Absolutely untrue - no school here [2008-11-24]
I never attended or graduated ANY school! Hired off the street at a hospital 5 years ago, due to my coding/billing background - I didn't even apply to be an MT, they asked me to try it. After 3 years left the hospital, applied to a major MTSO, hired immediately on the results of my test, after a year applied toa differentmajor MTSO, again hired immediately due tomy test scores. Soif 2 of the major MTSOs (Spheris and Webmedx) hired unofficially trained, uncredentialed little old ME,it proves schools and credentialsdon't pertain - its skillsthat matter.

Check with your school. [2008-11-17]
They should give you some leads on who hires their graduates.

What school did you go to? The better ones should be [2008-11-14]
able to help. If you have completed your studies try to get on with a local doctor's office/hospital.

What does the school say? Either it is compatible or [2008-10-25]
it isn't. You can dump Vista and use Windows XP, but then you can't reload Vista once you do that.

Allied Medical School.... [2008-10-24]
I have been taking the MT course through Allied Medical School.. Anyone ever heard about them? Also, they allow you to take the quizzes and test online open~book...will this hurt me in the long run? And, how do I become certified? Will I have to go take a certification test somewhere???????????

Unfortunately, the best time to ask about the school would have been BEFORE you gave them your money [2008-10-24]
Allied is a very poor course, it doesn't teach you what you need to know, you don't get enough good transcription practice, and unfortunately it is going to be difficult to find a job. You need 2 years' experience to take the CMT (certified medical transcriptionist) test through the AHDI (formerly AAMT).

If you are just out of school you don't have the [2008-10-20]
experience to get your own accounts. This is nothing against you personally. I would suggest you trying to get a job with a national or work in-house in your local area for a while. U.S. Career Institute isn't one of the better schools and once you actually start working you'll realize how much you don't know.

Her school should provide the names of [2008-10-14]
The school should provide her with the names of employers who will hire their graduates. How about having her apply to the company YOU work for? That would give them some assurance that she was worth the risk to hire.

I thought she was talking about the E school [2008-10-13]
Right, that couldn't have been M-Tec. Wonder if the person attended that school with the name that looks like M-Tec? Couldn't have been Andrews, either. They provide quality references as part of the course, so you don't pay extra. They're the ones some nationals require you to have. They use SUM and now include the ESL set. Their instructors teach different modules, so you learn to deal with a variety of QA approaches and styles, but they all use the same guidelines. They also help you see what can vary, so there's no surprise later. They doesn't require attendance at online classes, but they provide technical support even for grads, even years later. Support for jobs begins at enrollment with focus on employer needs and how to fit with that and you get access to employer recommendations well before graduation. Andrews simply has a list of employers who will hire their grads even if they otherwise require years of experience. I don't think they've ever had a grad who had trouble getting a job and most seem to get the job of their choice. They also remove problem employers from their list as soon as they hear about undesirable practices so that their grads don't get burned. So, whatever school that woman went to, it wasn't Andrews, either.

No, the school stinks in my opinion - sm [2008-10-05]
I worked with a lady once who went there. Oh boy, was she lousy. Needless to say she did not hold onto the job long, the mistakes were numerous and atrocious. She had previous experience of transcribing written doctors notes and putting them on the computer which she thought constituted MT experience (uh...it was all written down in front of her, slightly different); obviously that experience was useless. I hope for her sake she took the QA I did to heart and did not get too upset by it by taking it personally, but she needed a lot of work.

When your doctor hires you . . . [2008-10-02]
When your doctor hires you, come back and tell us. Historically, pretty much nobody prefers AHP graduates. Few doctors have ever heard of AHP and other employers shudder at the name. You should brush up on spelling, grammar, and punctuation. It's prefer, not perfer and there should be a comma before too. This whole series of posts looks like advertising spam from AHP. The I love and short, choppy, rah-rah sentences give it away. In any event, a good course would have supplied everything, so you wouldn't have had to buy extra dictation. Would have had teachers, too.

school [2008-09-15]
Hi, I your situation sounds exactly like mine. I went to Everett Community College (AHDI approved, uses Career Step cirriculum) and although people will tell you that MTEC and Andrews school are the best (and I'm not saying they aren't), they are very expensive and do not offer financial aid. I was able to get all of my tuition paid for by applying for FAFSA, and I became employed 2 weeks after graduating. You can also try Career Step, they do offer up to a 20% discount for special circumstances, as well as student loans at very low payment rates.. Good luck!

