Should I sell my Lanier? [2008-09-19]
I have an older Lanier transcribing machine. I do not plan on ever working for a company that uses it. I'm not officially selling it yet, just want feedback from my fellow MT's what I should do. I work after hours using regular mini-cassette tapes for local companies and another company uses Gear Player. If there's an MT that can use this one, I'd gladly help out! Thanks in advance...

Why waste money on Lanier [2008-09-10]

Lanier headphones [2008-09-10]
I bought mine at Dictation Warehouse. No problems whatsoever and shipped out very quickly. They do only carry 2 different kinds of Lanier headphones, though. So, depending on what you're looking for, they may not have it.

magicjack with Lanier or telephone line - sm [2008-08-14]
The magicjack did not work with my Lanier, and my friend has dial-up and it would not work for her WITHOUT transcribing equipment, just regular calls. I sent mine back the same day.

lanier voicewrite ex [2008-08-10]
Can anybody out there tell me how to unassign a job on a Lanier? Also is there a way to find jobs that u have signed off? Like a list of jobs? TIA

PT position requires Lanier dictaphone but I have VDI 3006 Digital SuperStation [2008-07-28]
Can I use a VDI 3006 Digital SuperStation when the job calls for Lanier dictaphone? I read a post that said Super Station could be used in place of Lanier but not the other way around. And, if not...Do you think I should purchase a Lanier Dictaphone in order to get a PT job which sounds promising? It would be a fast return on my investment and I could use it in the future.

Help with Lanier machine! [2008-07-26]
I pulled out my old Lanier machine to work for a company I worked for previously and I forgot how to set it to go back a couple of seconds when I take my foot off the pedal. I tried Googling,,found nothing.. Does anybody know? thanks

Lanier [2008-07-07]
Lanier is one of the oldest, slowest, clunkiest systems around. I actually quit a job that was paying me 11 cpl on Lanier and took one for 9-3/4 on WAV and am making waaaay more on the WAV account. Lanier stinks.

Lanier is the best [2008-07-06]
Any transcription product with Lanier on the name is #1 in my book.

I know a company that would love to have you. Feel free to e-mail me.

Lanier head set [2008-06-06]
The old standby Lanier headset which is specifically made for MTs is really still the most reliable and best choice for MTs. It's specifically made for our needs. It is certainly not fancy and the style of it has not changed and its very basic and no frills. You can get little spongy things for ear buds and they help some. Take your head set off between jobs like when you spell check and proof, that helps.

Magic Jack with Lanier Voicewriter? sm [2008-06-06]
I've read posts stating C-phones possibly work with Magic Jack. However, has anyone successfully used Magic Jack with a Lanier Voicewriter, or has anyone tried that? TIA

I use Lanier headphones that have a volume adjuster on the cord. (nm) [2008-05-27]

lanier voicewrite ex [2008-04-16]
Hi guys! anybody out there using Lanier voicewrite ever have issues with the foot pedal cutting out dictation and when you press play, it plays dictation for a little while and then cuts, then when you press listen/play again, nothing.................?

Lanier [2008-04-16]
Sometimes they get sensitive and can do that, or also not give a full visual read-out in the window. When that happens, the tech tells us to fully power it down, totally unplug from its power source (from the wall, etc.) and let it sit for a full 5 minutes. This cools the unit down and since they are preprogramed which also includes programming of your footpedal, this allows the preprogramming to come back to its original state. Mine does stuff like that about every month or so. Most of them are pretty old. Also, you may have to get technical support if powering down does not work, to check your pedal settings. Hope this helps. I know these old dinosaurs get fussy sometimes.

lanier voicewrite ex [2008-04-14]
Hi all. I just purchased an used Lanier voicewrite ex, but no instructions came on how to hook up the wiring. Could anybody please share with me how to hookup the wiring? TIA Bree

Lanier/cable phone [2008-04-12]
I'm guessing you're in the west as you mentioned Qwest before. I use cable phone through Cable One with my Lanier and have had absolutely no problems with my minutes being truly unlimited. I have also had no problem with sound quality. It only has gone out once this year during a storm and they had it back up pretty fast.

