Some people never leave the high school mentality. Donvideo games, as long as theyare age-appropriate. They help build hand-eye coordination. I think there was even astory about surgeons playing them because of how much remote-assisted surgeries arebeing done now.As far as board games here, we just got the game of Life and have been playing it lately -- the kids absolutely love it! They also love Uno, Monopoly, and SkipBo. I told them the best thing about these games is that we can play them even if the lights go out (this was during hurricane season).

No, I think I stated that wrong [2008-10-28]
They, for some reason, think we voted for GW (which we didn't). They mainly believe we voted for GW because we lived in the same city as their wacked out relatives who did vote for GW, so they just assumed that because we lived in the same city we voted the same. We voted independent but because they voted for AG and then JK, they think they have higher intelligence than us. Even when we told them we didn't vote for GW. It didn't matter because we didn't vote for who they voted for they consider us the lesser.

No, nothing personal. They can ask for female or male. [2008-10-22]

People assume way too much. Did I say anything about the OP taking the picture? No...I just complimented the picture and offered my support.

Wrong. And why do you think a same-sex marriage [2008-10-16]
a heterosexual one? The ceremony is exactly the same... we're not talking voodoo and witch-doctors, here. Unlike too many other parts of this country, SF is more tolerant and forward-thinking. I know that's a scary concept in some places, but homophobia, violence and hatred towards people who appear 'different' is a scary concept out here. I love SF's diversity, color, vibrance and tolerance. That's why even though it's ridiculously expensive to live here, especially for an MT, I just couldn't stomach living anywhere else.

No, you are wrong. There are millions [2008-10-16]
upon millions who are against it, but not afraid of it. Homophobia is the wrong word.

Nothing wrong with believing in man/woman-only marriage, [2008-10-16]
By getting married, same-sex couples aren't 'forcing' anything on anyone. Nor are they hurting or threatening anyone. They're just trying to practice their own religious beliefs. If they're not religious, then they get a civil union, or don't get married at all. Exactly the same as the rest of us. It's just NOT any big deal.

I'm afraid we are giving the wrong view of Christianity sm [2008-10-16]
Christians believe that every person on Earth is a sinner, and for our sins to be forgiven, we believe that Jesus was and is God's son and that we can pray to God and tell him that we believe Jesus died for our sins. There is plenty of evidence to be found to show that Jesus was not just some nice guy or prophet who died on a cross. Believe me, I looked into it when I had doubts. As for adherence to religious dogma, if you study the teachings of Jesus himself, you will see that he was against those who clung too tightly to their religious beliefs, the Pharisees, who thought they were better than others. Jesus did not hang around ultra-religious pious people, but instead hung around those who were hated in their community, and caused quite a bit of gossip because of it. He stopped the stoning of a woman who was caught having unmarried sex with someone else's husband and said let he who is without sin cast the first stone. No one threw a stone. That is how it is supposed to be.

I just think you lead them there first, and let them learn for themselves what is right or wrong (sm [2008-10-16]

I am saying that as a Christian, part of our job is to show others the true meaning of your religion and to hopefully encourage others to investigate and decide to become a Christian, not to just point our finger at others. I think you are exactly right that there is a lot of evil in the world.

You're very wrong. The Bible is very much up for [2008-10-16]

How do you handle being jealous of stepkids? [2008-10-09]
Big problem, girls!I have a stepdaughter that I am so jealous of I cannot see straight most of the time when she is here. The child is 9 years old and has her daddy so wrapped up that when she is here I am just pushed aside completely. He does not see it, thinks I am just overreacting and is even to the point of starting to take her and spend his visitation time somewhere else and not bring her around me. I do not begrudge her getting her daddy If they are watching a movie, he loves on her and holds her while I am pushed over to the recliner by myself, when its time to go to bed, I go to bed alone while he sleeps with her and if I want him in the bed with me, I have to wait until she goes to sleep and then go wake him up and ask him to come to bed with me. We cannot close our door when she is here because she will get upset and start banging on it and crying and he will run right out to her (even if we are in the middle of a conversation), we cannot sit together on the bed and watch TV even if she is in her room by herself because as soon as she knows he is in the room with me she starts hollering for him and he runs to her and then proceeds to crawl up in her bed and watch TV with her.If they are going somewhere it is usually just the two of them and I am not invited because they need to spend some time together. Granted, he does not get her on a regular basis (his fault, not mine) and he wants her to know that he loves her, but why can He wants me to love her and spend time with her and do things with her (especially when there isa football game on he wants to watch, or somewhere he wants to run with the guys for a little while), but then he makes it where I don She calls me She, not my name; she does not acknowledge me when she comes in the door until he forces her to speak to me; after our living together since she was 4 years old she gets very upset and says that I am not her daddyfriend and she tells everybody that. I feel like he enforces that idea when he pushes me aside and he says I am just being ridiculous and selfish by wanting him to spend more time with me when she is here. I don't even ask him to forego time with her, I just want him to make some time for me (maybe give her a bedtime and have grownup time with me after she is asleep even?). Am I just ridiculous as he says, or am I right in feeling the way I do? Help, please...

