We have a 10-week-old boxer now... [2008-08-29]
have had a lab/mix in the past...
Remember too well [2008-08-27]
We live in Mississippi now but lived in Florida a very long time, from Miami to Jacksonville and the panhandle. We did sit through a few 1-2 level hurricanes but were fortunate only a few days without power. After Katrina, so many of our friends and family were severely affected from New Orleans to Gulfport. We sat here in MS without power for over a week but lost nothing in it. We did have neighbors and friends that had their homes leveled by huge falling trees and three years later before one got their insurance to cover properly for them to rebuild. We were 200 miles inland with a lot of severe wind damage, so I am sitting on pins and needles knowing another one is heading in this general area and so many friends and family along the coastal areas.
Lets just all pray for everyone's safety.
One of the worst punishments I remember [2008-08-26]
when we bickered as kids: We had to kiss each other. How about for every time he shows violence, kicks or hits or punches or slaps, he has to do something for that sibling he has assaulted? Make their bed, fix their lunch, do their chores, be their butler type thing. For the rest of the day.
I still remember.... [2008-08-24]
....leaving cookies and carrots on a plate, for Santa and the reindeer.
I must have been around 11 years old or so, and that Christmas morning, I found a beautiful, handwritten note from my mother. I don't have the note any longer, nor do I remember exactly what she wrote.
But she explained in a loving, wonderful way, the meaning of Christmas, including Jesus, and Santa. I recall the meaning of the note, letting me know that it is the gift of giving, within us all, to give and receive, gifts in His name, and that Santa was the vehicle of that giving, for us, as small children.
I donreal. Because her note made me realize that the whole season was bigger and brighter, than just Santa, gifts, and tinsel.
And I realize that Santa IS real, just like God and Jesus are real. If we believe, in that small child way, the reasons for believing, will always be with us.
I touch myself -- can't remember who signs it! [2008-08-13]
We just got WII fit this past week [2008-08-11]
I)
We bought this WII for my son last Christmas and I can honestly say it was money well spent. They have a blast with it and they aren't constantly sitting. We don't have the Guitar Hero but maybe that will be next on the list.
You have to remember [2008-08-07]
It is very easy to take email and board postings out of context. I don't think that is quite what she meant. Sheesh.
My sister opened my eyes the other week and simply stated SM [2008-07-30]
thatmost of the people pulling this country down have children, sometimes lots of them. These kids have no guidance and only know what they see. Unfortunately, a lot of them grow up like mom and dad, thinking they don Thank God for school teachers who are there to provide guidance and structure for a lot of these kids. Sometimes it is the only place they find it.
Thanks for sharing that, I'm seeing it this week with sm [2008-07-21]
my mom, sisters, and sister-in-law. I can>
I pay mine $5 a week, they do a varietuy of things - sm [2008-07-21]
from helping me clean the house (vacuum and mop and pick up/put away), clean bathroom sinks, clean cat litter box, get paper towels, let dogs in/out, clean rooms, and basically anything I can think of that I think they will do an okay job of. I have 2 girls 8 and 9. I do let them buy on credit sometimes but they know they are not getting anything else until they pay off the first debt. .
My daughter gets $10 a week [2008-07-21]
She watches her younger sister while I work, and she loads and reloads the dishes and is supposed to keep her room clean. On Saturdays she'll help me by doing various cleaning chores.
Stay put and remember why you downsized to start with. sm [2008-07-04]
The economy is only going to get worse and so many are facing foreclosures now. I would not give up the house you have for a new larger, more expensive one with only one income, no savings, and the economy in the shape it is in. Learn to save and put some money back and when you can afford to put at least 10% down on the bigger, more expensive house, then start looking. Make it a goal to at least put 10% of every check into savings off the top before the bills and before the wife sees it. No money there is no money spent. I have had to learn to do this recently as I was living like you all are and my kids were draining every penny I got. Now, I move it to savings off the top and learned to say, I as technically I am but I am stock piling it into savings because I may not even be employed tomorrow. No one knows what tomorrow will hold.
and remember this [2008-07-02]
don't go crying the blues to anyone here when your insurance premiums and medical bills are totally out of control. It is awards like the one this person wants that make insurance unaffordable for countless Americans. any monies awarded in courts will be coming out of your pocket if you currently pay insurance premiums. Yes, I feel for the child, but money won't fix it. This costs everyone, not just the dog's owner. and it solves nothing. she still has not answered the question of what injuries the child sustained, either. to see financial renumeration above the costs of any bills incurred is unfair to EVERYONE.
