keyboard [2008-12-03]
Does anyone know of a keyboard to use that the numbers and letters will not wear off? I have an ergonomic splitkeyboard that I got and a week later the letters were already disappearing. Now, almost all my keys are blank.Any ideas??
Keyboard text stuck "on" [2008-12-03]
I hope someone can help me. I was trying to print the computer screen and for some reason could not and my husband came to help me and somehow he got the desktop text that normally shows up under the desktop icons to be stuck in the onposition. Does anyone know how to turn them off? My husband does not even know what he did to get them that way. We never were able to print the screen. If anyone can tell me how to turn off these desktop texts, please let me know. Just in case this helps, I have Windows XP PRO and a Microsoft erganomic keyboard. Thank you all in advance.
Keyboard Opinions - Avant versus Kinesis [2008-11-18]
I am faced with a decision between these 2 keyboards, both with pros and cons. I would like to take a survey to see what everyone's opinion would be. I strongly prefer a programmable keyboard, as I would like to change some of the keys around to suit me, but will I regret not having an ergo keyboard in the long run? Will I like the IBM clicky type keys?

Looks interesting....
My hands/wrists can't take it anymore...I have to do something. I wake up with tingling and numbness in my fingers every morning.I know I'm headed towards carpal tunnel if I don't have it already.
If someone has used this or anything similar and could give me some advice,it would be much appreciated! Thanks so much!
Distance from keyboard [2008-10-29]
Lately I can't seem to get comfortable with my distance from the keyboard or where my chair is. Any good general rules on this? I don't seem to like my chair centered (not sure why) and had marked the spot where I like it with tape (marked the specific leg and the spot I like the wheel), but lately it doesn't feel right.
I noticed, too, that I have been pulling my keyboard closer and closer to the point some movements are hard to do. When I become aware of it, it does feel weird, but then when I push it back, that doesn't feel right either.
Good grief! - (Not sure what this little guy is doing, but I think I can relate. Lol)
How to replace letters on keyboard? (sm) [2008-10-20]
The letters on my keyboard get rubbed off within a couple of weeks of buying the darn things (just bought a new Microsoft ergonomic keyboard 2 weeks ago and already the A is half gone). Is there anyway to buy replacement letters for these darn things? Or do they make white sharpie markers?
I end up replacing the stupid keyboard at least yearly because after the letters are worn off, I find I wear grooves into the keys. This is ridiculous.
Thanks in advance!

How to replace letters on keyboard [2008-10-20]
I have the same problem. I have worn 11 of mine off and my keyboard is new too. I am going to try that keyboard sticker idea. Anything is worth a try. My husband and son also use my keyboard from time to time and they fuss about those missing keys. Thanks for the idea. I will try. I do not use any lotion on my hands when I type. They just do not make them like they used to.
DUH ... yes of course I do ... however, since my daughter uses this keyboard also I want letters! :( [2008-10-20]

Meditech keyboard template [2008-09-22]
I think that is what I would need. I saw an advertisement for Magic Overlay and I am not sure what it does either. The description was not very good. Since I am an IC for this company that does work for this hospital I have never been given a keyboard template for Meditech. Do you know where I could get one? I will look on the Internet too. Thanks.
Ergonomic Chair [2008-09-16]
A good chair is a MUST. If you're using one of your dining chairs, you're neck and lower backare going to start giving you painful lectures! I got my task chair years ago from Office Max -adjustable tilt seat, adjustable heightback rest, height of chair itselfadjusts of course. Best $200 I ever spent. You can probably find something similar that is usedand reasonably pricedin your neighborhood Craigslist listings.Good luck!
put the cord under the keyboard [2008-09-15]
I run my headphone cord from the computer, under the keyboard, under my wrist mat, and right up in front of me. It is totally out of the way. Maybe you can try that til you can get the wireless ones.

conflict of keyboard commands [2008-09-05]
thanks, i'll check into that--my only concern is that the platform I work from for another job pulls the sound file into windows media so I'm just hoping using express scribe doesn't screw it up....I've been told of express scribe before, guess I'd better give it a look.. Thanks again~!
conflict of keyboard commands [2008-09-04]
Hi there, I would really appreciate somehelp here...I am transcribing on a word document, the sound file has been e-mailed to me, I am listening to the dictation in Windows Media Player. I don't have my footpedal working with this---but am just trying to use keyboard commands and when I do, the keyboard commands are being utilized by the word program. In other words, play/pause is CNTL P and when I do that, I get the print window. Is there a way to alleviate this conflict? They sent me a sound file player but Windows Media keeps overriding it and there is too much dumb in me tech wise to figure out how to use the other sound file player. If anyone has any suggestions, I would appreciate it. I just get a teeny bit of this guy's work but it's a big pain in my big behind to keep grabbing the mouse and stopping/starting etc.....thanks in advance!!!
