Working at home while caring for 1-year-old son. Can it really be done? [2008-10-21]
Seriously . . . Can it? I work second shift. Most the days I am starting once I lay my son down for his afternoon nap (around 12:30 p.m.) and then working until the end of my shift with a lunch in the middle. My husband doesn My son has recently decided he needs less sleep, which is understandable since he is getting older now. He has cut his naps down to about 1 hour a day. That means I have to try to work from about 1:30 p.m. until my husband gets home trying to take care of my son at the same time. He usually is pretty good about playing on his own or sitting on my lap watching me, but he is teething now and is very, very needy. He won I just switched jobs, so I can Any suggestions or help or tips would be greatly appreciated. I wish I didn I am just totally stressing about not making enough to pay the bills and trying to keep my son and husband happy all at the same time. Tips and suggestions would be very, very much appreciated. Thanks.

Update on 1-year-old [2008-02-06]
It seemsthat the situation was only temporary, thank god!!!! He is back to sleeping until at least 5 gets a small bite to eat and back off to sleep until about 7. But, he has decided he will only be needing the one nap a day. I hope letting everyone know that my woes are over for now doesn't back fire. (LOL) Don't ya love how life is so unpredictable!!! Thanks to everyone that let me know that I was not alone. Jenn

Did not work for my 2-year-old... [2008-01-31]
He just gets himself all worked up and throws up all night long if we are not careful. We have gone through a few nights with no blankets as they were either being washed or waiting to be washed. our 1-year-old hasn't done this yet, but he doesn't have the tummy issues the older one has.

Can someone tell my 1-year-old [2008-01-28]
that 2:30 in the morning is not playtime. And if he is going to wake up in the middle of the night like that he should at least consider sleeping in even half an hour would be nice. Just venting as I am terribly exhausted and now the 1-year-old is asleep and the 2-year-old is awake.

18-year MT Mom of 4 for 25 years [2008-01-15]
My heart goes out to you for the situation that you The thing that stands out most in your message, much more than the financial issues, is where you said that if it were not for your kids, you It is in fact FOR your kids that you should be gone -- and sooner rather than later. I took my own advice, and to this day, my only regret is that I didn I believe in leaving for the sake of the kids, not staying. I truly know how hard that it is to do, but your overall well-being (and that of your kids)will benefit in so many ways. You won Gee whiz! What My very best wishes are with you. Best of luck -- just remember -- we make our own, at least to some degree. p.s. I am not the anon who posted above.

I did very well my first year and beyond [2007-12-07]
Stay away from the companies! Try for local clinics and hospitals first. You get better feedback, more experience and better pay! I was able to work at home though I did start out doing some things in the office. It still takes time and ALOT of committment to learn, but it can be done.

I just turned 40, have a 3-year-old and want one more! [2007-11-08]
Im sure you didn Some of us who choose later in life motherhood got there different ways. My first husband I married when I was in my twenties. We tried for many years to have a child and found out through testing that there was no way for us to conceive naturally, as he had extremely poor sperm quality. We divorced and at the age of 35, I remarried. I got pregnant right away and I had a beautiful son. I just turned 40 last month and I I would have loved to have had children younger, but it didn Life takes us on interesting paths!

You are so right! If this year is as bad as last, I'm done! nm [2007-09-10]

Some companies are more flexible than others about your hours. The company I work for allows you a 12-hour window to get your 8 hours in. My son is quite a handful so I have put him in preschool 4 hours a day and I work those hours and then I work 4 more hours after my husband gets home and can handle the little livewire. If I have to work with him there I try to find things he can do while I work like watching educational videos or playing education games on another computer.

... is in that range and many other grads that I know have made the same their first year. I don I feel that if someone gets quality training (regardless of WHERE) and has the initiative to work on their production, they can make the same too. I was able to start out doing acute care and thanks to my training was completely prepared. What is wrong with sharing that information???

Are more in the range of $20k to $25k the first year. There is a good bit of a learning curve to increase your production/pay. HTH!