I remember Mexico sending aide when Katrina hit [2008-06-22]
It really surprised me, and I was very touched by it. I remember thinking at that time, all these countries we've helped and the only place that sends help our way is poor ol' Mexico.
I'm on vacation this week, so ... [2008-06-13]
brought some movies along to catch up on. I watched 27 Dresses, which was just okay. I loved PS I Love You. Also been watching The Office with my sister and DS, and Emergency!, which aren It Almost hate going back to work on Monday!
For anyone who has received a stimulus check by mail, have you all gotten a letter about a week [2008-06-03]

We got our check last week. We electronically filed our taxes [2008-05-12]
and check was a direct deposit. This will help us with our home improvements.
The good old days Remember? [2008-05-09]
I don But I have to get things off my chest. I am remembering the good old days of being an MT. I am even remembering the 1980s although those good times led to our recession now. But anyway, remember when you could make 1K a week at MTing, with job security and benefits? A boss who valued you like gold, because he/she knew you had special skills? When customer service was not just to the client but to each other employer to employee and visa versa.
I am hanging onto the mustang I bought in 2004 by a thread. It is practically brand new with low miles, because I can It has 1 flat tire and 1 spare because I can And I pay 504 a month for it. Think I can afford that anymore, when my lines don't count spaces anymore, or when the health insurance costs take up most of my checks? I am not complaining. I thank heavens I get to work at home and don't have to pay for clothes, gas, and day care.
But remember the days of big incentives that were reachable? 14K lines and you were a star? 12K lines a week was an embarrassment and now 12K lines a payperiod and you are amazing.. Remember eating steak? At a restaurant? Cruises. Being able to go shopping and not having to give an account to DH of every item spent? Having clothes for your kids as they grow out of them that did not come from good will?
Please share the good old days here. Even if it is when you typed with tri colored carbon paper and white out, but your boss said thank you every day, and the doctor was not so nasty. Then, the less great days as time when by 2K when computers were upgraded and no more cherry picking because you were now using Transnet. THose were STILL good days because they paid training and downtime.
Enough of me. How about the good old days from you? And it does not have to be about MTing, could be about anything. The days when Metros existed and you could get 45 MPH. Or days when Bazooka gum was a penny. Things like that. Looking forward to your response and BTW: TGIF, even to those who work the weekend!
1K a week? wow, no wonder you remember with such sm [2008-05-09]
nostalgia! I started MT in 1984 at 4.25/hr; minimum wage. I NEVER heard of anyone making those kind of bucks!
Once I remember I had a two-week SM [2008-05-09]
check of almost $1,800.00 which included a good bonus. I was pretty fast in those days and had a lot of normals I used to pull up. I did not work full time, but about 5-6 hours a day, sometimes a litte more, I used to work some hours on Saturday mornings if my account was behind.
If I couldn't make 1K a week, I would not be in MT. [2008-05-09]

I remember my dad embarrassing me on the field (sm) [2008-05-06]
This was a different era, I played in the late 70s and early 80s... and there was a lot of drinking in the stands! We lived very close to the ballpark and my dad would walk to my game with a cocktail. I didn But I will never ever forget my dad running right onto the field and yelling and pushing the umpire. He embarrassed me many times. And yes the other kids noticed and it was brought up at school. And guess what? I played in high school and college and even in a semi-pro league and once I was in control of getting my own self to games I never even gave him a schedule because I I Please just enjoy the game for what it is.. a time in your child
I bought a new car a week ago... [2008-05-04]
If anyone cares. A brand new Kia Spectra. I got a great deal on it. They gave me a $2000 rebate so that meant no down payment. And they took off an additional $500 for applying for it on the internet. I love the car and it gets around 35 mpg. So that is my good news!
