Swift Text or cheaper expander info please [2008-08-29]
I was wondering if anyone uses Swift Text Expander or any other cheaper Expanders (if there are any). I am going to start doing some IC work besides my full-time job. I am going to be paid hourly but I would like an expander just because I am so used to using it now I would be lost withoutit. I currently use what is built into my work system now and do not any experience with others. I am only going to do this extra work minimally so didn't know if it would be worth investing in a more expensive expander or if I could get by with a cheaper one. Any info/ideas would be appreciated. Thanksin advance for any info.
Yes, it's a word expander--can be used with any program (not just DQS) [2008-08-27]

Word Expander for Word? [2008-08-22]
After years and years of using WP 5.1 we have switched to regular old word... i hate change but I know it's time.
The autotext in Word seems to be a bit... different. Does anyone have any helpful hints?
Now the fun part begins of adding in ALL the macros and shortcuts...
Expander-How to get the most [2008-08-20]
I have Instant Text word Expander and would like to know how to get the best results with using it. I do clinic work for multiple doctors. What settings should I use to get the most phrases and words so that I can type 600 lph? Thanks My bill collecters will thank you
chartscript [2008-08-20]
My company uses Chartscript right now and is fairly user friendly... we use Word/Stedman's and I have ShortHand abbre. progam, all work fine with it. You can check the patient's other records, which is a super feature and copy and paste if need be into the document. Why are they changing from Extext?... as I work for a 2nd company who is looking to have that installed...
expander [2008-08-19]
While it may not be necessary, it sure can help. Why type 10 Keystrokes when you can type 1? Plus it assists accuracy because once you enter something correctly, it will be correct every time you use it. A good Expander takes time to build, but if you add to it a little at a time, it will really pay off. Line counts go up significantly once you get comfortable with the expanders, and that just equates to money on your check and improved accuracy. If you could do 2000 lines a day without using one, why not do 3000 lines while using one while continuing to earn 8 hours of income?
word expander [2008-08-16]
I am freaking out. Setting this home thing up is the hardest thing I have ever done in my whole life. SoftScript does not automatically have a word expander. Where do I get one? I have Vista. How do I do this? Is there free ware? Can I just make a million macros in Word 2007? I want my word expander!!!!!!!!!!!
Word Expander [2008-08-16]
Shorthand for Windows has a 30-day trial of their software. Personally, I wouldn't be without my ShortHand program, it's wonderful!
PCShorthand has a PDF on-line manual you can purchase with a 30-day trial of the software for $14.95.
I have the time-limited license ($29.95 a yr) which allows me to receive program updates that you do not get with the non-expiring version at $99.
Here's the link: http://www.pcshorthand.com/
Here's the price list:

Hope this helps you and good luck at SS.

That would depend on which expander you got. See inside. [2008-08-10]

With expander and very familiar account SM [2008-08-10]
on a bad day where everything goes wrong maybe 4 hours. In the groove, less than 3.
I'm an experienced MT, a slowish typist but a fast reader and puctuator, use an Expander heavily, and have good (not great) familiarity with one account but not with my backup, and neither account is the kind of great fast one that helps you get in the groove and really knock the work out consistently.
Also, I have an expander... [2008-08-06]
As I said in my original post, it's the software my company uses that makes me have to do extra hours to put in 8 hours worth of lines by constantly freezing, kicking me off, etc.
Yes, invest in a better expander. It will be worth it. [2008-08-04]
text expander programs.... [2008-08-02]
Hi everyone. I have been an MT for 14 years and have never used a text Expander program. I've only used autocorrect for individual words and phrases and for years I used ExText and its ESP program. I'm looking at Instant Text, but I'm a little concerned about having to make the choices, etc and being distracted by the boxes. I type pretty fast and am wondering if it would actually slow me down. Does anyone have any thoughts, opinions?? Also - feel free to comment about other expander programs. Thanks.

Yes you can use Instant Text. Turn off DQS expander. Tech support can tell you how. [2008-07-29]
Call Instant Text and find out how to do this.
Word expander programs. [2008-07-14]
Is it worth it to purchase one of these? I was looking at Instant Text. Anyway, I have always just used the Expander (ESP) that came with Dictaphone Extext, plus ctrl-R (normals). I came from a hospital that would not allow us to add software to their PC, just what was already built in so I am not familiar to what is out there. I work for a national now and use my own computer. I was wondering if it is worth it to purchase Instant Text just stick with what I got. TIA.