MTEC Grads [2008-09-12]
I just finished my coursework at M-TEC. I can't wait for my test to be graded...and I'm itching to find a job. Before my test, I was 95%. I'm wondering if anyone knows what companies routinly hire from M-Tec so I can go looking now and not have to wait till I am able to access the COC on M-TEC's website?

MT school [2008-09-05]
Yes, appx. 5k! I have been having problems with them since the beginning; it took them 3 weeks to grade my 1st transcript, ad my advisor is impossible to reach. When(if) I graduate, I'm going to call the FL state education dept. I do need a job!

attn. M-TEC and Andrews grads [2008-09-02]
Did any of you complete the program but were unable to get a job afterward? Does anyone know how many people enroll but fail to successfully complete these programs?

They are not a good school in my opinion. I was not able to find a job and they didn't help. The feedback I received was sparse and not totally accurate.

CAI School - Any Current Students/Recent Graduates? [2008-07-30]
Hi Everyone:Have any of you ever heard of the CAI School of Medical Transcription? Any current students or graduates out there? I've been checking out their website and they seem to have a terrific program. I've searched the archives and the last posting on this school was from 2006. It got rave reviews then, just checking on the school now.Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!FYI, the website address is http://www.caihometype.com

This is another school with a couple SM [2008-07-24]
of true references and then a bunch of homemade books. They even go so far as to imply that you're getting a Book of Style, but what you're really getting is another thrown-together homemade shortened version of it. I didn't go to any school at all, I've been doing this for years. This school is a waste of money.

First, I'm not one of the "little grads" I'm not their grad at all. [2008-07-23]
Just because for many years anyone who wanted could learn to be an MT from their next door neighbor, that doesn't mean that's the way it is today. I think too many MTs are just afraid of competition from well-trained MTs, who with a good education and a couple of years' experience will be better MTs than they ever will. I have seen MTs claim to have 20+ years' experience, and they make ridiculous errors and don't even care - That's they way I've always done it! I'm talking about the way things are today, not back when anyone who could type could be an MT, and could teach anyone else to be an MT.

Medical Trans. Staffing School- here is one Summer [2008-07-21]
OK! It was harder to find than I thought. They are in the middle of an offer to train right now so, Summer, you can see and read what they are doing. I didn't want to use the one we currently use for fear of being biased, but we did use this school for staffing about 1-1/2 yrs ago and they did a good job. Our company paid down the tuition somewhat to attract a large number of students at one time. We didn't pay it down this low. http://www.medicaltranscriptionjobstraining.com/page12249.asp $1990 for the Basics, short internship and a job. If I'm right this is about the same price as Career Step but you don't get internship or a job there. I think M-Tec is over $3000 and Andrews is probably close to that. How much is Andrews? Does anyone know their tuition cost? You don't need to pay retail prices to be trained and have a job. I know Community Colleges are very long and pretty costly so this is a good alternative. Of course, Penn Foster, US Career, etc are really a tough way to go. I think a recentgrad of US Careertold me she had trained on tapes- Whew!!!!!! I'm afraid there aren't as many MT staffing schools as I thought. The other one I found didn't remotely compare to this one.Beautiful website!

I'm a trainer at my Job and I get Allied grads [2008-07-15]
Lynette, I've found the key to making it work for Allied grads is to follow up with a good internship and job training placement. We do this at our company and we have Allied grads who work out fine. What they seem to need is 2 to 3 more months of hands on training to be ready to produce valuable work. There is no reason to give up or quit and spend $3400 with Andrews to be able to retake APT (anatomy, physiology, terminology). And I believe Allied uses the SUM material for Beginning Med Typing- SUM has been around for decades I think. A recent trainee of mine went to Allied and followed up with internship at Med Workshops. The internship made it happen for her. She is now doing fine and going on 1-1/2 yrs employed with us. I want to go a little further on this subject: Tuition is going to have to go down in the current economic climate. $3400 and up for tuition is just too steep for most people. Even the best schools will be hit hard by the reduction in discretionary spending.