Yes, I posted in regards to this last week. sm [2008-04-28]
My post, however, got deleted. I did receive an email from administration saying it was fixed and it did appear fixed for a day or two, but is now back again. VERY FRUSTRATING!@
I'm trying to remember [2008-04-26]
but I do remember waking up feeling completely flushed hot on the inside, a pool of sweat in the middle of my chest, my heart pounding, thinking I would like to rip my clothes off and jump into the tub filled with ice. Stuff like that. They're quite nasty little episodes. Did you have one? Are you over 45?
I'm not really wasting time during the hours [2008-09-05]
that I am awake - it If I could sleep 4 hours a night, I could:
- always have the laundry caught up.
- always have my house clean.
- cook supper each and every night.
- keep my flowers weeded and watered.
- read at least a half an hour a day.
- spend time in devotions and meditation and prayer.
- exercise.
If I could accomplish these things throughout the week, then I could have each and every weekend FREE!I feel like I could gain my life back if I could somehow figure out this sleep thing.
Thanks everybody for your input.
It depends on the day. [2008-09-05]
School mornings are crazy so its usually a granola bar, pop tart, piece of fruit or something of the like and then maybe a mid morning bowl of cereal, oatmeal, or cream of wheat.
On weekends my hubs is usually the one up early so he usually makes a traditional-type breakfast with eggs, hashbrowns, bacon, etc. or pancakes, french toast, or waffles.
During the summer I went through a homemade egg mcmuffin sandwich phase. Those were quick and easy but not quick enough for school mornings.
Funny, we had breakfast for dinner last night. Scrambled eggs with cheese, hash browns, toast, bacon, and OJ. It's been a long time since I have done that and I told my hubs this should be a once a week dinner. Its so simple, easy, and healthier than a lot of other stuff. Besides kids love it! :)
Just this morning I was thinking I need some new ideas for quick mornings but i hate buying prepackaged stuff like poptarts.
Does anyone know what happened to the [2008-09-05]
wonderful guy on America They brought back the acts from last week and announced who was going on to the next round, but he was not there this week and they did not mentionhim. I wonder if he dropped out? He was just wonderful.
thoughts?... [2008-09-04]
The only thing I think when I see anything about this story ~ and I haven I hope I
I remember following the Susan Smith case when those sweet boys first disappeared and I thought in my heart of hearts that they would be okay. I guess that sort of jaded me for everything that has come along since. The Elizabeth Smart case certainly turned out better than I expected, though.
Nope, I don't watch the news. [2008-09-04]
I find that its all bad stuff or things that are blown out of proportion. If its something important I can read it in the paper every other week or so, or I will hear about it from friends.
Kitty ringworm? [2008-09-04]
I need some advice from all the cat experts out there. A week ago a very nice black male kitty adopted us and since he was so mellow and got along with our dog, we decided to keep him. I took him to the vet for the first time last night to get checked out and get shots. The doctor noticed an area between his shoulder blades that was a little flaky and a little fur was starting to come off. She thought it might possibly be ringworm but couldn't tell yet. Honestly, I didn't even notice this (and I've been petting kitty a lot) until she pointed it out, and it really didn't start flaking until we got to the vet. Today in the same area he has a very small patch of hair loss and still has some flaking but I don't see a lesion like ringworm. Could it be that the lesion just hasn't shown up yet? If it is ringworm, what can I use on it without having to go back to the vet? I already spent a lot of money there yesterday and I do want to take care of kitty, but we do have limited funds. Oh yes, and to my surprise, this kitty who has been outdoors for who knows how long is very clean and actually does not have fleas! And yes, we did try to find his owner, but no one has called.
Any advice is appreciated! Thanks!
