Make your expander lists portable [2008-12-01]
The esp file can be saved as mentioned. The next step is to make it work in Bayscribe. One solution is to use Instant Text and import your esp file. Once your Expander file is an Instant Text glossary, it is portable and you can use it on any MTSO transcription platform.

Chartscript help [2008-11-28]
Hoping someone could help. I am unable to copy and paste in Chartscript. I can copy and paste anywhere else, in any other program. This is a new computer I am using, new install of Chartscript. On my previous computer and Chartscript, I had the ability to copy and paste in Chartscript.
Any ideas??
Thanks much in advance!
Macro expander [2008-11-28]
Have anyof you used that new Windows Expanderex product advertised on this site? What kind of file does it use? Is it compatible with Shorthand? Sure wish they would make one available that isn't so expensive. Would like one for home use but don't want to spend over $100.
Expander Tips [2008-11-28]
Is there a website or book that lists Expander tips? I am going back to transcribing after editing the past few years and need to build up my AutoCorrect. Thanks in advance!
Three word phrases are all that I put in my expander. [2008-11-12]

A good expander pays for itself in no time at all. [2008-11-05]
Word files corrupt too easily so be sure to keep a backup for when you've lost all your shortcuts.
Also remember that you can only use autotext in Word and you're working harder not smarter. JMHO.
Yes and it is called an expander. There [2008-10-30]
are several. ShortHand (also called Speed Type), Instant Text (not sure of the correct spelling) are 2 that I can think right now. A lot of companies use ShortHand.

Best word expander? [2008-10-28]
What is the most efficient word Expander to use with Windows XP? Do any of them utilize the space bar to expand the word (I find hitting the return key takes more time)? Is Smart-Type any good ?

Chartscript.net - Need advice [2008-10-24]
Looking for opinions on Chartscript.net. Was just offered an account that uses this platform. I seem to remember using it and NOT liking it, but am not sure since I've used others since that time (and they're getting mixed up in my head). I use ShortHand word Expander and seem to remember having to turn their expander off to use mine, but then had to turn the Chartscript expander back on to pull up the template for the next report. Also, seem to remember having problems speeding up/slowing down voice, etc. Also, seem to remember having trouble with Chartscript windows and being unable to do a search and look at a patient's previous reports without toggling out of the existing report. Also, I do not believe there are time markers that you can put which can automatically take you back to a blank if you want to listen again, so you have to find the blank all over again.
Maybe I'm wrong, but I just don't recall having a good feeling about the platform and hope that others out there can set me straight. Would appreciate any feedback ASAP and I'm going to have to make a decision on whether or not to take this account in the very near future. Thanks in advance.
Chartscript.net - Still Need advice [2008-10-24]
Excuse me if I sound ignorant, but what exactly did you copy and paste? Were they big templates? If you could elaborate a bit maybe it would help me remember. I think Chartscript had a place where there were some preexisting doctor's normals, and I believe I tried saving my own large templates there (rather than putting them in Shorthand). But I think I recall that when I tried to make a change to my own template and resave it, it wouldn't work in the Chartscript normals file. The tech guy said I had some type of corrupted file, so he did something to reinstall things and then they worked.
Do you think I could just put my any larger templates I make in ShortHand to avoid this? Were you able to use an expander? How did you increase/decrease speed, etc?
I'm not sure whether I will have any other options, and may be forced to accept this account -- so I'm very nervous about it. So anything else you can tell me would be most appreciated.
Re: Chartscript.net [2008-10-24]
Thanks so much for your feedback. Not sure what I'll do yet since I don't know what my choices will be, or if this is the only account. But at least I know I wasn't imaging things and that others have experienced the same problems. I totally agree with you. It's hard to be productive when you're working on a platform that goes against productivity rather than helping it. Companies just don't seem to care about our end of things and the process we go through to create their reports. They just want to see the final version, and they want it perfect!! Good luck to you in your future endeavors.
Expander [2008-10-22]
Expanders are great and didn't know that about Instant Text being compatible.
Aside from making more money using the expander, they save your hands and your wrists from CTS or the like.
picking an expander [2008-10-20]
Hey all, anyone got any suggestions for picking a word expander? I really need a good one. I have been working without one and realize that I am severely limiting myself? Just started working on acouple ofsmall acounts this year. I am very new and don't want to spend money where I don't need to. Thanks
Thinking about finally getting an expander [2008-10-20]
The two jumping out at me are Instant Text and Smartype. Any insight would be helpful from anyone who has used either/or. I think using an Expander is the only way I am going to make enough money nowadays.