Lanier station with Comcast Digital [2008-04-12]
I have used this for quite some time with no problems. I have also used a C-phone and Voice Solutions Digital Workstation with Comcast and it works just fine. The only thing you may have a problem with is having dictation cut out periodically or what sounds like choppy dictation (and this occurs VERY rarely) and all you have to do is disconnect the phone lines and power from the back of the device you are using, wait a few minutes and plug back in and it should work. Other than that, NO problems!

Lanier station w/Comcast digital voice [2008-04-11]
Will this work? A couple of years ago I tried a Lanier with Vonage and it didn't. I don't want to gothrough the setup trouble only to be disappointed again. I really need more minutes than my 5000 per month with Qwest.Has the technology changed to make the Lanier compatible with internet phone service? Thanks if you can help me.

VONAGE AND LANIER [2008-03-17]
I just was needing some input regarding the use of Vonage and Lanier.....I am having some problems with this and was wondering if there was anyone with some advice on whether this is possible or not???? and if YES it is possible, what advice do you have or what do I need to do?? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Vonage and Lanier [2008-03-17]
Did you just start using Vonage with Lanier? I assume you have Vonage for unlimited long distance. I started on a Lanier account at MDI a year ago and was told that some people had had problems with Vonage and Lanier working together, but they found that if you had a Motorola (if memory serves correctly) Vonage router it should work. I opted instead to switch my home phone to cable phone with unlimited local and long distance and it works great. Never have had a problem with minutes.

Lanier question. [2008-02-11]
Is it possible to use one Lanier machine for two separate jobs? Would I need to program the machine each time? TIA.:) (((Hugs)))

Lanier vs C-Phone - sm [2008-01-31]
Unfortunately for your desk space, they cannot be used interchangeably. They are two separate dictating systems, although they basically perform for the MT the same way. What is dictated on Lanier system cannot be accessed with a C-phone and vice versa, but I don't know the technical jargon for why this is so. I, too, have accounts on the two separate systems, have two foot pedals under my desk, and have to shuffle the machines around and plug in the phone line when switching over. You get use to it after a while. Hope this helps.

I''ll bet you will like Lanier.. [2008-01-31]
better. It's fasterand you can see the job information on the screen. It seems to be getting more and more difficult to find work with Lanier. Consider yourself lucky. The disadvantage with Lanier 219 is that it is a little more trouble to hook up and takes up more space.

Google

speakers [2008-12-04]
I've always used the metal Lanier type headphones and they've been great, but I just tried a pair of Sony digital reference headphones for listening to music. They are a little heavy on your head, but the sound quality is wonderful.. you hear things you couldn't before. Having the speakers on just seems to muffle voice for me and I tend not to hear as well. So, next to the Sonys, I would use the metal earphones.Hope this helps.

"Listening ahead" doe NOT mean "stopping." [2008-10-11]
I'm not sure what you mean by listening ahead, but if it's the listening ahead mentioned elsewhere here as one of my recommendations, it does not mean you stop dead and listen, then rewind and type. It's not even listen-then-stop-and-type. That would be a waste of time, as well as unnecessary. It means that you listen to the upcoming dictation WHILE YOU TYPE what you just heard. You listen far enough ahead (about half a sentence) that you can understand the context and can catch changes. It is much more efficient to transcribe it correctly the first time. By listening ahead, you avoid typing the nonsensical material that typically results from listening and typing one word at a time. Older MTs working on typewriters with carbon packs with old Lanier transcribers that had no auto-backspace were forced to avoid any errors at all due to the difficulty in changing anything. Literally, the entire page would need to be retyped for anything more than a small error, and you did not want to be unrolling the carbon pack in order to scrape the errors off every page. (You had to use a scalpel or a very sharp knife.) You also had to listen far enough ahead to stop in a pause in the dictation, because every time you stopped, a few words would drop out between where you started to stop and where the tape finally got going again. When computers and digital transcribers came along, it was so easy to correct errors and so much easier to transcribe without those words falling out that MTs began learning to transcribe in an inefficient manner. Now, it's very common and it looks as though people are teaching it that way. I am not old enough to have learned on typewriters, but I did have the unhappy experience of having to use a ancient Lanier transcriber for a while. The light dawned on me when an employer installed an electronic document system that had no medical spellchecker, would not allow use of my productivity software, and which took an ridiculous amount of time to make even the smallest correction. It cut everyone's line counts in half. The facility did not adjust our productivity one whit to compensate. In self-defense, I decided to try to learn to listen way far ahead as I'd known some really ancient MTs to do and to type so slowly that I made NO errors and thus had to make no corrections. Within days, I had not only returned to my former productivity, but had increased it by 200-400 lines per hour . . . without an expander. I was typing at a leisurely, relaxed pace, too. A lot of MTs have tried this and most report that it helps them.

