I forget where the downloaded files go, can't remember if you can put them where you want them but I would have to search for them to download to Express Scribe - maybe someone else can tell you how. It is much better than what you are doing.

Advice on free or cheap MT software, please [2008-08-10]
I need a software program similar to GearPlayer, free or cheap. Is there one that anyone can recommend? I want one that would work with the GearPlayer footpedal I have or with easy keyboard commands to start, stop, rewind, etc. I ran across a site months ago that had older versions of Stedman's spellchecker for $30 or so. If anyone knows that site, or one similar, please share that info, as well. I also need WordPerfect, as new a version as I can get, but as inexpensive as I can get, also. Thanks!

Express Scribe is a free player... [2008-08-10]
which lots of us use, just Google express scribe and you will be able to find plenty of sites ot download it from. For the other items you might try the classifieds right here on MTStars, ebay or Craigs list. Good luck!

Interesting Survey! [2008-07-25]
I hope I posted this in the right spot! Kind of new to this forum, especially with posting messages. I downloaded a medical transcription survey from 2007 from the MTIA web sitewhich I thought was very interesting and would like to share it with you all if you have not read it. I loved the summary point stating Doctors do not generate revenue, documents do. Accurate and complete healthcare documents are essential to a doctor's and institution's revenue cycle. I remain hopeful and optimistic that in the future that we will once again be recognized for how important our jobs really are. All of us can go out and get ourselves a medical secretarial position or other positions in the medical field, but it takes a special talent to do the job we do, and I think many people who think our jobs are not worth the money we deserve, possibly can't do OUR jobs. This is the link and if it does not work, go to the MTIA.com web site, search under press releases and it is the Bentley MT survey for 2007. Hope you find it interesting. http://www.mtia.com/Downloads/MTSurveyReport-Preliminary.pdf

I did comm. college and started in-house 2 months after I was done.... [2008-07-23]
try any local hospitals if you have some in your area. The hospital I worked at was the first and only place I applied and they hired me right away. I worked in-house for 3 years and have been at home for 3 years now. In-house taught me the ropes and then I decided to try at home, which has worked out well, even thought my supervisor said I would hate it. She was dead wrong! Keep trying...You can't expect to begin at home, it may take working outside first, such as I did...and I am glad for the in-house experience.

Also went to comm. college on a grant [2008-07-22]
and starting doing a paid internship before I graduated from the 9 month program. I was offered a FT job in-house doing acute care at a major hospital. I did well enough for 7 years that I continued my education to become a respiratory care practioner (where, by the way, I took an initial paycut).

Went to comm college also, had job before end of 1st semester at a multispecialty clinic... [2008-07-21]
I then went on to hospital/acute care work part-time (while still working at the clinic) and with that then on to to anational. The key is to find a place that will be willing to give you on-the-job training. It can be done.

I went to a local community college [2008-07-20]

There are plenty that can be found on line and IMO are WAY better than Norton. I tried it twice and both times got viruses. For the $$ they charge, I don't think that should happen! Do a Google search for free antivirus program, which should give you plenty from which to choose!

with your supervisor, but until then, I would not worry about bringing it up. If it ever happens, just ask her should you do it or return it to the pool and let her make the call. I did type a doctor's visit for a close friend's dad one time. My friend nor his father ever knew that I did it, and it's been so long I couldn't tell you what was in it if I wanted to. I do believe if it was family or very close friends, though, I'd let the boss know and do whatever she/he decided.

All you need to do is create files or folders, for example by date, upload them to the FTP site, and the doc's office can in turn download them directly to their computer. This uses a secure password on both parties' end, and is much securer than emailing.

Legal question [2008-09-03]
Hi all! I am considering starting a business transcribing reports for students. I live in a college town and I think this would be a good idea. Any opinions on All N One Wave Transcriber? [2008-09-03]
I am looking for a new transcriber software kit. The All N One Wave Transcriber by Martel Electronics looks good but they don't have a free trial download. I don't want to buy without knowing anything about it. I need something that I can see all the files that have been downloaded to me and that I can listen to and name file by file.I have a doctor that many times does not complete the dictationin one sitting - may continue it days later. I need to be able tosearch through files tosee ifI have the continuations or not. Most, from what I have found, don't have this option. I haveSony's Digital Voice Editor and love it but reallydislike thepedal so am trying to find something similar in another software.Does anyone out there have experience with this software and pedal (All N One)? Thanks in advance for any advice.

no outsource [2008-09-03]
I honestly don't think they're going to go to outsourcing any time soon. Besides...I'm not going to be at this hospital for years and years. My husband is graduating from college in June and we may be relocating after that. I'm just wondering if I should ask for a raise for the extra work that I put in, or at least a bonus or some sort of recognition or compensation.

