed - (sm) [2008-10-03]
in the U.S.A.', is how much it says, just sitting there by itself. Imagine it on letterhead. Or a business card. Or JAMA advertisement for MT services. Just that name alone, without one word from you or anyone else, thumbs its nose at 3rd-rate offshore transcription, and at the cheapskates who think saving a couple cents per line on transcription is somehow best for their hospital's bottom line, and somehow doesn't affect patient care. (Not to mention the medicolegal ramifications of underpaid offshore sweatshop labor, and how badly it can muck up a patient's medicl record.) Yes, I think a simple thing like 'Typed in the U.S.A.' manages to both advertise quality, and point out poor quality in others, without ever actually coming out and saying so.

Who can transcribe 5000 lines/day? [2008-10-03]
I have read on here that some of you can transcribe 300 or more lines per hour, which means it would take you around 16 hours a day!!I do not think there is anyone out there that can transcribe 5000 lines a day. He either means 500/day or 5000/week I assume. Has anyone ever heard of this company or know who this Timothy Olyphant is? What do you think of this job offer? It says transcription project. I would appreciate any info and your opinions. Thanks

You know, it occurred for me to retire to one [2008-10-03]
of these off-shore places. Keep my dual citizenship. Live large on a tropical island, continue doing transcription and get the good work. Seriously. I'd make so much more over there for the cost of living and then, I could finally make ends meet... What do you say, a bunch of us can infiltrate these places in the offices on the other islands, and then we'd have USA Transcriptionist as the offshore labor? No? Hmmm. Just a thought. LOL.

I don't know... [2008-10-03]
You have good intentions and all, but I think if you spend the $$ necessary to start this project, you will end up losing money and/or going belly up. Hospitals and doctors just aren't willing to pay what they used to pay, and that's been the trend for a decade or more. They will contract with the lowest bidder. If that doesn't work out, they'll find the next service willing to work for beans. Accordingly, if that one doesn't work out, they'll find the next one...and so on. There are plenty of services out there willing to work for peanuts and pay their MTs the shells, and that's just the way it is. Remember, I'm playing devil's advocate....Why would a hospital or group of doctors pay premium wage to a transcription service when there are hundreds (thousands?) of services who will do it for cheap, not to mention offshore to India. The MTSOs who were/are transcriptionists themselves understand our plight, and the ones not willing to pay slave wages have since gone under or sold out. It's a dying industry for the little guy. I admire your drive and motivation, but perhaps you could channel that into a different type of business that hasn't been ruined by corporate greed or offshore outsourcing. Just a thought, but maybe general transcription would be a better idea, though I'm not too familiar with the general transcription industry and have no idea if those companies are being swallowed up or will be swallowed up eventually the same way. Anyway, just something to think about. I wish you luck in whatever you choose to do :)

Very possibly [2008-10-03]
Nothing is 100% sure of course. But some transcriptioncompanies are already doing this, charging more and offering quality and doing very well, especially in specialty fields. They don't advertise as much because they have lower turn over but we know who they are. I will bet that because of increasing lawsuits and liability, hospitals are going to be a lot more carefulabout what becomes part of a patient's medical record. And who has access to it. As the economy gets worse, the big companies are going to cut corners more and more trying to squeeze more money out the business. They probably won't even want to be bothered when their profits go down and cut into their big CEO paychecks. First there was a glut of nurses because the hospitals didn't want to pay them. Now there is a shortage and they are going nuts trying to recruit them. There are cycles in business. I don't want to become a mllionaire. Justmake a decent living for myself and some other transcriptionist. As I said, some companies are already doing this.

STARTING A COMPANY [2008-10-03]
I read your post and followups. I too, at one time, considered starting my own transcription business. If you get your business off the ground, contact me. Here's anothersuggestion for a company name. TransUSA Medical Documentation

This comment annoyed me...sm [2008-10-02]
Our transcriptionists do not work from home. We believe medical transcription is a serious business that demands professionalism. They make it sound like MTs that work from home are not professional as opposed to those that work in an office. I don't think so, darlings. I much prefer working from home rather than admidst the pecking hens and gossipy environment I used to be in, which felt like high school again.
