Word [2008-12-02]
You have to be completely out of E and open up your Word document. Change your settings there. Then exit. It should stick after that. But, if you open Word to do other work or look at a document that is not in the font you use to work, you will need to change the font again as that is what will stick when you open E again. Hope that's understood.
MS Word grammar settings? [2008-11-27]
I would like to set up my MS Word to catch as many grammar errors as possible. Should I just check every box?
Thanks
MS Word help [2008-11-27]
When I start a new sentence, the first letter automatically caps, but lately I have noticed that the letter N does not. Does anyone know what would cause that and when to check (and fix) in the settings?
Thanks for your help!
Maybe you have something in autocorrect changing it back to lowercase? [2008-11-27]
Or maybe there is a number at the end of the previous sentence. Word doesn't cap after numbers and punctuation.
Word and erros [2008-11-27]
Word does not catch all grammatical erros. Your best option would be to refer to the AAMT Book of Style.

try to adjust your Grammar check, so it will pick up on those little mistakes you are making.
I have mine set, so I don't miss anything, including commas, sentence structure, etc.
If you are not working in Word, than just try to adjust your ear and slow down just a tad. If you proof while transcribing, you will probably catch the small things.
Good luck to you, keep your chin up, and smile!!
Question about microsoft word??? [2008-11-24]
Okay I am typing a interview and am wondering how to get all the words to automatically tab over so I don't go back and have to do it manually. It's like this
Interviewer: Response XXXXXXXXXXXXXX ffadXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
and all words of response need to be under the response. Hope that makes sense.
question about Word function [2008-11-21]
ok. I'm not fond of the mouse. Instead of clicking the numbering icon on the toolbar, can this be assigned a keyboard code - and how?
Which version of Word? [2008-11-21]
You can turn on auto numbering or you can assign a keyboard shortcut to a numbering style.

How many of you have used this or are using it? I never heard of it before and was wondering if it was worth the investment.
Did you just say: You can very easily "add lines by inserting a word here and there" [2008-11-14]
I recall back in the mid 1990s, I was working with a fellow MT who was on midnight shift in medical records. He was making a huge sum of money and we all thought he was the Whiz.
Come to find out, he was inserting phrases, embellishing dictated sentences I guess you'd call it, to get more lines per report. He got away with it for a number of years but was kissing up to the supervisor and director, always available to help out, nicest guy in the world - but a thief - who fooled us all.

Ediscript V8 upgrade and word 2007 [2008-11-14]
I need to upgrade and am hearing conflicting issues. Has anybody used the V8 of Editscript with the Home and Student edition office 2007? Two people from Microsoft themselves told me different answers, yes and no. One told me that word 2007 is word 2007 no matter what bundle it comes in and the other told me that I can't run 3rd party software on the home and student edition. Anybody have this answer?

why on 1 computer for the same report would the word count be different in Word? (inside) [2008-11-12]
Like on 1 computer with word the document was 27000 character counts w/spaces