How to Start a Union at Work By eHow Careers Work Editor A union is an organized group of workers who join together to help make decisions about their work, and if you've never considered being in one before, it's time to look into it. Joining or starting a union can give you greater bargaining power for wages and benefits, and create a sense of community at your place of work. Identify Your Rights 1. Know that federal and state laws both protect your right to form a union. 2. Contact a union organizer to help guide you when planning your union. 3. Keep in mind that your rights extend to organizing interest meetings, wearing union buttons and signing up new members. 4. Know that the majority of workers who are considering unionizing must work in similar capacities and roles in the workplace. Consider the Benefits of Unionization Step1Know that you will most likely receive higher wages with a union. Union pay tends to be higher for all occupations. Step2Expect better health care and pensions when forming a union. Union workers are also more likely to receive disability and retirement. Step3Understand that your state may not have right to work provisions. This may help your union become even stronger, with better bargaining power. Contact the Right Groups Step1Know that you should contact local unions for support. Step2Check your phone book for local union contacts or contact a union by checking out the Resources below. Step3Look into the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), which can help you unionize your line of work. Even those whose jobs aren't covered by the NLRB should verify that the unionization of their profession will be considered by the NLRB. Begin Creating Your Union Step1Obtain a Union Authorization Card to start organizing your union. You will need to collect 30 percent of the employee's signatures. Step2Submit your Union Authorization Card to the NLRB for review. Step3Wait for NLRB to recommend the next step. Once approval of the Union Authorization Card is reached, you can prepare for an election. Step4Set the date of the union election. Step5Campaign to keep potential union members in the know. Step6Obtain union status by getting a 50 percent plus 1 result in your election. Step7Know that after approval, NLRB acts as the bargaining unit between the employers and employees. $('.Article .Steps .Image').each(function(i,e){ e = $(e); e.find('img').error(function(){ $(this).unbind(); e.remove(); }); }); Ads by Google Union CardExclusive Benefits Protection forUnion Members. THIS DRIVES ME NUTS [2008-08-25]
why are we so concerned with sending work overseas?? This nation is so concerned with fixing problems everywhere else in the world and not focusing on our own! Why do we constantly send work, money, military, etc etc etc overseas when we have homeless, starving, children (and adults!) here in the USA? We have students who can't go to college because they can't afford it and the federal government won't help because they are not a minority! We have people who can't get jobs for the same reason! How about this?! Why don't we stop looking at race, background, and gender, and start looking at qualifications? Why don't we stop judging what people need based on color? But i'm getting off track... This country has a serious issue, and it starts with companies like AHDI. Rather than lobby for a standard they need to lobby for our work staying right here. When there is such an over abundance of work here that no one goes hungry and everyone has a roof over there head, then we can send it over there. I know there is such a romanticism about helping foreign areas. We see it everywhere. Celebrities adopting foreign children, missionaries wanting to go to China but not bothering to minister to people in their own back yard. Yes, we need to help, but we need to take care of our own also! There is something wrong when a basketball player makes millions and a teacher barely can get by on his or her salary. What kind of country have we become? We place more value on entertainment then on morals and education. When will it stop? We are going to dig ourselves in to such a hole and we are going to pull down all of our greed, immorality, conceitedness and every other vile thing we have become down on our heads! I'm sorry I just don't understand what is so great about our country anymore. It seems we've got it pretty twisted. It won't be long before we start to reap what we sow. And I promise you, in the healthcare world, if all of our transcription goes overseas, and the documentation process becomes sub par, next thing you know the lawsuits will quadruple, which will raise the cost of healthcare, which will mean absolutely no healthcare for some, and so on and so on. But hey, all in pursuit of the almighty dollar, right???

