it's about 2 miles from the beach [2008-08-29]
here on the West Coast of Michigan in Muskegon. Bought the house from a man who was a nut and who had bought it in foreclosure for 17K. Huge yard, 100 x 100 feet, all fenced. Two bedrooms, one bath, just over 800 square feet (pretty small). All new siding, all new triple-pane windows, new furnace, new fridge, new hot water heater, new stove (found the receipt, $1700 for the set), and a totally re-done kitchen. Itlittle house in the hood. Taxes are about $900 a year. The only repairs we needed to make were to the plumbing, of which there was none, and I mean none. So, my nephew and I spent just over $200 and learned how to plumb -- all connected and flowing, PVC is my new best friend. There I take my child to school of choice out of district, cuz I wanted him to go to school where I went; it Gotta love it, good enough for now.

Myrtle Beach [2008-08-29]
I have been to Myrtle Beach many times and I think it would be an awesome place to live. . Allyson is beautiful - she is lucky to have an aunt who is willing to consider making such a big change to be closer to her.

Tami Hoag is great for summer reading by the pool or at the beach! [2008-08-01]
A Thin Dark Line is an awesome murder mystery with some romance thrown in. A lot of her books are set in Louisiana down in the swamps or in Minnesota and all are really good mysteries with strong female characters and a little romance thrown in for good measure.

We're off to the beach and need some ideas! [2008-07-02]
I think I have most of my bases covered, but just wanted to see if anyone had any other ideas for the trip. We're off to Ocean City MD for the fireworks - woohoo! I have 3 boys, ages 10, 7 and 5. We figure it We have a DVD player for the kids and they each have a portable video game to take. I think I have the drive down pretty well covered, but if you have anything to add, feel free. At the Beach -- we borrowed boogie boards from a friend for each of them to try. I We also got some sand toys for building castles. Any other suggestions here? I'm afraid 1 or 2 won't like the boogie board thing and get bored very easily with the sand toys. We Anyone else know of anything at OC, MD that was really great for kids? Hubs and I have been there without the kids last summer, but really just enjoyed eating out and walking the boardwalk. I don We usually vacation at resort towns - like Disney and Dollywood - where there Just looking for suggestions!

Beach [2008-07-02]
Just keep a sharp eye on the children in the ocean with the boogie boards. The ocean current is strong. I found this out when we went to Myrtle Beach and my 10-year-old was on an inflatable raft. The current carried her rather far. It was a good thing my husband could swim. It happened so quickly but everything turned out all right.

Take the kids to Assateague Island, only a short way from Ocean City. There is a Beach for day use and they might see the wild ponies keeping cool by the ocean. Just spent last week there.

Odenton Maryland/Virginia Beach Va info needed. [2008-04-01]
Hey everyone. Hope you are all doing well. We are scheduled for a vacation here in the next few weeks (business trip for hubby that we are turning into a vacation), and are going to be in the Odenton, Maryland area and then the Virginia Beach area. If anyone is familiar with those areas, here is what I am curious about. - In Odenton - book stores, yarn shops, fabric shops, flea markets, etc. Obviously I have to do something to keep myself busy while he works for a couple of days, lol. - In VA Beach, a nice spot to picnic on the Beach/near the Beach that also has nearby access to a decent public restroom. I know, sounds strange, but I have a health condition....anyhow. Thanks in advance for info and advice. HC

Definitely Navarre Beach, FL [2008-01-19]
The most gorgeous, and well-kept secret in FL. It is in the pan handle, about 35 miles W of Destin, and about 25 miles E of Pensacola Beach. All of these Beaches are beautiful, white sands. Navarre is less traveled, and less busy. My husband and I went with my sis and fam last year, which is where he proposed to me, then this year on 07/07/07 we were married Beachside. It is wonderful. I just keyed in Navarre Beach search, and many offers for condos came up. We stayed at the Inn at Summer Wind, a wonderful high-risecondo equipped with everything, If laying around on the Beach and/or having coffee on your balcony overlooking the water is your cup o tea, this is the place for you! It is very relaxing. Then, you can cross the bridge back to mainland (Navarre is a small island), and go to the new Superwalmart, to specialty shops, or on down the road either way to frequent other Beaches/restaurants, and there is an outlet mall down near Destin that was cool. Just an awesome place to to. We went in June in 06 and July 07, and the water and weather were perfect. In fact, 07/07/07 was the most pretty day down there this year!!! Good luck deciding, but in my exp. It was well worth it. July is the on-season, and we paid around $1300 for 6 nights in the condo, that slept 6 (king BR, bunk beds made in the wall (hubbies bed if he don I think starting in midAug. or so it is about 1/2 that. I have to go in the summer, though, because of the kids and teacher hubby. Good luck again!!

