The MTs initials . . . [2008-09-01]
You're ok. The MT's initials don't have to be there. The MT is not legally responsible for the content of the document-the physician is. Once he signs it, he's responsible. Mind you, I'm not a lawyer, but you can see from the BOS that the initials aren't required. If there was a legal requirement, you would have heard lots about it before now. There would be a whole chunk of the law section of HIM texts devoted to it--and there isn't. If you WERE responsible, you would have to sign the report in ink (or electronically), and you don't see MTs doing that. Your initials can be removed. If you provide the electronic file for him to print, he can change anything he wants. You can't be held responsible for what ends up in the record if what ends up there can be changed. I wonder if he thinks that he'll save money by not having to pay for the extra characters? Another possibility is that he doesn't want anyone to know you did his transcription. He might feel he needs to keep his options open in terms of fiddling with reports later, perhaps when he's trying to bill a higher level of service, get a denied claim paid, or if he needs to cover up a bad outcome. If your initials are all over his records, an investigator might know right where to go for copies of originals and testimony as to what you transcribed. :)

I have picked the brains of my local fellow transcriptionists and just wanted to get another point of view. I Go figure. Thanks again.

Scoping: Legitimate and Lucrative [2008-06-06]
Hello, All. Someone sent me this link, and I wanted to give you some information -- straight from the horse so to speak -- to assure you that this is definitely *not* a scam, and *is* very real. I have been involved in the scoping field for 25+ years, and have been a scoping training consultant for a little more than 20 of those years. Scoping is a marvelous at-home career, and I say that as someone who started out as an MT, and then began applying my medical skills in the areas of medical malpractice and environmental impact litigation, right from home and working in the court reporting field. Scoping is still something of an underground occupation in that many people never heard of it. But court reporters *have* heard of it, and they're the ones you'll be working for. We started hearing, when I first started in this field 25 years ago, that computers would take over and we humans would be out of a job. Now I ask you: Have you ever met a computer program that can think like a person? I The human element is still very much needed in this field, and people earn from $15 to $30 an hour editing for court reporters. I offer a free video webcast to people exploring scoping, to let you see what scoping is all about (including a demonstration of the specialized software we use in this field), and how my rapid e-learning course for scoping works. It's all done in PowerPoint/Flash modules, with backup written materials in .pdf files. Feel free to e-mail me and request a link for the informative scoping webcast: judybarrett@scopingcareers.com Judy Barrett, Scoping Training ConsultantAuthor of forthcoming e-book Scoping for Success

Last hospital job I had, supervisor had relative also working under her. Even though my average line count was double anyone who worked there, and I worked the night shift,I was told that myself and the only other girl I worked with talked too much. Thiswas the girl who helped me train my ear on the ESLs there, became my best friend, had no problem with me talking to her, or talking to me, had an awesome line count and accuracyherself, and left shortly after I did. I left because the super and her SIL(can you saynepitism) ended up setting me up like a bowling pin.Jealousy is an ugly thing. Now I like to imaginethose typesfighting amongst themselves. I spend my days getting the job done, while they spend their days conniving how to make someone who is getting the job done look bad. What is amazing is that the most supposedly educated higher ups dondon BTW, not long after I quit, everyone involved was fired including the super, director of MR, and head of Risk Management who also managed to get involved. The only one left was the SIL, instigator, trouble maker. Looks like she wrecked havoc on everyone around her, not just me. If you have that much time to cause trouble, and complain about nothing, deflect attention from your lack, then you surely candoing your job!! I call them campaigners, probably should have gone into politics. I You couldnIt was as bad as any Survivor episode I

Scarry!!! Docs and nurses entering drugs and dosages into online charts. (sm) [2008-05-08]
Most of my docs cannot spell medical terms. They can The nurses are for the most part useless - no ARNP I ever asked could help me with a medical term. I just spoke to my HMO. They are now offering personalOnline-charts showing visits, tests, immunizations, etc. of what you personally had done. I asked EXACTLY HOW DOES THIS INFO GET INTO THE SYSTEM, at what point? The woman said: It is input by the doc and the nurses. I shuttered! There goes the end of quality health care as we used to know it!

IC STATUS IN MAINE [2008-04-29]
Has anyone else heard that the state of Maine does NOT recognize IC status? Or any other states? Thanks. Just want to know if I've been breaking the law all these years. Rosie

Health Records [2008-04-19]
Where can I find info stating how long AHDI recommends an MT business retain health records?

other probs [2008-02-25]
Other problems with using a cell phone include who is around you. I'm sure we've all heard the story of the divorce attorney who was discussing the case in a bathroom stall and the opposing attorney was sitting in the next stall. Cell phones are bad if people are around. Also in states where cell phone use is prohibited in moving vehicles, doctors can break the law by doing so. I had one in California where the law is hands-free only I believe. Genius had Tom-Tom giving directions in the background while dictating!

Parole Board Hearing Typing [2007-08-20]
Hi. Is anyone out there doing Parole Board Hearing typing? I've just started doing some, and would like any helpful references, sharing, etc. Thanks so much.

Legal transciption [2007-04-18]
Yeah, I've been wondering as well. How far apart are medical and legal transcription and court reporting/transcription? If you can do one, do the rest fall in place with a little training?

transcribing ver batim "F" word sm [2006-12-16]
Transcribing a legal document from dictated material. The dictator is using the F word bomb, not that often, but it is a part of his complaint about language used on him. Iexpletive used. If it's verbatim, I think I owe it to the client to get his word across. What do you think? I am going to ask the same question on the other board, although it will apply to general medical transcription. I have been told in this case I may use quotation marks. Anyone else been in this dilemma?

certification for typing [2006-07-10]
have any of you ever heard of becoming certified on Brainbench.com's website? They are an ISO certifier and you can take the typing test for free. If you attain a certain score you are designated certified and can use that in your applications, resume, etc. A lot of employers pay attention to that so I hear. Anyway, just thought I'd pass that along. I was certified today as a master typist....sounds kind of pretentious, but maybe it will do some good for future work. Who knows?