I hear you! [2008-08-25]
Our values are in the wrong place. The only way change will occur is if individuals stop rewarding big business. We are the reason the celebrities and athletes make so much money. It is a vicious cycle ... the more discouraged and helpless people feel, the more they turn to superficial pleasures, buy crap they don't need, eat and drink too much. All we can do is each try to set a good example, vote and make changes (the best we can) in our government (and keep letting our representatives what we expect from them! Free enterprise allows for a lot of bull$#it trickery among large companies (phone, etc.) and how pathetic are we to fall for the sickening marketing ploys of junk we don't need or even enjoy once we have it?! I'm only touching on one aspect of what you mentioned, but I think I have said enough. :)

opinions, please [2008-08-25]
Do the majority here think that our supervisors and managers are out of touch? Before you laugh, this is a serious question. As we type all these crappy soundfiles, static, ESLs, Christmas carols in August, and on and on, do you think that our managers who were MTs xyears ago would really be able to produce as much as they expect us to do day in and day out? What they did in the past isn't an apples-to-apples comparison any more than if we do that. This is a today survey of sorts. The main reason I ask this is naturally as above (the out of touch/too far removed thing), but beyond that, now thatwehave all the perks of the digital age, why do we still have all these audio problems and everything else we endure on a daily basis? Why have those problems yet to be resolved, seriously? I thought about this over the weekend as I had an entire shift of one doc, who always uses a horrible phone or something. The end result is always leaving quite a few blanks--and that's after QA goes over it. This isn't a diss session. It's more a fact-finding one. Thanks for reading this and adding comments.

what is the longest you are willing to wait for check? sm [2008-08-25]
Background - been typing for a Chicagoland MTSO for over seven years now. Invoices are sent 15th and end of month and paid 30 days later. For the most part, invoices are received on a pretty regular basis, but there have been notable delays explained away by the ChicagoPost Office is theworst in the nation.Fast forward to today; in the past two months I have received exactly ONE invoice - the rest have been delayed because of the Chicago PO orlost in the mail so stop payment (supposedly) on the oldest check and reissuance. It was supposedly mailed 08/15 and now seven mailing days later I still do not have it. I have sent polite e-mails to the accounting person but I keep being told to wait 10 business days before a new check can be cut. In the meantime, college tuition is due and bank account is dwindling. I am in the process of looking for another MTSO but in the meantime, general consensus on how long you would wait for a check. I have a long history with this MTSO and don't really want to go the labor and wage board route but I am getting kind of fed up...I can't work for free!

They think we are stupid [2008-08-25]
In biz anything that is paid is cost LOL what about the billing cycle revenue and legal protection transcriptionists provide. They fail to mention that everything is cost from the nursing salaries to the paper cups in the cafeteria. What a joke and sad attempt to put the blame for their creepy ways on the big bad administrators and insurance companies. Yeah lets support them so they can reduce wages even more with the black character line bs. If they were devoted to MTs, apart from patient care & safety they would be advocating for us by emphasizing to hosptials admins and risk management and insurance companies about the legal protection that error free accurate reports provide. They would be emphasizing the value of what we are offer/our product instead of working against us.

Just when you thought you had a place to go as an American and have free speech and a pace to keep your thoughts about not offshoring OUR medical and professional documentation, they buy the site you felt comfortable on. To top it off, if you question their Country of origin or state that this was an American site, they delete your posts. Many are still posting there but if you post anything about off shoring and your displeasure, you are deleted. Many American Jobs post their “want ads” and I wonder how many will get replies from overseas candidates now. Often times using American names and yahoo or Google emails to hide their whereabouts. Boycott MTStars.com, they are now American owned any longer.

