V.A. hospital accounts [2008-12-01]
DO require a background check. At least the ones I have worked on.

I do with mine plus online access nm [2008-11-28]

Can the company making the deposit access your [2008-11-28]
Will the MT company paying my depositing into this bank debit check card account be able to access my checking account and take money out of my checking account?

At my hospital, MTs were not part of the union, [2008-11-25]
so maybe that may be the case at your hospital, too. I wouldn't know that. Our MTs had to cross the picket lines if they wanted to keep their jobs.

Have you ever been part of a hospital strike sm [2008-11-24]
I will tell you that I first-hand saw that out of a varied group of workers, the MTs were the FIRST and ONLY work group to cross the picket line to scab themselves for the money. I didn't, but it was me and 2 other people out of 25 who stayed out. That is the reason unions and strikes do not work for transcriptionists. We have a majority who will sell everyone else down the river to put more money into their own pockets.

Our hospital [2008-11-24]
Only has an audit trail once the document has been e-signed. Before that, anyone can go in and do whatever without leaving a reason or seeing a history. Thankfullly, we type in a dictaphone system and it crosses an interface into meditech. The dictaphone system will show the report at all stages and show which Transcriptionist made which changes.

I don't expect to be paid OT. I need access to jobs during my shift. [2008-11-14]
I have a line count to meet. If the system goes down or something happens causing me to not be able to have work, for 3 and 1/2 years, I was able to make up time on my day off.

Overhiring and hospital MT [2008-11-14]
I hope your friend knows how lucky she is. Some of our doctors fussed about server issue problems with this new company. We could not get work, so hospital did not get work. This week has been better so maybe it got fixed. I wish our hospital would bring us back. Hospital had excellent MTs, but they did not want to spend money on new equipment which was always breaking down and really we needed more MTs on evening shift which we had none which was crazy because my ex-hospital was huge. I never could understand why they did not have at least 2-3 girls on 2nd and 3rd shift and then we got behind a little, not much, but it was mostly due to hospital dictating system, then a few docs complained to administration and that was itm out the door and we were history. I think we did excellent for the work volume we had. The thing is that I do not understand is that they got rid of use acute-care and cardiology MT, but kept the in-house radiology girls, and luckily my acute-care friend had a friend in radiology dept so they called her and asked her to come and work for them FT, so back to the hospital she goes hourly rate again too. She is lucky. We were a good group of girls who worked very good together, but as usual Administration never asked us our opinions on how to improve anything. They never listened but what else is new. What it boils down to there is no security in the job field anymore.

Lie on the Internet? [2008-11-07]
Anything you see or read on the internet is about to have a 30% chance of being true. In a chat room, that percentage may be even smaller. You can't take to heart.

hospital work going to spheris [2008-11-05]
We too are in the same situation.. got the announcement, very minimal information, very general.. and now nothing.. we are supposed to transition in July next year.. I am hoping for the best but expecting the worst.. we have a lot of American speaking doctors, heard they like to send those to India, very nervous.. whole hospital system network going to spheris.. I am sure there are many more of us, on the edge, waiting....

Internet speed requirement for Chartnet? [2008-11-04]
My company is in the process of moving to Chartnet and are saying the optimum internet speed is 3000 Kbs upload, 600 Kbs download. At best, I get 1200 Kbs upload, 400 Kbs download, but often less. I have no other internet options where I live. Am I going to have a lot of problems? Thanks in advance.

If you are hiring someone over the Internet, [2008-10-25]
and you are not interviewing them in person but over the phone, have them mail you a copy of their SS card. Unfortunately, I think that is why most services will not pay too high a rate to an IC, so the IC will not outsource the work to a third party.

in-house hospital is the best learning experience. sm [2008-10-23]
and is accepted with anyone. at least a year or more. there nothing like having someone right there at hand first time out. good luck, you'll do fine.

I have satellite internet [2008-10-21]
As long as the only requirement is high-speed internet, I dont' see that there should be a problem. Sometimes you'll see that they say no satellite, probably because they work on an internet platform and satellite can sometimes be unreliable. Also check to see what thier method of sending and receiving dictation is - if it's through an FTP site, you're okay. I have found that the satellite takes a little longer with downloading and uploading, but still works just as good as cable or others. Good luck to you!

satellite internet [2008-10-20]
Are there any transcription companies that will work with satellite internet?