ChartScript/Instant Text [2008-07-11]
Hi everyone. I am relatively new to both CS and IT. CS for about three weeks and IT for about 2 days. I'm trying to follow the manual but I am confused. I have linked CS to IT, but when I start typing in CS, the IT screen disappears, how do I fix this? Sorry I know this must be so basic, but obivously I've missed a step. Thanks for any help.

ChartScript/Instant Text [2008-07-11]
maybe I'm not linked correctly. but it seems to work when I am just in word. anyone please????
ChartScript/Instant Text [2008-07-11]
yes, I checked that box to link automatically. it works if I am in word but in CS it disappears from the screen. I hate this kind of stuff. :) thanks for you help.
ChartScript/Instant Text - actually [2008-07-11]
I don't think the auto link is working correctly. If I open up word I still have to open IT separately, but once I open it up the windows stays on the screen while I type.
ChartScript log in issue [2008-07-09]
My new job uses ChartScript. I am having issues logging in. Does anyone know who to call. I called my boss at the company I work through but thought I would see if anyone here could help me out in the mean time.
Thanks in advance

Bayscribe Question [2008-08-29]
I've been trying to enter bolded headings into my Expander but for some reason, it will not longer let me do that! It just BEEPS when I tried to click the CTR B to bold in the expander box. The ones I've established are there and work, but the new ones will only beep.
Ideas? THANKS!
is your caps lock on? [2008-08-29]
If so, it won't let you do anything in your expander.
Or try doing a copy and paste into your expander.
Not true [2008-08-26]
Sure it'll get better. You can make really good money being an acute care MT. The reports are longer, you can put full exams into your expander, put whole operative reports into your expander. You have to give yourself time to learn but I find acute care much more interesting than clinic notes. Good luck. If you have more questions or need help, you can e-mail me privately. Plus, what the other posters say about buying reference books is true. They have been a great help to me. I have collected reference books for the last 20 years and find them quicker to use than Google.

Look up AutoCorrect and AutoText in the help file. [2008-08-23]
They are two very different features. If you get confused, post back with your questions.
Since you're starting from scratch, you are far better off purchasing a true text Expander that works in all of your programs instead of the features that only work in Word. Instant Text will import entries from most any program and you can take it with you from platform to platform or any other program.
Conversion programs (see message) [2008-08-22]
If you have an Expander program for WP5.1 (DOS?), there might be conversion macros available on line that could import your list into AutoCorrect/Text with possibly some clean up required.Istill havemy old DOS PRD Productivity Plus that I used a few years ago and was able to convert it into ShortHand (currently use), which I have in turn imported into AutoC/T (and vice versa) when needed.
First off...sm [2008-08-21]
The one poster below me is right. There are normals and then there are expanders.
First...600 lines an hour in clinic is, in my opinion, not a possibility. Clinic has too many variables. It is not possible in every hour for acute care either, though I have done it a time or two, as in probably 4 hours of this entire year of 2008. Mostly, I do about 300 to 350 and I use Smart Type. I honestly believe that Word tops out at about 400 or slightly more. It won't go that fast, period. WP5.1 is another story and there, I was routinely at 400 lph with no normals in clinic, no less.
Expanders will give you more lines per hour. Properly used, they can also make a lot less work for your hands, allowing you to type longer hours. Without an expander, I burn at about 90 minutes. With Smart Type, I can type happily for 8 and be a bit sore for about 4 more (I work two jobs). An Expander CAN increase your accuracy, but I QA with a difficult account and I see expander errors too frequently to believe that this is always true for everyone.
I have about 20K abbreviations in my expander. I will tell you that I don't have many doctor-specific shortcuts. If I have more than one doctor who uses a given phrase, I'll add it, provided I can remember to use it. Mine are put into the expander in a way that doesn't demand I remember any of them, which is good because I can't remember them!
More faster is the goal, not a given rate per hour. Email with any questions.
Fellow struggler [2008-08-20]
I, too, struggle with my line count (though slowly growing).
I have a few accounts but ENDLESS dictators with one of them.
If I didn't use an Expander I would be toast. Between spelling, word/drug oddities, and making tons of various sentence expansions (to help conform to soooo many dictators), I feel there is no other way.
It is true it takes time but worth it ultimately.
Any knowledge you can gain as far as medical language would be a big plus too. That is another problem I have ... trying to retain the meanings of things to verify if they fit.
you need to use the mail merge feature or [2008-08-20]
put the addresses in your text expander, which is much easier.