My thoughts [2008-09-04]
It literally makes me ill to think of what has happened to her and that there is actually a human being on this planet that would do such a thing. I do believe she is guilty. I don't think many people have any doubt about that. Just trying to understand why someone would harm her and what was going through their minds at the exact time they were doing this. I can't understand it. I remember years ago that Susan Smith (think that's her name) some other poster mentioned her, but I remember when that happened I thought if parents can't handle having kids don't they know how many people would love to have kids. I thought if you can't take having kids anymore then please bring them to a shelter so they will be safe and other families who cannot have children (like me) would be able to adopt these. I don't get why people don't do that.
We read and hear on the TV all these very strange things happened. Seeing as I type all day DH reads news and stuff and tells me bout these cases. Some young guy was driving down the road pulled over took his infant son out of the car and either beat him or just killed him. Someone saw this and the guy was saying something about the kid being posessed by satan. Another case some guy through his child off a bridge, some lady drowned her five children, and the latest DH told me about was some guy who was let out of some psychiatric hospital (I think), but went on a killing rampage. Walked into a store and shot a bunch of people, went somewhere else and shot some people, killed a P.O. and others. To bring it back to the story of Casey Anthony and what her mother has done (or not done maybe), but with all the very weird things going on does anyone have any idea why these things are happening. I sit here as a regular person wondering what is happening in the country. I've lived in other countries and sure they have crimes but not like here (as many or as horrendous). Is something going on that we don't know about. I read about the chem trails and wonder what in the world is in the poison that they are pouring on is. Is this what is making some people to absolutely lose their minds. What is wrong with our society.
sleep, or lack thereof [2008-09-04]
Iread somewhere this past week that Sarah Palin only requires 3 to 4 hours of sleep a night. I remember in the past reading the same about Jay Leno. For along time now I have thought about how much more I could accomplish if I could justget by on less sleep. I seem to functionwell with7 hours and usually that is what I get.
Do you think that the ability to sleep 3 to 4 hours a night and actually function normally and enjoy life is a gift that a person is born with, or do you think it is something that can be learned?Do you thinka person could get 1/2 hour less sleep per night every week, gradually getting used to less and less sleep, and still function well?Am I the only one who thinks about these things?
Please share your thoughts on this. Do you know anybody who sleeps so few hours, and what is their quality of life?
Ideas for Low Energy [2008-09-04]
hi, just wanted to offer some encouragement, if possible, to say hang in there and we all feel like that sometimes. I think it i know that when i started having perimenopausal symptoms, i wasn another option is an herbal infusion made of stinging nettle: http://www.susunweed.com/Article_Energy_Stamina.htm
having energy is a very multifaceted issue, imho, which takes into account one i give myself comfort foods, and yes, coffee.i do an email here and there in between notes or in the middle of one for a very quick break (case in point). if i'm low energy for too long, i ask myself why that might be, which it sounds like you're doing. sounds like you're overworked and worried too, which doesn't help. trying to find ways to reduce stress is key. sometimes for me it's a glass of wine, or watching my favorite show once a week for a treat. whatever is FUN for you is key.
again, just my humble opinion, but itgratitude list on occasion, or a gripe list, whatever feels right at the time!
Good luck!
How the heck [2008-09-03]
Call me dumb but I have to ask before I try this. You put the dandruff shampoo on your face? and is this a 3-step process, rinsing between, or you put it all on together? How often do you do this once a week, a month?
LOL....no....sm [2008-09-03]
I use the dandruff shampoo on my hair, because I feel like my hair oil contributed to the acne. The facial scrub I do in the shower every day, then when I get out and dry off I use the peroxide - if my face has been breaking out. It usually ends up being once or twice a week that I use the peroxide. How did I come up with it? You try having your face break out from the time you are 15 and still dealing with it when you are 40 - you'll come up with some crazy ideas too :-)
So maybe it wasn't [2008-09-03]
LOL Glad I asked. Something about putting dandruff shampoo on the face didn't seem right.
