Does Editscript V8 now with USB foot pedal? [2008-11-28]
I ended up getting a laptop for my version 8 upgrade since I use another program for another account and can't do both on my desktop. My 9-pin worked fine with a USB adapter on my desktop and the old version ES, but now won't work with V8 and the laptop. It is set correctly and can fast forward and rewind and stop dictation when I tap the center but won't play when I press the center key. I am stuck having to use Alt A to play audio and tap the pedal to pause, which has slowed me down considerably. I've tried to change the brand of the adapter to one of them suggested and it does the same thing as the one I was using. I wonder if it would be worth while to just get a new Infinity USB pedal. I notice when setting the port on Editscript options that it now has a USB option. Has anybody used this type of foot pedal with the V8 successfully? I'm getting very frustrated with this upgrade, especially with the expense at Christmas time and the hours waisted trying to get it to work, that I don't get paid for.
True that works should insist on fair SM [2008-11-25]
compensation. However, strikes only work when the strikers CANNOT BE REPLACED. That's definitely not us, not now. To put it mildly! With our entire healthcare industry in economic crisis, it would be only too likely to push the industry to get rid of our jobs altogether. Many are arguing right now for shifting the money spent on verbal reports to other areas of patient care.
Just BTW, our work would be eliminated practically overnight if the federal government were to refuse to pay Medicare compensation dollars for it. Something that could be done.
Besides, let's face it, many people are still making a decent income because they've upgraded their skills to keep up with technologic change. Should hospitals be paying some people to spend at least half again as long to type reports as others can do them because they don't want to, or can't, add to their skills? Is that really a sensible allocation of our healthcare dollars?
I don't use Editscript myself...sm [2008-11-21]
I can totally see where you wouldn't be able to afford to upgrade though. I have Windows XP but I need to upgrade to a newer Word. I am using 2002 Word. I am starting to have issues with Spantel using this version. I can do the work but I am having little issues. I can't afford to buy an upgrade though. I don't know, maybe I can get a used copy of Microsoft Office. It doesn't have to be 07 just a newer version than I have. I will have to check on it. You are not alone in not being able to afford upgrades though.
Any EditScript Users cannot afford [2008-11-20]
To upgrade. Just received notification that all must upgrade to Windows XP and Word 2003 or 2007. Anyone finding this difficult at this time of the year with no work? At the moment, I am blaming Bill Gates. Anyone want to vent?

Editscript V8 [2008-11-12]
With the account that I work on, they did something to the program to make it so that we could not copy and paste within a document. Maybe this happened to your account. The only copy and pasting that can be done, I have found,is after the job has been uploaded. Then, I cansearch by dictation ID in the database. Once in view function, I am able to copy and paste using the same Ctrl functions as in Word.
I did this for a while myself and it actually works... [2008-11-05]
If you want a way to set up your computer if you actually do sit up at all, invest in an Airdesk. I love mine.

Some companies offer an extra monetary amount for XX number of lines transcribed over your average, or for lines transcribed by working above your required schedule. All companies are different.

editscript/infinity footpedal [2008-10-17]
Has anyone been successful in using the Infinity USB footpedal with editscript? If so, could you outline the steps to do it?
Thanks a ton!
Editscript and footpedal [2008-10-17]
The company you work with should give you the instructions.
I only know that Editscript works together with the Escription software that you can download free from the internet.
I assume you have the 9-pin serial (Com) port footpedal.
You have also to set the right port on your computer:
Click on Control panel/footswitch/serial port/Com1 or Com2.

editscript [2008-10-02]
Editscript is I guess you would call it like a platform. Voice recognition editing is when the report comes up and you go through and listen to the doctor to catch any mistakes that are in there.

All at the same time.

