Any other Maroon 5 fans out there? [2008-11-05]
I took my 16 year old daughter to their concert this summer and came away a bigger fan than she is! Their music talks to me in a way no other has since the 60s (would you believe I Now I devour everything I can get my hands on about them. Great, great band!

I was blown away by the little Filipino girl (sorry have not learned their names yet) and also the 2 after her, 10 thru 12. They actually saved the best for last I thought. Once again this year feel the girls are better singers, for the most part, than the guys. I do not care for the nurse/rocker girl at all and also on the male side the Peter Frampton look alike guy. Nancy Drew [2008-01-28]
My daughter is 9 and in 4th grade and loves the Nancy Drew books. She got into them after seeing the movie from last year starring the teen Emma Roberts (she had a show on the Nickelodeon channel). The movie I thought was really cute and old-fashioned. She really likes the mystery genre at this point. I personally never was into Nancy Drew but liked my mom's old Trixie Belden mystery books which were similar.

I know I read them when I was around 10 or 11, but that was 30 years ago and I am not sure what girls read these days. I am trying to find someone who would really appreciate them because I believe my mom buying me my first one truly led to a love of reading that continues today (true crime no less!). I may just donate them to our local library. Any other ideas?

How about some ideas for a warm supper? [2008-10-28]
No snow yet, but howling winds and cold with a little bit of drizzle. Need some ideas to warm my little guys up when they get home from school. Not big fans of soup, though. Any other ideas?
I did this 8 years ago [2008-10-23]
When my husband and I got together we had 6 kids between the two of us. His brothers and sisters either had none, or just one. They were used to drawing names, we told them we could not participate (actually my idea but he backed me up)because of what it meant cost wise to us (no matter how young you drew a name).
My husband always had dinner at his house so we continued that but told everyone if they wanted to exchange gifts they would need to do it before they came for dinner.
The idea went over like a box of rocks then, but they adapted and now, 8 years later when all of them have at least 4 kids (and his brother 6 LOL) the mention of drawing names sends them in to meltdown.
Christmas is not supposed to be about the gifts anyway. If that is all their concerned about let them eat dinner somewhere else anyway!
STOP!!!! BETTER TAKE A CLOSER LOOK [2008-10-22]
This is what I found when researching this:
Just Wondering asked the question; Do the Heat Surge Fireless Flame heaters that the Amish sell really work?
It is being advertised in the local paper (The Herald-Dispatch,Huntingto n , WV ). That it is a Miracle Heater. Saves Money: uses less energy than a coffee maker. Stay really warm and slash your heating bill all at the same time. It uses 1500 watts. It is 5119 btu. My question is. Is this really a Miracle Heater? Should I buy one for every room in my house and turn off the heat pump?

The ads (which are all over the country) are very misleading.
1. A coffee maker uses a large amount of electricity for about a minute. Itmiracle heater uses less electricity than a coffee maker DURING THAT ONE MINUTE. But you're going to have the heater running for a lot longer than one minute a day. So it's going to cost you a lot more to operate than a coffee maker does.
The heater will cost you around 12 cents per hour to operate. The average cost of electricity in the U.S. is 8 cents per 1,000 watts per hour, so 1,500 watts costs 12 cents per hour on average. This is true for ANY 1,500 watt electric heater.
2. The ads say that the heater produces an amazing 5,119 BTU (a measure of heat energy), but ALL 1,500 watt electric heaters produce 5,119 BTU. If an electric heater was 100% efficient, it would convert 1,500 watts of electricity into 5,120 BTU of heat. All electric heaters are nearly 100% efficient, and this has been true for decades. The miracle heater is no more efficient than any other electric heater.
3. The website of the heaterzone heating. See the Saves Money section of the website (www.heatsurge.com).
This is true, but it's also true for ANY electric heater. The problem is that a lot of people don't like to have just one room of their house warm while all the others are cold.
You DON'T want to heat your entire house by putting an electric heater in each room. That would cost you far more than central heat. Gas central heat, for example, would cost around half as much as having an electric heater in each room. (The exact amount varies depending on what part of the country you live in.)
If you want to get one heater and move it around with you, that would be cheaper than central heat, but you can get a lightweight 1,500 watt / 5,119 BTU electric heater with a fan for under $100 at your local hardware store, while the miracle heater costs $350 including shipping. The heater at your local hardware store won't have the Amish-made mantle and the fake flames, but it will work just as well. Make sure to get one with a fan, since it will warm up the room faster, although fans can be noisy.

be careful if you have environmental allergies [2008-10-21]
my son has severe environmental allergies and we were told to never hang out his laundry as pollen can attach itself to the clothing and make his symptoms worse. We were old-time Folger's fans until recently, and I told my husband to change the type of coffee we were buying. Folger's tasted different, almost a bitter taste. I too used bottled water, and we changed our coffee pot too. It didn't work, so I am glad to know it was not just my taste buds that were off. It also smelled different.