Independent contractor [2008-09-27]
I have worked for this PT company for 4 years and he has always paid on time, never a problem with paycheck and I personally knew him when he was a salesman for Lanier, so I am comfortable with him. It is a big step to take and he a 5-year contract with hospital so there is plenty of work. I am a pretty organized person, but if it was not for that darn insurance. Someone told me that the company that I am working for FT will have open enrollment in November and they are changing to a new insurance but you have to be producing 1000 lines a day to qualify. With their platform it takes around a 10-hour work day just to get to the 800 lines. That is what we all thought, 800--no problem. Boy did we have a rude awakening, everyone is struggling. It basically boils down to how much of a hassle for doing own taxes very peace of mind and get back to what I really like to do without someone dinging for every little comma, semicolon, hyphen and incorrect verbage. I am a good MT but here lately I am beginning to doubt just about everything I type and I am always having my head in the BOS. I have been doing this for 29 years, but I do feel like I am just coming out of English class and just a newbie which is not a good feeling at my age and exp. I want to like to do my job but right now not feeling that. Thanks for input all.

Disappointing service at Martel Electronics [2008-09-10]
How disappointing to have received such poor service from Martel -- a company we all rely upon for their great products! The new headset I ordered arrived damaged/defective with an improperly coated wire making the headset useless. When I called I was informed that not only would I be charged a restocking fee, I would have to pay to have the defective product returned. Only after inspection would a new one be sent -- and that would be another wait of 10 to 14 days. Repeated requests to speak with a supervisor got me nowhere. I ultimately disputed the charge on my credit card and wrote to the Better Business Bureau. How unfortunate that the only supplier of the Lanier headphones is so unresponsive to their customers!

Best headphones EVER.... [2008-09-10]
One morning I was taking a shower and my chihuahua decided to make my headphones her breakfast (actually got into my computer chair and took them from the desk...pretty impressive feat). Out of desperation, I jacked the headphones from my daughter's CD player to see if they'd work. The audio was great, the earpieces actually fit over your ears so they don't rub, and I rocked those headphones doing my transcription until she discovered they were missing and took them back. Rather than spending all that money on a Lanier headset, if you have kids, borrow a pair of their headsets. You might be surprised at the results!!!

Vonage [2008-07-31]
I have had Vonage for several years. I have had two jobs on two separate occasions that used Lanier machines. In both cases, the Lanier would work for 3 or 4 months, then all of a sudden it would stop working correctly, anywhere from the footpedal not working right to the programming getting deleted, to the machine not accepting my log in information. There does not seem to be a fix to this problem. I have talked to several IT people, and all they can suggest is to reboot your modem, Vonage device and Lanier and see if that helps. I know that it has helped some people for awhile to do this, but it has never helped me.

Vonage [2008-07-15]
I had MagicJack and my pedal for the Lanier stopped working a couple of weeks ago. I was told to purchase Vonage. Well, I did and it was working fine. Now, today, my pedal is no longer working. Is there anyone else with this problem?

PATHOLOGY MT [2008-07-07]
I work in Pathology and have for the last 29 years. I work for a major medical center and we are currently using Cerner CoPath Laboratory information System. We use a digital dictating/transcription system by MedQuest formerly Lanier.

Lanier [2008-07-07]
Lanier is one of the oldest, slowest, clunkiest systems around. I actually quit a job that was paying me 11 cpl on Lanier and took one for 9-3/4 on WAV and am making waaaay more on the WAV account. Lanier stinks.

Best headphones [2008-07-06]
Yamaha speakers with a Lanier head set should give you the best acoustics for voice MT. Many MTs go with the fancy headsets but most are made for music and not specifically for MT. That EQ is for music quality not for ESL dictation. You need a basic MT head set that resembles a stethoscope in architecture. These are still the best for hearing dictation.