Last week we kept our 3-1/2-year-old [2007-01-31]
granddaughter and her 1-1/2-year-old brother for 6 days while their parents were on a cruise. I worked from 4:00 a.m. until they got up each morning (about 7-7:30). Then I did not work again until they were asleep for the night, about 8:00 p.m. I then worked until 12:30 or 1:00 a.m. Good luck finding a schedule that works for you. You can do it, and I admire you for wanting to spend quality time with your daughter!

I have a 3-year-old [2006-08-26]
I work for four hours in the morning and then I work another four hours from 9:00 p.m.-1:00 a.m while she's asleep. It's been easier this summer because her 12 year old sister helps me out a lot while I'm working in the a.m. In the winter I'll get up a little earlier to work in the morning while she's still asleep. It's worked out well for me.

We went through the same thing with our 4-year-old son...sm [2006-08-14]
He would cry and fuss when we would put him his bed. We would leave the hall light on until he fell asleep, but now he doesn't need that and complains about it. We took him out of the toddler bed and put him in a double and found he slept much better at night. He picked out his own bedding and was very involved with the whole process. We also make it a point for him to know that everyone is going to bed and we tuck him and his sister in at the same time. It does take time and sticking to the plan once you set it in place, but the end result with be achieved. Good luck!

Getting my 3-year-old out of my bed... [2006-08-09]
Hi, Help! My son and I have fallen into a habit of cosleeping together since he was about the age of 1. He started out in his crib and then practically overnight he just refused to sleep in his crib so it was just easier to put him in our bed and probably a little selfishness on my part to have him close to me, too.He is now 3 and I am ready to move him back into his own bed. I have a toddler bed in his room, but he sleeps in my king size bed with me. His dad and I separated at the end of April so did not want to make any major changes just then, but he will be going to preschool three days a week for two hours each day and I feel he should be in his own bed by then; this will start right after Labor Day. I believe he and I will sleep much better. He is such a wiggle worm and takes up a lot of room and I am no longer sleeping well with this arrangement as I am sure he is not either. Although I do enjoy the closeness we share, I really miss having a good night's sleep! My older son also slept with me when he was little and he eventually out grew it, but I do not know if I can wait that long with this one. I need advicein making this transition as smooth as possible. I do not want this to traumatize him as he is so used to me being right beside him every night. I have bought a fish tank for his room and we bought a Beta the other day so he is spending more time in his room when he is awake enjoying the fish. I have also dropped subtle hints about sleeping in his bed and keepinghis fish company at night, but he says he wants to sleep in my bed. Any and all suggestions would be appreciated, especially from those of you that have experienced this dilemna with your own children.I think he senses this is difficult for me, too, and maybe that is why he is resisting the idea so much.

I have 1-1/2 year old twins [2006-07-29]
but I don't work full time. I work 24 hours a week. To work full time I would have to pay someone so the difference in the money makes PT worth it for me. I enjoy the extra time with the kids. When they go to school I will probably go back to full time. (I also have a pre-teen). I work for MedQuist, so my time is scheduled -- which is difficult. But so far so good. It can be done I'm sure. If you really have to work full time then see about getting a Mommy's helper (I'm assuming you work from home ?????). This is what my sister does with her toddler and newborn. Plus the babysitting does some light housework. Good luck, and let us know if you have more than 1 on the way!

I am a single Mom too and homeschooling my too boys. I thought I was the only one! Especially as a single mom. My boys are 15 and 10. My oldest I have homeschooled through an umbrella program (Christian Academy parachoial school locally). They provide all the curriculum, teaching plans and record keep. He can take classes on site for the ones we cannot do at home (chemistry etc). It's our first year. There were safety issues in public schools by me. He is doing very well. Mostly independent. I come up at lunch time and answer questions and help with any issues he might have and check his work every evening/corrections. My youngest has a developmental delays. We use Time 4 Learning I work IC right now so have a 24-hour window. He needs more one-on-one help. I need insurance so looking to possibly change from IC to employee stauts and not quite sure how we will handle it. Right now my IC job doesn't have much work in the early morning while they sleep and this when I need it. But often I work at night when they are bed. It's definteily not easy. But I do see it's a great value to the kids. I am happy to chat with others. I am in Michigan

