You can buy a VGA adapter at Best Buy (plugs in USB) that you can hook a second Monitor...... without having to install a new video card. As for good prices on Monitor......k ebay. I'm getting ready to buy my third one!!!

my problem is that my keyboard shelf only allows space for the keyboard and I love this desk - is a corner desk - now with more constant use of mouse my shoulder aches because it is higher- I have to figure out how to make space for the mouse - any suggestions? Need a man to jigsaw me an extension, I guess.

according to them. This is VR and there is nothing paywise in for the MTs, nothing else except we are supposed to use certain keys instead of mouse. I hit over 500 the other day for an hour If the VR is good, no straight typing, I can bump up the audio to fast and can make it yo-yo. Anyone else being monitored??
Anyone successful with full screen monitor sm [2007-09-11]

A KVM switch would let you use 2 pc's, 1 monitor and 1 mouse. [2007-08-29]
It's a pretty reasonably priced piece of equipment, I think around $50. By using hot keys, you switch from 1 pc to the other.
monitor [2007-08-02]
i used to have this happen, and with mine, it was not a precursor to going out. But i can't remember what supposedly caused it -- power surge, interference?? but in my case, led to no other problems.

When?? When my cell phone is near by and something goes on with it, like a message comes through via email (I have a BlackBerry now). What brand of LCD monitor to buy? sm [2007-07-17]
I am really troubled byeye strain ... got new computer glasses from eye doc but still not happy ... a number of people have said I should swap my CRT Monitor......or a flat screen LCD. I'm game to do it, but have been reading reviews until I'm brain-dead! Thought maybe you folks heremight share what brand of LCD you are using, and if you are happy with it for word processing. I hear some are better for text than others, and I don't want to shell out the bucks without looking into it. TIA!

computer/monitor question [2007-06-06]
I would like to switch out my CRT Monitor...... flat screen LCD Monitor......advice? My hard drive works fine, just looking to clear up some space on my desk, and be a little kinder to my eyes. Will I need to get any special adapters? I do not want to purchase anything that is not a necessity. TIA
Well I DO need a big monitor... [2007-03-26]

Monitor question [2007-03-25]
I have an Acer desktop which came with standard Monitor...... go larger screen, will it work well? I was given a Dell Monitor......lugged it into my Acer and all it did was flicker and give me big trouble. I have never tried flat screen but hate to spend money on something that won't be compatible. Could I also plug it into my laptop and have it work?
Monitor [2007-03-24]
Yes! Yes! Yes! I recently got a flat-screen and I love, love, love it. I have a Sceptre which I bought at Wal-Mart for about $150.00. Best thing I ever did. It really cut down on my headaches. Get a flat-screen. You will not be sorry. I promise. :)
Monitor recommendation [2007-03-24]

? switching monitors to flat panel sm [2008-12-03]
I have ordered a flat screen Monitor......Dell and will be switching from a 14 inch dinosaur to a 17 inch flat screen on an Acer tower. I just wonder if I am going to have problems or does it adjust itself without problems. Need more desk space. TIA
It should adjust itself sm [2008-12-03]
but you can adjust screen setting size by right clicking on your desk top, go down to properties, and then over to settings. There is an option for screen resolution size that can make the appearance of the screen larger, smaller, etc. Typically for the larger screens you want the higher resolutions. You'll love having a bigger monitor.
Perhaps I am mistaken, but thought I saw a Dell with both sm [2008-12-01]
With today being cyber Monday they will be very busy but if they can help you, perhaps you would get a break. I got one today on a Monitor......them. I could be wrong though but I am sure I saw a computer that had both, ????
Great website [2008-11-23]
Its 1am so will have to read more tomorrow when I'm more awake. I had heard about chemicals from computers, but thought that was only occuring when people are making the computers. I have a flat screen Monitor......t's suppose to not emit the same stuff as regular Monitor......sorry, can't think of all the names of the things right now).
It's funny I came across this post because today DH told me about how TVs are emitting chemicals or something that are making people numb or something like that. I'm trying to find more info about that.
Thanks for the website
WARNING: TOTH TRANSCRIPTION [2008-11-18]
Hello! It's been a while since I have been on this board. I'm still receiving e-mails from MTs telling me that they have been taken advantage of by Toth Transcription. From what I understand, Toth is now advertising on www.craigslist.comfor new MTs to apply with them.
Every time I receive an e-mail from another MT, she tells me how she has not been receiving her paychecks, and how after many attempts at contacting the Toths, she hasnot received any replies to her e-mails or return phone calls.
It's no less than criminal what they are doing to people, and the more people that come forward with their experiences, the better our chances are at putting them out of business.
I can't stress enough how underhanded and manipulative their hiring process is, and how abusive they are to their MTs.
If you don't want to see them get away with this anymore, you have to act on this, and warn anybody and everybody about TOTH TRANSCRIPTION in Wexford, PA.
They prey on newbies fresh out of school, and out-of-state applicants, because they know that as long as you are out of state, you have no recourse to go after them to get your money.
****** I am in touch with other MTs who have been put through the wringer by Toth, and they are fighting back tooth and nail. Don't feel hopeless and helpless, that is what they are counting on. Stand up for yourself and get fighting mad.