Shorthand and CS.NET (Chartscript) [2008-10-12]
I just started working for a company that uses Chartscript (web-based)and, even after upgrading to version 10 of Shorthand, it just is too unreliable to work. Are there settings I could try (as far as pause in msec etc.) I had heard that another MT at this company was able to get this to work fine with the upgraded Shorthand, but I find missed letters in sometimes relatively short expansions and my edited documents come back with words missing which I am fairly certain I did transcribe but were messed up somehow in the expansion with Shorthand. I also have problems with duplicate expansions of some letters (even with the Chartscript Expander toggled off) Is it my Internet that could be causing the problem (I have Clearwire)?
Can someone help me in converting my SH entries to the Chartscript expander? SM [2008-10-10]
Ithought SH would work with Chartscript, but the tech guy says that their Chartscript Expander and all the abbreviations reside on the hospital's server, and my abbreviations are on my own PC which is why it won't work. Can anybody help get around this somehow or convert my entries and how to load into Chartscript? The tech guy says he doesn't know anything about SH. Thank you.
Mary Morken expander system [2008-10-07]

Barbara Grow expander method [2008-10-07]
I am in search of Barbara Grow's or Mary Morken's word Expander method and dictionaries. I googled these and am not finding any place that has them free or for sale. Do any of you know where to find them?
Chartscript.net and Docuscribe [2008-10-07]
Hello -- does anyone know if I would be able to use both ChartScript.net and Docuscribe programs on the same computer without any problems? I know that both are web-based and am concerned about Active X controls being a conflict between the two platforms. Thanks for any help on this!
Losing expander by switching companies [2008-10-03]
If I decided to switch companies but am using an Expander program that is the company's software, I would haveto start from square one with new company.(There is noway around that, correct?)
Not planning on leaving now but was just thinking that ifthat should become a consideration, my line count woulddrop big time until I could build all thoseexpansions again. Has anyone ever gone through that? Do you remember how long it took to get back up to speed?
I need some advice on starting my own small side business. sm [2008-12-02]
First of all, I have worked for several nationals in the past few years, and equipment has always been provided. I currently have a f/t position with a national that I use my own personal computer for, they just put their software on it. I had what I needed already, as far as foot pedal, Expander program, etc.
I have just been sort of rolling ideas around in my head about possibly starting up something small perhaps on a p.r.n. basis just to bring in a little extra income. As I am still just mulling this around in my mind, my questions are: How do I go about getting started? Do I try to purchase equipment first, or start out using tapes? I am worried about spending the money and not having any takers, so I am thinking, I should send out some sort of letters first; but, without having the equipment already, how do I tell them I plan on doing their transcription. Maybe mention tapes first, and tell them I have plans to go digital after I get up and running? These are all just things I wonder about. If anyone has any ideas, please feel free to email me with any advice.
I have been an MT for 16+ years, but as I said, I have always had all of the stuff provided for me and just don't know how to start.
Thanks in Advance!
Which is better? [2008-12-02]
I currently use ShortHand and will be moving to a company that uses Instant Text with Medrite. Was told that my Shorthand could be converted somehow to use within Instant Text or I could use the Medrite expander. I really just want to use Shorthand, but if I cannot, does anyone know which way would be better -- to put my Shorthand expansions into the Instant Text or the Medrite system? When they do this, will my Shorthand basically work the same? Any info greatly appreciated.

Feel your pain [2008-11-26]
You need to stay calm and focused and hopefully you have a macro Expander which can help alot.
Obviously experience is not what you are lacking. You need to find balance in your life with good diet, exercise, proper rest and perhaps take some herbal supplements also.
If you are making grammatical errors that can be easily corrected. Don't feel bad about making less money as you are not alone. I am sure most of us are in that situation. No one is having an easy time these days.
I would say stick with MT it. You know it, you've done it for years and now you need to take it up a notch and hone your skills a little better.
You really have an edge over a lot of new MTs with no experience.
The old standard used to be three times the sm [2008-11-21]
length of the dictation is the typing time so 30 minutes would be 90 minutes. I'm not sure with Expander programs on one end and then horrible ESL and sometimes horrible audio - what the standard is now - I definitely struggle with it though :)
I have 13 years' worth here and sm [2008-11-15]
I will say that mastery of this craft does bring a certain pleasure in the job. For me, challenges are few and far between when it comes to terminology, my favorite part of this job. My challenge at the moment is a difficult ESL who is a cardiothoracic surgeon. The other cardio queens will not touch him, so he is all mine. Lovely.
When it comes to OP notes, which is something I did everyday until recently (was made a cardio queen) I did love it. I felt competent, capable and I loved how I had my Expander so well tuned. Yes, I enjoyed it a great deal. Right now, not so much.
You have to know, even when you get to where you are more comfortable and have that certain level of mastery you will still have days when this is just a job and not a very pleasant one. It is the nature of being human, I think.
How much do you.... [2008-11-13]

Thanks for the info.