I worked for a hospital like this [2008-10-19]
We went to the supe about it and she told us that if we had time to eyeball the job lister, we must not be doing our work so...she took our job lister away.

If you have been working for a hospital and SM [2008-10-13]
never a national before, to be really blunt and I don't really want to be, but you won't know what hit you. You will be truly stunned at how underhanded big business is. You think you know, but you don't, until it happens to you. I wish I had something positive to say. If I did, I might say simply to find another line of work. When you go to work for Spheris or any other national company, you are in for a shock.

It's called Internet Traffic [2008-10-03]
There is adownload wait timedue to being a free user trying to access the download. Encountering internet trafficis not unheard of. There are plenty of websites that offer their users a limited amount of bandwidth per month, this just happens to be one of them, add on the fact that thisis also an internetprime time andalsothat these links are posted on a worldwide message board, and hey you do the math.

It would depend on what the hospital uses. [2008-09-27]
Every account/facility is different.

Why don't you call the hospital? [2008-09-26]
If it is a VA hospital, I would think they would be concerned if subcontractor was playing games with the money.

Google

I do [2008-12-03]
I do this and it helps with the volume. It is amazing how poor the sound quality of most dictation is. I experimented by listing to videos on the Internet. Those sounded like movie theater quality compared to the dictation. I think the quality is just as good when plugged directly into the computer, but the volume capacity is higher if you use speakers. You don't even have to have good speakers when using them this way.

rash [2008-12-03]
my daughter developed a horrible rash under her arms that started spreading over her sides, went to the doctor 3 times and got creams, antibiotics, and steroids, nothing helped. we finally discovered it was caused by aspartame (Splenda), and went away when she stopped using it in her coffee. researching on the internet, this appears to be a common reaction to aspartame.

Verizon HSI, stating security no longer available [2008-12-03]
anyone else with Verizon high-speed internet? saying that we now have to pay an introductory rate of $1.99 per month for the first six months for continued security. my computer runs PC tools Spyware doctor and Norton protection center, which I assume was provided by Verizon. Is that what they're talking about discontinuing? anybody ???

You do not get any credit for the signature [2008-12-02]
line, patient demographics, carbon copy lines, etc. Some of this info may not take a lot of effort on your part, but it still will take a bit of input for which you will not be paid. These saves lines add up at the end of the day, thus saving the hospital tons of money. It makes you wonder what will be cut next to save a buck?

Old Drug books [2008-11-30]
Most MTs use the internet to keep updated on the latest pharmaceuticals. There are a gazillion sites out there that offer a lot more information that Quick Look drug books. They are relics of the past. Although you might find someone who wants one if you are lucky.

You are right. While the people of Mumbai [2008-11-30]
are in my prayers in a time of crisis, I also think that this could help the US MTs, by making hospitals/clinics here aware of how vulnerable protected PHI is, to unauthorized access. The attacks earlier this year plus this recent attack hopefully will make healthcare providers realize where this info is going. A filthy and dangerous place.

Doctor's hate to dictate. I can't tell you how many docs [2008-11-28]
have told me over the years how dictating is their least favorite part of their job. This is why so many of them suck at it. I used to the transcription supervisor at a teaching hospital and I used to have to train the new residents each year on the dictation system and I used to beg them to dictate slowly and clearly and I would bribe them with promises of food. I would stock the chart completion room where most of the dictated from with all kinds of snacks and treats. Docs are so sweet when they are residents. Then they turn ugly as the years go by!

thank you for advice [2008-11-25]
Thanks for the advice. They outsource us to Spheris a few years back & it was a complete mess & the radiologists complained to get us back at the hospital, so I don't know why they would do this to us yet once again. BUT the place that is buying the hospital now has all of their hospitals outsourced with Spheris & made comment they want their hospitals the same:( I am so upset about it.

At my hospital, MTs were not part of the union, [2008-11-25]
so maybe that may be the case at your hospital, too. I wouldn't know that. Our MTs had to cross the picket lines if they wanted to keep their jobs.