I've dealt with 3, but the best/worst of them... [2008-11-16]
...was my neighbor just about 2 years ago. She must have thought I enjoyed having that just rolled outta bed look every morning running my kids off to school and rushing back home for work, the lack of sleep from working 2 jobs and barely leaving the house; ya know, all the PERKS of working at home. Such a glamorous life of leisure I lead making 100K+ a year transcribing inside my mansion with maids and servants cooking and cleaning for me during the day, taking moonlit cruises on my 100 foot yacht every night. Oh yes, look out for me being featured on Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous and Better Homes & Gardens as I'm just rolling in dough here and have got it made with this life of leisure. NOT. After explaining what an MT is/does, she gave the standard OHHHH! response. She must have absorbed very little from our chat: Typing, paycheck, work at home. She was convinced this was an easy way to make money from home and if I could do it, then she certainly could excel at it. So, disregarding my advice, she took a $700 terminology course at the community college. She bought a Vera Pyle book, foot pedal and headset and was ready to work from home. She even had a job waiting for her after completing the terminology course. The job was being handed to her at 7.5 cpl from her friendthe largest MT company. It was also this same woman advising her she ONLY needed a terminology course. Shame on her! I tried to warn my neighbor, guide her, offer my help to get her started properly, help her through a file if needed, but she never took me up on any of it. My neighbor it really wasn't even a day, I would say it was more like 30 minutes. She heard 1 actual dictation and ran away from the computer. When I asked her how it was going with MT, she told me what happened and gave several excuses: She decided she couldn't sit here all day just typing. She couldn't understand anything the doctor was saying. She didn't have time for it any longer. Her excuses just went on and on. I really felt badly for her seeing as she chose to believe the wrong person's information regarding this field and also the fact that she gave up so easily after spending all that money. For weeks afterwards I would ask her if she was going to try it again or further her MT education to at least have a better chance of succeeding. She now had a better understanding that MT is an actual job and it involves a lot more than just owning a computer and simply typing. Her answer to this day remains no way. When I that too gets the OHHHH! response, but it also sends them a message my job is not easy without having to explain more.

hard, but can be done! [2008-11-12]
I started working from home when my daughter was just under a year old and my son was 3. I have been at it for almost 2 years now. It can be very, very hard at times, especially when my husband doesnbad days. However, I can say that after the first few months it got a little easier. I try to have activities for them to do while I work, and I just plan on having LOTS of interruptions. My job is not very flexible and I have to work set hours, so there are definitely days where I don't meet my quota...I usually make it up later in the week though.

I did it - it is possible! [2008-11-05]
I started working from home when my son was just almost 2-1/2. Before that, I worked at a hospital and he was shifted from babysitter to grandma to daddy four days a week. I know you said you canmommy sitter. That's where a child (they say ideal is 8-12 years old) comes to play and entertain the children while mommy has something else she needs to get done in the house (or take a bubble bath!). It wouldn't cost much to pay a child so young and the child's parent would be reassured by your presence. Plus, a child that age with no younger sibling might truly enjoy playing with a 1-year-old. That might work until your husband comes home. Keep working at it. Sometimes it just takes a while to adjust and kids go thru periods of straining at the confines of a schedule. Work at figuring out a schedule until you find one that works. You CAN do it! And it's worth it!!

Doing both daily... [2008-11-05]
Don't know how old your child(ren) is/are, but my son is 9 and I finally found a program that makes my job as teacher much easier. I'm using Switched-On Schoolhouse (from Alpha Omega Publications) this year for three subjects. That means my son can be working on his schoolwork on the computer while I'm doing transcription work on another computer. He occasionally has a question or needs help, but this rarely takes more than 2-5 minutes and is often just needing a clarification on a question. You have to be really creative in your approach, and I get up really early to start work before he's awake. He gets up, reads his devotional, does his chores (animal care) and usually makes his own breakfast (it's usually microwaved oatmeal or cereal, but he's learning how to cook eggs), then gets started on schoolwork. Don't get me wrong - I don't ignore him the whole time and we do take a few minutes together when he gets up, even though I'm supposed to be working. It'll take some time, but you'll fall into a routine. It may not be perfect, but it'll do until you figure out a better way. Hang in there!

