computer [2008-10-08]
Call tech support at 1-800-dictate. If they can help the problem they will over the phone, otherwise they will send you one right away, and will have it in less than 24 hours, no questions. and you just send the old one back in the same box, free of charge.
I had 3 of them within 4 years, and they had absolutely no problems replacing it. In fact there is probably a new and updated one by now if yours is that old and will replace it.
MQ computer [2008-10-08]
You don't have to transfer them. Everytime you log into DQ they're downloaded from your user profile.
Computer return question [2008-08-15]
Did you have a computer to return? What department do we contact to find out how to do this? I'm giving my notice tomorrow when I call my supervisor. She emailed me to call her in the a.m. and I feel a chewing-out coming as I was short on my lines per hour last pay period. That's okay, was going to quit anyway after 10 years. It was time.
Do they give you computer? [2008-08-08]

Problem is new job meant new computer. [2008-08-08]
Windows Easy File Transfer needs to drop the Easy and make it Windows Complex File Transfer or Windows Just Might Do A File Transfer. Nothing easy about it.
Thanks for the info though. :)
employer's computer [2008-07-30]
You are an MQ employee and the computer supplied is their equipment, and, as with any employer's equipment, it is to be used only for the employer's business. Technically, since we are employees and not IC, the employer should provide the equipment. Working on an MQ computer is just like going into the hospital to work when it comes to equipment.
Fortunately, we have the choice of using our own computer which I like. Using my own computer, I can have it operating in the manner I like.
The hospital I used to work for requires telecommuters to use their supplied computer which is a piece of tin. My friend, who still works for that hospital, just has a switch so she can do the work on the hospital's computer and then switch over to her personal computer for any 'net surfing, game playing or any other personal tasks.
I have used a switch before and it is easy and they are cheap. All it is is a cable which connects the two computers to one keyboard, mouse and monitor and a switch. Push a button and you are on one computer, push another button and you are back on the other computer. It is an easy solution to keeping a work computer and personal computer separate with only the additional space of another tower rather than a whole system.
Buying computer for $125 [2008-07-30]
40 gig, second hand. Like I said, Medquist, I only need time to pack.
Here's what I don't understand about the computer... [2008-07-30]
I have one lone computer and it belongs to MQ, I've had it for about two years now. It's the only computer I own because I wouldn't even have ROOM for another computer if I wanted it! I live in a tiny, tiny house and type on a corner kitchen table. We push it out of the way to eat every evening. I don't know where else I would set up a computer even if I wanted to!
So are you saying I now can't check my email, play solitaire when I need a break from the kids (the only break I get by the way), and check my bank balance?
Does this mean I have to drive to the library every day to check my personal email? The library is 7 miles away, meaning that's going to be a lot of gas..
Sigh........
Do you think they'll know if we're checking our private email or playing solitaire on the computer? Or Pogo?
Sad tonight..........
Maybe it is the computer. I am serious. [2008-07-30]
I cannot get into the website. I even went to google. Typed in Medquist. Went to top of page and clicked on news. It brought up Magnum Opus and I clicked on that and I only get a log in. You actually got in and can read the full article?
It is my MQ computer. I can get in with my daughter's computer, but not MQ computer.nm [2008-07-30]