JMO, but.... [2008-11-12]
With the way the economy is, and many transcriptionists looking for work, I'd forget the raise idea for a bit. I've been doing this for 8 years with no raises. It just does not happen when you're an IC that often. I do give myself raises, in that I work hard to improve my speed, I use my Expander to the fullest, and I add more work. The more efficiently you do what you do, the more earning potential you have. Best of luck with the raise thing. I do hope they accept the request and keep you, though it can backfire.
Anyone have this trouble? [2008-11-12]
I use lots of Expanders and create more all the time. It's great when I do the same account or two regularly, but during spells of getting more accounts (when my main ones are low) I find I waste time fumbling to see if I have an Expander for things.
I have had to deviate from a normal expansion pattern (in a variety of ways), and as long as I am typing the same several dictators, I get used to the way they speak and my expansions and all the deviations just come automatically. However, when I get tons of other docs saying things in so many different ways, the deviations don't come to me and I fumble. I think I could go faster with more straight type.
I know people say to have expansions for everything, but do any of you have a good way to determine when it's better to just type it out? - I don't think anyone could use 100% expansion (or even 90%), but does anyone have any advice or general thougths on this?
Thanks so much!
You said it! [2008-11-09]
I'm one of those high earners, and I'd say a big portion ofit is luck - the right account/options ofOTsometimes makes all the difference in the world.
But a big portion of it is noticing the patterns. Does Dr. A use the same phrase repeatedly? Put it in your expander. Does work dry up on the last day of your week? Work a little extra the other days, so you'll have a cushion. Can you change your shift to when there's more work, easier docs, etc.?
Another big portion of it is attitude. Going to work gung-ho, determined to beat them at their game today and come out the winner.
It has been a long odyssey [2008-11-09]
One of the things I thought might be a good alternative to mousing was the HP Touchsmart computer, which did not work out as well as I had hoped, but now I'm stuck with it. It is a really cool machine, but I do not use the touch screen much at all. I use a rolling laptop desk that I purchased from Wal-Mart (I think it was $69, ordered on-line and picked up at the store). The Touchsmart is a computer/monitor in one and it's pretty heavy, but the laptop desk does hold the weight (barely). I do have to be very careful rolling it to and fro, but if you've got a flatscreen monitor I'm sure it would do fine (although you would probably have to be just as careful due to it being so lightweight).
Funny how some folks are about helping others out. A lady I have done some work for was like that and I just never understood why (mostly not sharing templates that she already had made up for the doctors I was working on for her), especially considering how willing and happy I was to share much information with her (like she was not even familiar with using AutoCorrect for expansions, forget about Expander programs).
What comes around goes around, I suppose. Please forgive my rant!
Word Expanders [2008-11-08]
I am looking for a word Expander to purchase and I was wondering if any of you have Instant Text Pro and how exactly does it work. Are there entries already in there? Also, what is the difference between Instant Text Pro and Shorthand. Thanks so much. Do you think Instant Text Pro is worth the money?
Carla
I will make just over $40K this year sm [2008-11-07]
Actual, I am typing, hands on the keyboard time is about 8 to 9 hours a day. I work as an employee at 8.5 cpl and as an IC for 10 cpl and I do some QA for $16 an hour. The QA is a courtesy to my IC company and really cuts into my typing time there where I can do $30 an hour or better. QA is only about 5 hours a week, except when I am training an MT, and I am training 2 right now. It was 8 hours so far this week.
You ask about normals and expanders. I use an Expander with a lot of shortcuts, as in many thousands. Normals, I have some. The system at my employee job has some in it, I have made a few (less than 50). The IC job I have made a few too (less than 25). Most of my normals are shells of headers and the few things they always say. All I do it is acute care, primarily OP notes and yes, I don't have that many normals. When your pool has about 2000 doctors in it, normals are a challenge to find and make.
I have oh, reasonable work habits. I take frequent short breaks because I have to. I do work a split shift, which really helps me make it through the day, and the IC is catch as catch can, and about 6000 lines every 2 weeks. I usually spend about 2 or 3 partial hours a day typing at top speed, like an athlete. The rest of the time I do the best I can. I have stellar days and days when I feel I like I need to eat every hour! And I do it too.
