Stedman's equipment - I do mostly Ops. I also [2008-10-06]
use the abbreviations book a lot.
www.drugs.com or www.rxlist.com for drug references. I have Dorland's but in 22 years I think I've only used it twice.
reference books [2008-10-06]
Is there one reference book you use more than others. What's your favorite way to search for a word?
Reference books [2008-10-06]
Definitely Dorland's Medical Dictionary. It is much more comprehensive than any of the others. When I was first transcribing (1969!)I learned a great deal of medicine from just reading the whole entry. After that, I would say the PDR. I always tell my students to ask their doctors for any reference books they are replacing. Saves a lot of money. Also, don't buy anything until you have a job. Employer may supply you and, if not, you will be able to deduct their cost from taxes if you are employed.

Stedman's word books are probably the [2008-09-10]
best ones out there. You can find them on the classified board here, half.com, Amazon.com or at Stedman's website - don't know URL but Google Stedman's Word Books.

buying books [2008-09-05]
I have gotten quite a few Stedman's off of www.half.com (part of eBay, if you're not familiar with it). I've gotten some really good deals, including one still in the shrink wrap. They havesome of the really old versions, too, so you have to watch that.

I have the full Stedman's line, but use those 3 books every day; the others are used only on occasion.

red one is, but I use my Stedman's equipment book a bunch, though still have to use on-line sources too as there is always new equipment coming out and the book was probably written a year before it comes out.
Reference books [2008-07-11]
Will be getting back into MT'ing in the near future, and was wondering what everyone would recommend as the three essential reference books to start with (was thinking possibly Stedman's abbreviations, red Dorland's and possibly one other). Hope to utilize online ref's a lot but know there's no substitute for books. Thanks, P
Stedman's Medical Terms & Phrases [2008-07-06]
This book is such a great resource. It very much like the very pricey Medical Phrase Index by PMIC, but it's catered specifically for MT's as opposed to coders. It's completely cross referenced, the print is a very nice size. and it's thumb indexed alphabetically. The newest version retails for around $66, but I found mine on Amazon.com from one of the sellers and got it brand new for $8 shipped! There are a several more sellers who have it for the price as well and I would recommend this book to all MTs (new or seasoned). It would especially be very helpful to new MTs and/or students. Just a note, but I've recently updated most of my Stedman's books and have gotten incredible deals from Amazon sellers on these. Even on the CD electronic book versions. Whene ver I find a great deal, I just have to pass it on!
I don't believe Andrews lists ALL the books on their website ... [2008-06-14]
that they provide for their course, just a few. You could contact the head of each school they will actually talk to you and answer your questions. From everything I have read over the last few years, both schools are wonderful.
Stedman's Medical Terms and Phrases [2008-06-10]
Just wanted to thank you for posting about this book. I ordered mine after seeing your post and just received it today. It does look like it will be quite helpful....and I love the size of the print...not so small that I need a magnifying glass!Of course, the cost is unreal. Thanks again for sharing.
Stedman's medical terms and phrases [2008-06-02]
Just to let everyone out there know, this book is wonderful. It's very similar to the Medical Phrase Index by PMIC. It's by Stedman's so you know it's reputable and catered just for the MT. I wanted to inform those interested in purchasing it, I found it on amazon.com. It retails for $66 but there are several sellers selling the newest version for $8 (includes shipping). New, not used as well. Sellers are best1bookbuyusa (who I purchased mine through) and dabearbooks and sweethomeliquid2. I hope this information benefits someone. Whenver I find a good deal, I have to pass it on.

Do you need dictationary or spellchecker? Stedman's [2008-03-29]
is good either way or Dorlands for a dictionary. You can use the line counting in Word if you are going by 65 lines. I don't know if you can adjust it or not. Sylcount is a good line counting program if you want to buy one.
What Stedman's to get? [2008-01-22]
For a newbie which stedman's is going to give me the most bang for my buck, until I get going. I am not sure and I have looked at the spellchecker for pharm and med, as well as just getting the med dictionary. Any thoughts would be appreciated. I currently have Taber's med encyclopedia and Mosby's Med Dictionary. Also buying the BOS.
Thanks
I like the Stedman's Medical Speller [2008-01-22]
I also have ortho and cardiology, but you may want to see what specialties you'll be doing the most before purchasing those. Also I like their electronic spell checker. It rocks!
I'd say an absolute must is Stedman's Spellchecker.. [2008-01-22]
I agree with the other poster I wouldn't buy any others until you know what speciality you will be doing. If you are doing clinic work I'd recommend Sloane's Medical Word Book. If you will be doing acute care and doing only one speciality then I would recommend a book related to that speciality. I like Quick Look for a drug reference.
Stedman's is the best. You can download from their website or [2008-01-03]
order the CD.
I stopped buying reference books ten years ago.... [2007-12-04]

equipment [2008-10-20]
I tell my students not to buy anything - reference books, equipment, etc. until they have at least 1 client -- then it's tax-deductible. Also, ask your new client if they have equipment you can use. Many small offices have a spare transcriber you can use.