Instant Text & Editscript-alt+. [2008-10-01]
This is for anyone who has worked in editscript with Instant Text. When you press the alt+. combo the IT box pops up, but you really want a period inserted into the report with next character capitalized right. Well how do you make it happen that way? I have searched everywhere and cannot find the answer anywhere. Any help would be great.
Thanks
Can someone explain how bitwise pay works? [2008-09-22]
I'm interviewing for a company that uses WordPerfect in their transcribing and they said that they pay bitwise, not cpl.
Can someone please explain what that means! I have looked through WP to find this, but can't seem to figure it out.
Thanks!
I have a paperless solution that works very well for me. [2008-09-19]
I have an Excel workbook file (any spreadsheet program will do) on which I have a separate worksheet for each client. I use the first column for topics and the second column to put the latest instructions on that topic. I don't try to keep history here, just the most current direction. I have this file on a laptop that I keep next to my work computer for easy viewing, but you could put it on the same computer if you don't have a second one. Good luck.
EditScript does not always hold corrections [2008-09-18]
I've been there and had this happen. I wound up getting a new computer with more memory (though I had a good bit already). It seems EditScript is a large program and takes other programs working also to support it. It was frustrating to take all the time to edit reports and upload them, only to get nasty feedback in return that I should have made the corrections I made. A new computer with lots of memory solved that problem for me.
Editscript problems [2008-09-17]
I have not had any work from the client since July but I bumped into someone who works in one of the departments at the facility and they sort of complained to me about the quality of the reports lately. I told them I hadn't done the work but they continued to rant about the poor quality. I told them it was now Editscript. So it looks like Escription/Editscript is lacking something. They said words left out and misspelled words were a big problem. Now you can say it is up to the Editor to fix it but if they don't hear it, it can't be fixed. Also I'm wondering if the corrections are holding after the report is closed out. Anyway they are not happy, just FYI.
I think you should have charged them [2008-12-03]
the first time. Tell them if you have to spend time to listen, then that's at a rate of $20.00 an hour in addition to the transcribed lines minus the reports they think are already transcribed. This way, you are paid to listen.
How much more of this are you going to take Lisa? My dear, you are letting them walk on you.
Are you being paid for the meeting in the morning?
I can thank C-Bay for losing my job, too.
Look, you are going to need to draft a contract to bring along in the morning. Otherwise, you will be working for free, and this practice will drive you insane.
You need to figure out what works best for you and set the ground rules. You simply explain to the office manager that this is how you will be doing the work and what you will charge, etc.
At some point, you will have to hold this office accountable for the work they give you and stop working for free.
If you are picking up flash drives, then they should not expect you to report back on patients, etc., which is time consuming unless they would agree to a flat hourly rate for listening and sorting out dictations and then a lower line rate.
I know, I have a big mouth, but please, don't let them take advantage of you. As I said in your last posting, they will continue to abuse you if you allow it.
There are plenty of companies online hiring right now. www.mtjobs.com - have you checked there?
You know the [2008-12-03]
old saying, give 'em an inch and they'll take a mile . . . you have given them their inch already. I don't believe they would be able to find someone else to do that for them at no charge, do you? I'm sure she is being paid for the time that she works, be it by the hour or salary.
I know how it feels to want to keep an account of your own, especially under the circumstances you mentioned in your last post, but I do not think you should continue to help out for free. It's not fair, and more than that it is abuse. I would probably try to find a nice way of letting her know that you do want the account, but cannot afford the time to help out for free. Maybe say something like, when you determine which ones you need to have transcribed, give me a call and I can pick up the drive and list of those done right away.
There's nothing wrong with keeping a list of transcribed patients to let them know which ones you transcribed, IMHO, but if there are some that they do not want you to transcribe then they need to let you know which ones they are. I have a sneaking suspicion that with the last ones she gave you, she knew some had been done and did not have time to figure that out beforehand, and did not even mention that to you until afterwards. They really should've had the last girl keeping a list of what she had transcribed, and then they would not be in this predicament.
I would just try to be as pleasant and professional in my responses to her, but do not let her have you sorting out her mess at no charge.
yup get them [2008-12-03]
What I use is the generic 1% fungal cream from anywhere, drug store, grocery store, Wal-Mart. Make sure it's 1% because the higher percentages burn and this one does not. All you do is bathe, make sure you are dry, and put on liberally. Works like a charm!
IC and taxes/PTO time [2008-12-02]
Hi all.
I have been doing this and wanted some feedback from other ICs on how they handle the same.
I currently have 10% of my check put into an account for all taxes and 5% for PTO time, which should equal about 13 days a year, maybe more depending on how much I work. My husband gets floating days off (works at a casino) and gets 5 weeks (imagine that!) and I think I would like to work up to that per year. Currently at the 5%, I am at about 3 weeks, so not too far off. I am just not sure I want to have 9% taken out for vacation time. That seems like so much hehe Maybe I could increase by 2% each year and by 2010 be up to the 9% or 5 weeks off a year.
I do pool work, so taking time off with notice is not a problem. What I have done in the past is if I dont have enough PTO time saved, I work on Saturdays leading up to time off and after vacation to make up for lost days.
I so much want this to be more like a normal job I am working 8 hours and setting the $$ aside, so I think it will come together, but the PTO still throws me off!
My question is really how do the rest of you set aside for taxes and paid time off? By percent or dollar amount?
Another thing to consider [2008-12-01]
According to the EditScript V8 foot pedal configuration, we CAN now use the USB foot pedals. However, I haven't tried it.
There also might be a program on your laptop that is somehow interfering with the audio on EditScript V8. Were you able at any time to play audio with EditScript V8 on your laptop with the foot pedal?
For instance, when I downloaded the toolbar from eBay, I suddenly was not able to get my footpedal to work, though it was working great before this. I was able to play audio with the ALT keys, but just couldn't get used to it. My foot pedal, btw, is just a standard 9-pin.
In my case, I knew that the footpedal and audio worked just fine the day before. So, in order to get the foot pedal to play audio again on EditScript V8, I had to do a system restore, restoring my system back 2 days, to when I didn't have that ebay toolbar on my laptop. I don't know if system restore would help you if you don't know if/what other programs might be interfering, but there might be some other program that is interfering;for instance,Yahoo or Google toolbar.