Can't use computer for personal? Where's my router? [2008-07-29]
This company has just picked up the feather and placed it on the camel's back.
It's bad enough they don't understand the business. Now they are getting to be control freaks. If I have to go buy another computer to get my e-mail with, I quit.
computer usage?? [2008-07-28]
Would I get in trouble if I loaded pictures or a picture programonto my MQ computer?
My home computer went down and it will probably be a while before we get a new one and I wanted to have some pics printed. Just wondered if we would get in trouble for that? I would have to load in my pic program, load the pics, then I'd probably take it out afterwards....
Funny - about your friend still having MQ computer [2008-07-28]
I quit at the end of April and still have the MQ computer. I like using it better than mine cuz they gave me 1 of the nice flat screen monitors. I got my first set of shipping labels in June (2 months after I quit) to send it back. Then a couple of weeks ago, MQ calls me to tell me they haven't received my computer yet and where is it? I told them I didn't get the shipping labels and to resend them. It's now the end of July and I have no intention of sending this thing back until the end of summer. It's too hard with the kids home from school for everyone to get *computer time* with only 1 computer. So I figure MQ can have this thing back when I'm ready to send it - when school starts back up!
I stay to do minimum work while using MQ computer. [2008-07-11]
My full time job and loyalty is with another MT company. I stayed with MQ to see if they would come to their senses and realize what a mess they have made as far as maintaining quality in a cesspool of work where MQMTs fight to even make minimum wage while reading client profiles and deal with unfamiliar accounts, dialects, doctors, specialties. I have now gotten to the point if MQ doesn't care about quality neither do I. So I work my minimum MQ flex time to maintain use of their computer and make a little money on down-time when I am not working my other job and I give MQ the quality of work equivalant to my pay cuts, ASR, and cesspool.
So far no one has complained. Guess they are too busy thinking up new job titles and how to give themselves bonuses.
Do you use MQ's computer for the other job? Aren't you [2008-07-11]
afraid you're going to get into some trouble?
Buy a new computer [2008-06-13]
I would never buy a computer from MQ - unless you want them to continue to be able to monitor every key stroke and site you visit. Any new company should be able to provide you with the software you need to do their job. Not to mention the fact that even if they did sell it, they would be making more profit off of you than they already do as an employee. Sever the tie and buy a personal computer that is yours and yours alone.
Does MQ ever sell you their computer? I have one [2008-06-10]
of their computers but will be starting a new job soon. I'd really like to just keep this computer; it has a lot of my software on it. Do you think they'd sell it to me? I'll ask them eventually but wanted to get some ideas if they even do that. If not, I'm not sure what Ill do yet. I realize I can't work two jobs on the MQ computer, though I wish I could. THX
another plus to buy a self built computer [2008-06-08]
I was asked if I wanted XP or vista and I was like heck no I don't want Vista!!!!
What I did for a computer - [2008-06-07]
It's probably not the most ethical thing, but I don't think too highly of MQ's ethics, either. When I took a new job a few months back, I had 2 computers. I liked MQ's computer better b/c it was faster and it was a flat screen. I also have kids who liked playing on our personal computer when I was working.
During my transition months, I worked on my PC for my new job and MQ for MQ. I finally gave MQ my notice a month ago. I continued using my PC for a week or 2, thinking I would hear something from MQ soon about sending back their computer. After 2 weeks of nothing, I figured the heck with it. They didn't care about me anymore than they did about their computer, so I just decided to use it for my new job. It's been a month now and I just got the paperwork from MQ to send back their computer. Of course, I'm going to send it back this week, but I don't feel guilt over using their computer for my new job for the last month or so.
So, I say if you need to use their computer, then use it. The worst that can happen is they fire you for misuse of company property, which I doubt they would because I don't think they watch the computer usage that closely.
For those who want to bash me for my ethics, go right ahead. You won't bother me one bit. MQ hasn't cared about us for the last 2 years or so and I'm not going to lose sleep over them.
I use it all the time as well since it's my only computer. [2008-06-03]
My personal computer died about 5 years ago and I was desperate. I really didn't want to rent a computer from them, but really needed to be able to rely on them if the system went down for some reason so I could always work (my husband was in the Middle East/military at the time and I had no one to help me if things went down, 'cause I'm a computer idiot). Anyway it was a Godsend.
I've used their computer ever since and it's my lifeline to the world. It's all I've got. And if they were monitoring it, I'd be screwed.
Is it a policy about having a 2nd job or using their computer? [2008-05-09]

The computer nm [2008-05-09]
and why do they call it a computer anyway? No one uses it to compute.
I just ordered a new computer and my take on sm [2008-04-29]
Microsoft works is that it has WordPerfect.
I ended up getting Office Home and Student edition (I think that is what they called it, I don't have my computer yet), so that I would get Microsoft word.
I hope this helps.
my built-in computer tech said to move to vault since it won't let me heal it. nm [2008-04-24]