I am almost 30 and have had it since about 14. I took accutane and had great skin for about 10 years, now its slowly creeping. I'm preggers so not sure if its the hormones contributing or not but I don't want to take accutane again. I have tried proactive and just about everything out there and nothing helped except the accutane. I'll give this a shot. I have seen the Apricot Scrub in wal-mart but have never tried it.
Oh, if you have one or two problem spots that you want to get rid of quickly, Clean and Clear Persa Gel works great. If I know I have a special event coming up I will use that daily for the week or 2 prior and it helps a lot. It clears up any problem within 2 days but within the first day the redness is completely gone.
A "Lunch Ladies" opinion [2008-09-03]
I work in an elementary school in Ohio. With a lot of hard work we have pretty much removed junk food from our menus. Just today we served Chef Salads for one of our choices. The kids love them. As one first grader said My mouth is watering just looking at my salad!. We have a lot of freash fruit and vegetables too. Please let your school system know your concerns. There really is no reason to serve sodas and they should be removed. I do serve ice cream, but once or twice a week. We laugh sometimes when they call us their Lunch Teachers. When I ask why, they usually say because I teach them how to eat right. As far as the grandmother who brought home food from the kitchen, I hate to tell you but that is stealing!
we were a charity...LOL!! [2008-09-03]
it was end of the week stuff like milk, juice, etc. she only brought home the good stuff at the end of the summer. getting those groceries really helped my parents sometimes!
Exactly. [2008-09-03]
Overall the school lunches in this district are great. The elementary school would offer ice cream or popcorn for 25 cents once a week. Always fresh fruits, vegs with the meal. Itype A (regular) or type B (ala carte crap) lunches and there is no control other than for the parents to discuss their expectations with the student. I'm thinking we may go to packing lunch except for once a week or something. We are going to give a trial this week and see what he says he buys and then address it. I'm hoping he surprises us but I'm sure its just a matter of time before he joins the rest of the crowd.
I don't really think those are that unhealthy... [2008-09-03]
they have to give options. They don't have to eat them all. Have to say I don't like the main courses, but as for the rest of the menu, those choices are fine. You have to remember, kids need more carbs than adults do.
Forgot to add that they have Chik-Fil-A delivered sm [2008-09-03]
once a week which all the kids love.
What is your opinion of this? [2008-09-02]
The scenario is...a husband and wife who are limited financially. The husband is between jobs but gets a small unemployment payment each week. The wife works every day. They are driving somewhere and stop to get gas in their car and she asks him how much he is going to put in. He says ten dollars. She hands him $20 and tells him not to just get $10, but to go ahead and put more in, then she thinks about it and hands him $10 more and says just go ahead and get $40, and maybe it will last us through the week.
He goes to the pump and pumps in $30!! Because she was looking at the gas pump to see if he was about finished and ready to go, she sees that he only pumped in $30. When he gets in the car, he doesn't say anything to her about the amount he got, and as he starts to leave the station he notices that she is angry! He realizes why and starts to tell her that he decided to keep the $10 to put gas in HIS car at home a little bit later.
She feels like he cheated her in some way by taking the 30 and using it, but saving his own 10 (no matter what the reason) because when they originally pulled up to the gas station, he was planning to use the 10 he had and nothing more, yet after she voluntarily offered him the 30, he didn't use his 10 at all, and didn't even tell her that he was going to do it that way.
This has caused a really big fight between them that she says is rocking their marriage. They are at the point of not speaking to each other over this!
What is your opinion about this story?
btw, this isn it's a lady I talk to on another forum
(some back ground information on him...he is notorious for getting 5 and 10 dollars worth of gas at a time, and having to keep stopping for gas many times because that much just doesna few dollars worth! She gets really upset with him for doing it this way and says that he should take the total amount that he will be getting in small increments and put that whole amount in at once. She says it will go further)
I see your points and agree that there [2008-09-02]
is definitely more going on here. It There are so many other factors involved. As you said, is he just a deadbeat? Or is he out of work for the first time and is having a hard time dealing with it. Maybe he kept the $10 because he didn Does the wife handle the finances and does she dole out the money as she sees fit? If so, then I don Or is he constantly out of work, can't hold a job, wants the money for drinking or cards, etc?