Homeschooling moms? [2008-09-16]
I put this question out on the Gab Board....don't really know if that was the place for it. Does anyone here homeschool and work from home? I would like to pass some e-mails. I'm new at homeschooling this year.

Really possible? [2008-09-13]
I will be happy if I can make about $15,000 a year and the only benefits are help with professional development costs. Anne

Hmmmm....best thing I can tell you... [2008-09-11]
is get out, while you can! Seriously, you mention nothing whatsoever of love, compassion, tenderness, or anything that is so important in a relationship! Nowaday, marriage is an inconvienence. I realize you just had a baby and have a toddler, I have children ranging in age from 2 to 16. You do not have to stay with someone just because you had children together!!! Obviously, you are in a very unhealthy relationship. I seriously doubt he will ever change. Feel free to email me. I myself ended an almost-20-year relationship and myself and my children could not be happier! I do not mean to sound so blunt, but you have some serious thinking to do! Do you really believe that is a healthy relationship? Honestly?

one-month-old-- have one too. [2008-09-08]
My daughter was born 08/08/08, and I also have a 15-year-old and a 3-year-old. I commend you for going back in one week!! I should be back already, but just can My normal shift is 5 a.m. to 1 p.m., and I have been laying back down with her after she gets up her once a night, until most days 8 a.m. at least. When we started giving my son cereal at night at 4 weeks, he slept longer. Put it in his bottle to start with a larger nipple, and then spoon fed also.Maybe try spoon feeding abit of cereal mixed with milk beforelaying her down for the night? Docs do not recommend it, but it sure helps them sleep longer/keeps their tummy fuller longer. It has worked for my first 2 sons!! I have never breast fed, so don Every baby is different, and you will probably have to adapt to her schedule, rather than she to yours. That is what is good about flexible schedules-- I go back to work this Wed. and have a VERY flexible schedule/boss. Good luck with this, I have it pretty easy, my daughter gets up only once a night, but it may be 2 a.m., it may be 4:30 a.m., than she goes back down and it is WAY too temptnig to lay back down with her, instead of getting into the groove of getting up by 5 a.m.!!! SHe also sleeps the largest part of the day, just waiting for that to change... Again, good luck!

Definitely possible [2008-08-30]
While you won't be bringing in the fat paychecks in the beginning (because you will be researching everything just to make sure you have it right), it is definitely possible to reach that level of income. I graduated from Andrews and was making closer to $30,000 my first year. Just keep yourself focused, typing, and researching those first few months after getting your first job, and the rest will fall into place. Researching smaller companies, who usually pay better than larger nationals, also will help you reach your financial goals. Best of luck! You won't go wrong enrolling in M-TEC.

Really possible? [2008-08-18]
I am not an MT (yet) but before I make the final step enrolling in M-Tec I wanted to ask a serious, point blank question. Can a new person, after completing M-Tecs course, make 20k a year at any point after getting a job (while working no more than 40 a week as well). Is this an at all reasonable expectation? I am looking long term career choice if I commit to the training but I have heard from working MT's in my state that they were working 80+ hours for about $500.00. If this is the reality then I will have to consider another option and that would be OK, just not optimal. I THANK you for any help you can give.

MDI-MD... [2008-08-12]
Check out MDI-MD out of Baltimore, Maryland. I have been with them since April of this year after leaving Medquist and very happy with them so far. Part-time is 700 lines a day or full-time at 1200 lines (but can do more - you tell them how many lines you want) and you have a 24-hour period to complete your work, no set schedule. Love it!