South Beach here. [2008-01-07]
I started South Beach just today since the New Year fell in the middle of the week. My husband and I have done it before and it really works pretty much effortlessly. I am working two jobs from 8:00 - 1:30 (Real Estate) and my transcription job from 2:00 - 10:30, so this seems to be the only way to lose weight for me given the fact that I have no free time or energy to exercise. We did it before last spring and the weight loss is quick and pretty painless once you get over the initial carb withdrawal. I would love some support and could offer some as well. You can e-mail me directly at mandie573@yahoo.com. Thanks and good luck.

Corpus Christi Texas - 150 miles of beach... [2007-12-06]
sand is very hard though....LOL - and since I was there, I heard they built up that city. I was there in the 70s but I remember what a GREAT time we had (a bunch of us) and how laid back it was.....bring lots of sunscreen/block as it's subtropical sun there as is S. Florida.....and for west coast of Florida, Naples, Fort Myers, Sarasota, Tampa, Clearwater

How about beach-chair position? [2007-11-17]
Doncha know the patient wishes they were really in a chair on the Beach instead of in the operating room.

I really appreciate your words [2008-11-22]
You have no idea. I painted a dining table and someone we knew offered me $1000 for it but I could not give it up because that meant that we didnso, we will go get another one and you can do another one. But they never are the same. He offered to sell my headboard I painted. I have this huge 5 x 8 headboard I painted with a picture of a Beach scene and has palm trees for the posts. He wanted to sell that off too. I was a little heart broken, cause I made it for my bed, not someone else's. I am not sure how to get past that.

Considering my circumstances I am looking - sm [2008-11-11]
forward to the holidays. I'm the one with the mega debt who confessed to her DH a month ago, etc. We will have his debts paid off in full in about 10 days. I still have quite a mess though. We sold back 2 weeks of his vacation time (lucky for us his work allows you to do this) and half of that is paying for Christmas, the rest is being banked in our savings account which needs restoking (used to have $5K in it but only $200 now). We are taking a night and going to the Beach to see the lights (free hotel stay due to his travel points) and a nice dinner-- all of this is his idea too--, and he suggested I go up (with the kids of course) and spend New Years with my friends/family up in PA so I am surprised about that. He is going to try to come too for a day or two to have a late Christmas with my family as well. Things are all roses, but considering everything I am looking forward to seeing my dad and one of my brothers, the other is in England and his family is going there to spend Christmas with him in Ireland with his wife's family there. But DH is trying really hard, he even bought me a dozen roses on my birthday a couple days ago and a really nice card, I couldn't have been more surprised....normally I get nada, not even a card. Granted my daughter told him to get me flowers, but still, he went over the top. But I digress as usual....everyone just needs to stay within what they can afford, we are cutting back some of course, but I have a bit more wiggle room now that I have that vacation money coming. Do it every year and it is a lifesaver.

PS! Here's the playlist of a gift CD I burned - sm [2008-10-28]

Dysfunctional Family Christmas (comedy) 4. First Snow (Trans-Siberian Orchestra) 5. Christmas Wrapping (The Waitresses) 6. Ukranian Bell Carol 7. Mr. Grinch (How The Grinch Stole Christmas) 8. Well, half of it would pay off all [2008-09-29]
3 of my credit cards. My son is begging for a trip to the Beach so that would definitely happen and then the rest would go in the bank for emergencies.

camping [2008-09-19]
If camping sounds okay to you try going to floridacamping.com as they have the amenities you can choose from and an area map so you can see where you might like to stay. We just had a vacation to the Destin/Panama Beach area in June and it wasn There is a camping site in Panama Beach and I think it is called Campers Inn. They were across the street from the Beach, but had direct Beach access. Enjoy planning your trip!

I'm from Amelia Island, Florida (sm) [2008-09-19]
If camping is not your thing, you can look up vacation rentals in the area and get great deals on condos and/or hotels during that time. It is located just past the FL/GA line so very North Florida, about 1/2 an hour before Jacksonville. It is a small island, one of Florida's oldest cities, and an old pirate town. The streets are lit up at night downtown with lights in the trees and many of the streets are brick. (Can you tell I love it?) If you are looking for a Beach area with more entertainment, such as Ripley's museums, etc., a similar but somewhat busier Beach town is St. Augustine, FL. I will try to find the Website I usually use when looking for rentals and post that later in case you are interested. You can get some really good deals this time of year.

Thanks - I love it too - was born there sm [2008-09-19]
My parents moved to Jacksonville but I still go to Amelia Island/Fernandina Beach almost every year.