Either way, the amount seems very trivial to end a marriage over. I, too, think there is more going on here and maybe this is just the straw that broke the camel's back.
Need advice again - Dementia (sm) [2008-09-02]
Hi all. I just want to start off by saying that whenever I post on here I always get kind responses, and I may not always get a chance to say thank you. Wanted to let you know that I do appreciate it.
Here is my latest challenge. I have an uncle who is in his early 70 I grew up watching my grandmother, his mother, go through the stages of this horrid disease. I have a pretty good grasp of what we are up against. Thing is, I was a child when my grandmother started her decline, and boy things are different when you are an adult. I honestly don
Here is what complicates the situation. My uncle is divorced, has been for some time. He has no children. He has three sisters, my aunts, living. One is in her 80s, one is two hours away and not in great health, and the third is 12 hours away. The oldest cannot help, given her age, the one that is two hours away has told me that she really doesn
It gets a little more complicated. My uncle is a hoarder. He also has been notoriously bad about managing his finances for many years. His house is in a very bad state of disrepair. He is at the stage where he really needs someone to look over him, not live with him but maybe go in once or twice a week and help him with bills, meds, etc. However, his house is so bad that I truly fear it is going to fall down around him.
My questions: I know that he needs help, but I also know that he has to ask for that help (up to a certain point, which would be where we would then go to court and ask for a conservatorship). He is not at that stage yet. If something happens to him, no one has legal medical proxy, he does not have a will, he does not have an advanced directive. We have talked to him about the importance of doing this, but he does not want to listen, even though he admits he needs to do something. He also has not been formally diagnosed. I think he is afraid to get confirmation that he is suffering from the same disease as his mother. How do we help him? What should we do? What is the procedure here? I honestly am at my wit I donand have him thinking that we are wanting anything. I don It is his. But something has to be done. I want him to be taken care of when the time comes.
Any advice would be appreciated, as always. Thank you.

Many many years ago... [2008-09-02]
When the x-files was still fairly new, around the 2nd season or so, one of those news shows (hardcopy or something to that effect) had a story on him and his obsession with sex. There was even an ex-girlfriend talking about how WONDERFUL he was in the sack, etc. and how all he had in his apartment was just a mattress on the floor with candles all around because he just worships the female body, blah blah. It
Can you be more specific about [2008-09-02]
your vision? Not too bad uncorrected isn't your typical LASIK candidate. If you don't go to one of the best LASIK surgeons, you might not get optimal results. I went to one of the two best-trained and most experienced LASIK surgeons in my city, and my results were great. But it cost over $4000. There was a lot of testing to qualify. Your lens has to be thick enough that there is room to slice some off, and they will check more things about your eyes than you've ever heard of, things that are very specific to LASIK candidates. Since I have astimagmatism, I opted for a more refined procedure - Wavefront or something. My vision is 20/20 and I'm glad I did it, but it was a very freaky procedure that was so unsettling I was up all night, despite the so-called Valium they gave me. My vision was worse than 20/400. I think another way to say it was 3.75? Or was it 2.75? I can't remember. But I couldn't make out the top E on the eye chart.
KEY FACTOR HERE THOUGH . . . [2008-09-02]
is the financial situation they are in where EVERY PENNY COUNTS. We have to remember they are in a very scary financial situation and women like to have that financial security.
Talk about HOT! [2008-09-01]
Man is he hot! Whatbutt art. Like finger painting but with the other end. HA HA HA.
Anyone now a days in Hollywood that will come out and admit they have a problem and get help for them I commend them, unlike policians who hide it. :-)
I just saw him on David Letterman last week. He is still looking great with all the gray. Still as hot as when he first came on the movie scene.
No, I don't think I'm a Queen (SM) [2008-09-01]
I donand my daughter knows this. I did look into a traditional moving company and it was over $1200. I I in fact, helped her get into her house. I suppose I did hope she would remember these things, explain to Bruce, and theywouldbe sympathic tomy predicament. Thanks for your reply.
