I'd have to agree with this wise post. [2008-01-08]
I agree with the work environment. Thank goodness my Momma didn I found clever ways to integrate work, child rearing, and ways to rest my body between typing stints. I consider myself a productive MT when I need to be. I do not work for a national, but I would if I had to and lost the accounts I have for myself. It wouldn I am no where near retirement, but I It is definitely a skill and I learn something new every day!
The OP, hang in there. This is a changing profession, but some things hold true liek this poster points out.

Being on unpaid leave is not really an issue for me, as we will have enough in savings for me to be off for a while. Also, I will not have to worry about finding someone to replace me while I am gone. I just wanted to know if the normal time was 6 weeks, 8 weeks, 12 weeks, etc. Thanks!
As I was reading your post sm [2007-05-30]
before I got to the part about a neighborhood teen, I kept thinking, my daughter would love to live in your neighborhood. She (14) spends so much time with a 2yr old across the street and does it for free. She truely enjoys him and this is great experience for when someone really wants to hire her to do babysitting.
On the subject of a more flexible schedule, are their any local MTSOs, sometimes they are more [2007-02-02]
flexible, or maybe you could pick up a small account of your own. Good luck!
I thought the same thing when I read that post... [2007-01-30]
It is obvious she does not have little ones or she keeps them locked in a closet! LOL! When you have little ones around while working, you have to be able to learn to go with the flow so to speak! In other words, learn to multitask and be flexible. My schedule changes almost daily between my 3-year-old son and 18-year-old son who is a senior this year and constantly in and out of the house. Just do what works for you and those little ones. Remember, they are only little once!
Funny, I came here to post about what to do about kids who are so unbelievably selfish and sm [2006-10-13]
I am literally losing my mind and control over here. I have 3 - a 9 year old (in school), 4 year old, and 2-1/2 year old. All boys. The 4 year old is extremely demanding, abusive to his brother(s), mean, disobedient, etc. you get the picture. The other 2 are pretty calm as they can be. So, it's pretty much my middle one who makes me very upset throughout the day. I NEED to work, and for some ungodly reason whenever I sit down to work they both NEED SOMETHING!!! If it's not one thing, it's another. They don't take my job seriously. It's a joke to them. I will sit my 4 year old down and explain how important mommy's work is and he will either yell in my face or just walk away. I think my 2 year old understands more than he does. Don't get me wrong, my 2 year old is quite demanding himself, but at leasst he listens! He will pick up his toys if I tell him and so will my 9 year old, but this 4 year old will look at me like I just told him to run outside naked, will probably throw a fit, AND won't pick up his toys.
I had a serious talk with my husband the other night and told him that I was seriously thinking of taking a leave of absence from work (which we really can't afford) so that I can WORK on my 4 year old and 2 year old right now. They are out of control. I don't like being out of control (right now he's yelling in my ear about the ice cream he DIDN'T get today - yes, he did. This morning). So, I will have to continue this later, but you get my drift.
I love my children dearly. More than anything. But I swear to you, I WOULD LOVE a few hours in the morning or afternoon so that I could work. Enjoy it and count it a blessing that you have alone time. Think of me and many others who CAN'T work at home and be productive because they have extremely demanding and selfish little kids needing 100% of them while their company and work suffers......I have come to the realization that I just can't have both. I either have to WORK or STAY HOME WITH THEM without work. I can't do both. You might can, but I definitely can't. I'm not wired nor cut out to do it all with all this drama surrounding me all day.
wasn't sure where to post this since really is not MT-related but here goes -- sm [2006-08-21]
Guy in my neighborhood has beenpicked up and supposedly shortly to be indicted(but not convicted) of being a pedifile. Nothing will come up on the predator web sites until they are convicted. Short of listening to all of the gossip in the neighborhood, how do you think I could find out the real story on this? I don't want to call the local TV station or newspaper, in case it is all a big misunderstanding. In the meantime, the neighborhood is thinking the worst, and basically has this guy convicted before we have even one scrap of the story. Any one with a similar experience?

New Board [2006-07-05]
This is a new board for Work at Home Moms (WAHM).
how do you describe MT work... [2008-11-12]
I donbecause it sounds like fun or those who don
I can How can I explain this job to them? Most people do not realize that I had to actually complete MT school, which takes 18 months to 2 years+, and that even though I had a doctorate, it did not matter in this field, I still had to do the MT school because I did not have MT experience?? I have one friend in particular, who is a medical assistant and thinks she can just jump right into being an MT and will be great at it because she has experience. However, I had experience as a PA and have a doctorate and STILL learned quite a bit...seriously it just drives me crazy lately when someone says oh, you work from home...can you get my sister a job? She wants to work from home too... or something along those lines.