Just a thought....... [2008-08-27]
We lived in an area where tree frogs and lizards were a daily thing, all over the place. Our dog loved it though. They usually plant themselves in areas where there are more abundant insects. Is there a light nearby? That will draw the insects as well. Put in a buglight which will cut down greatly on the bugs attracted and hopefully cut down on the lizards and frogs as well. But the tree frogs hung out all over our sliding patio door regardless. Of course, my husband and I are big fans of both, because once you start seeing them diminish overall, that's a bad statement for their environment, so we were pretty tolerant anyway. I do understand the falling on your head though. Just shake your door good before going outside! Good luck!
What a story this has been. I pray this child is still alive. I SM [2008-07-22]

I get it oh so well!!!!!!....... [2008-05-28]
My mother didnYou still on that computer, you don....and, Did I just knock you off the computer when I called? Well, if she thinks she would knock me off the computer, then why call anyway? She knows I am available if there is an emergency, but she doesnstuff, things my brother and I would never thought of having. I never asked for any money because all I heard was I don't have it. We would have just liked to have her acknowledge our presence. She made an effort to give my brother swimming lessons, boy scouts, etc., but never and I mean NEVER signed me up for anything. I had plenty of friends from the neighborhood and I played sports since I was small and this was because many of my girlfriend's older brothers paid my softball registration, etc., to allow me to play for their church teams. I am grateful to them to this day. My mother never and I mean NEVER came to one thing I ever did. Not one game, not one thing at school, nothing, and that is NO exaggeration.
Living away, I just let things slide when she called. I would sit and let her talk for hours just to get things off her chest but I drew the line when she forgot who she was talking to one day and said about my niece, ******** feels more like a daughter than ****(insert my name here), then she nearly choked when remembered it was her daughter she was talking to. Who the *** does she think spent all the time taking care of her business, listening to her whine for hooouuurs about this and that, and taking care of things for my brother that really wasn't my place, but I did. I haven't felt the same since.
She would rather my niece and nephew do everything for her now that they are grown... her golden children. Of course, they should feel like her children more than my brother and myself....she certainly spent time with them like she should have spent with us but didn't. I came home one year and she didn't have time to be with her other grandchildren (my children), she had to attend my niece's softball game...and she went to all of her practices. That just blew me away!!! She would sit on the bleachers and constantly complain how wrong they were treating her baby....they didn't pitch the ball right for her, didn't give her an opportunity, blah, blah, blah.
I just canYaShe. No, she's tired of you telling her at age 29 what she needs to do and how to do it. Her and her husband go out of town nearly every weekend all over the place, taking vacations here and there. I have several pets and guess what? I had to feed them right along with my children, all the time still having to work. Big deal!!!
She never once inquired how I was feeling during my pregnancies. Too busy playing mom to my brotherI bought it for (niece) but she is just sooo small and petite, so I thought you might be able to wear it but you. My daughter was never fat, so that hurt terribly. My nephew has mooched off her and is now 27 years old and she constantly gives him money for his debt he gets himself into, even with his great paying job.
ItWell, (niece) said I could probably do it without all that. Well, my niece couldn't even do this job, but it's always good to know how little they think of me. My two children are college graduates and when they look at some of the stuff I do, they cringe at the thought. My daughter is a teacher and says she would rather teach those unruly kids all day than have to deal with my work.
So, itmother thing. Some people just don't realize that all mothers do not really mother....but as they age, they suddenly think you should be available now that they have nothing else to do. You're right, it really is frustrating. My husband said a long time ago I should just not pick up the phone because I feel physically ill when I see that number come up on my phone. Such hateful comments and snide remarks. I can't feel happy living here and have wanted to move since we moved back here, but my children are grown and work here now, so I would like to be around for my grandbabies.
Oh well......anyway, I do get it!!
My husband recycles (scraps). sm [2008-05-22]
My husband recycles/scraps and makes good money at it. If you have a scrap yard near by, your kids may want to check it out. You have to be 18 to get into the yards so you would have to go with them. This is more than picking up bottles along the road. He picks up things like TVs, vacuum cleaners, anything with a motor in it...ceiling fans, etc. You name it he has scrapped it. You have to break everything down into different components...copper with insulation, clean copper, cast iron, cast steel, aluminum etc. You have to take the freon out of A/C units and refrigerators. Scrap copper is $3 a pound here in Michigan.
I don't know where you live or what your kids have in mind, but it is a dirty job. I always tell my husband, where else can you get dirty and get paid for it. And my favorite part of his scrapping is watching the guy who runs the crane with the big magnet on it. I want that job when I grow up. LOL.