VR by 2010. [2008-08-22]
Voice is not your upcoming problem, templated reports are. Working VR people know that it will never replace us .. they can brag to sell but then you are still left with the fall out of having to clean up reports. What it has done (most particularly e-scription) is drive down the price of MT salaries across the board. The company who sold to Nuance seemed to be on a control frenzy of racking up the big hospitals and driving down costs which is, of course, what the bean counters want. I have my credential but never have been a proponent of an association who controls the exam. I would rather see us be licensed. As an educator I feel that there are many who never did take an exam .. they were there at the beginning and are still working. There are now 2 levels of examination for acute care and for clinic and newer MT grads. I really feel that licensure would place us on an even playing field with others working in allied health. Mostly I consider getting out save for my teaching whch I love, but I am so spoiled working at home I continue to drag my feet. I also have to say that offshore has been around long before we all started to discuss it and, that being said and having been offshore, it is the big companies - Spheris, Medquist, Healthscribe (now defunct), Heartland, C-Bay and all of those with suits who sold their transcriptionists out to go for the big bucks. AHDI is simply not clever enough for that .. believe it. Worry about templates and worry about companies, not associations, who smile in your face while they send work you could be doing off by the boat load. AHDI has made some veryquestionable judgment calls like aligning with owners and these sorts of ridiculous things, but they are not just as intuitive or as well connected as you or they think. What drives this industry is technology, nothing more and nothing less. The guy with the slickest, biggest program wins no matter whether it works or not .. and yet we continue to hack away. It is a conundrum!!

don't be discouraged [2008-08-22]
I made the decision to become a medical Transcriptionist after years of working in the financial corporate world. I went to a business college that offered the MT program, as well as court reporting, medical assisting, etc...I would recommend obtaining your education that way. It took about 9 months. I have been consistently employed for 15 years now. When one job goes, another pops up just like that. I was fortunate to have had employment in our local county hospital, and I did that for 5 years. I have also worked with tapes at local doctors offices as an IC. The possibilies really are endless. One question - do you type? Because if you already have that skill - you are well on your way...

Writing rates [2008-08-21]
Hi all, I know this is probably weird and not related to medical transcription. However, I have been doing MT for 3 years. I was just asked if I would like to update an article for an online job search. I had actually just given some information about a former job I had held for many years and wrote the site to let them know there were some inaccuracies in the article I had read. I got a response back asking if I would like to write some articles to fix the inaccuracies and he asked what I would charge to do so. I have written essaysin college before, but I have never written an online article. So, I was wondering if there happened to be anyone on here that has done such and wondered if you guys had an idea of what a fair price to charge to do this. Thank you in advance :)

Nope. [2008-08-21]
I have two transcription companies I work for, plus my own account. I work about 8-10 hours a day on average. My 1 account doesn't bring in a significant amount because the doc isn't in that office but 2 weeks out of the month. I love how people keep assuming stuff with their comebacks though. It makes me laugh. I live in Texas, but I recently moved from somewhere where the cost of living was higher and did just fine. My reasons for working from home: I don't have to pay high gas prices, plus wear and tear on my vehicle, buy work clothes, childcare, eat out everyday, etc. I added it up and I would be paying over $1200 a month if I had to work out the home! OH, and don't forget drive time and being on the road with all of the idiots. That in itself is a big plus to me! Like I said, this works for me. I am not trying to be bossy by telling someone to get out of the profession. Why make yourself miserable and do something that you talk down about? Common sense would tell you to go find something else, wouldn't it? It would for me! If your income is so low, you can get grants to go to college. It just doesn't make sense to me. People are acting like this is McDonald's or some other low-end job working for peanuts. I don't see how making $15-30 an hour (with the lower end hopefully being an employee) is bad. I don't see how that is bad for a career that doesn't take a four-year degree. Anyway, I think I am done. I have work to do. Have fun!