You do as you like, but I can tell you [2008-12-01]
that disorganization does not always come from the old MT that you've replaced. You can type for free all you want. That's your business. If this person wasn't smart enough to know that there were dictations already transcribed and just handed it over to you on a holiday weekend to sort out the mess, and now doesn't want to pay, that's a bad first impression of the person handling the work that is supposed to have a handle on things. I guess she should have checked, but then again maybe she was in a rush to get to her holiday and not worry about it.
I'm sure they'll pass the word all around that Lisa works for free; try her out! What would it cost for them in all honesty to just pay you for the trouble since it was their mistake and not yours? Honestly? But, hey, if you like working for free, that's your business.
Good luck with that account!
Why not ask the office how the old MT handled this situation? See what answer they give ya?
You are all assuming the old MT was the bad one, when in fact it is probably the office; I think it's horrible to have this girl type on a holiday weekend and then come back with well we don't want to pay you know. Horrible!
No, I'm not a doormat. It is actually MTs that type for free that give us all a bad name! Gee, I wish I could afford to type for free, but I can't, so I won't.
Do you think a patient goes into thisphysician's office and says I've heard this all before from another doctor, so I'm not going to pay you? Doubt it!
I think you should read the post again.. [2008-12-01]
And now doesn't want to pay.
OP never stated that they didn't want to pay. You really jump to conclusions. She has not worked with this physician before. It most likelywas a simple mistake. Why jump straight tothe idea that they are expecting her to work for free or will burn her? Do you really believe that this office will now go around and tell everyone that Lisa works for free? Do you really believe that? There is a difference between working for free and giving someone the benefit of the doubt when most likely they made an honest mistake. And, no, it has nothing to do with being a doormat. Here is that definition: One that submits without protest to abuse or indignities. Every person who has responded to her posthas, at a minimum, suggested that she make itvery clear that she will not accept this scenario again -- that would be protest. I'm sorry that you have been burned before, but that's a big stretch at this point in this particular situation.
They don't issue checks. [2008-11-28]
They just said that they do not issue checks. They said that other MTs are paid with the prepaid visa cards and everything works out for them ok. I asked for names of these MTs but they did not give them to me. That is why I asked on here if anyone knew anything about these cards. I don't trust giving out my bank account numbers for direct deposit or I would do that.
I notice when setting the port on Editscript options that it now has a USB option. Has anybody used this type of foot pedal with the V8 successfully? I'm getting very frustrated with this upgrade, especially with the expense at Christmas time and the hours waisted trying to get it to work, that I don't get paid for.
Benefits [2008-11-26]
Just found out benefit premiums are going up over $100 more a month. I am hardly getting by as is, let alone when benefits go up. I have to carry the insurance for my entire family (husband is self employed). If someone works for a company that offers good coverage (deductible $1000 or less and copays $30 or less) and cheap premiums (i.e. less than $500/mo for family coverage), could you please let me know. I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