My experience with expanders and clinic sm [2008-08-20]
work has been that they usually want things verbatim and nothing expanded so my Expander actually sometimes is more trouble than it's worth on this particular work type. Of course, it depends on your account specifics. It's probably good for physical exams and consistent phrases for particular dictators?
Meditech [2008-08-20]
Well, we interface to Meditech. Have you heard of chartscript interfacing with Meditech? Meditech is our EMR and that won't change, so we need something that works with it.
Dictaphone has been great, but it is super expensive. They make upgrades you need to buy and the system does not work well if you do not get the upgrades, plus they have the yearly contract fee for maintenance and they really are pretty slow and hard to get to help you with any problems, so we are looking around.
Speed comes with practice [2008-08-19]
It may take several months to reach 150 lph. I agree with the other poster that an Expander is not necessary. Fooling around with the expander to load in abbreviations takes a lot of time. In spite of what expander-sellers say, you can easily reach 2000 lines a day without an expander if you are efficient. MTs did it for years on typewriters.
When you have done enough dictation to begin recognizing that all doctors say the same things over and over, and when you can recognize those things in spite of individual doctor differences, you'll begin to fly. It's a matter of learning what they ought to be saying so that you can understand them.
It's also a matter of focus. If you are trying to load up an expander, eat, do laundry, do daycare, fool with pets, you will never make progress. If you keep checking IM, email, and answering the phone, you'll never make progress.
Good things take time. (this is addressed to OP, BTW) My first 15 years or sm [2008-08-19]
so of MT was without the benefit of using an expander. When Expanders became the norm, I was reluctant to try, thinking that it would be more cumbersome than by not using it at all. Was I surprised and pleased I had ventured into the Expander world.
Since you're at home you can add entries on your free time, even if you do 5 or 10 at a time, when there is no pressure on you. Start out with expanders for the patient, -year-old, the names of your doctors, anything that is repetitious. You will be surprised how much time this will save you. My initial expander, PRD, actually calculated saved Keystrokes and productivity. Back then I was saving 30%!
The expander is especially helpful for those crazy terms that are hyphenated or have camel caps, those that I always had to look up to check myself. Create your brief form by just using straight lowercase, for instance, duoneb for Duo-Neb (or d-n).
Speed will come, don't worry. Good luck to you!
(Posted in the wrong place--I always do that!) This is in response to OP.

Get Ditto [2008-08-17]
Ditto is a great Expander program. They have a basic version and they are currently beta testing the pro version, which I like very much. The basic Ditto 2.0 can be purchased right now for $24.00 at www.palabrio.com. I was able to import 3600 shortcuts from InScibe, which I use for my main client, and now I add entries as often as I like. It's tons easier to enter shortcuts than InScribe. You can try it 30 days free also, but I don't know how long it will be $24.00, so for that price I'd just give it a try for a day or two and buy it soon after. Good luck.

I agree. Emdat is not the worst (sm) [2008-08-09]
platform out there. As far as the dictionary issue, that is related to a setting - the wrong dictionary is probably set. Emdat has it's only internal expander function (similar to autotext). I too hated it initially but that was just the newness. Emdat tech support is very good as the other poster stated - you'll always have quick access to that if needed.
shorthand on a jump drive [2008-08-06]
I work for a company that utilizes Meditech with its horrible, cumbersome canned text. I downloaded and started using ShortHand and it was like a revelation, how much faster and more efficient. My output shot up at least 20%.
Now the company says I have to use their computer... won't let me download shorthand... and I've tried to use a jump drive, but that doesn't work. Technician tells me there have to be some files installed already on the computer for the Shorthand-via-jump-drive idea to work.
Does anyone have any ideas? I'm about to start working twice as hard for less money and the idea is unpalatable to say the least. I've gone into desperate mode.
TIA for any solutions, any other word Expander that'd work via a jump drive or whatever.
Instant Text works with Meditech..no need [2008-08-06]
to download anything as IT links to it. IMO, Instant Text is the best Expander on the market, much more flexible than anything else.
instant text [2008-08-06]
I have never used anything but the Expander built into the platform but have often thought about investing in instant text. I am wondering if anyone can tell me the advantage I might gain from use of it. Advice would be really appreciated. Thanks