Yes, but with some reservations sm [2008-11-14]
You have to be careful of two platforms that are actually Word clients, and you can't have two versions of the same software on your computer either.
I was working on Extext and found that I could not work with MTWorld and Extext. Extext has a DocQnet file or something like that which will interfere with SOME other Word clients. Inscribe and Extext were not a problem. Currently, I am working in Extext and MedRite. I managed to injure my company computer and it is not out of the shop yet. I had to work last weekend and I mean NOW. The techies installed Extext on the same computer as my MedRite and I have had absolutely no issues...as long as I reboot between sessions of one or the other. MedRite to Extext is okay, but not Extext to MedRite, if that makes sense.
MedRite and MTWorld, no problem. MedRite and Emdat Inscribe, no problem. Extext, if that is one of your platforms, is likely to be the problem if there is one.
Now, you CAN work on 2 computers and have only one Monitor......set of speakers, one mouse and one keyboard. You get something called a KVM. DO NOT buy a Belkin unless you like to splash out $70 every 3 months. The best price I found was newegg.com and I think I paid about $19 for mine. I bought the highest rated brand on there and it is USB too.
About KVMs...you can buy them that are PS/2, but please don't. They are phasing out PS/2 ports in computers and your ability to get PS/2 peripherals will diminish. Everything is going to USBs, so get a USB. You also cannot use a PS/2 to USB adapter with a KVM, you have to have all USBs. Might be a problem for you, but you know about this going in now. I learned the hard way, so I am sharing my mistake for your benefit!
KVMs mean far less desk clutter. Mine, you hit Control twice and you switch between computers. The emulation on this one is like 3 seconds, which means I don't wait for the switcharoo for very long. I can almost pop from one to the other with no lag time.
It has been a long odyssey [2008-11-09]
One of the things I thought might be a good alternative to mousing was the HP Touchsmart computer, which did not work out as well as I had hoped, but now I'm stuck with it. It is a really cool machine, but I do not use the touch screen much at all. I use a rolling laptop desk that I purchased from Wal-Mart (I think it was $69, ordered on-line and picked up at the store). The Touchsmart is a computer/Monitor......e and it's pretty heavy, but the laptop desk does hold the weight (barely). I do have to be very careful rolling it to and fro, but if you've got a flatscreen Monitor......ure it would do fine (although you would probably have to be just as careful due to it being so lightweight).
Funny how some folks are about helping others out. A lady I have done some work for was like that and I just never understood why (mostly not sharing templates that she already had made up for the doctors I was working on for her), especially considering how willing and happy I was to share much information with her (like she was not even familiar with using AutoCorrect for expansions, forget about Expander programs).
What comes around goes around, I suppose. Please forgive my rant!
Oh man, where do I start? SM [2008-10-24]
1. Space heater (inWinter) orfan (inSummer)at my feet, heating pad on my lap to warm my hands (all year long).
2. My Harley-Davidson mug with ice and three cans of Coke.
3. Chair must be centered in relation to the Monitor......y butt has to be centered in the chair! It takes me at least 10 minutes to make these adjustments. My chair is always at the right height, in my house if you adjust mom's chair you DIE!
4.Back scratcher.
5.CNN or Headline News on in the background.
This question made me smile. All my years working in the office I have met more MTs than I can tell you that are so particular about their work space. God help you if you had to share a desk with one of them! Then you realize you ARE one of them!
Ohhh and the CHAIR ! sm [2008-10-24]
Around here, you SIT on mom's chair and you die a slow and PAINFUL death! I gotta have the Monitor...... in front of me and my chair exactly positioned in front of the Monitor......ion before I start, always. I laughed...back scratcher? A MUST. Kleenex? A MUST. I like old movies in the background while I work, but this week I have not even turned on the tube.
I gotta have Q-tips for MT's ear which I always seem to have.
ahaha, everything in its place [2008-10-24]
I know where everything is, but my desk is a total pit. I have stacks of bills in one spot that are unpaid and when they get paid are moved to another stack. i have a camera and stapler in front of the Monitor......ve to have the headset going across the TOP of the keyboard, not on it, but up around the top of it and down the side. I simply cannot type any other way. :) I have wires going everywhere, fax machine and phone to my left, laptop and docking station to my right. sticky notes everywhere. Funny, i know if something is missing or if someone has been here. I so wish i could take a pic and send it to you! you would die!...lets seeeee, i have a cappuccino squeezed between my left arm and the fax. today, my cell phone is resting on top of the stapler....oh man, its bad...But the one thing that absolutely HAS to be in the same exact spot is my foot pedal. i get irrate if someone moves it.