come to the end and sign off. Unless I'm feeling fuzzy or the report's a toughie, then I relisten as long as it takes until I have as good a report as I can make of it. People who type and then reread, much less relisten, must be incredibly fast typists to be able to make a decent living. But whatever works.

was hoping for a one-cue pop-in - but this works just great!
I don't post here super often but I could use some thoughts (m) [2008-11-21]
and support. Don't flame me for sounding weak or needy. I had a client call me out of the blue today (actually his secretary called me) and told me that I was no longer transcribing his letters. But were clear I'd still be transcribing for his partner. I asked why, she said she didn't know what his gripe was but that he made her be the bad guy. It feels personal to me, not because he did it on a personal level, but I guess it hurts like a personal attack because my work is very serious to me and I'd hate to think that he thought I wasn't do my job well enough. I know I was. I often felt undermined or a little accused by the staff at times. I was supposed to pick up x number of times per week and about a month ago they called and said now, how often ARE you picking up? which sounded like they were not believing I was coming when I should. I pick up after hours, have my own key. Other times I'll get lists of reports they need. Some I've given them weeks or months earlier. Some I don't have at all, BUT not because I lost them, because they weren't dictated. I keep a physical list of all reports on each tape I do and if it's not on the tape, it's not on the list. I mentioned this to the sec. once before in my defense when she's said he dictated such and such when he actually only thought he did or accidentally taped over it something, kwim? Things are so tight for us right now as they are for so many of us. I guess I just need to vent and ask if this has happened to others? Where you felt undermined and let go unfairly? Or if you've just had doctors come and go every so often for really no good reason? I feel bad. These doctors' wives are my friends (were before I worked for him) and I think that makes it feel more personal. I've been very good about and tried really hard not to mention personal in the office or the office when I see them socially so the two are separate. I just feel like he was unhappy with me and I often wondered if he was just by the questions the girl asked me and made me feel like she thought I wasn't doing my job right. But I really thought if HE had a problem, HE would talk to me so I was okay. Guess not, huh? Thanks if you even read this far. If you have a prayer or two to spare for me that it all works out, that I find work fast to replace this income and that my family doesn't feel any effects from it. Also that the relationship and my feelings are healed, that I can overcome it. I'd just appreciated any shared experiences. Thanks. (P.S. Not in the best frame of mind right now, so I apologize for any typos or errors. This is my disclaimer that I'm not going to proofread this, lol).
2.0 [2008-11-20]
I have a 2.0 and I believe that is the highest available. Atleast it is the highest that I have seen at stores. I'm not an online shopper.
I purchased a new one that has an AC adapter to increase performance to the hub so I will see how that works. There really are not many options available.

