so what would your response be? [2008-04-01]
would you just tell him, if you dont like how i clean as i clean everything around you, you can do it yourself? i guess i am not a witty person and am at a loss for the dialogue i need to get him to stop...
I've dealt with 3, but the best/worst of them... [2008-11-16]
...was my neighbor just about 2 years ago. She must have thought I enjoyed having that just rolled outta bed look every morning running my kids off to school and rushing back home for work, the lack of sleep from working 2 jobs and barely leaving the house; ya know, all the PERKS of working at home.
Such a glamorous life of leisure I lead making 100K+ a year transcribing inside my mansion with maids and servants cooking and cleaning for me during the day, taking moonlit cruises on my 100 foot yacht every night. Oh yes, look out for me being featured on Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous and Better Homes & Gardens as I'm just rolling in dough here and have got it made with this life of leisure. NOT.
After explaining what an MT is/does, she gave the standard OHHHH! response. She must have absorbed very little from our chat: Typing, paycheck, work at home. She was convinced this was an easy way to make money from home and if I could do it, then she certainly could excel at it.
So, disregarding my advice, she took a $700 terminology course at the community college. She bought a Vera Pyle book, foot pedal and headset and was ready to work from home.
She even had a job waiting for her after completing the terminology course. The job was being handed to her at 7.5 cpl from her friendthe largest MT company. It was also this same woman advising her she ONLY needed a terminology course. Shame on her!
I tried to warn my neighbor, guide her, offer my help to get her started properly, help her through a file if needed, but she never took me up on any of it.
My neighbor it really wasn't even a day, I would say it was more like 30 minutes.
She heard 1 actual dictation and ran away from the computer. When I asked her how it was going with MT, she told me what happened and gave several excuses: She decided she couldn't sit here all day just typing. She couldn't understand anything the doctor was saying. She didn't have time for it any longer. Her excuses just went on and on.
I really felt badly for her seeing as she chose to believe the wrong person's information regarding this field and also the fact that she gave up so easily after spending all that money. For weeks afterwards I would ask her if she was going to try it again or further her MT education to at least have a better chance of succeeding.
She now had a better understanding that MT is an actual job and it involves a lot more than just owning a computer and simply typing. Her answer to this day remains no way.
When I that too gets the OHHHH! response, but it also sends them a message my job is not easy without having to explain more.
Wow. [2008-09-20]
I'm finding out that it is a LOT more work than I thought it would be. I commend you on making it work! We're coming to some realizations and making some changes starting Monday morning. I am thankful for some guidance from a veteran homeschooling mom and from encouragement of others. Thanks for the response!
Don't work for them... [2008-04-11]
but was offered a position, accepted the position, did not hear back for a couple days, emailed them again, and got a response that the position was filled.
Thanks for nothing.
looking for insight [2008-01-24]
About a year ago, I received a whopping quarter of a cent increase and was basically told not to ask for another rate increase for at least a year unless my production increased to well above the 800 lines per day that my contract states that I'll do. That's been impossible to do because of the lack of work on their system for the last 3-4 months. I guess I struggle with the fact that I really have no MT credentials, just on the job training, but I'm told I do great work. I'm also hampered by the fact that the owner of the company is somewhat of a personal friend. I want to look into other options, but because I'm still relatively new to the field, I don't even know where to begin. Thanks for your response!
income? [2007-11-06]
If you want to email me in response to this, please do so. I have 2 kids home during the day, and my 5-year-old comes home at 2:50 in the afternoon. I try to type during naps and when they go to bedat night. I started out in-house a few years ago and was doing quite well. Ibut I still can Starting next week, I Am I dreaming? Do those of you with small kids at home actually make a living at this?
Thank you s/m [2007-08-31]
I think my son will be fine watching a movie for an hour or so in the morning while his sister is havinga nap. I will have to make him a snack/lunch and make sure that he knows how to put on the movie himself. LOL
Thank you for your response.
I am glad to hear that there are others out there that are working while their children are at home.
Cyber Schooling? [2007-08-15]
Do you have cyber schooling available in your area? I live in Pennsylvania, and it is what I will do if I cannot afford the current school where my kids go.
Cyber-schooling is done over the computer. There are licensed teachers who instruct your child(ren) remotely. The best part is that the $$$ comes from the public school district where you currently reside, it follows the student.
I don't know if you have this option, but it would be a good compromise in response to your husband's concerns. You do need to be present with your student, but you are not doing the teacher, the cyber-school teachers are.
True, the site is for transcription in general. [2007-04-27]
In response to Deb No, the site is not geared toward Medical specifically. However, I believe anyoneinterested in transcription in general will benefit from the site.
sorry [2007-02-12]
OMG I'm getting aggravated. I just typed this long response and it didn't seem to work.
I wanted to apologize for asking the same question that has been posted below. I wanted to add a few things.
I went to aamt.org and clicked on all the school's website, but it's hard to tell what's what. My original thought was to go with Career Step but now after reading other posts, I'm not so sure. med Tec seems like it would take forever. I'm only going to be able to train in the evenings after work (with a 4 month old and little help) and on the weekends (when DH is home), so I need something that I can actually get done. Price is an issue to a degree, but I'd pay more to get a good program that will allow me to work from home immediately.
I also wondered what y'all thought about an associate degree from Kaplan Univ. online. I already have an Associate in GS and an LVN cert. I don't want to waste time on a degree I don't need.
I also found an employer willing to train. Is that a good idea? If I quit working for them, would I be able to find work elsewhere as an MT?
Thanks again so much for any help!
I tried emailing you this, but it wouldn't go through. Please sm [2006-10-13]
Thank you for your reply. I appreciate it. I didn't take offense. I wasn't really clear about my schedule and I know I sounded harsh, but I was having a very, very bad day. In essence, I was venting. Not all days are like today. I am actually homeschooling too, believe it or not, so I am really overdoing it right now. I give my 4 year old a lot of attention, though. I really do. We do one-on-one dates and every Monday we spend 4 hours together at a local rec center doing homeschooling stuff. I don't work too much on Fridays, so we will go somewhere fun and then of course I have weekends with them too. I've just been under a lot of stress.
Again, thanks for your response. My kids are spoiled...My husband and I love them so much, are very affectionate, but I'm pretty short tempered which I have to work on. Thanks again, steph!