I love my hubs with all my heart. I would never re-marry and I know we would stay close friends and probably be neighbors if possible. He's been married before so I know how nasty divorces can get and hateful people who once loved can be towards each other BUT I can understand what you mean by truely love and cannot imagine your life without them. At the same token I look at cheating as a deliberate lie and never a mistake...yeah, in many aspects of life I am a plain and simple harda$$. There are just some things that are unexcusable in my book and this is one. I feel like morally the decision would be made for me. Despite love and feelings, he put my life in danger (STDs, a freak that goes psycho, etc. - you never know) and I won't put up with it for a second. JMO. I respect yours and would of any friends of ours who made the same.

Wicked stepmother?? [2008-12-02]
You just did this girl a huge favor by making her take responsibility for herself. I am not much older than she is, but I have been taking responsibility for decades...what is wrong with her, other than she seems totally incapable of managing her own life, can't make a decent adult choice to save her fanny and she has someone to constantly bale her out? I am GLAD you cut her off! I am proud of you for doing it too, it took guts. By helping her at every turn you simply encourage and enable her behavior. BRAVO!

Children who whine at you because [2008-12-02]
you bought the wrong brand of something...you know, chips, bread, butter, milk, TP, toothpaste, jeans, shoes, etc. One-up that: Kids who tell you they want such-and-such for dinner. You make it for them. They tell you it tastes funny. OMG I could go on forever because I have 2 of these and what I would like to do about it would probably be considered child abuse in my state. :p

I had my own store. Got a following almost became [2008-12-02]
But the fees added up so much that is listing fees, final value fees, that I made about 33% after paypal took their fees too. Then, I shipped all over the world too so I'd be sure to make sure the shipping costs were right or I would get burned there. Then, there became the people who would want their money back even if the listing said only store credit. Customer is always right. So, by the time you count the money I spent on the item to begin with (usually something I thought I would naturally make money on), the fees, the time spent taking pictures, the digital battery, etc. I had a gigantic loss this year. Plus, if you buy on e bay, you should watch your selling, because you just might spend all your profit, which comes out to about 5 to 10 bucks an hour. I loved doing it, don't get me wrong. I met people from all over the world. I sold a dress to the Prime Minister of a University in England, and other interesting people. I still have friends on there who are sellers too. But, I had to close down shop because the fees just got to be too much for me. I would rather sit and type and have free time doing artistic things and having hobbies. Some of my friends who have a following on e bay and have been selling for years range in the 25K a year range, and they have a business license, and charge state tax. Don't forget as well, you have to pay income tax just like any other IC job. Just was not worth it to me. Good luck to you.

About the coming change to all... [2008-11-30]
If there's anyone left on the planet (well, maybe it's just this country) who doesn't know this, and isn't sick and tired of hearing about it, seeing TV spots about it, etc. It's been going on for what, almost a year? It started before Feb 2008 because some got the idea THAT was when it was going to change, but it was 2009- over a year away. I haven Thinking it was some big news story, I read it, and I don't know if it's been saying this all along but, along with saying you won't get (or might NOT get) good or any TV when it changes, unless you get a converter box, it also says YOU CAN USE A VCR OR DVD (as a convertor)! Not a lot of people don't have a VCR or DVD player and if not, you can get a cheap one for $39.99 or so. So, you can hook up your antenna to the VCR or DVD player and that converts it to the digital the TV needs, and you also get the VCR and DVD player (if you don't already have one)? So, why haven't they said this before? Or, if they have it wasn't stressed. People can get coupons to buy a converter box, more wires and things to hook up, when they can use their VCR or DVD player (or buy a cheap one and watch tapes or DVDs or record, etc. on them, too)? Maybe I have this wrong, but I know it said you either MIGHT need a convertor box, OR a VCR or DVD player to get the digital signal (just not with your TV and anntenna) Just thought I'd pass this on, in case anyone who uses an antenna still hasn't gotten a converter box but might have a VCR or DVD player (or would rather buy one, instead)

Likening a spouse to a dog or horse... [2008-11-30]
imagine if a male doc suggested treating a wife like that; the outrage would be heard round the world. Maybe acting like adults and having a conversation like a married couple would help. How demeaning to treat a husband that way. Where do you women find these men that you have to train? Gesh, I always thought my DH was fabulous...now I am CERTAIN he is!