Good luck to your kids.
My MIL has been doing this since [2008-05-05]
before we were married. At first, I tried to ignore it. Then I asked my husband to handle it. Now after 13 years of marriage, if she pisses me off - she hears about it. I My MIL has dumped on me since day 1, even not showing up for our wedding. She has invited us to dinner only to serve it an hour beforehand because everyone else was already there. She has given Christmas cash $100 to my husband while giving me a $1 bottle of aloe from the Dollar Store (the sticker My FIL was no better (he He made comments that the race of my unborn child would not be ours because I was probably with someone else. When they came to visit our son for the first time, he said he was checking out all the guys on the way here so he I have never given them any reason to believe I would ever cheat on their son, but that My MIL even went so far as to urge my husband to have DNA testing done on our 3 children, which are undeniably his. Of course, my husband said he would never waste money like that. I can go on and on, but the bottom line is my MIL is a b*tch.
A few years ago, after she really hurt my husband and insulted my family, I picked up the phone and told her about it. She was upset and tried to act like she didn I told her she could say anything she wanted about me or even my family, but hurting my husband was where I drew the line. She Not fun to be around, but cooperative.
I say put her in her place now or she will continue with this.
Good Comeback for Smokers (from a nonsmoker)! [2008-04-04]
from Fox News Channel dailygut.com or see below.
He's funny! I never miss the show!
friday's gregalogue: smoking bans and death
So I was reading the Economist - ha, just kidding - I am barely literate. Actually someone read it to me, and told me how American smoking bans have led to the deaths of many innocent people. By preventing people from smoking comfortably in bars, more folks die in fatal accidents involving booze.
How so? Well, researchers think smokers are driving farther to places where smoking is allowed - like places with outdoor seating, or my intricate system of tunnels near the overpass. And all that somehow leads to more drunk driving, and death. To which I add: Phooey!
I read of a far more intriguing theory: that smoking bans make restaurants more attractive to nonsmoking shut-ins, smarmy geeks who can't handle their booze, much less conversation. Finally, they take off their drawstring sweatpants, shave their pimply backs -and hit the town, where they get drunk and kill people. See - it's the callous and unthinking nonsmokers who are to blame - those stupid, fat nonsmoking jerks.
Look, I've always hated the smoking ban. I think the health threats from passive smoking are fabricated - and books have been written on the faulty data behind the research. Plus, smoking on the street blows - as a worldwide celebrity it's hard to puff when you're constantly kissed and hugged by adoring fans.
It's all just a scam to legislate behavior that people don't like, and has nothing to do with science. Fact is, if you let smokers smoke -only smokers die. That's it. Everyone else is fine. Which is a shame, because I'd really like to take a few vegetarians with me.
And if you disagree with me, then you sir are worse than Hitler.
Very heartbreaking story [2008-04-02]
(CBS) Fifteen-year-old Alex Koehne died suddenly last year from what doctors thought was Meningitis.
He said, 'Mommy, am I going to die?', and I said, 'No baby, they're going to make you all better,' his mother, Lisa Koehne remembers.
His devastated parents took some solace in knowing that his death would give others new life. His mother says organ donation is very important to the family. Alex always knew what he wanted.
CBS News correspondent Nancy Cordes
Alex's liver went to a 52-year-old man. His pancreas to a 36-year-old woman. His kidneys went to two different men, one 46 and the other 64.
A month later, an autopsy revealed that Alex never had meningitis. He had a rare and fast-moving lymphoma cancer -- one that was now working its way through the bodies of four other people.
The organs were removed, but the lymphoma already had killed the recipients of his liver and pancreas. The two kidney patients had the kidneys removed and survived. They're now undergoing chemotherapy.
When we found out that they died, our hearts went out to them, Koehne says tearfully.
It’s a very, very rare event, says Dr. Lewis Teperman, director of transplantation at New York University Medical Center, where two of the four organs ended up.
He co-authored an article about the case in the American Journal of Transplantation to warn other doctors.
We Teperman says.
Alexallow the horrible circumstances surrounding this rare case to affect their decision to sign the donor registry, which every year gives 22,000 people a second chance at life.
Medical privacy rules may prevent the family from ever knowing the names of the people who died. Now, Alex's parents want to keep others from suffering a similar fate.
Love my tattoo! [2008-04-02]
I have a tattoo on the top of my right foot. It is the flowers from the months that DH, myself and 2 kids were born in. I picked the two most popular ones for each month off the internet, went to the library and found pics of the ones that I wanted then she drew them all up for me. They are all in purples and yellows for the colors. I love it and am trying to think of something else to get. I would like to get my other foot done as well as upper back/shoulder blade. Good luck to you!!!
Oregon man says he's pregnant [2008-03-27]

