Yes. The post above yours states if subcontracts [2008-01-18]

If her contract states that she is doing the [2008-01-18]
transcription, then no way can she subcontract it out. They have a right to select who does their work.
Recently on the news... [2008-02-08]
They were talking about companies bringing all areas of outsourcing back to the states. I guess companies are finally starting to hear the US publics' voice. I don't know how long it will take them. This was for major companies that send their service and support overseas. I am hoping Dell will join the other companies and bring their service and support back here as well. Just thought I would add what I had recently seen on an evening news broadcast. It was a very small blip about this. Hoping for more soon.
looking for insight [2008-01-24]
About a year ago, I received a whopping quarter of a cent increase and was basically told not to ask for another rate increase for at least a year unless my production increased to well above the 800 lines per day that my contract states that I'll do. That's been impossible to do because of the lack of work on their system for the last 3-4 months. I guess I struggle with the fact that I really have no MT credentials, just on the job training, but I'm told I do great work. I'm also hampered by the fact that the owner of the company is somewhat of a personal friend. I want to look into other options, but because I'm still relatively new to the field, I don't even know where to begin. Thanks for your response!
IC status [2008-01-18]
They can choose to contract or employ someone else to do their transcription if they do not like her methods, but per IRS they cannot tell an IC how to get the job done.
Who is an Independent Contractor?
A general rule is that you, the payer, have the right to control or direct only the result of the work done by an independent contractor, and not the means and methods of accomplishing the result.
I worked this way a lot when mine were younger. [2008-01-18]
So, they adjusted well to in a minute replies.
This IC needs to stop answering the phone. An IC makes her own hours. She If they don The OP can get a new job as an IC without set hours like she needs and can probably do at this point.
Discouraged [2007-12-31]
I agree wholeheartedly. Corporate America is public enemy no. 1, not just for us, but for many workers and small business owners who are fed up with corporate greed.
This is why John Edwards may well win the Iowa caucus and perhaps be the next President of the United States. I too would not advise anyone to consider medical transcription. I would rather go homeless than work in sweatshop mode for Medquist or any of the other transcription giants that pay in the neighborhood of 6.5 cents per line.
I also think the sooner you get started the better. I think this [2007-05-10]
job would be perfect for you not only because of your previous work experience but because MT is a job you can do from anywhere nowadays. Many of my coworkers have relocated to warmer states and they're still with the same company therefore you're able to keep all your accrued benes:))
Good luck to you.
You make it work if you really want it...sm [2006-09-29]
I went to school over 10 years ago with every intention of working at home when I had kids. Well, 3 kids later, and that's what I'm doing:-) My oldest child is now 8 and remember putting him in the swing next to me. When he started walking, that was another thing. It took a few companies to find the right fit and schedule for me, but I did it. I find that the best schedule is a flexible one with no deadline, something I've had in the past that stressed me out big time. I now have an 8, 5 and 3-year-old, with the 5 and 8 in school. You make it work if it's what you really want. I would never put my kids with anyone but me, but that's just how my husband and I feel. There are actually a few tips below of what some moms do with their little ones, some very good ones! I feel very lucky to do what I do and be there for my kids. As for the things you'll need, just like the poster below said. Ask your company or it should be stated in your contract. I needed a fax machine. I have tons of books that I still use if Google doesn't do it. You'll see as you go what you need and don't need. If you have Shorthand, start adding things in and building that up as much as possible. I have so many sites added to my favorites all organized into their own categories that I just go to easily. Enjoy working at home! It's been good to me and my family:-)