Make Word 03 and 07 work together! [2008-11-10]
First of all, I appologize for the LONG message, but well worth reading if you use Word. I asked this question on the Microsoft Discussion Board on 11/7/08. Here are the posts:
DeviousRedBaron wrote: I am running Word 2007. For work, I download a template created in Word 2003, then type my document in Word 2007. After this, I have to import header/footer info that I believe is created with Word 2003. This takes a long time and at the bottom of the screen the message Word is replacing ... appears. Is there any way I can speed this up, or avoid it all together? I love Word 2007 and would like to continue to use it. I do have Word 2003 also. I cannot change the info that I have to download. I access it through the intranet and it is different for each report. (I am a medical transcriptionist.) Speed is important in my line of work! Thanks in advance!!!!!
Graham Mayor wrote: You will need to tell us more about the importing of the header/footer. How? From where? What is the exact sequence of steps used to create a document. At what point does the message appear? -- Graham Mayor - Word MVP My web site www.gmayor.com Word MVP web site http://word.mvps.org
DeviousRedBaron wrote: Hi Graham, I open my transcription program (created by the transcription company that I work for) and download my reports over the intranet. These are voice files and .doc information (that ends up in the header/footer). I double click on the report I want to type up and a template box pops up. I choose the .dot template that I need and it automatically opens Word in compatability mode with part of the header/footer info already in the document. This is usually the hospital/clinic address and phone number, or what ever info that particular company has requested. On some reports, there are headings that are loaded into the body of the document as well. This process is usually pretty quick, depending on my company's server. Now, I type up my report in the body of the document. When I am finished, I have to apply the demographics to the document. This is the information about the patient, clinic/hospital numbers, doctors' names, cc info...that is also downloaded with the report from the intranet. Some of this info goes into the header/footer as well. Some of this info is attached to the document so it is sent to the correct departments/doctors.... Once I apply the demographics, I have to wait for Word to replace .....something. (The message on the bottom of Word flashes from a long message to a short one very rapidly, making it impossible to read the entire message!) I have read a little bit about writing a code (macro) so that everything opened with Word is opened in 2003 format. I do not start Word, it opens with my company software, so I never get to choose a template in Word. I have also tried to set the compatibility for all documents to 2003 and this does nothing. Also tried to set it up to save as a 2003 document, as well as a .dot and this does not make any difference. I am at a loss! Thanks for your quick response, it is greatly appreciated!
Graham Mayor wrote: It is the application of demographics - presumably by a macro that appears to be the issue. This was obviously created by the transcription company with Word 2003 in mind. Whether it would be possible to improve that code is impossible to say without seeing it - and really that is a job for the company that provided it, so I will stick to attempting to make the function use Word 2003 rather than 2007. http://www.gmayor.com/Toolbars_in_word_2007.htm demonstrates how to set Word 2003 and 2007 to share the same platform without reconfiguring the registry each time one of them is run to grab the shared settings for itself.. You should then be able to associate doc and dot files through Windows Explorer Tools Folder Options File Types - DOC Advanced Open Edit and change the application used to perform the action to Word 2003, which by default should mean entering C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOFFICE11WINWORD.EXE /n /dde %1 in that space. Repeat for DOT, though this time edit the action for NEW - the application used to perform the action should be C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOFFICE11WINWORD.EXE /n /dde and the DDE message should be [REM _DDE_Direct][FileNew(%1)] In both examples if Word 2003 is installed in some other location than the default shown, change the paths to reflect that other location. -- Graham Mayor - Word MVP My web site www.gmayor.com Word MVP web site http://word.mvps.org
DeviousRedBaron wrote: Thanks so much, Graham! I have followed your instructions, but have not yet tested it with my company's software. I am going to test it out tomorrow. If there are any gliches, I will repost. If all goes well, would you mind if I pass this info on to my fellow MTs? (Medical transcriptionists.) I am sure there are numerous woman, and a few men, who could benefit greatly from your advise. I will await your response. Once again, thank you!!!!!
If it works for you, feel free to share with your colleagues. If double clicking a doc or dot file opens Word 2003 and not 2007 it should work with the company software - depending on how the company software calls Word.-- Graham Mayor - Word MVPMy web site www.gmayor.comWord MVP web site http://word.mvps.org
I hope this will help everyone! I know it helped me. I love typing in Word2007, but for now, I will have to type in Word 2003 until my company's software is compatible with it. At least I can have both programs running at the same time! The info on his web page about creating a toolbar is not necessary, unless it is something you need to do for Word 2007.

Word Expanders [2008-11-08]
I am looking for a word Expander to purchase and I was wondering if any of you have Instant Text Pro and how exactly does it work. Are there entries already in there? Also, what is the difference between Instant Text Pro and Shorthand. Thanks so much. Do you think Instant Text Pro is worth the money?