Large Macros [2008-10-24]
Can anyone tell me how to Monitor......er making a whole report macro is worthwhile? I have quite a few, but I cannot decide if it is worth it or not. I end up having to make changes and delete things. Often seems like kind of a toss up and wonder if anyone has any guidelines for this or has experiemented with any specific result.
Thanks for any help you can give me!
Thanks, but [2008-09-19]
I have notes (on Monitor......lsewhere), white boards, email files, Expander notes ... it's just that there are so many little goofy things that it ends up being overkill and too time consuming to look or even make notes on some of it. If I do all the accounts regularly, I can keep the extras in my head, but after a few weeks of not having one or two of them ... I can't remember. Or, something unique only comes up every now and then.
These are all good ideas (and I basically use them all except an Excel file). I guess I will just keep on keeping on. I probably should re-read everything when I realize a couple of weeks has gone by of not doing an account, but I do enough other extras for work in my off time, so I have trouble making myself bother.
Oh, the joys! :)
Try this... [2008-09-18]
I have the sides of my Monitor......apered with Post-Its that have reminders for each account, as well as a bulletin board. I print off any pertinent emails, highlight the change, and keep it within easy reach while transcribing. It makes things a little easier than having to dig around through emails. You can keep all of the specifics for a certain account together by tacking the pages to a bulletin board, too.
I tend to get very disorganized and overwhelmed, so I find doing this type of thing helps to keep me a bit more organized and make my life a little easier while I'm working.
Good luck to you :-).
Sitting [2008-09-15]
When I started transcribing, I had a lot of problems with sitting. I am a pretty fidgety person, so I can't usually work without at least a 5-minute stretch every hour, 2 hours at the absolute most. I did a lot of research into office ergonomics, & one of the most helpful things I found was this:
Q: What is the best sitting position?
A: The next one.
So I try to not stay locked in one position for a long time.
Also when I first started working, I started getting 4th & 5th digit numbness. This can be an ulnar nerve compression or a disk problem. I tried to look at how I was positioned at my desk, & what I discovered is this: The higher my Monitor......worse my neck pain was, because the more I would round my back & crunch my neck (chin jutting). There are a lot of places selling things that lift the Monitor......r, & this is the exact opposite of what I needed. Also I need to have my knees lower than my hips in order to avoid the tendency to round my back.
The chin jutting/back rounding was pretty obvious, but I wasn't sure what was going on with my wrists. Anyway, I took the shotgun approach kneeling chair, (I removed the knee rests but use it for the seat tilt), and a Kinesis keyboard. My chair does not have any back rest at all, & yet I am so well balanced that I am very comfortable without it. I had some wedge-shaped foam cut and occasionally I use this as a seat cushion. It helps maintain the hip tilt & gives my butt a rest.
After I made these changes, my numbness disappeared completely in a couple of weeks and has never come back, & I've been doing this work for around 6 years with the same setup.
Can't help you with the hair loss issue.
Hope this helps.
Hair and feet [2008-09-15]
My feet swell a lot after sitting all day, so I also make sure I get up for at least 5 minutes every hour and stretch. I stretch my arms, shoulders, legs, etc. and walk around to get some circulation going. This does help.
My eyes started going too, so when the headaches were everyday, even just glancing at the Monitor......ew it was time to make the visit to the eye doctor. I found an excellent doctor close by my house that knew what he was doing, as I had been to another doctor that screwed me. There is such a thing as computer glasses and the doc spent much time with me asking questions on what I do, how close to the Monitor...... The first day of using my new glasses, no headaches! I had visited the other doctor and was told I had computer glasses but after showing them to the new doc, he said they were nothing but regular glasses with not even a prescription in them.
For your hair falling out, I have scalp psoriasis, so when my stress level increases, my hair falls out even more. I have been under tremendous stress lately and actually have handfuls at once coming out. I have been to the doc, had all the tests done to make sure it wasn't thyroid or anything strange. I would suggest you see your doc and make sure of that too and go from there.