Sorry if I Thanks in advance!
Homeschooling moms? [2008-09-16]
I put this question out on the Gab Board....don't really know if that was the place for it. Does anyone here homeschool and work from home? I would like to pass some e-mails. I'm new at homeschooling this year.
Been there...done that [2008-07-24]
Please don't beat yourself up. I've been exactly where you are and it's not a hard place to end up. I could have written your post. I lived in my PJs and sometimes wore them for days, no make-up, and the same issues with even basic daily hygiene, i.e. showers.
The best advice I can give you is what worked for me and that is to GET OUT OF THE HOUSE! I had to put MTing on the back burner and actually took a job close to home as a waitress! Believe it or not, it did wonders for my self-esteem. Most people would consider serving the public a degrading position or demotion from what I had done before. I needed the structure, a time-clock, and just basic interaction with other human beings. After close to a year, I am back at home working once again as an MT. Public service can be difficult, but it was just the boost I needed to get my mojo back and appreciate the fact that I'm in a field that allows me to work at home. Believe it or not, I miss the people so much, I'm considering going back to waitressing a few nights a week. I actually even made more waitressing than being an MT!
Give it a shot. Waitressing may not be your first choice, but I would definitely advise finding any type of job that will get you out of the house. It will give you a reason to fix yourself up and dig the make-up bag back out.
Please feel free to email me if you'd like to talk.
Good luck to you!
Walgreens [2008-03-12]
I just posted this on the gab board too:
I was wondering if any of you know how to shop and get tons of free items or nearly free from walgreens!? I just started2 weeks ago and iare no fees or whatever other people trying to make money do! =) Just passing on some fantastic ways to save money and get some pretty cool things.
I went to a business college sm [2008-02-11]
that had just added transcribing to their cirriculum. I was 1 of 4 first students. They really had no idea what they were doing. I got my first job doing dialysis patient's cause a friend was giving up the job and knew I was looking. The doc was desperate and didn't even test me. There is no way I would have gotten the job if I had to test. the job I have now if for an ENT and once again didn't test, one of the docs is my step-uncle. When I look at just the questions on the word help board I know there is sooooo much I still don't know. I am looking into taking some classes online. Good Luck to you!
looking for insight [2008-01-24]
Hello All, This is my first post here. I have some questions about my current employment situation and was hoping for some insight from others who may have been in my shoes before. Basically, I have been working for a small transcription service for the last 2 years.I came into the field as a way to have a flexible, at-homeschedule for my school aged children and just to earn a little extra cash per month. I donformal MT training or education but because of the bachelorreally love the work, but after 2 years I am only making 7.75 cents per line. Each time I get comfortable with a certain discipline and begin to increase my line count, the employer switches the account I'm on and I'm back to square 1. Also due to the limited availability of the work she has right now, I'm only getting 5-10 hours a week, if that. Sorry to be so long-winded, I suppose I'm just wondering if 7.75 is a fair rate for 2 years experience and if I'm getting the shaft by being switched from 1 discipline to another every few months so that I am never able to increase my production/pay. I would appreciate any thoughts or suggestions. Thank you.
Since you asked... [2008-01-20]
... I like the name Mya, but why would you hang any of those other names on an innocent child? I completely understand wanting to be different. I really do, but when I read your post, I just shook my head. Reminds me of a birth announcement I saw online...someone named their beautiful baby girl Jersey.Life is tough enough....why add to it with a name that canor that makes a teacher look a her class list and ask, Is that a boy or a girl?
Do you have children? [2008-01-10]
Since you are on the WAHM board, I guess you have kids. That makes it even more difficult. I am sorry your husband is not more supportive, some of us have been there or know someone who has. If you are going back to your job and have kids, time will be tight. I hope you find someone who would give you a few hours once in awhile. Keep all your stuff and don't give up on it. Come on this board, check all the new terms, etc., stay in touch and some day perhaps you will fool your husband and shine as an MT. Good luck to you. I hope you keep up your skills in MT, don't be discouraged, you can do it. If you have the courses behind you, perhaps some local doc may love to have you transcribe a few hours per diem
Do you really have to . . [2008-01-08]
work a job for benefits/insurance. You did say we in your post, so I If you have insurance/benefits provided already, shoot, I say take an MT job until you are very sure about your decision to return to work outside of home and that you find appropriate childcare. Just my 2 cents.