Been there...done that [2008-07-24]
Please don't beat yourself up. I've been exactly where you are and it's not a hard place to end up. I could have written your post. I lived in my PJs and sometimes wore them for days, no make-up, and the same issues with even basic daily hygiene, i.e. showers. The best advice I can give you is what worked for me and that is to GET OUT OF THE HOUSE! I had to put MTing on the back burner and actually took a job close to home as a waitress! Believe it or not, it did wonders for my self-esteem. Most people would consider serving the public a degrading position or demotion from what I had done before. I needed the structure, a time-clock, and just basic interaction with other human beings. After close to a year, I am back at home working once again as an MT. Public service can be difficult, but it was just the boost I needed to get my mojo back and appreciate the fact that I'm in a field that allows me to work at home. Believe it or not, I miss the people so much, I'm considering going back to waitressing a few nights a week. I actually even made more waitressing than being an MT! Give it a shot. Waitressing may not be your first choice, but I would definitely advise finding any type of job that will get you out of the house. It will give you a reason to fix yourself up and dig the make-up bag back out. Please feel free to email me if you'd like to talk. Good luck to you!

Truthful advice [2008-07-23]
I just recently got married and I am working in-house at our local hospital. I LOVE getting out of the house and going to work every day. I love what I do and want to stick with it. We will probably not be having children for at least a couple of years as my husband has a year left in college to get his business degree. I want to be able to stay home and raise my children, but I have seen what it has done to my mom. She sits at home all day in her PJs and type, type, types. I am just wonderng if any of you have any regrets about deciding to do transcription full time from home in order to be there for your children? This may sound a little selfish, but I donsometime to think about it, but it has been a topic that I have really been thinking about lately. What I would really like to do is stay at home with them until they are all in school and then try to get a job out of the house while they are at school. Have any of you made this transition? Any advice would be appreciated. I would just like a heads up before making any decisions. Thanks!

I totally agree... [2008-07-22]
This is what I would do: In the morning either before or after your sleep time, go ahead and get a shower and get dressed even if that is in sweats or comfortable clothes. Wear these same clothes to cook dinner and into your shift. I think the problem is that you're working 3rd shift and I think that is the cause of the PJ situation. I read a book that my 8-year-old wrote around Motherpajamas. I had not really looked at it that way, but I guess she does see me in lounge clothes moreso than everyday clothes. I also work full-time at home, but not third shift. You may also want to consider getting involved in something even if it is a painting class or something you like to do. I know this costs money, but your sanity will be saved in the long run. I am fortunate enough to have gotten involved with some of the parents from my kids Even though it is not over and beyond socializing, it is something, i.e., coffee for an hour on a weekday. It is very, very easy to get homebound in this profession. I cringe at the thought of going out on a Friday night with all of the traffic. I am only 37, this is not right. So, I am also letting you know that you are not alone. Hang in there, and like the other poster says get a haircut. Plan a dinner out if possible with your teens and make it a point to step outside a few times during the evening just to gulp some fresh air. I water the flowers. Is there something that needs done outside that you could do this? Hugs to you...

LET MYSELF GO [2008-07-22]
First, I I have 2 teenage kids. I And then, I sleep most of the day, in my PJs of course. By the time I get up, it's time to make dinner and I might go outside with my teenage kids, but most of the time, I clean the house - and, why should I get dressed for that? Well, most of you can guess what has happened....I All I do is wear PJs. I I haven I My hair has grown out and there is no shape to it. Sometimes, I can My checks are direct deposit, so no need to go to the bank. Really, the only thing I do is go to the grocery store - and sometimes I don I am on anti-depressants - and I do believe there is an element of depression/stress going on here. How do I start getting myself back from this?

A little fun and help with a name... [2008-05-21]
Hello everyone. Well my husband decided to purchase a racehorse and then they decided that they would use this horse to breed. She has finally delivered her first (I don't know the sex) but we need to come up with a name to register this baby and hopefully next year start training for racing. The mom's name is Snows White Diamond The dad's name is Shark Streets Partners We wanted to incorporate our son's name in some way which is.. Trevor Banks So far we have: T Banks Diamond Partner and Banks Street of Diamonds. We have to turn in three names in case one that we put in has already been taken. Thanks !!!!