Anyone even thinking of starting school SM [2008-07-13]
for this field, go to the Main Board and read the post from I AM DONE - I didn't type it, but it's a pretty good summary of what an MTs career ends up to be.

Also, DTS out of Tennessee often hires newbies. Don't get discouraged... My girlfriend graduated and started getting scared after about 5 wks with no offers. She is now working for a new company and loves her job. Just be persistent.

CareerStep [2008-11-24]
I found CareerStep through the AHDI website, and I was very impressed. I have not found anything bad about them, the only problem is the price. Right now I would be approved 100% for the Pell Grant, which would be like $4,800, but from reading over their website they don't take the PG. And the only thing I've been able to find is my local community college who of course takes PG. But then again the problem with that is I have to wait til' classes start, and then go by their roster and only go so fast... and eh. I'm the type of person that would MUCH rather prefer CareerSteps type that you can go as fast or as slow as you want. So I was wondering if anyone could share their thoughts on CareerStep, preferrably someone who has actually gone to school through them, as I'm not big fan of my friend.... stories. I don't care if you have negative or positive thoughts, as long as it was you personally who experienced it.

This personally happened to me...sm [2008-11-24]
I worked in a pharmacy and filled a prescription for a neighbor of mine whom I knew was sleeping with another freind of mine's husband. The rx was for HIV meds. I was seriously stressed over this. I knew the laws but what about my friend's life?? She had a 2 year baby girl and was pregnant again. Well, I rationalized it this way. If I said something, I would lose my job and I had 3 kids of my own to support and I wasn't sure what the legal ramifications would be. Also, she knew he was cheating on her and she kept him around. That's the risk you take when you keep a cheater in your bed. I decided my family was more important. I eventually moved and don't have contact with her anymore so I have no idea what came of it. But it was a very difficult situation to be in. Also, while in MA school, our instructer told us a story of a girl who worked at a doctor's office where her neighbor was a patient. She saw the results of her neighbors cancer test and when she got home that evening, called the neighbor to give her condolances or whatever. Well, the neighbor hadn't gotten the results back from the doctor yet and was unaware until this girl called her. So, the lesson being, NEVER open your mouth, no matter who or what.

Exactly! [2008-11-22]
I know exactly what you mean. I am having that same problem. I guess there are just too many people out there that have just finished school and are trying to get into this business. I just wish there was at least one company out there that would give us newbies a chance. I understand what their concern is (MTs not having enough schooling and having to work harder training them), but there are quite a few of us out there that did get good training and would like to have a chance to prove themselves. One day....One day....

Thumbs up [2008-11-19]
I have come up with a great idea. I too am a new graduate who was a Transcriptionist for over 10 years, but that was 10 years ago and does not count. I did not go to A or M. The person that wrote about the organization looking to line their pockets with dues instead of protecting us is correct. I received an email a few days ago that offered to sell me a list of over 100 MT companies for the sale price of 49.99, 50% off the regular 99.99. I have a list provided to me by my school along with one I have made myself going on sites like this. If I cannot find a job soon, I am going to sell list. LOL. I would not be so cruel. Unfortunately, there are some very naive people out there who are willing to buy these list, because I checked out the name on the company and they have a real nice web site and are apparently making money. Now back to the scum who are sending our jobs overseas, I know many of you are living from paycheck to paycheck, but when I become totally flustered, I begin to mindlessly wander and I think, what if we (as if I had a job)all refused to work for any company that outsourced overseas? I have compiled a list of all companies that I know outsource overseas and I have sent it with a nice letter to every US senator and congressperson, even the new President-elect and I have demanded they investigate these companies. They are not regulated by the same privacy policies we are. One MT in India who was doing overflow work for a US MT who was doing work for UCSF Med. Ctr. threatened to post the patient's medical records on line if not paid a ransom. I am writing editorials to all newspapers and advising the US public not only are American citizens being put out of work, but their medical records are not private and that little privacy statement they are given is not worth the paper it is printed on. A few lawsuits against a few hospitals and they might spend that extra 3 pennies a line to have the work done in the US> I am getting angry just talking about it. I know many of you are busy and do not have time, I have also worried if I was too vocal I would not get hired. Well, I have not been hired and as long as overseas outsourcing is allowed I probably will not geta job. Therefore, I will probably do what I do best and become an advocate for the down trodden of this profession. I am 53 and I had forgotten what it felt like to have a just cause to fight for until now. Patti