You must have schools mixed up [2008-10-13]
As an M-Tec grad I must speak up. You do not have to buy hundreds of dollars worth of very poor reference works from them. Go on their website and see the reference books that are included in the price. As you have one instructor throughout the course, you have one QA opinion to deal with. This instructor will always be there to answer your questions. They have an IT instructor who gives online classes and who will always help you with computer issues. M-TEC uses the SUM tapes, which are real dictations, and I believe those might be the same ones you refer to as AAMT (actually now AHDI) tapes. After graduation your instructor and/or the directors will still be there for you as well as access to their website with all the information you had access to during the course. After graduation you receive access to a long list of employers that is updated on a regular basis, and you receive access to the grad forum where you can find information about employers/MTSOs. In addition, you receive job offers when companies/MTSOs approach M-TEC stating they have job openings. M-TEC has a very good reputation, and you receive excellent education. I have never had a problem getting a job. So, maybe you would like to check and see if that woman you tutored actually went to M-TEC.

Guess what [2008-10-01]
My doctor recommended this course to me. He and his fellow doctors perfer AHP graduates.
And guess what? I am smart enough to research online and in other books about transcription. I love reading the word help postings and trying to find the answer myself. That is good practice. I have purchased extra dictation to transcribe too. If you want to do anything well you have to give it your all.
reference materials [2008-09-10]
Can anyone recommend a good lab book, and a good surgical word book? I have my dictionary, abbreviations, and drug books covered, but I have a Career Step surgical word book, and I have not heard good things about it, so I would like to get a better one. I have never had a good lab book, and would like to hear recommendations from others before buying one. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!

Phone interviews [2008-09-10]
I've had phone interviews where they just asked me questions about which hours/days I wanted to work and to review my resume.
Then, I've also had phone interviews after passing the online exam that asked me to move away from my PC and reference books, get pen and paper, and then rattled off about 40 questions ranging from medication usage, meanings of medical terms, expanded abbreviations, body parts, spelling tricky medications and longgggg medical words, etc.
I'll never forget when I was asked to tell the recruiter what EGD stood for and also to spell it!
I told her, first off that is a word that most docs can't even say, no less spell and you want me to attempt it? lol Recruiter laughed, and laughed again when I told her I spell it by typing *egd and watch it magically appear on my screen. lol
Just relax during your phone interview(s) and don't be afraid to tell them you are a bit nervous if you feel that way.
The more you interview with different companies, the better you will get at it.
Good luck to you!

Where is the best place to buy Drug book 2008 and stedman books
Ebay and amazon.com [2008-09-05]
is where I found my best deals. You can buy used and new books on amazon.com from private sellers. I seriously got some amazing deals, most books or electronic books for only $5-10 shipped and these were newer editions. You just have to keep looking on both until you find the right price. Good luck!
Thanks [2008-08-06]
I really do appreciate you help and advice. When you start trying to find a good one, there are so many to choose from that it seems to become somewhat confusing.
I had already looked at the Stedman's spell checker. I already have purchased a few reference books from Stedman's.
Thanks again.

A bit of clarification [2008-07-25]
In the interest of accurate information, I'd like to clarify.
Andrews does not own MTDesk or a transcription service.
Maybe what I heard that Andrews, M-Tec and VLC were the moderators. I know Linda Andrews was answering questions as a moderator when I was on the site a year ago. I don't have time to research it now, but I know someone who knows for sure.
I know for sure.
These three schools each have a school forum on MTChat, which they moderate. Linda also moderates the coding and billing forum.
Andrews, M-Tec and Career Step advertise all over the internet 24X7.
Do you mean the sponsorship banners on MTDesk and MTStars? If so, I would hardly call them advertising all over the internet, since they're limited to two websites.
If they have a full-time waiting list then why advertise at $10 to $15 a click on Google?
We don't.
Deb, this is any school. . .
It is not Andrews.
I still predict that staffing schools will be the solution to very costly tuition and the 2 year experience requirement.
Just for comparison, tuition for hairdresser school here is $17,000.
Let's do a cost comparison. Andrews is, as Deb noted, $3800. That includes everything for basic, advanced transcription and specialty transcription--even hardcopy books and individualized instruction.
The cost of the same course content same program, as listed on a certain website advertised on Google, is a total of $2104 for the basic course and hard copies of books; 999 for the internship; 1198 for both advanced specialty modules; and 299 for job placement. That's a total of $4600, plus an additional $300 for any extension required.
The only difference I can see is that the latter teaches a typing class, while Andrews does not.