I bought a convetion oven a year ago and it puked out this past week when I wanted to broil a london broil.I was very disappointed. Up until then, I used to make cakes and wholeBBQ chickens on the rotisseie which all were great, plus the baking/roasting things. I'm hoping I just did something wrong when but I'm afraid I might not have. I also have his SS pots and pans bought a year before that that are still sitting in the box because I found anoter set of pots and pans that were given as a Christma giflt, so I'm using them. i will be making chicekn again this week rotiserries style so keep your finers crossed for me. Of course, the warranty ran out prior this happening.

I told her we could make it a $5 dollar challenge for everyone like a game, but no it has to be a regular present, just at her budget. The real truth is that last year I went to the fanciest store in the mall and bought her daughter a set of coffee cups she wanted. She was so jealous and mortified that I was making her look bad to her kid. She did not know they were on sale for $2 a set. She thought I was showing off. I thought was buying a present that was requested!

We got our tree today [2008-11-29]
We went to a tree farm, took a tractor ride and cut down our tree. We have 12 foot high ceilings and usually get a 12 foot tree, but this year we put it at the other end of the family room, and we got an 8-1/2 footer. We used to have a fake Christmas tree up until about 8 years ago or so when our cat began eating all the fake pine needles. Long story short she ate so many she had to have emergency surgery to remove them (she wasnt' able to pass them) and $1,500 later we decided no more fake trees. She's no longer with us, but when she was younger she would climb in the tree and actually knocked it over one year. We had to anchor it to the wall. Our other cat never really bothered the tree except batting around ornaments at the bottom. He's been over sniffing it today, but hasn't paid much attention to it over the past few years.

6 pumpkin pies, 2 vinegar pies and a chocolate chiffon pie sm [2008-11-27]
So now that I have caught your attention...just what is a vinegar pie, you ask. In the south, they are referred to as transparent pie. You will sometimes hear it called sweet and sour pie. It is good real cider vinegar, the kind with the mother at the bottom, brown sugar, white sugar, butter and eggs, a bit of flour. It is like water when you put in the shell. You bake it for an hour and it comes out about like the goo in a pecan pie with no nuts. It is not sour a bit, nor is it sickly sweet. It is sweet with a bit of an apple bite. The kids love it and when younger son is home for the holidays, he will devour one of them at a sitting. He literally comes in and sees the vinegar pie, takes one and says: So...what is everyone else having? The other son won't eat pumpkin or vinegar, so he has the chocolate chiffon. The rest of us are pumpkin eaters.

I already had two rescue cats, when the neighborhood stray came in through the cat door two years ago. He was so sick with pneumonia, limp and lifeless. I nursed him back to help and swiftly had him neutered. Of the three, he is by far the most grateful, any food, any attention, any place to sleep. When you have more love to give, what's the harm in just one more???

Take a sewing class, and take the machine - sm [2008-11-26]
with you. There you will learn how to use it and how to sew too. I have been sewing since I took home-ec in 7th grade. I have a Singer that is about 20 years old or more. It is a pretty basic one with about 12 different stitch types. Have never had an issue. Sounds like you donhow to sew class. Call a local craft store and see what they offer. Even one private lesson would probably do you a world of good. Good luck.

Hanging around your house (as long as [2008-11-26]
you are home) I do not see as a problem. My daughter is 14 and really the only place I let her go with a gruop is on church outings where I know they are supervised. She does have a male friend that hangs out here (same age) at times, but I am always around. As for hanging out at a pizza place, there are probably older kids there and I would be a little leery of that.

I trust my daughter but not her friends [2008-11-26]
I think my daughter knows right from wrong and would not do anything inappropriate, but I worry about the boys. They seem to be able to do a lot more than what I allow my daughter to do... some of them are older and also they have very bad manners IMO. I wish she would find someone else to hang out with. It seems like that harder I try to change her behavior, the harder she pulls in the other direction. Are all teenaged girls like that? I guess I was too at that age, but it still worries me.

Yes. When my daughter was 13, most [2008-11-26]
of her friends were guys. Girls at that age can be quite nasty and jealous, so she wouldprefer guys over girls. She used to play Playstation a lot with guys. She is 19 now and still hangs outwith the guys. Most of the guys are her boyfriend They still play Playstation, go to McDonalds, and go to the movies. I always kept an eye on where they were though which was usually in the front yard too or in the living room. I wouldn Guys drive like nuts anyway. Now she drives with them but she is an adult now. She does most of the driving too. They all pile in her truck. I learned by her hanging out with guys at an early age as friends, it made it easier for her to communicate with men when she grew up. She understands men more because of growing up with them as boys. Maybe ask your daughter why she feels more comfortable with the guys than girls. Maybe there are girls giving her problems that she doesnone of the guys. It is a hard age though. Their feelings can get hurt very easily at that age. Good-luck.

That's so ridiculously childish. [2008-11-25]
First you come here asking for opinions when what you really want is to be told you are right and he's wrong, and now you are pulling this little stunt? Pleeeeze grow up woman.

