help.....worked for hospital as IC and [2008-11-09]
contract was with hospital. Company who owned hospital (not the same as hospital) filed BK, and did not pay last two paychecks. I was just told new owner of hospital will not pay any vendor prior to purchase of hospital. First check bounced, and told next check not even going to be cut. my question is: since I am contracted with the hospital and not the old owner directly, doesn If the old company filed BK, i was not listed as a creditor or served with BK papers.

The MTs initials . . . [2008-09-01]
You're ok. The MT's initials don't have to be there. The MT is not legally responsible for the content of the document-the physician is. Once he signs it, he's responsible. Mind you, I'm not a lawyer, but you can see from the BOS that the initials aren't required. If there was a legal requirement, you would have heard lots about it before now. There would be a whole chunk of the law section of HIM texts devoted to it--and there isn't. If you WERE responsible, you would have to sign the report in ink (or electronically), and you don't see MTs doing that. Your initials can be removed. If you provide the electronic file for him to print, he can change anything he wants. You can't be held responsible for what ends up in the record if what ends up there can be changed. I wonder if he thinks that he'll save money by not having to pay for the extra characters? Another possibility is that he doesn't want anyone to know you did his transcription. He might feel he needs to keep his options open in terms of fiddling with reports later, perhaps when he's trying to bill a higher level of service, get a denied claim paid, or if he needs to cover up a bad outcome. If your initials are all over his records, an investigator might know right where to go for copies of originals and testimony as to what you transcribed. :)

employment horror stories [2008-06-25]
AMEN on that one, sister!! Here is my little story about working in an ER.. We ended up with a manager who, among other things, left his previous job because he was another nurse who was new (who wanted to be manager) began sleeping with the manager mentioned above...they caused so much division; people who had been friends for years became enemies, snitches, etc., and fired a nurse who had been working there at least25 years for something totally bogus. Then the male manager left and guess who became the NEW manager (his little girlfriend) who then subsequently hired the It became so intolerable I left and glad that I did...

Scoping: Legitimate and Lucrative [2008-06-06]
Hello, All. Someone sent me this link, and I wanted to give you some information -- straight from the horse so to speak -- to assure you that this is definitely *not* a scam, and *is* very real. I have been involved in the scoping field for 25+ years, and have been a scoping training consultant for a little more than 20 of those years. Scoping is a marvelous at-home career, and I say that as someone who started out as an MT, and then began applying my medical skills in the areas of medical malpractice and environmental impact litigation, right from home and working in the court reporting field. Scoping is still something of an underground occupation in that many people never heard of it. But court reporters *have* heard of it, and they're the ones you'll be working for. We started hearing, when I first started in this field 25 years ago, that computers would take over and we humans would be out of a job. Now I ask you: Have you ever met a computer program that can think like a person? I The human element is still very much needed in this field, and people earn from $15 to $30 an hour editing for court reporters. I offer a free video webcast to people exploring scoping, to let you see what scoping is all about (including a demonstration of the specialized software we use in this field), and how my rapid e-learning course for scoping works. It's all done in PowerPoint/Flash modules, with backup written materials in .pdf files. Feel free to e-mail me and request a link for the informative scoping webcast: judybarrett@scopingcareers.com Judy Barrett, Scoping Training ConsultantAuthor of forthcoming e-book Scoping for Success

Scarry!!! Docs and nurses entering drugs and dosages into online charts. (sm) [2008-05-08]
Most of my docs cannot spell medical terms. They can The nurses are for the most part useless - no ARNP I ever asked could help me with a medical term. I just spoke to my HMO. They are now offering personalOnline-charts showing visits, tests, immunizations, etc. of what you personally had done. I asked EXACTLY HOW DOES THIS INFO GET INTO THE SYSTEM, at what point? The woman said: It is input by the doc and the nurses. I shuttered! There goes the end of quality health care as we used to know it!

other probs [2008-02-25]
Other problems with using a cell phone include who is around you. I'm sure we've all heard the story of the divorce attorney who was discussing the case in a bathroom stall and the opposing attorney was sitting in the next stall. Cell phones are bad if people are around. Also in states where cell phone use is prohibited in moving vehicles, doctors can break the law by doing so. I had one in California where the law is hands-free only I believe. Genius had Tom-Tom giving directions in the background while dictating!

MT & court reporting are WORLDS apart [2007-05-23]
Having studied both court reporting and medical transcription, I can tell you that they are worlds apart. Court reporters learn 'machine shorthand' and by using this and their steno machine, they can 'type' 200+ wpm. They type in syllables and entire phrases or sentences, not by single characters as we do in MT. Actually, people who edit for MT and court reporting actually have more closely related jobs. Check out www.scopists.com Some court reporters type in Real-Time, and the people who scope for them just basically clean up their work, fix missed strokes, etc. There are also people who 'translate'/type the machine shorthand, which is much more detailed and takes a lot more studying/schooling. Another site to check out is StenEd for resources and reference materials. You could, of course, always apply to be a legal secretary and type in a law office. :D HTH!

I had a bad experience -management did not side with me. [2006-11-05]
Another employee found out my pay and told everyone. One day the manager stopped me and asked me why I had discussed my pay with others. I had no idea why she said that. I asked her what was going on? She told me that Mrs. X was discussing my pay. I told her I had not told anyone and would never discuss that with another employee. I told her the only people I had disclosed my pay to were the caseworkers for my son's medicaid and subsidized daycare. (Human resources had to fill out a form.) She asked me how Mrs. X knew, I told her I had no idea! Then she reprimanded me. (Looking back it really upset me, because Mrs. X was bacially a trouble maker and everyone knew it! For some reason they were afraid to fire hire.) I'm guessing Mrs. X looked in my purse when I stepped out of the room we worked in. I was new and didn't know her history, but she a reputation of being a gossip. About four months later she was caught reading the private mail of a physician. (It was mail he had opened and placed in a drawer.) She still was not fired. I don't know why the manager sided with her over and over again. Some people just get away with whatever.

I actually ended up leaving because [2006-11-05]
I couldn't respect that manager enough to work there anymore. It's a shame, because the rest of the job was a great fit for me, I liked the other people, and the doctors were very appreciative of my work. Even the good hourly pay and benefits didn't make up for her deficits. Their loss.

legal tx [2006-07-07]
well since my journey was a long one, I couldn't really advise you re today's opportunities, i.e., schools, etc. I started out as a legal secretary. I work for myself, not for any company. As I said before, I mostly self contract to court reporters and/or other people who have clients (general or otherwise) that have transcription needs.