Lanier is the best [2008-07-06]
Any transcription product with Lanier on the name is #1 in my book.

resume [2008-07-05]
What I have found to be a constant problem in placing ads for positions is indeed the resume. I know that they say you only get one chance to make a first impression but a resume IS your one chance. If you are asked to paste to email only and download it instead, you have already lost. If you are listing your experience in Cardiology, Radiology, etc and capitalizing items in the resume that should not, you are have lost. Our profession calls for precise knowledge of things capped and not capped, hyphen, none, etc. So if a resume is a reflection of the person then as an MTSO not sitting and interviewing you in person, you have a resume in hand to go by. It should be as close to perfect as can be. Giving away age is as simple as stating you have worked in WP 5.1 or 6.1. AND some companies, mine included will eagerly look for those experiences because it shows you have been around a while and know the field. When you get say 200 resumes for a position, you have to whittle down the responses so you first go by the appearance of the resume, and by that I do not mean something aesthetically pleasing, but use of grammar and caps. Then I check for qualifications...if I asked for experienced only apply and they dont have experience, circular file. If I ask for specific background or equipment and they dont have it, circular file. There is always a method to getting down to the people that are qualified and testing those people, but it is a long and time consuming process. To respond back to all resumes is time consuming and to do it in a timely matter is difficult so process of elimination is utmost. Does your resume show a lot of short-term jobs? I look for that because I believe most companies are looking for long-term IC not fly-by-night, so again, there are many things a resume tells a person. Does it list the equipment you OWN?? I dont care much for what equipment you may be able to work, but own yes. In this day of computers and Dictaphone, Lanier, voice files, etc, a company asking for specifics, like owning Lanier or Dictaphone want to be able to see that reflected on the resume. I have probably sent out 200 emails asking about equipment, even though my ad clearly states 'MUST HAVE' I will get 100 resumes from people that dont have the equipment, dont have the experience, have never even transcribed or taken a course. So do not just assume that we KNOW you meet our requirements listed because you apply, we may have to ask if it is not on a resume. The resumes I like the most are short and to the point.. name, add, phone number, email and cell phone course work or where you learned transcription. I truly do not care what grade school you went to, high school or college. If it does not pertain to MT work then frankly it doesn't help to know you are an Honor Student from some college. That will NOT GET THE REPORT TRANSCRIBED CORRECTLY. work experience - and start with most current going back. I dont want to read your jobs from 1800 and work my way up. I want to see where YOU ARE NOW in this field and work my way back. We all start somewhere, were a newbie once, but at the time of hiring, I need to see how FAR you have come. reference materials- yes they help, being able to Google something is fine, but having a reference source at hand to know the caps, not capped, etc, is important. Google has things done so many ways it is not always the most precise for that purpose. equipment OWNED - like own Dictaphone, Lanier, computer, fax - is it dedicated or shared - computer, etc. platforms worked, i.e. Citrix, Star, HBO. Meditech, RadTrans, that type of thing. WHAT I DONT CARE TO READ IN A RESUME hobbies - could care less about your bowling experience or knitting projects....they have nothing to do with work movies you like jobs that did NOT pertain to MT work. I dont care if you were a great bartender or worked third shift for Motorola for 10 years. I DO CARE about things that pertain to what I am hiring for. When an ad stats looking for STEADY, RELIABLE MT, that means just that...so if I see you had 10 jobs in 5 years, the word steady kinda goes out the door. If I email you back once and no answer, could be glitch, twice and not answer, reliable is wavering now also. There are a lot of variables to WHY a resume is not responded to.IfI have tosift through a bunch of stuff that does NOT pertain to whatI am looking for,I dont,I move on.Without seeing yours I cant say why, but I hope this helps a little bit. Tiffany

Lanier [2008-07-03]
I am trying to find out what are the advantages/disadvantages of Lanier versus other platforms? Harder/easier? Outdated/up-to-date?

I'm not sure if they have any more [2008-07-02]
right now to rent. They do have other accounts, though, that are all internet. The Meditech/Lanier is the hardest to find help for. You can find the flexibility that you need with this company, pay is always on time, etc. Want more info?

unfortunately [2008-07-01]
I don't have a Lanier, do have Meditech experience but it would definitely have to be a refresher - does the company supply/rent Lanier?

Magic Jack - sm [2008-06-22]