Expanderic vs Autocorrect? [2008-11-05]
I am not trying to cause a big fuss. I am just trying to learn more about Expanderic. Is it similar to autocorrect or does it have features like a suggestion line under the cursor or suggestions at the bottom of the screen. I really don'tsee much in the way ofan explanationof these features on the website so that makes me think that it does not have these features. Just curious Thanks
Can I transfer instant text word list to autocorrect?? [2008-11-02]
Hi all. Well I have a ton of entries stored in my Instant Text program. The problem is, that now that I am using Editscript version 8 instead of version 6, whenever I use my instant text program, it freezes up on me.. So I am just wondering, is there any way that I can transfer over my IT word lists over to autocorrect in microsoft word?? I think this is the only text Expander I can use with editscript 8. I really appreciate any help with this!!

Try uninstalilng norton and installing AVG free antivirus. Sometimes when norton upgrades they turn interfere with certain programs such as security. AVG is a free antivirus that can be found if you Google avg free - make sure you pick the free version. I have used it for sevearl years now and it has never interefered with interent (we have moved twice and had different providers) or with any of my platforms.
You are so right, I think [2008-12-03]
you speak for lots of MTs when pointing that out. This is a classic example of money-first, and people-who-make-me-that-money second.
Correct, and my sentiments exactly.. [2008-12-03]
Doesn't matter which natural or manmade disaster referenced, the fact remains our health information is going to someone who is not bound by law (as US health care providers are) to keep it confidential. As in your post, I don't give a rip if some greedy offshore MT has a job or not. We have heartbeats but we also have family to support.
Online education [2008-12-03]
I'm looking at a company called Future MT for online education. Does anyone know anything about them?
Importer [2008-12-03]
Hello,
IT V Pro is compatible with theMedrite program.
The Importer is a feature within Instant Text that can convert your SH, AutoCorrect, and other abbreviationfiles into IT glossaries. As it is a tool within the IT program, the platform you are using has no affect on how the Importer operates.
For more information regarding the Importer, please see the link below.

You can alsouse the spacebar to expand in Instant Text. You would type your expansion, hit the spacebar key and you would get your expansion just as you would in SH. For more information, please see the link below.

What? [2008-12-03]
Defending Indian MTs? What are you talking about? Do you think an MT in India would work for free? Highly doubt it sweetheart.
So you get a flash drive with voice files on it you are suppose to transcribe? [2008-12-03]
I'm trying to understand. Do you save the transcribed reports on the same jump drive? If that is the protocol, then wouldn't the MT before you typed any reports, then wouldn't they be saved to the flash drive?
If so, then you could open up the flash drive and if there are any Word files or text files, you open those up and see what they are. If they are transcribed reports, write the patient's name down and don't transcribe those notes.
Whatever the case may be, I would absolutely tell the office manager or whoever you are meeting with that you will type everything on the flash drive and that you expect to be paid for everything you type. You gave them freebies the last time and you're in this business to make money.
Verizon HSI, stating security no longer available [2008-12-03]
anyone else with Verizon high-speed internet? saying that we now have to pay an introductory rate of $1.99 per month for the first six months for continued security. my computer runs PC tools Spyware doctor and Norton protection center, which I assume was provided by Verizon. Is that what they're talking about discontinuing? anybody ???
I need some advice on starting my own small side business. sm [2008-12-02]
First of all, I have worked for several nationals in the past few years, and equipment has always been provided. I currently have a f/t position with a national that I use my own personal computer for, they just put their software on it. I had what I needed already, as far as foot pedal, Expander program, etc.
I have just been sort of rolling ideas around in my head about possibly starting up something small perhaps on a p.r.n. basis just to bring in a little extra income. As I am still just mulling this around in my mind, my questions are: How do I go about getting started? Do I try to purchase equipment first, or start out using tapes? I am worried about spending the money and not having any takers, so I am thinking, I should send out some sort of letters first; but, without having the equipment already, how do I tell them I plan on doing their transcription. Maybe mention tapes first, and tell them I have plans to go digital after I get up and running? These are all just things I wonder about. If anyone has any ideas, please feel free to email me with any advice.
I have been an MT for 16+ years, but as I said, I have always had all of the stuff provided for me and just don't know how to start.
Thanks in Advance!