Have you new MTs seen what is going on [2008-11-19]
I am just curious why anybody would want to get into this profession. It takes years and years to get up to speed...especially in order to work at home on your own...all to make $4.00 to $8.00 an hour? Has recruitors and MTs school been feeding you poor students a line of crap? If you are young..or if you are stay at home mom thinkin you can make your own hours and earn a good living it is absolutely not possible. There are rigid schedules to be kept and the money is absolutely on par with working at a fast food restaurant. This profession is difficulty and takes a lot of work to get up to skill...I am really curious..why would anybody try to be an MT now??

Check with your school. [2008-11-17]
They should give you some leads on who hires their graduates.

Drop out now! [2008-11-17]
I just recently finished their course. You will probaby run into a lot of nasty MTs here that tell you that you must come from a certain school to get a job. I am not one of those. What I will tell you is that USCI provides almost no assistance finding jobs. They don't give you a list of companies to apply to. Their employment assistance consists of a book full of outdated information. I know I have the skills to get the job done, and I am willing to work very hard for next to nothing to get my foot in the door, but it is very difficult to find employment after graduating from USCI unless you are able to work in-house at a local hospital. I am stuck now, but I strongly advise that you drop the program while you can still get some money back and enroll in a different program.

Sorry to inform you... [2008-11-16]
The problem you have is that you didn't graduate from an AHDI-approved school. That doesn't mean you won't find work...it will just be harder!

You mentioned that you would even ..sm [2008-11-16]
be willing to do an intern to get experience. Well I did one with the AIM program. It is through Allstate Transcription. She hires some interns too.

bah humbug [2008-11-16]
AHDI-approved indeed. Great intro into the war-is-peace world of AHDI, big fat facilitators of offshoring & traffickers of the CMT credential. They want you to believe that you need their organization (which you don't), so that they can continue to fatten their bottom line along with their tool of the crime, Prometric. There are plenty of good schools, & in the end it depends more on the initiative of the student both during and after MT school.

AHDI.........s/m [2008-11-16]
I agree with deenibeeni, this has nothing to do with getting hired or not. Most of the MTSOs and clients do not care about the AHDI and if the schools are accredited or not. Clients set their own format requirements, often disregarding AHDI rules. They know about M-Tec and Andrews, which are the 2 best schools and prepare the MTs better than the other schools, but who can afford them? Otherwise, I do not think that there is a big difference between one or the other MT school. Once hired there is a lot of on-the-job learning, especially technically.

I need help [2008-11-16]
Hello, Im a new Medical Transcription graduate and im looking for work. But no one seems to want to hire me. Does any one know of a company that hires new graduates. Thanks

I got a job but......sm [2008-11-15]
I used a different school that sounds similar to Allied. I feel likea dork for falling for their hype.I did find a job but it was a couple of months after finishing. Most companies require at least 2 years experience.(which the school does not tell you). The other thing is, I don't know about Allied but, my school did not teach me in the way the real world works. I learned on standard cassette tapes and knew nothing about how it's really done now a days.Nothing.Basically, I was trained as if I were going totranscribe for a bunch of local doctors, go to the offices and pick up the tape, transcribe them (in my own time and schedule, just have them back to the doc by the due date)and take them back. Send them a bill and get paid. Thats sooo way off. There are hardly any docs who don't use an MTSO now a days. So my advice to you is...don't give up. I applied to tons of companies before I got hired and was ready to apply to tons more. Just know that there are hundreds and hundreds of companies out there. There a few who will hire newbies. If you really want this job, don't give up. One will come along. Go to some other MT boards to find out whose hiring. Go to the company websites. Sign up on mtjobs.com. They send you lists of companies that are hiring. There's a lot you can do if you take the time. In the meantime, while you're waiting for replies, use the internet to further educate yourself. I can't tell you how much there is to learn. Not just about medicine but also about things about the job. Expanders, platforms, reference materials, productivity,ASR, there's just sooo much. Just from reading posts on this board and others you'll find out what you need to learn. About the job itself, you'll find a lot of different opinions. Some people hate it, some people love it. A lot of our jobs are being sent overseas. For some people the pay is crap, some people make good money. Some companies have flexible hours, some don't. From research, I think most companies adhere to pretty regular schedules. Do research and make up your own mind. I've been doingresearch on other MTSO's so I can leave this one soon. I'm going to start applying when I get to my 1 year point.I started a list of the good/bad/maybe companies and the ones to do more research on and I'll apply to all of the ones on my good list. You can find a lot of info on this board about companies. Good luck to you. I wish you the best.