They never picked on me [2008-10-10]
In fact for several years after they took over, when they still had regional offices, I used to work only 6-1/2 hours a day. I did 1200 lines a day and hung up. My supervisor at the time didn't care. Granted, I was cranking it during those 6-1/2 hours, more or less. Back then we sent in our time cards by mail or filled them out in advance, it was loose.
Okay, so when they got rid of the regional offices and had the online time clock, yes I had to sit there during working hours. Actually I went through a period where I decided (before ASR) to really make money and worked liked a banshee for about a year, paying off bills, taking a vacation to Europe, really surprising myself with how much I could do.
Then came ASR, and I found myself surfing the web all day between reports. I was just too p.o.'d to get into it anymore. I couldn't make money like before, and I couldn't do the minimum and hang up. And then when they started saying their computer could only be used for work, I really got irritated and I quit. Now I work somewhere with no ASR, no time clock and I'm back to really working again.
If you let Medquist make your life miserable, you'll be miserable. Medquist is a terribly flawed company without any prospects if they don't manage to get their slave shop working in India. I recommend you quit. You'll be doing yourself and the craft of transcription a favor.
ditto - except mine is my right ulnar area [2008-10-09]
I use my right hand for the Ctl-arrow to move through document.
I am now wearing an Ace wrap under my Softflex gloves. This helps some, as it makes me move my forearm and not just the wrist a bit more.
:(
Told my hubby to be prepared -- when (if I ever do) retire, I will be blind from the computer screen, deaf from the headphones and won't be able to use my fingers because they will be knarled over from keyboarding so much! LOL
It's all their business [2008-10-09]
When your logged on to work with any computer, your time is being tracked for how long you are on each report, when you are tabbed out of DQS (IE Google searching), errors, QA markers.....yes, everything is being gathered and stored, and yes, it can come back to bite you in the butt.
Anyone with MQ equipment? [2008-10-08]
I have had my MQ computer now for almost 3 years. It is increasingly acting weird and slow, and I was wondering when it should be replaced? I would appreciate any input. Also, what is the protocol for replacement? Thanks in advance!!
suggestion SM [2008-10-08]
Do you do disk cleanups on a regular basis? If not, that can slow your computer down.
I have called Support in the past when my computer was slow, and they had helpful suggestions that worked for me, so you might want to try calling them.
THANKS!! One more question . . [2008-10-08]
Yes, I do all my usual maintenance religiously, but I think it has just seen its better days.
If I get a new computer, will I be able to transfer my word expander? Please tell me I don't have to start all over!!
I was afraid of that too, [2008-10-08]
when my new computer arrived, I was afraid that I would have to start all over from scratch. When I logged onto DQS for the first time, my Expander came up without any problems, which was kind of freaky!
I'm not sure if tech puts it in when they make up the computer, or if when you log onto DQS with your password all of your files automatically load onto any computer? All I know is that I am thankful it carried over!
ASR [2008-10-07]
It isn't too bad when you get someone you and/or the computer software can understand. Today, mine has been all ESL who feel they have to fly through their dictations. There are a lot of blanks being left as I, for the life of me, cannot make heads or tails out of what they are trying to say. Again, where is the transcription?
I have been thinking about it too. There is a new Mickey D's down the street. WHAT a shame, that this profession, or especially this company had to make it so hard for us, who do the work.
The usual [2008-09-30]
Medquist management ruined the company for me.
The failure of ASR, the cut in pay.
Also, having a Medquist computer in my house was like inviting Big Brother to live with me. After the official ruling came down that we were only to use it for work, it gave me the creeps.
We don't have a union. AAMT is a joke. The only way to show my real feelings was to quit. So I did.
DQS problem, can anyone help? [2008-09-30]
Driving me nuts. I somehow managed to do something to my version of DQS. Whenever I type punctuation and then hit the space bar, my cursor advances 5 complete spaces, 10 with a double space after a period. It also does this when using numbers in text. What did I do here? I've rebooted, changed keyboards and then rebooted again, still the same thing. It's not doing it with E-mail or the internet, so I know it's not my computer or either keyboard. Just shoot me!!! Anyone???
There is a creepy feeling about Medquist [2008-09-28]
You know, one of the things I liked best about transcription was a feeling of personal responsibility and a feeling my effort would result in a reward.
For the last 2 months before I quit Medquist, I felt like I was in George Orwell's 1984. Even using their computer gave me the creeps. It made me feel I was in a prison with guards watching me. Plus they were paying me less. It was so strange. I have been transcribing 20 years, and really the only time I ever felt something like this weird feeling was a long time ago when I did a temporary job at a Japanese company in LA where we all sat at word processors like cows on feed and a bell used to ring like in school to tell you when to start and stop.
I honestly believe Medquist management has gone insane. This may be because somehow they believe the computer can do what we do. I imagine they will convince investors of this for a while, but ultimately it will flame out and fall into the sea.
I quit. I'm glad I did. I can't say it's a lot easier anywhere else, but it is saner.
Etime [2008-09-28]
Any notice a difference between etime and your MQ computer. They are synchronized on punch-in for the day, but when you log-on to punch-out, Etime is minutes behind. Seems as if MQ trying to cheat us out of pay. Doesn't seem like much, but multiple it times 365 days/year. It adds up to be a lot.
On questioning DICTATE, they suggest to synchronize MQ computer, which I have done, which still has etime lagging minutes.
It's an ADP problem which is a [2008-09-28]
separate company from MQ. It's not MQ trying to rip you off.
I have noticed the ETime to be about 2 minutes behind the clock on my computer, and I have even synced my computer with atomic clock. I have noticed that the ETime clock tends to drift over time, and every once in a while, ADP syncs their clock.
I have never noticed a difference between my time stamp and the time shown on ETime when I punched in. I check every punch I make to be sure the punch was registered.
Vista - McAfee problem [2008-09-26]
Anybody try to download McAfee from QNET to a Vista computer? It will not download onto my laptop with Vista. Tech support doesn't know what to do. Anybody else have any ideas?
I had one who [2008-09-26]
had someone laughing at her in the background and she said to me I like you, I talk to you every day and you don't laugh at me.
Another one talks to me all the time, like this is a long one, but we can get through it together, or sorry for the pauses, this computer is really !#@! up today, or my favorite, thank you so much for typing this for me, have a good day.
These dictators really make a bad day better.