1-month-old schedule [2008-05-21]
Hiya. I have 8-year-old twin boys and an almost 1-month old girl. It has been a long time since the boys were on a napping schedule, so I was wondering if someone could refresh my memory as to when a nursing newborn can be set up on somewhat of a sleep-at-night, nap-by-day schedule and what a typical schedule might be. I went back to work one week after she was born, but am finding it really difficult to work consistently and get enough sleep for myself (homeschool the boys, one with special needs) with the baby up about every four hours. My boss is very patient anddoes not mind lesser line counts at this point, since I came back after only one week (despite emergency c-section), but I really want my line counts and paycheck back to normalas soon aspossible! Thank you!

May I suggest as well [2008-05-01]
that you seek marriage counseling, AND fast. My 10 year marriage ended in 2006 because of the same situation, EXCEPT I was working full-time at home with 2 children a home as well and still was expected and told to do EVERYTHING...... Good Luck!!

Here is what I would do... [2008-04-09]
Since you don I went to my local library and got the list of girls who had taken the babysitter course, which included CPR. They are mostly in 7th -9th grades. It is the perfect job for them, and you are home and available if there is an emergency. I have used my list several times, and have had much luck with it. It is an easy solutionversus hiring a nanny, who youin the fall, etc. Good luck!!

don't lose your sense of self... [2008-03-30]
Wow, I totally feel for you! Have you thought about writing him a letter - maybe something like what you just wrote to all of us.. maybe on paper he will see it a little clearer... and if not, honey I would STOP doing ALL of it! Marriage is a PARTNERSHIP remember and by the way, it's not 1950 anymore. It takes two to keep things going and him providing the source of income, although huge and I'm sure you are greatful - is not the only thing that defines a man as a husband or a dad for that matter. My husband and I both work, we both contribute financially, and actually, I made more then him last year - that said, us women/moms will always do more then them, my husband does help and he does share in most of the duties... he has too. In our early years together I once had to tell him that I wasn't his maid, cook or sex slave and that that if I was going to feel alone in our relationship, well, then ALONE is what I would be and his ass would be gone. Needless to say, he heard me loud and clear and while we work very hard everyday to keep our marriage strong, it is work on both of our parts. Your husband has to help more... he has to realize that the longer this goes on, the more you end up resenting him! and truly is this they way you want your children to see you for the next 20 years? Get out of the house, role pennies to get the $20 bucks to get into the local moms club... do it for yourself, it sounds like you need it! Keep you chin up and fight your hardest to get through to him!

omigosh [2008-03-26]
my two-year-old absolutely needs a nap in the early afternoon every day or else she's a total MONSTER if she gets her nap before 4pm she's good to go until bedtime at 9pm, and even though she calls out to us a few times as she's getting sleepy, once she's out she sleeps until 8am or later. my newborn is getting there, once i put her down after my toddler is in bed, she'll stay out til about 7am, so i get up and nurse her, then my other one comes in and begs for Barney... so i'm up anyway

3-4 naps!!!! [2008-02-04]
How do you do it??? My 30-month-old is trying to cut out his one and only nap and the 1-year-old is down to one nap most days as well. But they are pretty long naps 2-3 hours. Thanks for feelin my pain. I was just venting cause when you are use to finally being able to sleep a full night and they turn so quickly like that it really makes you feel like a walking zombie. Can't remember how I did the every 2 hour wake up when his was 1st born. Jenn

Did not work for my 2-year-old... [2008-01-31]
He just gets himself all worked up and throws up all night long if we are not careful. We have gone through a few nights with no blankets as they were either being washed or waiting to be washed. our 1-year-old hasn't done this yet, but he doesn't have the tummy issues the older one has.

have to agree with Mom of many [2008-01-31]
I Believe me, I If a child gets away with it once they My 4-year-old used to get up around 3 a.m. and try to come into my bed but I just tuck him right back into his bed. He used to fuss and cry but he knows now that it won't work and his early morning awakenings are becoming less and less, down to once a week now. As parents we just have to be consistent right from the start and don't give in, even when we're exhausted and frustrated.