paid by the minute now. we have gone back and forth, but one platform does not count lines and when on it we are paid by the minute. Sometimes it works out if you get a long in minutes dictation, but the dictator does a lot of breathing and hemming and hawing. You get paid for those minutes too.
Paid by the minute? [2008-11-19]
Does anybody know how getting paid per dictated minute works? Thanks!
Ooma [2008-11-18]
Just stumbled across this new VOIP that sounds too good to be true. Normally I'd say Then it must be, but judging from the number of 5-star reviews on multiple websites, I'm seriously thinking of trying this out. Anyone here tried it? Apparently you buy the hardware like a mini-router that just routes a single IP address.
Anyway, it looks like it would pay for itself in 4 months, & after that phone service would be totally free. Anyone here tried it? I might just jump in but keep my land line for awhile in case it doesn't pan out.
sm... [2008-11-18]
I did not say they had to provide work when I or anyone else wants it. I said they cannot dictate hours or shifts. if they ad says certain hours or shifts, that is not an IC. They cannot dictate the hours a person works and still call that an IC position. That is the law.
Typing on your lap [2008-11-18]
I just moved and my new desk setup is a built-in desk which is too high for comfort for typing on the keyboard. I can adjust my office chair up, but then it's too high to comfortably reach the pedal. I have been typing on the keyboard on my lap for two days but my shoulders are sore and so are my calves apparently from flexing when I wasn't aware of it all day.
Awhile back I read here that some MT's type on their keyboards on their laps. Please give me any feedback how it works for you and also do you know of any products out there or things around the house to support the keyboard and make it easier to balance on your legs. I kind of like typing like this other than the strain on my neck and legs from trying to keep it balanced and from sliding off.
Thanks in advance!
i've done it several ways. [2008-11-18]
the pillow doesn't work for me -- makes it too high and too hot on my legs.
my fav way now is to fold a small lap blanket in a strip across my knees and put a piece of that rubbery shelf liner under my keyboard on top of it. that puts it at the right angle and it doesn't slide.
sometimes i just get close enough to my keyboard tray to buttress the keyboard against that and it works fine too.
I also have a thin piece of wood (like weatherboard siding) that i use on my lap sometimes, but after awhile it bothers my knees.
i'll tell ya tho, i have almost no prob's with my arms if i get that board in my lap. but i still revert back to the tray because i don't like having to move stuff to get up and down...
From your post sm [2008-11-17]
I sorta do both. I mean, I am up for about 5-10 minutes of every hour because I can't sit too long at a time. I have to get 1100 lines during my 8-hour shift, never a problem to get 1300 in that time, even with all my breaks, which are many.
If you are new to having a pool, there is a certain learning curve. You have to be able to hear lots of different voices and not get rattled, and moreover not slow down excessively. It comes with time, but it is frustrating at first. You set a pace that works for you. I work a split shift because I have to see the end of my shift and 8 hours too long to see to the end. My first is 3.5 hours. I usually do about 600 in that time and come back in the afternoon for another4.5 and do 700 in that time span. I am fresher in the morning and I type faster, but I am I stiff and get up more. I have better concentration and fewer breaks in the afternoon, but I am slower with typing. You will have something similar no matter how you do it, even in an straight 8-hour shift. You have to know yourself and work with that, whatever it is.
You can set goals for lines against the number of hours, ending with the minimum at the end of your shift. Hourly goals will make you feel defeated if you have a difficult ESL or a particularly tiring report where you had to look everything up. Set it for 2 or 3 or even 4. Don't beat yourself up if you can't do it right off the bat. Adjust your goals a bit and build on them. My company wants 1100 a day, but my goal is consistently do 1300 and I am working on that. You can do that too as time runs on.
Best of luck.
You know, I read your post... [2008-11-17]
I am also an IC that works from a pool. I have two accounts on my own. Part of being an IC is the flexibility.
I would say dig in early in the a.m. if that's when you are most productive. If the kids have a question, then lend an ear but if it is a matter of you having to leave your workstation for whatever reason, then either tell them to find an alternative this minute or you'll be able to take them at such and such a time.
Here's what happens when you go from what you are currently doing to trying to work a schedule, you can't stay focused. You are so used to the interruptions that once it's quiet, it's hard to stay focused.
I am feeling ya' and a lot of people will post here that you should only be working and not doing other things, but other things are part of life and what makes working at home work. A little play on words there, but I think you get the idea.
I get hugs from my 8 year old and questions from my 14 year old and quite frankly sometimes I don't know if the 14 year old is inside or out, but he's so used to me being here, that I know he's fine and making the right decisions.
It's FREE too--check it out and let us know how it works!! [2008-11-17]

try herbs for sleeping [2008-11-16]
I don't work 3rd shift but do have insomnia. I've found that herbs work nearly as well as prescribed meds for sleeping, and I don't wake up feeling groggy. Valerian is good, as is skullcap, but it seems that combinations work best. There's one called Sleep Like a Baby from a mail order company, HCBL, that works really well.