Yup, I do the laundry and the dishes while I am working. I always have the TV or a DVD in, but music on Saturday mornings.
I posted that higher earners at my company SM [2008-11-07]
are bringing home that kind of money. The key word, though, is earners. Not job. Pay is on a production basis, and those high wages are a result of base pay + incentive bonus pay x 40 hours a week of actual keyboarding, 50 weeks a year (or close to). If they work less quick or less long, the money drops.
So, do I feel sort of jealous because working 35 hours a week doesn't earn that much? No.
I am envious of those with a natural talent for fast keyboarding, though. I'm so bad that in the past I would never have imagined myself doing work based on typing; that would have been a really dumb move. :) I have to work hard to keep my production up and have invested long hours developing my Expander skills to try to compete, but any of them who also work smart still outproduce, and outearn, me easily.
Any new text expanders out there? [2008-11-05]
I like Instant Text and the fact that it compiles multiple reports for you and creates shortcuts for you and almost any method works with it, ABCZ, AAA, ABAB, or just wildcard it. IT also gives you many suggestions at the bottom of the screen in the advisories. I also like the smartline under the cursor in Smartype, but there is no wildcarding in ST. I also like the feature in some of the autocompletion software that learns as we type and remembers words and phrases that are typed often. When will we get a text Expander program that gives us all of these in one program? We deserve it and it has to be around $50.
fast fox [2008-11-05]
Fast Fox by NCH, the Expander by the people that gave you Express Scribe. It has been good for me, it is easy and CHEAP. Go to NCH.com to download a free trial.
No I don't work for NCH but I tried it because I always like express scribe.
Expanderic Doesn't Have [2008-11-05]
Ok I downloaded it and there is no suggestion box. Deleting it. Thanks but I am looking for an Expander with a suggestion box by my cursor other than Shorthand, Speedtype, or Smartype. If anyone knows of any please let me know. Thanks again
I'm a little surprised by the answers so far, SM [2008-11-05]
and the question. I use the top numbers row as a fourth row of standard keys, every single one of them precious to me as a source of abbreviations (there are 12 of them up there!). I'd never give up my numbers row.
And I'd never ever use the keypad way over there in the boonies in its place, although I've wished my Expander would recognize its keys so I could use them for special seldom-used functions.
Susan, although I do have abbreviations for numbers using letters, none are good enough that I'd recommend them over just plain learning to type that top row as well as you do the three below it. My 8 is as easy a key tap as the letters for q8 to expand to q.8h., 18gg for 18-gauge, 98f for 98 degrees Fahrenheit, and so on. Best wishes.
Instant Text [2008-11-04]
eScription has the ability to convert several different abbreviation Expander programs and I think Instant Text is one of them. Check with eScription support and they can tell you how to run the converter program.
Can I transfer instant text word list to autocorrect?? [2008-11-02]
Hi all. Well I have a ton of entries stored in my Instant Text program. The problem is, that now that I am using Editscript version 8 instead of version 6, whenever I use my instant text program, it freezes up on me.. So I am just wondering, is there any way that I can transfer over my IT word lists over to autocorrect in microsoft word?? I think this is the only text Expander I can use with editscript 8. I really appreciate any help with this!!
$100 in a 7hr dy w/ VR @3cpl? [2008-10-29]
Well, I have decided that I am such a slow typer that even an Expander can't help me. So.....I am considering going to VR at 3cpl. Is it possible to make at least $100 in a 7 hr day with VR? Its either this or Wal-mart Thanks
Best word expander? [2008-10-28]
What is the most efficient word Expander to use with Windows XP? Do any of them utilize the space bar to expand the word (I find hitting the return key takes more time)? Is Smart-Type any good ?
Shorthand allows you to choose which key SM [2008-10-28]
you want to expand with and to set a lot of other preferences too (I use the space bar). Probably the other top-line ones do too.
As for best? People tend to fall in love with whichever they have and will be happy to tout it. I like Shorthand's simplicity of use, with many sophisticated features available in the background for those who want them. InstantText is another very good one with apparently all the bells and whistles the market has to offer these days. Its users swear by it. Do note that the Windows ShortHand Word Expander, Expanderic, is a new program and is not Shorthand.