How do I clean my keyboard? [2008-09-01]
My keyboard is getting nasty down under the keys. The vacuum used to do the trick, but now some dust, crumbs, and Lord knows what else remains in the bottom of the tray. If I unscrew the screws on the bottom, will that allow me to lift the top off?
I figured I would ask, because I often do things like that only to end up with the wrong partcoming off or nothing at all happens. (I hate that.)
Any tips appreciated!
I plug my keyboard into the laptop. nm [2008-08-31]

I just got my Kinesis Freestyle... [2008-11-27]
with Vip Accessory, and I love it. I just got it a couple of weeks ago and it's taken a while to get used to it, but I would never go back to a regular keyboard. I like being able to adjust the separation between the two keyboards, and I like not being all scrunched over while typing. It's on the pricey side but I think well worth it, plus I can deduct it at tax time!
That's too many steps in a dialog box. [2008-11-22]
Word 2003 has a List Number style already formatted at the left margin that you can assign a keyboard shortcut to, then switch back to your default paragraph style after your list with Ctrl + Q.
Or you can turn on automatic numbering in the AutoCorrect/AutoFormat as You Type tab. Type your 1 and period and auto numbering starts. You'll get the auto indent, but you can hit Alt + Shift + left arrow to move the list to the left margin. You can shorten that shortcut by assigning something like Alt+L to the OutlinePromote command in the customize keyboard dialog box under all commands.
question about Word function [2008-11-21]
ok. I'm not fond of the mouse. Instead of clicking the numbering icon on the toolbar, can this be assigned a keyboard code - and how?
Which version of Word? [2008-11-21]
You can turn on auto numbering or you can assign a keyboard shortcut to a numbering style.
yes, not sure what version you are but sm [2008-11-21]
Under Tools click on customize, then click on keyboard. Then choose Format under the category window, then in the command window, find Format Bullets and Numbering. Now choose your keyboard command (like CTL X)and make sure you are not already using that for something important! Then put your new command in the press new shortcut key window, then click assign. Hope this helps!
USB hub recommendations? [2008-11-19]
Does anyone have a brand of USB hub that they can recommend.I currently have a Belkin highspeed hub with4 outlets. My hub connection keepsdropping from my mouse, keyboard, and foot pedal randomly.
Sarah, I'd strongly recommend training SM [2008-11-19]
in a medical program in a community colleage, bypassing all the MT schools, and not aiming specifically for MT training. It seems likely that many those of us doing this work in future won't be doing THIS work precisely, i.e., transcription, but rather filling whatever future medical/clerical need evolves. It also seems likely that good-paying jobs will require a higher level of knowledge in future as mechanical dexerity (i.e., keyboard speed) becomes much, much less important. For that reason, going for at least a 2-year degree with a good medical knowledge base is recommended so you do end up with a decent-paying job as change progresses.
If at that point you wanted to do at-home medical clerical and wished to start with MT, if at all possible it would be best to begin by getting a salaried position in a medical office or hospital to carry you while you developed experience. The learning curve is very long and flat, and much of the angst displayed on these forums comes from people who still aren't making a living on a production basis after months and months of investment.
BTW, I read a newspaper article this morning suggesting that the current fiscal crisis could actually precipatate an overhaul of the medical system, forced by a desperate need to save money for patient care. I'm wondering if most of these nice long verbal reports could something the bureaucrats decided could be slashed. As I mentioned before on this forum, England went to the EMR, with doctors poking at the 1, 2, and 3, and A, B, C, and D, a long time ago.