I'm giving up and I'm sad. . .(kind of long) sm [2008-01-08]
I have decided to give up my dreamof beingan MT. I have worked for approximately 6 months with 3 different companies. The first 2 lost contracts or didnmy husbandoff my back. I knew they weren't hiring, but I thought if I at least made the effort to get my old job back, he would leave me alone. My old boss was very glad to see me and said she had wanted to call me and ask me to come back, but she didn't want to make me feel bad. She said she didn't have any openings, but she will hire me anyway because she didn't want anyone else to snatch me up first. That made me feel really good, but I was kind of hoping she would have just said she didn't have anything for me. So, I start back next week. Anyway, I did not mean to make such a long post. I don't have anyone to talk to because all people see is how much money I could be making at my other job. No one cares that I love the work I am doing as an MT.
Thanks for listening.
Potty training woes... [2007-12-21]
My 2 1/2-year-old daughter will not potty train! She likes sitting on the potty, but she won I bring her in there when I go and show her what it We had a toddler potty that we started with, and she didn She asks to go on it, I put her on, she asks me to sit there and watch her, and she just talks to me about stuff...I say, go potty..., go poopy..., make water..., listen for the tinkle... etc. She will then get off the potty and pee on the rug.
I have a sticker board with Dora stickers that she can put up everytime she goes...there are no stickers on it.
Any suggestions as to what I can do? She is very big for her age, and I found size 7 diapers, but they are getting a little snug...I can It does not bother her to be in a poopy diaper, and she does not like it when I change her and use wipes...
MT has worked very well for me [2007-12-19]
I know you don't hear this a lot on this board, but I have found MT to be a great profession. I work for a national, have been there 2-1/2 years, started fresh out of M-TEC,and will make about 45K this year plus benefits, my 2nd year of employment. I have been very fortunate to be on a good account for the entire time I've worked for this company, so I know it inside and out. I find the job to be quite low pressure now (not so the first year - it was tough). With GOOD training, a strong aptitude for the work, the ability to keep your butt in the chair, and some luck, a decent income is possible by the second year. I made about half this my first year, though. It does take time.
Making a decent living as MT [2007-12-05]
Good luck! I It used to be a good job but since eScription and voice recognition has come into the picture, it no longer is good. Jobs have been eliminated. The wages keep going down instead of up. I used to work for a hospital because it was better paying (hourly plus incentive). Then, eScription came on board. That changed everything! Wages changed from hourly to strictly per line. I Now, it really doesn For what? You What You work your butt off in both places trying to make a decent living.
OMG [2007-11-25]
Honestly, if you don OP), radiology, and pathology. It is rough for a newbie coming into this field straightfrom home - these MTSOs will pay you beans, like 5 to 7 cpl - that is hard to make a living. If you are willing to put up with this until you can gain experience, that is up to you. But toreally make money, you have to make at least 8-10 cpl or more(depending on ESLs and difficulty factor of accounts). (I have 18 years experience and have accounts wehre I am paid.0875 cpl gross line and 12 cpl/55 character line). You would start out at a low hourly rate starting out at a hospital or MORE depending where you This is just one scenario I am giving you. There are lots of variables, of course. Just my 2 cents. Take care!
Is this bad??? (long msg) [2007-10-16]
My daughter will be 2 1/2 in 2 months. She has always been a really awesome sleeper. Since she was 8 months old, she has been going down at 6:00 p.m. and sleeps until 5:30 or 6:00 the next morning. My 8-month-old daughter is following the same pattern. Nowmy 2-year-oldis getting to the point where she either will not take naps at all or not be tired when I used to put her down (11:00) but then gets very tired around 2:00. I really don
I don She is a very good girl, but very demanding. She is going through her terrible two Not to mention I have my baby.
Anyway, for the last 2 weeks or so, my oldest will go down at 6:00 if she does not take a nap, but by that time she is very tired. If she does take a nap, I only let her sleep for about an hour and then put her down at her regular time, and sometimes she will sit in her crib for an hour just talking...
I feel so horrible about leaving her in there when she isn Not to mention, I feel like I Should I be fearful of that?
I realize this board is for people towrite their opinions, but please refrain from being nasty...I already feel guilty enough.
WAHM wannabe [2007-10-15]
Hi, I am new ro this board but was lookin for advice...I have 3 children at hm and they are growing soo fast so after being the med field for only 10yrs doing med bill/collections I am lookin into med trans, so that I donI already have in their lives, but with so many courses offered online does anyone have any recommendations as to which is the best?? ANY RECOMMENDATIONS ARE GREATLY APPRECIATED
I've been trying to figure that out too... [2007-10-11]
I guess this is a kind of an old post, but hopefully you I work as an IC for a smallMTSO making 8 cents per 65-character line, and I really like the company, but I really need to make more money. I am doing some work for a local counselor and am charging her 10 cents per 65-character line. I would really like to make 12 cents per line as well, but 10 cents for psych reports is actually paying pretty well.