Proofing Help Pleeeez! (long post) [2008-11-24]
I am 53,divorcee with 1 child in college, been MTing for 32 years. When I started out I was one of the best in my field, accurate, at my peak was making close to 50,000 a year, only one job and only 40 hours a week. Now, here I am going through menopause, working 12 hours a day (1 full-time and 1 part-time) and barely making ends meet. My production is at an all-time low, and I'm working on my 3rd or 4th job this year- I forget, it's been so many, for various reasons why they didn't work out. But, now I find myself, going into my third week of employment with this company, still in QA, making stupid grammatical errors, and leaving out words, that I am not aware of. I would like to say one of my problems is that this is a huge Children's Hospital with a lot of procedures, diseases, and terminology I have never heard of, but I cannot really say that, as most of my errors are gramatical, i.e. not putting comma or semi-colon where it belongs, leaving out it, and, but and they. I am beginning to feel they may not keep me. I am 1 pay check from being homeless, now jobless, already uninsured, as I could not afford the Cobra. I have applied for jobs completely out of the MT field, so far with no luck of being hired. I put in an application last week for a State Job with excellent benefits, paid by company, and although the salary is 22,000 to 36,000, if they call me, I am definitely going to take it. I figure I have 15 more years before retirement, and if I can tap into the retirement for the next 15 years, that would be a help, as I don't have any 401K to fall back on. Anyways, if you guys can give me some proofreading tips that will not take away from my production, I would greatly appreciate it. Most companies don't offer a training pay that would last at least 2 weeks, which would be a help. So here I am trying to make money, which is virtually impossible when you're training on a new account, new company, new software and everything. Help Guys.

somebody help!!!! [2008-11-23]
Ok I have been transcribing for 10yrs for a hospital. The hospital is being bought out by some company I am scared to death of being outsourced:( I know it seems like outsourcing is really putting a damper on the transcription career making it miserable for alot of people out there that went into this field. Sooooo does anybody know how would I go about starting my own transcription business??? I am sure I would have to be licensed insured or whatever but will somebody PLEASE explain to me in detail the whole procedure in going about this if it is worth the headache?????

Out of work now [2008-11-22]
That is great and fine for those of you who have a job, but mine was eliminated and not much out there for those of us who do not have high speed internet. Has anyone checked out Sologig for work? I know since I looked for a job on CareerBuilder, I get all kinds of spam. Am wondering if anyone really gets real jobs/work through Sologig. TIA

Service Employees International Union (SEIU) [2008-11-22]
Strike looms at Hastings hospital By TIM HARLOW, Star Tribune Last update: November 21, 2008 - 11:12 PM About 230 employees at Regina Medical Center in Hastings are spending today making final preparations for a two-day strike they have called for next week. Nurses aides, X-ray technicians, physical therapy aides, housekeepers, dietary workers, medical transcriptionists, operating room aides, patient care technicians who are part of Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Healthcare Minnesota are set to walk of the job at 6 a.m. Monday unless they can come to agreement on a new contract over the weekend, said Ryan Nagle, a union spokesman. No new talks are scheduled paving the way for the two-day walkout on Monday and Tuesday. The union is not calling for an open-ended strike because we want to limit any impact on patients but still get its message out to the hospital and the community, Nagle said. The workers have been without a contract since Oct. 31 and have rejected offers that would bring them higher costs for health insurance and a reduce retirement benefits. Pay is not a sticking point in the negotiations, Nagle said. Union members and hospital officials have met several times in the past three weeks, but last met on Monday. Nagle said union members will meet at 3:30 p.m. today at the Pleasant Hill Library to make picket signs and support each other. window.onerror=function(){clickURL=document.location.href;return true;} if(!self.clickURL) clickURL=parent.location.href;

MT is not that easy. [2008-11-22]
Years back when CEOs were taking over hospital transcription departments many had no clue about MTs. One even hired a hair stylist because she said always wanted to be an MT. In his mind, a hair stylist had what it took to succeed. She didn't last long as she never dreamed it would be so hard. He hired quite a few RNs thinking they also would have what it took. Most of the RNs had a hard time also and decided to leave. This CEO was so disappointed that these people didn't succeed because he liked them. He often treated seasoned MTs with 20+ years experience with disdain and dislike as these women were older, not as pretty and not as apt to kiss his .... as they knew what they were doing and felt they should get some respect. Sadly we are not respected enough or appreciated enough as not just anyone can be hired off the street to do our work.