How I did it and have been doing for over 10 years.... [2008-11-14]
Okay, it is time to let the cat out of the bag on how you are going to be successful as a Transcriptionist out of school. The first thing I am seeing is that these schools promise that you will be working from home making in upwards of $40,000 a year. Forget about that. You are new to this. If you come out of school working on a production basis you may very well fall flat on your face and make $3 an hour by the end of the day. I was a transcriptionist for almost 5 years working for a hospital and I decided I could make more working on a production basis.......I failed miserably my first year. First off, get experience under your belt and make an hourly rate in the meantime. How did I do this? Well, I started out getting a job in a hospital, any job I could get. I started out in billing, even though I wanted transcription. I watched and waited for openings, when finally someone in the psychiatric unit called me (I made friends with everyone, the key to getting calls like this one)and said they were losing their transcriptionist and I should apply. I applied and got my first transcription job, making an hourly rate. Had I not gotten pregnant with twins I would probably still be there. After babies were born, went back part time in the evenings. This time since I had experience and another local hospital was willing to hire me in the radiology department. Again, hourly. I watched and waited once again (I hated radiology transcription). I got to know who was in charge in the transcription department. I sent her a fax asking her if she needed any part time help (back then there was no work related email). She said, yes, I could work part time (I now had experience). The part time went to full time with benefits. However, I got bored and decided to work for, of all companies, Medquist. I thought with my speed I would be making at least $20 an hour.....hahahahahahahahaha, what a joke. I was lucky to make $8 an hour with them. After about a year of struggling I finally got my foot back in the door of a hospital in another state. I had to commute to the hospital every day during training, it was awful, however, now I again work from home, have the ability to make about $20 or more per hour, I own my own home, own a half decent car, I am divorced and don't take any child support from my ex, instead we share in the custody 50/50. The moral of my story........ Get your foot in the door. Look for jobs that are front desk, secretarial, whatever. Once you are in there and they realize how great you are you can go wherever you want. My first transcription job in the psychiatric unit also involved secretarial duties, so not just straight transcription. I highly recommend getting into a hospital. The bennies are the best and lots of hospital transcriptionists are working from home with full hospital benefits. If you can't get into a hospital, get into anywhere where you can do some sort of typing/transcription, that way you have your first reference/experience when you apply to a company that is strictly work from home. Everyone wants experience, they just don't want to be the ones to give itto you. I am so tired of seeing these schools and companies swindle people. If you are looking into training, I highly recommend your local community college. You will probably take some credit college courses that will be able to be used should you decide to do something else. My local community college has a course for under $3000 and there are college credit courses that are able to be used towards another degree. I did my training as a medical assistant, transcription was only part of the course. However, now I am so bored with transcription that I am going back to school to be a nurse. I hope this helps someone out there. Good luck to you all!

I'm sorry that this happened to you guys. [2008-11-13]
It's so frustrating, I sure wish more people would check into these schools and ask questions before they plunk down their money. For just a bit more than that $3000 you could've attended either Andrews School or M-TEC, which are the two best schools out there. And it definitely would've been cheaper than paying Allied AND then paying Career Step. Unfortunately, even when people DO ask questions beforehand, and they are told that these schools are inferior, there's always SOMEBODY who managed to find a job after completing these bogus courses and they don't hesitate to insist that you don't need to pay the money for the good courses. Just because a few people get lucky, they are definitely WAY outnumbered by the people with your same complaints who cannot get hired without shelling out more money for a REAL MT education.

they make it sound so good [2008-11-13]
They make it sound so good when you call and talk to them about the course. You know the $50,0000 or more a year for a course that takes less than a year to get through and the false promise of job placement. I have decided to go back to my old job ( at least for now) as good as it sounds being able to work from home and still be a great parent, sitting here waiting for work isn't going to buy my kids christmas. So I am going to go back to work and get my paycheck every two weeks and learn from my mistake. I will be looking into more course from a better school so that I can do this job someday. I can't just keep putting out resumes and keep being turned down and not passing tests and try to keep my chin up. I am starting to feel really stupid and getting seriously depressed. No career is worth that. So good luck to all of you out there.