STOP IT [2008-11-25]
quit putting yourself down - Your child will never hate you - your husband will not hate you - You have done nothing wrong.. SOME people today do put too much emphasis on material things -but you know as well as I do that material things are not that important. . Your heart is what is important. . Love your child and husband and continue being the good person you are - Do you think those people are better than you because they have a lot of land? No - they may have more money but they are no better - and from the way they treat other people - it sounds like they are not as good as you. . And the gifts you gave the child were fine - people would be a lot better off playing board games with their kids than letting them play video games all the time.

I think you hit the nail on the head. [2008-11-25]
I have also had a few more days to think about what the other posters said too. Whether I want to admit it or not, hormones do make the moment seem worse and make me want to snap into all or nothing. You have some great ideas. I agree that she didn't need to get me a gift if she wasn't coming to the shower, and probably would have preferred that rather than get me a gift of the wrong gender. At any rate, I will send her a nice thank you and call her to see how her wedding went since I was not able to be there for the big day. I will also make mention to her that evening before I leave that I would still like to see her, if even for a few minutes. It's a male/female shower at a sports bar so if nothing else I would like to get to know her husband better. I don't want this to ruin the small bit of friendship we still have left or my shower but she was honestly the only person I was really looking forward to being at my shower. but I must get over that and be greatful that we are still friends in some way.

Calling all you animal lovers - live and let live or intervene? - sm [2008-11-25]
I have a dilemma. I am an animal lover and have something I cannot come to a conclusion about. At a restaurant where I eat lunch every Friday with a friend of mine, I have noticed a young male kitty hanging around outside looking for food. This past week he ran up to my friend and rubbed her legs and quietly meowed. I purposely did not try to pet him because I knew I would get attached and ignored him. Well, ever since then I find myself thinking about him and wanting to rescue him. Meanwhile, I already have 4 inside cats (2 rescues, 2 Maine Coons) and hubby really does not want another cat in the house because a few years ago I promised we would never have more than 4 (had up to 5 at one point previously). I actually have a huge screened deck he could stay on indefinitely because I do not believe in letting cats run loose for their own safety. I could provide plenty of food, a warm place to sleep, and veterinary care. At some point I would even probably work him into our household, but I just cannot do it at the moment. Just not sure I would be doing right by that kitty because I am sure he would be upset and confused for a good while as to where he was and what was going on, but is that better than being hungry and cold? I know there are lots of animal lovers out there. What does everyone think??

You definitely have the right idea [2008-11-25]
As long as it's done in moderation I don't see anything wrong with it. It definitely sounds like you have a system that works for you and your family. I guess I'm lucky in that I have daughters, the youngest one is pretty young for video systems, although she does have an educational V-Smile system, and the older one (14) has a Play Station 2 that got old really fast as she got older (we've had it for quite a few years). Now she's into all the girly stuff and has never wanted any of the other systems. We almost got a Wii this Christmas for the whole family but decided against it because of the cost. Our friends have one and it really looks like a lot of fun.

Yes. My son's second wife never [2008-11-25]
cooked. It was always McD's, Taco Bell, Pizza, etc. She never cleaned either. All she knew how to do was spend the bill money. (She didn't work, BTW). Now my grandson is on a diet at 15 yo, 195 pounds.Thank heavens, my son woke up and got rid of her. My mom worked every day and when she came home, made supper and it was always on the table by 5-5:30. If my father was on the 2nd shift, she'd make him a hot meal, put it in a square metal container and I would bicycle it to his work. When I was old enough to use the stove, I would make supper once or twice a night. In the summer, I would clean the house so she would have less to do. I worked 2 jobs most of my life, but always had time to take my boys to their baseball practice, wrestling practice, and when old enough, to their PT joband pick them up at 10-11:00 when they would get off, went to open house every year to see how they were doing, etc. I also made sure their homework was done (not that boys really bring homework home in those days LOL), had a meal on the table for them every night, never had snacks like chips or pretzels in the house. The only thing they had to drink was water or milk. No soda. BTW, my husband during this time was away from home all week, so it was all left to me. The parents today are too pressured, as are the kids. Kids are not allowed to be kids anymore. They are 7 going on 70. I think it's time they get back to being normal kids. They need breathing room. I don't know who ever decided that the kids had to be in every sport, every club, every volunteer activity the school has, but it's crazy. Not all kids fit that mold and they shouldn't have to. Plus their grades are expected to be A's and B's, nothing less. Perfection is the norm and no one is perfect. What's wrong with this picture? I'll jump down from my soapbox now.

I would definitely rescue him if you like...sm [2008-11-25]
him. He would be much better off on your screened porch than out homeless. At least he would have a place to sleep and food. He would also have vet care and someone who gave him attention.