Best of luck!
Oh, but..... [2008-09-15]
I also have fibromyalgia, too, so wanted to clarify that not all my aches and pains come from this work. I, too, have my seat just right - I have it at a height that my knees are a little lower than my behind and it is at the height where my arms are straight, wrists on a mat, and typing without much of a bend in my wrist at all. My Monitor......wer, not straight in front of me. My head is tilted down just an inch or two. It works for me!
Yes, you are right... [2008-08-19]
You are right on the RAM issue. Go to www.crucial.com. There you will be able to enter your brand, model, etc. of your computer. It will give you the type, maximum installable RAM, and number of slots for RAM. If I were you, I would pop the side off of the computer and take a quick look yourself to make sure there is an available slot(s). At the point where it gives you all of the specifics, you will also see the option to by the RAM from Crucial. They have a good price on RAM, so if you could order it right from them if you wanted.
As far as the multiple windows, I would absolutely recommend a second Monitor......s as easy as plugging in another video card to the computer (maybe popping in a driver disk when asked) and plugging the second Monitor......heck out
http://www.surpluscomputers.com/store/main.aspx?p=ItemDetailitem=MON10018
for an awsome deal on cheap LCD's. Maybe not too pretty, but definitely affordable.
Anyway, that's what I would do.
Oops... [2008-08-19]
Okay, yes I know it is buy and not by. Also, I should have said plug the video card into the motherboard, not the computer. Also, make sure that you get the correct video card that corresponds with your Monitor......er VGA-analogue or DVI-digital).
Definitely recommend second monitor [2008-08-19]
You can buy a VGA adapter at Best Buy (plugs in USB) that you can hook a second Monitor...... without having to install a new video card. As for good prices on Monitor......k ebay. I'm getting ready to buy my third one!!!
$7600????? [2008-08-16]
Is there a local community college nearby? You can get all the training you need without that price tag. Or see if a local hospital is offering training.
Night ward clerks at hospitals tend to make better pay, if that is an option for you. My daughter had a friend who was only 19 at the time who worked night shift at a local hospital by Monitor......U patients. If a Monitor......off, she notified someone. Boring job but it helped pay her way through college. Got paid really well.
Keyboard Tray [2008-07-22]
Hi,
I wanted to get some opinions on a keyboard tray. I am using an ergonomic split keyboard that rests on my desktop. I use wrist braces, and some days my wrists still ache. I wanted the opinion of anyone who had used a keyboard tray versus not and if there was a difference. Is there such a tray that you don't have do drill into your desk to attach it? Any benefits that justify the cost of the tray? I have my Monitor......Monitor...... to help prevent neck strain. That seems to help. Just looking for any ideas to help save my wrists.
Thanks in advance!
Here's what I have done [2008-06-19]
Report them to your state's Attorney General's office, the Federal Trade Commission, then call your and their local sheriff's departments and ask if you may have a fraud situation - make sure you get the company name in there when asking (make sure you get names if speaking over the phone). When finished with this, send the company a certified letter letting them know who you have reported to, including names of individuals you spoke to, departments, etc. and give them a time limit to pay before you continue with further legal action.
You will get a letter from the FTC stating that unless your complaint is widespread and includes a lot of people, they cannot take action but will keep your report and Monitor......ther complaints. Hello permanent record.
The Attorney General's office will check them out with the state to see if there are other complaints and send you a letter. They may also send them a letter. Hello permanent record.
The sheriff's department may tell you they do or do not think you have a fraud situation, but regardless will keep the company name and check them out for suspicious other complaints. Hello permanent record.
This may all seem futile and time consuming, but trust that when you involve the big guns (which is why you need names), you will be paid posthaste. All of this will be a permanent record tied to their business name. Bad news for them, your owed finances for you. Most of them think we poor little independents have no resources - just not true.
Sorry so lengthy - could go into more actually, but won't bore you. Oh - DO report to the BBB. Future clients WILL look there.
You need to get a KVM switch. [2008-06-08]
This allow you to hook up two towers to one Monitor......you do is hit the scroll lock twice and it switches between computers. Hope that helps.
Monitor...... [2008-05-16]