There's always the other side of the slice of cheese, no matter how you slice it. Her husband was not an American Citizen. What was her real motive for snitching?
During her interview, SUSAN PURDUE: My office was in the computer file server room. We had computers generating heat and they turned off my air conditioning. During the summer it was 100 degrees in there.
RESPONSE: I don't know about the rest of the story, but this line certainly sounds bogus, I can't see any server room running very long without A/C and at a 100 degrees, those servers in there would have been down in a matter of hours from overheating. So if someone fudges the truth over a small matter like this to enhance her victimhood, I would take the rest of her story with a grain of salt too.
Why did the FBI do nothing? Maybe there was nothing to do, if as she claims these files were coming in from overseas there would be some record either e-mail, or network logs, backup logs etc. I'm always cynical of the 'disgruntled' employee's version of events, ala Clarke and 9/11.

All the higher ups in hospitals care about is [2008-09-24]
the bottom cash line and not accuracy or safety of medical records. Only if doctors actually read the transcription and take action will decisions be made by the higher ups based on other important factors such as quality.
At a hospital I worked at in the past, some doctors complained about the transcription. Although, the only thing that really came of it was that those doctor's dictation was not sent off shore.
At that hospital, one of my ex co-worker says the doctors have gone on strike right now and are not completing records because they WANT it transcribed and refuse to use the computer only system where they have to enter everything themselves and/or only have limited options to chose and click.

I have to say one thing here... [2008-09-20]
This strikes so close to home! You know, I still don't have a cell phone. I hate phones for the most part.
I hate computers, and I think that will never, ever change. My kids fight over their computer and their PlayStation. I tell them how stupid that is on a daily basis. I am chained to my desk nowadays to work. If they were forced to do these things they would hate them too.
I'd sure ask them ... [2008-09-19]
exactly what the consequences will be if you don't work it.
If you are a valued employee with a good record, they might put you on probation or performance management, etc. So what?
As badly as they need people, I doubt they would just outright fire you, especially if they know ahead of time.
Or better yet, ask them if you can take their computer with you to some unknown, unsecure location and work there? LOL
good luck to you.
and all of that above... [2008-09-19]
...i know is part of the job and iwould never complain about if i were getting paid by the hour, like those good old days we speak of. i always rose to the occasions, accepted the challenges, but when your livelihood depends on just being able to be a machine and crank out the lines, its like, argh!!!
yea, i didn't have a cell phone until 2 years ago...i was the last person i knew not addicted to their cells. i hate telephones and rarely use it, but its an evil necessity. i'm pretty low tech, still use my VCR!! i guess others would just call us OLD. haha!
i do love my computer and e-mail though, but even that is starting to get old. too much information is making us all a bit insane i think.
against Spheris code of conduct [2008-09-18]
I had interviewed with them a few years ago (maybe things have changed since then) and they told me if I worked for them I could not work for another transcription company, even on my own computer. I was looking for PT work to supplement my FT with MQ, so that pretty much shot me working for them.
Honestly, if you use your own computer who cares what you do with your spare time. Many people use their home computer for Tastefully Simple or Mary Kay or whatever. What is the difference with picking up a secondary MT job? Whatever it takes to make ends meet. You can always find ways to spend the extra money:)
Sphereis must have a exclusivity clause in [2008-09-18]
their contract. If they don't, they can't control you.
When I interviewed with Spheris, they sure seemed to demand and paid a lot less. As I recall, they wanted me to use their computer and pay for the equipment with reimbursement if I stuck with them for a certain period of time. Needless to say, I chose MQ over them, and I am not sorry about that choice.
part-time with another company? [2008-09-16]
I currently work for MQ as a full-time employee. Is it against the code of conduct to obtain another part-time job with another company to make ends meet? I wouldnot usethe MQ computer for the second job, obviously.I am pretty sureI will have to go do somethingelse beside MTing for a second job though, right?
I have also worked as an IC for another [2008-09-16]
company on my own computer. It is none of their business.