Me 2, 15-20 years ago I was making about $70,000 a year [2008-08-21]
Now it seems, I'm just scraping by, juggling the utility bills and paying whichever one has sent me the 24-hour disconnect notice this month; it's become a grim miserable job compared to what it was. I'm nearing retirement age, but I doubt retirement is going to be in my future for a very long time. Thesingle worst thing that ever happened to us was going from the gross line count to the character count, and not adjusting the line rate upward to parity -- not to mention the adjustments that should have been made to accommodate all the extra time spent struggling to make sense of huge increase in ESL dictations that has occurred over the last 15 years, and of course there should have been COLAs as well, which we all know has not happened. In the 1980s, with the advent of powerful and affordable PCs, free lance transcription became much more common. So if you were experienced, disciplined and organized, you could be much better off economically by working for yourself -- although there were definitely advantages to working in-hospital. There were great benefits and the salary was indeed enough to support a small family (albeit very modestly.) For a number of years during that time, many of us worked part time in the hospital for benefits, but made our real money at home. But in my case, the time came when it just made no economic sense to work in-housel, I was better buying off buying private insurance for major medical care, tax-deferred annuities, and self-insuring the little stuff. I would just pick up tapes from the hospital every morning, and drop off the work (whichI printed out) from the day before. I usually had 24 hours to transcribe tapes which I did during school hours, when things were peaceful and quiet. I transcribed a couple thousand GROSS lines day. Every single character line counted, so by taking advantageof headers/footers,creative macros, word expansions, etc., I really boosted my productivity far beyond to what I could do in-house on the self-correcting Selectric, Wang or Mag Card, or whatever 10-years behind technology was currently being used, plus all the office distractions and politics, and I definitely did not to have to work 24/7 to earn a good living. (Oh how I loved WP5.1!) In fact, 2000 gross lines a day, 5 days a week at 10 cents a line (courier 10-pitch font, one-inch margins)was very very do-able for an experienced productive acute-care MT, provided she had good equipment, good reference books, and stayed focused. It would take about 5-6 hours a day to get that amount of work done. So figure the math out for yourselves, that's just a tad under $50,000 a year, certainly not a high standard of living in those days but adequate when it meant you could stay home and be actually be a full time parent when your children were home from school, and very comfortable, if you were married with a working spouse,or had rerliable child support, or social security for your children (if you were widowed.) If you chose to work some weekends and evenings, it was not that all that difficult to hit that $75,000 a year mark, which I did for a couple of years so I was able to pay the tuition at a good boarding school -- and cruelly thwarted my teen-aged son's only ambition in life, which was to become a high schooldrop-out. Things have gotten bad, no doubt about that, and the worst part of it is, is that most of the big MTSOs are still charging the hospitals as much as we used to earn, and sometimes even more, but the MT is no longer earning it, and often can't get enough work to meet the line counts required by the MTSOs for benefits (although the cost of those benefits are reflected in the cost charged to the hospital.) I don't know what the answer is, as the electronic immigrant is such a huge threat. It's pretty darn awful, and I feel very very bad for those of you starting out in this field, and I do hope things change for you (and that someday soon I can retire.) And the point that the person made is that that she was worth $75,000 a year, not necessarily that she was getting it or could get it, and I absolutely agree with her. This is a hard tough job if it's done right --it's mentally tiring, it's hard on your back, your hands, your neck (and your behind.) It requires a lot of time -- it requires focus, you must stay alert, and must give 100% of your attention to what you are doing 100% of the time, it takes education and brains -- and now a word of truth which my 35+ years experience gives me the right to say aloud -- it's not fulfilling, wonderful, lovable and enjoyable, it's often as repetitious and tedious as an assembly line but infinitely more frustrating. PS:I recall one of my colleagues from those early years of my career, now gone from this earth, telling me that the 1960s were really the fat years, that things actually began to decline salary-wise, in real dollars, in the 1970s.

I find your post interesting. I am one of those that will not do this. sm [2008-08-20]
1. I teach at a local college. I teach MT classes, A&P and medical terminology. Guess what, they do not require it. Again they use my experience in lieu of it. 2. I know what position I currently hold. Again, does not need it and experience again is used in lieu of it. 3. I have 20 years of experience. Do I care if I have CMT behind my name? Really I don't. It will not make a difference. 4. I have worked in MT, QA, Management, etc. Again, did not need it do any of the above. AAMT or AHDI as it is now callded.. they are there to sell a book to make money. They are selling a title to make money. However, this title makes little to no difference in the real world. I have worked for companies that did pay their CMTs 0.5 cpl to 1 cpl line higher than people without it. Learn to negotiate is all I can say. Your CMT certification does not keep jobs from going overseas and does not qualify you to have the knowledge to be an Editor of that type of work. Anyone with 2 years' experience can take the test. Big deal. All companies test and I say at least half are bull. I have failed 1 test in 20 years, and then they hired me anyway because they felt there was something wrong (Thank you MTtest.com). I have 20 years' experience. I am very good at what I do (and yes I will say this). I can also get the rate I want or tell them No Thank You. I have worked with MTs from no experience to OMG experience. I have seen failure in both areas. The CMT would not have changed anything for either one. A test is a test is a test. You might have a good day and pass it, or I guess you might not. I just do not feel the need for someone to tell me that I know what I am doing. Everyone have a great Wednesday!
