legal transcription [2007-05-04]
http://www.speak-write.com/ is a company that utilizes general and legal typists. I worked for them at one point. It was nice because you could schedule yourself by the hour from week to week so if you wanted to work an hour in the morning and five in the evening you could do that. They were really flexible.

Does anybody know where I can begin to search for legal transcription jobs? TIA
Legal Transcription [2007-04-19]
I have done legal transcription for five years in the past. It is much easier to me than medical transcription. Once you learn the legal terminology thaton the job. There are paralegal courses.
Legal Transcription [2007-01-19]
Yeah, that would be great. But I think it's pretty difficult to find legal work from home unless it's contract work only. If you don't need benefits and can exist on contract work only legal is great to do from home. If you don't need to work from home you can make great money working as a law office word processing operator. I'm training for MT just because I want to work from home and have some benefits.
Legal transcription [2006-12-24]
I am a medical Transcriptionist and have done legal work. I am transcribing something now that will be admitted to court. I sure hope Ialter my transcription.
Happy holidays and thanks for your input. A little nervous about this one as I'm doing it on a trust basis.
I obtained my AAS in Legal Transcription, but [2006-09-07]
As I only found jobs that were offering little pay and no benefits, so I never worked in this field. I ended up going back for medical transcription and have been doing that for the past 9 years. I am now going back for my RN degree. Anyways, I went to my local community college for two years if you are looking for a place to find education in this field. Good luck to you.
Medicolegal work would be a subspecialty of medical transcription. [2006-07-08]
VERY interesting, and lucrative to boot.Knowledge of this came in handy while I was a juror on a medical malpractice case.
From Louisiana, but do not do... [2008-10-29]
legal transcription, only medical.
no pay [2008-09-28]
I was wondering if there is any recourse that an IC can take against a company/person who has not paid them for transcription work done for that company. This company has disconnected all of their phone lines and email addresses and has not paid what is owed to me (and others) for work done. I am owed about $1400. Thanks for any help. SC
The MTs initials . . . [2008-09-01]
You're ok. The MT's initials don't have to be there.
The MT is not legally responsible for the content of the document-the physician is. Once he signs it, he's responsible.
Mind you, I'm not a lawyer, but you can see from the BOS that the initials aren't required. If there was a legal requirement, you would have heard lots about it before now. There would be a whole chunk of the law section of HIM texts devoted to it--and there isn't. If you WERE responsible, you would have to sign the report in ink (or electronically), and you don't see MTs doing that.
Your initials can be removed. If you provide the electronic file for him to print, he can change anything he wants. You can't be held responsible for what ends up in the record if what ends up there can be changed.
I wonder if he thinks that he'll save money by not having to pay for the extra characters?
Another possibility is that he doesn't want anyone to know you did his transcription. He might feel he needs to keep his options open in terms of fiddling with reports later, perhaps when he's trying to bill a higher level of service, get a denied claim paid, or if he needs to cover up a bad outcome. If your initials are all over his records, an investigator might know right where to go for copies of originals and testimony as to what you transcribed. :)

Legal transcription. Scoping and proofing. Any ideas what this would entail and what pay scale might be?
MT & court reporting are WORLDS apart [2007-05-23]
Having studied both court reporting and medical transcription, I can tell you that they are worlds apart. Court reporters learn 'machine shorthand' and by using this and their steno machine, they can 'type' 200+ wpm. They type in syllables and entire phrases or sentences, not by single characters as we do in MT.
Actually, people who edit for MT and court reporting actually have more closely related jobs. Check out www.scopists.com Some court reporters type in Real-Time, and the people who scope for them just basically clean up their work, fix missed strokes, etc. There are also people who 'translate'/type the machine shorthand, which is much more detailed and takes a lot more studying/schooling. Another site to check out is StenEd for resources and reference materials.
You could, of course, always apply to be a legal secretary and type in a law office. :D
HTH!

Legal transciption [2007-04-18]
Yeah, I've been wondering as well. How far apart are medical and legal transcription and court reporting/transcription? If you can do one, do the rest fall in place with a little training?
Good question [2007-01-17]
I'm a retired police officer think maybe I would prefer legal transcription over medical

transcribing ver batim "F" word sm [2006-12-16]
Transcribing a legal document from dictated material. The dictator is using the F word bomb, not that often, but it is a part of his complaint about language used on him. Iexpletive used. If it's verbatim, I think I owe it to the client to get his word across. What do you think? I am going to ask the same question on the other board, although it will apply to general medical transcription. I have been told in this case I may use quotation marks. Anyone else been in this dilemma?

Legal transcriptionist, too [2006-07-16]
I, too, am a legal Transcriptionist and started out in a very similar way. Worked for a law firm for a while and transcribed briefs and correspondence for the attorneys. Once my daughter was born I wanted to find something that I could do at home and started my transcription business. And I agree, it has been a long journey and I'm still trying to build up my client base 10 years later in order to make enough so that our family is not so dependant on my husband's income. My clients are varied and include insurance companies, state agencies, translators, authors, court reporters, attorneys, etc. The problem is that the work is not consistent so I must always be on the lookout for new opportunities. Anyone with any marketing ideas I would love to hear what is working for you.
I have long yearned for a legal transcription message board and even toyed with the idea of creating one myself if I had enough techno savvy because the medical field is flooded with message boards but the legal field really has nowhere to go to discuss issues that are unique to our chosen field of work. So THANK YOU for including this board on your website for us!
scoping [2006-07-07]
no, I transcribe only. I do not scope. I download work from FTP sites usually and do my work digitally using special software and either Word or Wordperfect. Most of my work is form of depositions but I have done lots of other general transcription work for many types of businesses, individuals.
legal tx [2006-07-07]
well since my journey was a long one, I couldn't really advise you re today's opportunities, i.e., schools, etc. I started out as a legal secretary. I work for myself, not for any company. As I said before, I mostly self contract to court reporters and/or other people who have clients (general or otherwise) that have transcription needs.