That's discouraging.. [2008-11-12]
I hope that it'll be easier than that to find work. I'm also finishing up with the Allied Medical School Transcription Course and I've been working on it for a year and 1/2 ! I was also under the understanding that we would have job placement... (Sigh) I hope we can both find work easy.. b/c our family is in major need of my income too after studying. Very scary to think though that these years wasted on study will not be rewarded with a decent job in the end.

Im sorry [2008-11-12]
I hate to feel like I was mislead and lied to, my husband was taking this course to and when he seen what I am going through he quit, they did give him his job placement money back but all else was lost. I was so excited to get my job placement that when I got the first set of assessment tests I called them and asked what is this. I was under the impression that you provided jobs not testing more. The worst part is most of the jobs respond back with I need to take a Career Step course before I can get hired. Career step is a different school. So I don't feel as if I learned enough for Allied to get a real job and as I said before, be sure to research the company that they do send you to because they do not and I got scammed. My heart is not in this anymore. I keep trying but I really feel like I wasted a lot of time and lost alot of money. I hope this is not how it will turn out for you. Good luck to you.

ALLIED [2008-11-11]
Okay, so I am about 85% done with the Allied Business School Medical transcription course. I have done very well and gotten pretty much 90% to 100% up until this point, whereas now, as it is getting increasingly difficult am struggling through getting 80% to 90% when I'm lucky. But here's my question to you all. I have been reading through the posts here on Allied and needless to say, it has NOT been encouraging. I realize that with any message board there is a lot of negativitiy if you are searching for it. I have learned a lot. I quit work almost 2 years ago to be at home and concentrate on the studying. We are in desperate need of my income in our family and I am beginning to worry that I made the wronog choice in choosing Allied. They told me that there was job placement with benefits upon graduation. Now, I read here and see that I may have been misinformed. So, what would you do if you were me? I in now way would quit at this point after investing over $3000. But, should I search for further study or just hope that I can find work and if not, try Walmart? I plan on really going all out, but we can't afford an additional 2-year-long search for employment after taking 2 years off for study!

I too made a mistake [2008-11-11]
I received my certificate from them in May, The guy that I talked to at the school said this field paid 10cents per character at 65 in a line making it $6.50 a line. haha and we paid the extra $1000 for job placement for life. with the promise that as soon as I got certified they would send me a doctor to work for and if I didn't like that one they would send me a different one. Only to find out that they do not send you doctors, they send you assessment tests and you have to do the background check on the company yourself. I was sent to a company that has been scamming people for over eight years by not paying them, so I got my first and only job in June and worked for no pay until September and it is now November and I have no job and no money and very little help from the school on finding one, and I am seriously considering going back to unloading semi trucks for a living. Oh yeah and most of the places they have send me suggest I go to a Career Step training course. So I am very sorry about the decision I had made to go through that school. I hope you have better luck than I did. I would not recommend anyone to go to that school. I feel like I have been lied to from the very start. Good luck.

Not sure where you had heard this info, but we never would hire anyone and allow them to work for free. We pay competitive rates for every single new hire. Our training program that we used to have was a FREE program offered to new grads.

Since a comma can completely change the meaning of a sentence, it is very important for youto learn when and when not to use a comma in the MT profession. Your school is right to be very critical of comma use. Employers will be very critical of punctuation and grammar. You must have a very good grasp of English grammar and punctuationin this profession to be successful. You will be transcribing for many ESL (as well as some English-speaking)dictators who have no clue how to form a sentence, so purchasing a book on the basics of English grammar and punctuationsuch as English Made Easywould be a good investment. Good luck to you in your new profession

Ok so I am about to graduate med. trans. school and I am wondering..... how stern are employers about commas? I tend to use too many or not enough and my school is very critical of this but I am wondering if employers will mark me off for not using a comma or using one. Thanks so much for your help!