Andrews School
This is another school with a couple SM [2008-07-24]
of true references and then a bunch of homemade books. They even go so far as to imply that you're getting a Book of Style, but what you're really getting is another thrown-together homemade shortened version of it.
I didn't go to any school at all, I've been doing this for years. This school is a waste of money.
I'd not attend the Comm College if teachers are not helpful [2008-07-23]
Hi Allie,
I wouldn't attend that Community College from what you have said. The CC I went to had twowonderful teachers who were semi-retired MTs. I vaguely remember thatthe clerks I enrolled with knewvery little. I grew to be very impressed with the teachers over time. A great teacher is such a blessing.
Med Workshops' staffing school did a good job for us almost 2 years ago. I've spoken withthe owner Karen over the phone. She is bright and honest. We moved to another schoolbecausethey offered us a better deal financially. We will probably use Med Workshops again in the future sometime. Remember that they are like a wholesale alternative. They probably don't have a sales staff for the retail student.
But, a wholesale approach doesn't mean you don't get assistance. It means they make most of their money training students for individual employers. Companies like this don't advertise to the public. They contact the larger transcription companies and are looking at a different model. They are dealing in groups to be able to cut overhead, etc. etc. Companies like who I work for find this very appealing because a basic education is usually very similar everywhere because the same 2-3 teaching aids (books, CDs, online) are used by almost all schools.
We are looking at teacher/mentor support for the students and also the cost of education. We won't be able to find enough students at one time if we have to rely on a very expensive retail school- they aren't set up to satisfy our needs, but their program might be great. Retail at $3800 or wholesale at about $2000? For employers like mine the answer is simple.
I'm getting caught in a 25 words or less dilemma in trying to explain this. I feel some here will jump all over me if I don't say just the right thing.
I've been saying that, I see this wholesale or staffing school approach as the new wave in education because it solves problems for the students and the employers. It's a win win.
I hope everyone keeps an open mind and justconsiders these ideas. I'm not saying this is the only solution for everyone. Don't hit me, I'm just a messenger.
thank you [2008-07-22]
Thank you both for your responses. I ended up going computer shopping yesterday and found a great deal on a Sony Vaio at Best Buy. My books should be here this week, and then I can get started. Thanks again for taking the time to read my post.
a couple questions [2008-07-21]
Hi all. I have been reading this message board for a few weeks and have found many of my questions answered. I will be starting MTEC this week, as soon as my books arrive. I will also be purchasing a laptop tomorrow to use solely for school. I am looking at a Lenovo R61i, but I read on MTEC's website something about students having trouble with a 64 bit processor. How do I tell if the processor in the Lenovo is a 64 bit?
Also, I am just looking for some sincere advice about learning about the Medical Transcription program. I am so intrigued and excited to learn more and start school so that I may eventually work from home. Any advice will be appreciated.
TIA,
Linz

New Careerstep Student, Need Advice [2008-05-28]
Hi everyone,
I recently started the CareerStep programand I need advice on any good websites that have additonal study info? or reference books? or memberships? What is the average starting pay? etc.
You know what they say, if it sounds too good to be true ... [2008-05-18]
It says you can be reimbursed for 100% of the cost of the 16 Advanced Practice Packages which cost $59 each. This would be a total of $944, which is not the cost of the entire program.
While the textbook they use is a good one, it is also the only one that they say they use. Andrews & M-Tec use a lot more books. Although lots of practice is good, I believe the training you get before all that practice is the most important. What good are all those reports if you haven't learned what you need to know to transcribe them?
In five years I have heard nothing but raves about Andrews School and M-TEC. I have heard next to nothing about eSmartMed. That alone would be enough to steer me away from it.
Drug book [2008-05-08]
Stedmans Medical Dictionary is a good start. The drug books I use are Saunders and Quick Look Drug Book. The Quick Lookis good for beginning as it has a lot of information in the appendix section and drugs listed by disease process in the back. The AAMTBook of Style is a must have as some companies require youto follow the guidelines in this book; this book you can study now and it will help you be a little ahead down the road when you start testingfor jobs and working.Stedman's word books are good (each book for a different specialty), but you may want to hold off on getting any of these until you know what specialty you will be working in when you graduate. I do hospital acute care and so have the complete library of Stedman's word books.
I don't know how far you are in your schooling, buttesting for different companiesis the best way to know what you do not know and what to study.
I wish you luck in your schooling and hope it is a rewarding experience for you,
DJ
