I use noise-reduction phones that I originally bought from Sharper Image for about $50. They are identical to the Kensingtons sold on Amazon.com for $30 now. These phones have active electronics that cancels background noise. Pilots use them to reduce engine noise. What they do is to create a zone that is difficult to describe, but basically the voice you want to hear is brought in very close and most of the background noise fades away. You can still hear the phone ring, etc., but the TV in the next room is reduced to little or nothing. You have to experience it. The bottom line is that as a supervisor I have to edit a lot of couldn't hear it jobs. Well, I can hear what people using the garbage phones cannot. Part of the noise reduction is accomplished by the plush earphones, which go over your ears rather than in them, like a pilot's headphone. A few caveats: 1. This is a very light headphone, but it is a bit heavier than the plastic phones that most MT companies distribute. 2. It is the over-the-head style, not under-the-chin. If your main concern is mussing your hair, it's probably not for you. 3. Most desktop transcribe stations are mono output, and the sound is split to both ears inside the stock mono headphone you're probably using. Stereo headphones look for two inputs at the jack, and don't split the sound themselves. Thus, for this and any other stereo headphone you will need a cheap mono-to-stereo adapter you can buy from Radio Shack in order to hear sound in both ears. It's about $3. It splits the mono at one end into left-right outputs at the other end. You plug it into your desktop unit jack, and plug the headset into it. Good luck!

Can anyone recommend a good sound quality pair of headphones? I do NOT like the Transcriptionist style (the ones that look like a stethoscope). Earbuds do not work either. Something around a standard-looking stereo headphone set? I think as I get older, my hearing is getting worse, because I usually can do good with a decent pair at Wal-Mart but lately the sound just isn't as good as it used to be. Any suggestions are very greatly appreciated and/or advice on any add-ons that I can use. Thanks!

Would anyone happen to know if there is a gadget of some sort that you can plug into 2 sources so you can use the same set of headphones? Here's my scenario. Both my tape transcribing machine and my computer speakers use the same headset. At times when my national runs out of work for a bit, I switch to my dictaphone and work on a tape. I have to unplug the headphones from one and plug them in to the other back and forth and back and forth. Yes I know I can use 2 head sets and pull one out of my ears and pop the other headset in, but I'm being really lazy here and I thought it would be neat if you could just switch feet on the 2 separate foot pedals somehow without having to unplug either from machines or ears. Am I LAZY or what! Thanks!

This is a great deal (and I'm not just sayin' that!!) These cost upwards of $350 new, not including the optional items. Excellent working condition with optional handset microphone and cradle for dictation, and Infinity-style 3-function foot pedal (also bought optional, didn't like the Dictaphone pedal) plus an adapter I bought for it to use any standard-jack headphones with it instead of only Dictaphone headsets. This is a REALLY nice transcriber (check out link below for detailed specs/info), great sound and functionality. I loved it, but alas, I don't use microcassettes anymore and just don't need it. My loss can be your gain. I don't have the headset anymore but I can throw in some brand new stereo earbuds if needed, which is what I used. This unit can also be connected to a phone line for dictation somehow, though I never tried it and have no idea how it works. It's in original box and instruction manual is included.