Beatie wrote the article, which includes a picture of him while he was 22 weeks pregnant. The article said he stopped getting the injections and was able to get pregnant. Beatie, who lives in Bend, wrote he was once pregnant with triplets, but the pregnancy was life-threatening and he lost the fetuses. Now, Beatie said he and his wife, Nancy, are expecting a little girl in July. In the article, Beatie described some of the challenges he and his wife have faced -- they said doctors wonsparks legal, political and social unknowns. Patrick Swayze has terminal cancer [2008-03-05]
http://www.ogpaper.com/news/news-01750.html
Patrick Swayze Cancer Diagnose: 5 weeks to liveSad news reports coming from Hollywood today, actor Patrick Swayze has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. According to a report first published by the National Enquirer, Dirty Dancing star Patrick Swayze has only 5 weeks to live, after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer back in January and the cancer had spread to other organs of his body. According to an insider, there is little hope left for Patrick Swayze, after the cancer failed to respond to the treatments. Pancreatic cancer is a malignant tumor within the pancreatic gland and each year over 30,000 individuals in the United States are diagnosed with this condition. The prognosis is generally regarded as poor, with only few still alive five years after diagnosis, while complete remission still extremely rare.
For the past month, Patrick, 55, has been traveling to Stanford University was published in the gossip magazine. The story has not been confirmed by Patrick Swayze or his representatives and fans of the actor could only hope that the cancer story is one of the false stories, which often find their way to ink.
I think it was a pun [2008-02-20]
and not to be taken literally about his last name spelling. It has to do with the totality of the man and where he is coming from. I question why everyone keeps talking about religion of the candidate. His religion does not bother me. It is the political leanings that his congregation seem to hold that worry me. I think that all the BO fans should carefully examine exactly what he has to offer and who he really is and decide if anything about him that is concrete and of value to us as a country. So far, I see nothing and am holding BO in contempt for not showing up to his current job and voting for his constituents who elected him. What if he represents us in a similar fashion if he becomes POTUS? I just think he is so busy being an icon and popular that he is shunning his duty. I don't hold that lightly. I also see where Hillary did not show up to vote either. We need a better way to run elections as it seems that candidates always shirk their duties when one is going on and there ought to be a law against it. I don't know if JM voted or not, but would not be surprised if he didn't. Why do we pay senators and representatives who don't do their jobs? Even more to the point, why did we elect them in the first place?

She's even obviously high in her videos, can't even lip sync it right. And I'm sure not many of the ones you named above have shot up heroin, smoked crack, and took ketamine (horse tranquilizers) and ectasy all at once! and then in that state gone on stage completely wasted, get booed and then make nasty comments to the fans. Before this turns into a full blown....sm [2008-02-05]
back and forth free for all, you also don't know me personally to make assumptions about my personality. This has gotten old quickly, so I'll leave with these thoughts.
You expressed an opinion saying you were ill about her treatment which you thought was above and beyond.
I expressed an opinion, in turn, basically saying if you were in her situation you would want that same protection, considering it's very plausible that it's the obsessive fans and need to know that probably put her in this situation.
Opinions are opinions, facts are facts, and considering all the information any of us knows come from cutthroat reporters who are looking to make that big story, it would be rare if anyone knew any true story about a celeb.
I know if I were famous and hounded by people 24/7, and having a mental breakdown to boot, you can bet your bippy I'd do whatever in my power to make sure I had nobody around who could violate my privacy any more than it had already been violated.
As for the doctors getting suspended, if they weren't on her case, and it's not a teaching hospital, and if she has security, then it's for a reason, and they should have known better than to violate her privacy. Doctors can violate HIPAA just as easily as anyone else, and that's what they were doing, because it's also very possible that those same docs who just wanted a quick peek, probably couldn't keep it to themselves, or they wouldn't have been nosing in her business in the first place. They got less than they deserved.
Walk a mile in her shoes. Have sympathy and compassion in your heart for those who need it, which she obviously does!