I don't know of any platforms, but a lot of the places I have worked have used secure FTP to transfer wav files which were typed either in MS Word or Open Office. This would definitely be the most inexpensive method, and a lot of people already know how to use FTP and MS Word.
I have a resident this morning [2008-12-02]
who is literally spelling everything under the sun. All medications, the word supple, etc. He is driving me absolutely mad.
Not always. Not after numbers and colons. [2008-12-02]
Depends on your version. 97 did that after numbers and colons and MS took it away with 2000.
Useful!!! [2008-12-02]
Was searching for a psych word and got it on this site. The psych section is handy and so is the rest of the site. Here's the link.
eScription [2008-12-02]
I am currently using the eScription platform and don't seem to mind it at all. A lot of the docs aren't recognized yet, so it's stilly typing as usual. The ones that are you simply correct the typed report and it can be kind of fun, especially some of the things the computer comes up with!
There are a lot of new Keystrokes you can use to become mouse free as they hope, but I find I still use my mouse a lot!
Hope this helped...
Shorthand [2008-12-02]
When playing out your shortcut, do as you would for normal typing by holding down the shift keyof the first letter of the shortcut and it capitalize the first letter.. ShortHand will also expand all lower case entries into upper case simply by doing a caps lock. Hope this helps.
Which is better? [2008-12-02]
I currently use ShortHand and will be moving to a company that uses Instant Text with Medrite. Was told that my Shorthand could be converted somehow to use within Instant Text or I could use the Medrite expander. I really just want to use Shorthand, but if I cannot, does anyone know which way would be better -- to put my Shorthand expansions into the Instant Text or the Medrite system? When they do this, will my Shorthand basically work the same? Any info greatly appreciated.
I know. It is nuts. It's even [2008-12-02]
more nuts to read MTs on here defending poor little Indian MTs trying to steal our jobs. Maybe they'll see things differently when they get pink-slipped.
If it's ok with you if your health records [2008-12-02]
go to some filthy disgusting third-world country, at the expense of your own job and livelihood, be my guest. FYI HIPAA laws are only for this country. they can do whatever they want with your private health records. It's not just fires. The QA sucks, communication barriers suck, economic consequences of MTs who have lost their jobs BECAUSE of greedy Indian MTs,.... List goes on. Go ahead and be a bleeding heart, but don't be surprised when your job security stops beating as well.
Yes you are right, it's all about [2008-12-02]
the profits, both to the offshore MT companies and to the idiot doctors and hospitals that send work over there. Irritating that stupid mt with a heartbeat will defend these greedy clowns. You are right. I also have a problem with my records being handled in such a filthy backwards country.
Not just fires. Remember Katrina? [2008-12-02]
There could be a tornado. Yes, recordsare sometimeslost but that is NO REASON to send PHI to a stinking place like India or Pakistan or wherever. I could give a rip less whether an MT in India has ANY job or not and certainly not mine.
Instant Text and Shorthand (Reposting) [2008-12-02]
Is there a way to convert my ShortHand to Instant Text or merge the two so that I can use all my Shorthand entries on a new platform that only uses Instant Text? (Platform is Medrite.) Any help appreciated.
Any opinions about Instant Text also appreciated. I've used Shorthand my entire career and am really nervous about not being able to use it and having to use IT.
Instant Text can import your SH entries so you can continue [2008-12-02]
to use those shortcuts you are used to. IT can also import AutoCorrect and AutoText.
I used SH for a whole lot of years and switched to IT and have never looked back!
To: IT Fan [2008-12-02]
Thank you so much -- I do feel relieved. However, when I looked at the IT manual it seems complicated, with so many different choices. ShortHand looks basic and simple to use in comparison.
If you have the time to answer these questions I would really appreciate it:
1. When you made the switch and imported the Shorthand did you need to learn new commands or do anything different to expand your former Shorthand entries? (I just type an abbreviation and hit spacebar and get my expansion).
2. Did it take a lot of time to get used to IT?
3. As a former Shorthand user what were the biggest hurdles you found in making the switch?
4. Now that you've used IT do you prefer it to Shorthand and if so why?
Thanks again.