i use the kinesis [2008-11-18]
but not the freestyle type.
but love my classic/advantage (have both) types. They have a hump contour, divided keyboard. either are fully programmable, with macro capability, etc. i hear the keys but they are not what i would call clicky or noisey type. The advantage has the USB plug which i like for in and out of my laptop.
and yes, personally, i feel anyone working on a keyboard longterm should have ergo products to minimize future problems. i like the research behind the kinesis, the different key levels and locations geared towards stronger/weaker fingers. It did take a few days of re-training myself before i got up to speed again. but i am happy enough (several years now), i'll never use anything else. Kinesis is a little pricey (i did get one off ebay), but you do get what you pay for and it can be a tax deduction as well.
don't know if this is helpful, but i hope so!
I used a pillow. I placed part of it on the [2008-11-18]
the keyboard tray so I wasn't having to chase it around. You could also get something to put under your desk to put your foot pedal on. The old wooden Coke crates are great. There are adjustable keyboard trays. Part of mine broke and I'm limited in what I can do with it, but could go up and down, tilt it, go sideways. You could go to a store like Office Depot where they have various things setup and see if anything would work for you.
Typing on your lap [2008-11-18]
I just moved and my new desk setup is a built-in desk which is too high for comfort for typing on the keyboard. I can adjust my office chair up, but then it's too high to comfortably reach the pedal. I have been typing on the keyboard on my lap for two days but my shoulders are sore and so are my calves apparently from flexing when I wasn't aware of it all day.
Awhile back I read here that some MT's type on their keyboards on their laps. Please give me any feedback how it works for you and also do you know of any products out there or things around the house to support the keyboard and make it easier to balance on your legs. I kind of like typing like this other than the strain on my neck and legs from trying to keep it balanced and from sliding off.
Thanks in advance!
i've done it several ways. [2008-11-18]
the pillow doesn't work for me -- makes it too high and too hot on my legs.
my fav way now is to fold a small lap blanket in a strip across my knees and put a piece of that rubbery shelf liner under my keyboard on top of it. that puts it at the right angle and it doesn't slide.
sometimes i just get close enough to my keyboard tray to buttress the keyboard against that and it works fine too.
I also have a thin piece of wood (like weatherboard siding) that i use on my lap sometimes, but after awhile it bothers my knees.
i'll tell ya tho, i have almost no prob's with my arms if i get that board in my lap. but i still revert back to the tray because i don't like having to move stuff to get up and down...
I had an old [2008-11-18]
laptop desk, the kind that is hard on one side and the other side is kind of like a pillow (mine actually seems to have something more like straw in it, but not exactly). I used Velcro to put the keyboard on the hard side. I never could get used to using the keyboard in my lap and bought an alternative device, but out of all the ways I tried to make it work, this was the best that I came up with. I still do have the keyboard that came with my computer set up that way as a back up, just in case I have to use it. One of the problems I was having with other methods was bouncing of the keyboard, which I did not have with this setup.
Using Laptop for Work [2008-11-17]
Yes, the keypad in the laptop is not designed for typing workand it isVERY costly if need to be changed. So, you can hook up an USB keyboard and optical mouse with your laptop's USB port.
Yes, but with some reservations sm [2008-11-14]
You have to be careful of two platforms that are actually Word clients, and you can't have two versions of the same software on your computer either.
I was working on Extext and found that I could not work with MTWorld and Extext. Extext has a DocQnet file or something like that which will interfere with SOME other Word clients. Inscribe and Extext were not a problem. Currently, I am working in Extext and MedRite. I managed to injure my company computer and it is not out of the shop yet. I had to work last weekend and I mean NOW. The techies installed Extext on the same computer as my MedRite and I have had absolutely no issues...as long as I reboot between sessions of one or the other. MedRite to Extext is okay, but not Extext to MedRite, if that makes sense.
MedRite and MTWorld, no problem. MedRite and Emdat Inscribe, no problem. Extext, if that is one of your platforms, is likely to be the problem if there is one.
Now, you CAN work on 2 computers and have only one monitor, one set of speakers, one mouse and one keyboard. You get something called a KVM. DO NOT buy a Belkin unless you like to splash out $70 every 3 months. The best price I found was newegg.com and I think I paid about $19 for mine. I bought the highest rated brand on there and it is USB too.
About KVMs...you can buy them that are PS/2, but please don't. They are phasing out PS/2 ports in computers and your ability to get PS/2 peripherals will diminish. Everything is going to USBs, so get a USB. You also cannot use a PS/2 to USB adapter with a KVM, you have to have all USBs. Might be a problem for you, but you know about this going in now. I learned the hard way, so I am sharing my mistake for your benefit!