I got a call from a local nurse practitioner Her office manager said she paid the last lady 8 cents per line, but I From my own rough estimate, 8 cents per gross line is equal to about 12 to 13 cents per 65-character line for the clinic reports that I I think they are calling me next week, so I will let you know what happens. I guess they are very unhappy with their current Transcriptionist - she is backed up to June, and she has a 7-day turnaround time that she can I could definitely make their lives waaaay easier if they are willing to pay me a fair amount. Iknow I'm worth it!
Anyway, I think you need to take a lot of things into account, i.e., do you have to use your own paper and ink, do you have to drive far to pick up tapes every day or every other day, what kind of turnaround time do they want? I would be willing to charge a little less if I didn I would say just make sure you have a great resume that emphasizes professionalism and skill, and prove to them you are definitelyworth a decent wage! The docs also need to realize thatif you are an IC they do not have to pay taxes on you, so that also saves them money. Imake sure to give them a copy of my IndependentContractorI am legal.I hope some other people reply because I would really like to see what people with a lot of experience have to say about this. Sorry for the extremely long reply btw!
Thank you for your help!!! [2007-09-29]
I thank you for the help and will look at the job seekers board and see what they have.
Yes! Job seekers board [2007-09-29]
I have used the job seekers board here many, many, many times, always with success
No you are not alone... - [2007-09-14]
I have a 5-year-old and a 3-year-old at home. The 5-year-old just started kindergarten, but before this year, they were home with me when I was working. I too had a hard time getting in my lines.. The job I was working at wanted me to guaranty 4000 lines a week, what a joke. I could barely do 3000. Some tips I learned from this board are to make sure you are using an Expander and using it to its full ability. Even if it seems silly to save a couple of letters in a word, this adds up and you can be a ton more productive during the time that you are able to type. Also let go of the guilt. The kids will remember the times you did spend with them, not the times you did not. They will remember that Mom worked at home so she could be with us... Something that also helped me is to make a schedule - actually write it down. I know it is kinda hard with the little one, but at least you can use it as a guide. Let the kids know a little while before you have to start working that Mamma is going to have to go to work in 15 minutes for a while. Try only working an hour at at time and put a timer on so that the little ones know when the timer goes off it is time to have mommy time.. Know too that this too shall pass... The older they get the easier it will be. As the younger one gets older, she will play more with the older one and that will help you to have a little longer work times on your schedule. Do make sure to take a break for just you once in a while (even if it is to just take a shower) because you do not want to burn out either..
In the meantime, prayers are there for you if you want them.
Hugs sue-ellen
what???? [2007-08-30]
Are you saying that someone should ONLY take a week for leave or more?? I'm confused by your post...it sounds like you are saying it is inexcusable for anyone to take more than a week off after a baby?? Am I reading that correctly???
IC MTs, how long was/is your maternity leave? [2007-08-21]
I already posted this question on the main board, but I just realized that I might get more answers on the WAHM board.
If you are an IC MT and had a baby while being an MT, how long did you take off for maternity leave? I'm just trying to get an idea of what is the norm. Since I'm not an employee, I don't really have restrictions on how long or short my leave is (of course, it's unpaid leave). The MTSO that I subcontract for is very cool and flexible and would not have a problem with any leave that I request within reason. Thanks!
try these sites [2007-07-10]
I have found a few sites. www.dotcommommies.com is free. I have found quite a few jobs actually from www.expertnetsurf.com, which you have to pay a fee for, but it is a little under a dollar for each newsletter you get. On that site though, there are a lot of other ads and such so you need to be careful exactly what you are looking at and what you order. That one has jobs for pretty much everything working at home - accounting, data entry, telemarketing, photography, medical coding, computer graphics, etc. If you have any questions, feel free to post another reply and I can email you more information. I actually have a whole page written up on all the sites I have seen and instructions and descriptions for each because I have had such good luck with them and other people I know have wanted the information. Another one is www.homejobstop.com. Also, there is www.freelanceworkexchange.com. Hope this helps.
Thank you [2007-07-10]
Thanks so much for the websites. I thought my post had been deleted but I found it today, it was just moved. I will definately look into these websites. Thanks again and God bless!!
Interesting article [2007-07-01]
This article is about why meditation helps people. I thought it would be nice to share with this board because this talking about what you are feeling is something I once witnessed my SIL doing with her daughter - talking about how she was feeling. Sounds like a normal thing a mother would do, but mine didn't. I was fascinated that she just worked that into a conversation, and here this article is basically saying she was brilliant to parent that way, even though the article isn't on parenting at all.