I don't post here super ofte, but I could use some thoughts [2008-11-21]
I have worked for many, many docs as an IC. You always do the dirty work, reprints, redelivery, etc. I did all those willingly and then was told on Friday by Peds manager they had someone to work in the office. After about two months, they called and wanted me back. I went back with about 20 tapes she had not done and just did not show up one day. Little man syndrome, one doctor whom I worked for, called it. Be encouraged, you will probably get him back. Sounds like you do very good work. I have had so many just like this I have lost count and now work for a company with NO money - ha. The docs around here dictate to the company I work for and the hospital pays for it! Another day in the life of a transcriptionist. There are probably errors in this too so go ahead and nit pick.

What a terrible thing to call a hard-working MT. [2008-11-21]
Disgusting name to call someone who has worked very hard, probably gone to college to learn this, invested a lot of time and money, perhaps worked in a hospital, certainly worked very hard, to be called a slob!

DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO [2008-11-21]
I don't usually post anything on the internet but I was hoping to maybe get some positive feedback. I started as an MT in 1990. I worked for Kaiser in So CA for 15 years. I transcribed all work types and all specialties for hundreds of doctors.I took pride in my work and found it challenging on how to find ways to get the reportsdone faster. I had a very good job -$22.00per hour when I left - (they are union.) Ihad to leave because I had to have asubacromial decompression for impingement syndrome on my right and left shoulder. I still have flare-ups from pain. It was due to my job, and they could not honor my work restrictions when it was time to go back (I could only work 4 hurs a day)so I had to leave. That was okay with me - I had been commuting 100 miles round trip for years and I was burned out.I started a small transcription business of my own and had a few accounts - (I did them all myself.) I also have worked for a few transcription services throughout the years. I am not bragging by any means but I was always told that I did a very good job and I had very particular doctors. About a year ago my husbandcontracting businesstook off and he told me I did not have to work anymore. That was fine with me. Only now, due to theeconomy, the contractingbusiness is down. Anyway, I have to go back to transcribing as we have no money. I mean NO money, and we owe a lot. I have never been in this situation in my life and I am very scared. My point being - asyou all know when you stop transcribing hospital transcription for a time you lose a lot of your skillsI guess you would say. My confidence is way down. I have failed a few tests. I am 51 years old and I am scared to death. I have to find a job. Why can I am so down and I thought maybe some of you had been through this before. I did not mean to tell my life story, but when I explain to my husband or my friends they don Anyway thanks for listening....

I too am an IC who has worked for 2 doctors sm [2008-11-21]
for quite some time (going on 6 years now). Fortunately things have been going well and I get along very well with the office staff, as well as with the docs, though I don't see them much. We have hit some rough spots though, like when I was told I was doing too much work! I work full time at a hospital in addition to my IC work and most of my typing for the IC work is done on the weekend. Two tapes a day usually means I have between 5-8 tapes every weekend. One time I brought 8 tapes on Monday, feeling very proud of all the work I had done and I was slammed for causing their secretary too much work! Sheesh....so now even if I do all my tapes I only send in 4 at a time. Oh brother! It's tricky trying to keep a good working relationship with everyone. I hope you can resolve your issues. If I were to lose my IC work, I would be devastated, financially and personally. Best wishes to you!

most employers use the Book of Style sm [2008-11-21]
for standards and I would get one and read up on it to know the latest info...what did you fail on your testing? Speed? accuracy? You can certainly brush up on these things with practice tapes/dictation. Have you thought of typing independently for clinics in your area? Don't forget about psychiatric clinics, physical therapy clinics and other, less obvious places where documentation is necessary. Go personally to a doctor's office, speak only to the office manager there and tell them you are looking for work, perhaps at first only as a helper/coverage for their current Transcriptionist (I cover many doctor's offices for vacations). It will get your foot in the door at least. I have had two doctors ask me to be their full time transcriptionist after their own had left because I was their vacation coverage and they knew I could handle the job. Keep your head up! Perhaps working at a local hospital is the way to go. Good luck to you!

you could do what most of us have done sm [2008-11-20]
start in-house at a hospital or clinic.

Use something to prop your foot pedal [2008-11-20]
higher, sometimes it is as simple as putting it on a telephone book or have someone make you a wooden stand. At one hospital I worked one fo the ladies' husbands made us all a gradually sloping stand to put our foot pedals on, it was great.

RE: How can one person make it [2008-11-20]
If you get a job at a hospital and then take part-time job, you might can make it.

Can anyone tell me the average hourly rate or annual salary for sm [2008-11-19]
in-house hospital employee around Carmel Valley? Hourly range or annual salary. Thank you so very much for any information!!