KVMs mean far less desk clutter. Mine, you hit Control twice and you switch between computers. The emulation on this one is like 3 seconds, which means I don't wait for the switcharoo for very long. I can almost pop from one to the other with no lag time.
Does anyone use a safetype keyboard? [2008-11-12]
Does anyone use a safetype keyboard or heard of reviews either good or bad? I am seriously considering buying one but I hate to spend the money if it won't help with the pain in my hands (from OA). Thanks for your help.
www.safetype.com
I use SafeType. (sm) [2008-11-12]
I use the SafeType keyboard, and I like it very much. I have thumb arthritis in both my thumbs, and I have trouble with my neck and shoulders as well.
Before I got the SafeType, I used Microsoft 4000 keyboard. I might have stayed with that keyboard had it not been for the fact that the keyboard kept breaking down, requiring replacement every 6-9 months or so, and my neck, shoulders, and upper back screamed with pain. If I couldn't find an answer to the neck and shoulder pain, I would have had to drop out of Andrews and given up on MT work.
Since I have been using the SafeType keyboard, my thumb arthritis is not an issue. The turning the the hands necessary for most other keyboards does not happen, and I notice no pain from the wrists and thumbs. Likewise, my neck and shoulder pain has gone away as well.
Will it help the OA pain in your hands? This I don't know. But what I do know is this: If the pain in your hands (or neck or shoulders)is caused by or magnified because of the pronation of the hands in the use of your current keyboard, this will not happen with the SafeType keyboard.
It completely eliminated the searing pain in my neck, shoulders and upper thoracic spine, and I do not have any stabbing thumb pains anymore either. I have been using this keyboard for just about a year now, and I am extremely happy with my purchase.
Because of the SafeType, I was able to continue with my schooling, graduate from Andrews, and now I am employed as an MT. :)
If I ever got wind that the SafeType was ever going to be discontinued, I would promptly buy 10 or more of them because their resale value would then skyrocket, probably into the quadruple digits.
Well, I'll eat my words then.... [2008-11-12]
Glad that it is a help to all who need it. Who knows, I may need it some day myself. I'm still typing on the standard keyboard. I have noticed over the many years of typing, that the height of the keyboard is very important for me. If it's the wrong height, my shoulders suffer. I guess we're all anatomically different.
I'm using a mac [2008-11-12]
lappy toppy and it's been a wonderful edition to my MT world. It seems like most companies' software doesn't like the Mac and would prefer Windows even with all the virus and unreliability problems, so my boyfriend installed a virtual PC called Parallels onto my lil puter and it works great. I use another keyboard of course, laptop keyboards are a joke and I can work on wifi or satellite/cellular modem if I need to.
It's something to look into girls !
Yes, in less than 1 year, still under warranty. [2008-11-11]
I'm not sure what it costs to buy, but I got my keyboard replaced a couple of weeks ago while it still had about 30 days left under warranty. They send the whole board and it's fairly easy to replace yourself.
My experience was that within a few months of getting my laptop some of the keys started popping off, and for awhile I was able to pop them back on (there are instructions for doing this the right way). One night about 6 keys popped off at once, and as I was attempting to snap them back on a couple of plastic pieces broke off.
I used a regular-sized keyboard for a few days after that, but I travel every week and it was just too cumbersome.
So yes, in time with MT use your keyboard is likely to wear out, but it doesn't mean you'll have to replace your whole laptop!
About laptop for MT work [2008-11-11]
I have been using laptops (first one was a notebook) for about 10 years. The one I have now is over 4 years old and doing fine. I too, use an external keyboard. I wouldn't have anything else.
About laptop for MT work..sm [2008-11-10]
i just got a very nice, widescreen laptop for work. I have medical issues and could not withstand working at my desk any longer. People are telling me that it won't last for MT work becuase the keyboard is not durable enough. Well, i still use my ergo keyboard hooked up and i only use the laptop keyboard for work when I am completing my work for about 2 to 3 hours at night. My question is, has any of you ever had a laptop keyboard go bad with MT work?
I hope not, took me years to even afford this one. :)
You're good for awhile, don't worry! [2008-11-10]
If you wear out a keyboard, then worry! Had my laptop since 9/11, can still read the keys or in a few keys almost invisible but, I know where they are! Do well! Quit being nervous, it slows you down!