July [2008-09-19]
do not go tent camping in Myrtle Beach in July - been there, done that. .

condos versus hotel [2008-09-19]
Hi, the only tip I really have is check out the rates of the condos on the Beach for weekly rentals. I know they are probably high for summer time, but they offer full kitchens and more amenities than hotels usually... and you can save a lot of money by making your own meals instead of eating out all the time. The end of the summer we got a really good rate at Emerald Isle in North Carolina... I know that's far from you, I'm not sure if FL is as cheap... but you could look at Myrtle Beach too. Just think you're going to be paying probably at least 100.00 a night in a hotel... depending on how many nights you are staying you may just want to look into the condo idea, and if you need any help once you figure out where you want to go I'd be happy to i LOVE doing that kinda stuff :) have fun and good idea to start saving early

Need frugal tips [2008-09-18]
I love the fall but this is the time of year that I also get to thinking about summer vacation in order to start saving early. I want to take my 7-year-old son to the Beach. Does anyone have any ideas for a cheap but fun vacation. We would drive so I know packing to eat on the road would be one thing. What else? Is it cheaper to get a hotel or a condo? Eat out or go to the grocery store? ANY ideas would be greatly appreciated!! TY

how far? [2008-09-18]
How far from the Beach are you? you could camp. stay a block from the Beach to save money .. go to the grocery and fix your own meals. hotel is cheaper but check on tents/campgrounds.

We live in Arkansas so more than likely Florida or Gulf Shores? [2008-09-18]
Camping is a great idea! - When do you think it is too hot for camping at the Beach?

Florida Native [2008-09-18]
Hey! My dad used to take me to a campground that was right on the Beach. Of course as I go to write this the name of the place has slipped my mind, I'll have to find out and get back to you. But it wasn't that expensive at all (definitely cheaper than a hotel room or condo) and it was so much fun! There is a park right there and a dock to go fishing on and at night you can catch ghost crabs on the shore! Hope this is helpful! When I find the name of the place I'll let you know!

My daughter took all her friends' pictures [2008-09-11]
She has a 35-mm SLR film camera, nothing fancy. Her friends paid for the film, developing at a good camera store, and gas for her car. They brought different outfits and accessories and drove around town one day taking pictures in different locations. One of them used her camera and took her picture. They ended up being some of the best photos in the yearbook. Very different from all the rest of the posed pictures taken at the Beach. Didn't cost me anything, so I gave her the $65 for her yearbook.

Suggestions for moving across country? [2008-08-29]
So I am from California, my little sister has been in North Carolina where her husband is stationed at the Marine Corps for two years. They just had their first baby (the first extended family member) and I flew back there for the birth 08-18-08 8 pounds, 3 ounces 19 inches long And now that I The rest of my family is here on the west coast, but I My mom thinks it is because I am at the age of wanting babies, but I don Is this a crazy idea? I mean, most people are not able to take their work where they go, and I don I wouldn't live in Jacksonville, NC where they are, I was thinking more along the lines of Myrtle Beach SC... two hours away so they still have their privacy and I live somewhere where I think I would love (but have no idea really, I visited there one time)... I just don't know how you go about making plans to make such a huge move... Any thoughts, suggestions, advice? Obviously this is a quick assessment of my lifestyle, but I am willing to do it, but is it crazy to think i want to be around my niece enough that I would move 3,000 miles away from my home? Thanks for the input and i attached a pic cause i can't help showing her off! :) This is Allyson Ayn!

She is just beautiful and was born on my b-day [2008-08-29]
I have vacationed at Myrtle Beach many many times. I had a friend from high school move there a couple of years ago and she loves it there. Being a resort town you just have to deal with a lot of tourists certain times of the year and right after graduation look out for the teenagers. That is where I went right after graduation (and hey, I didn't end up in jail! LOL)

My heart goes out to ya'll down there - sm [2008-08-27]
We were stationed in Biloxi, MS, for several years, then moved up here to AL in 1999. We go back to Biloxi every 2 months to see my hairdresser, to eat, enjoy the Beach, look around, you name it. Westill feel very connected to the coast and its people. I cannot tell you how devastated we were by the destruction done by Katrina. We went through a cat 2 hurricane in 1998, which was bad enough to be without power for a week with 4 cats in a stuffy house, much less what you all endured after Katrina. Please, please, please make a plan to get to safety NOW while there is still time, just in case. My heart is in my throat every time a hurricane enters the Gulf now. Best wishes for your safety and that of your pets.

While I agree that...sm [2008-08-26]
some ADHD children have difficulty in school, not all do. There are some who are extremely high achievers academically. My son, in particular, is not. He has struggled in school his whole life. He usually does not feel remorse for what he has done unless he has caused significant injury and then he usually blames it on something or someone else never ever, ever taking responsibility. He swears uncontrollably and calls his sister and brother all kinds of filthy swear names. Not all ADHD children are built the same. What may be for one child, may not be for the other. I had a girlfriend whose son was ADHD. He was mouthy, disrespectful, impulsive, and incredibly difficult to handle. However, he didnHey, they made me mad so they deserved it. It is kind of like a double whammy for parents of these kids. First, they hit, punch, slap, punch walls, etc., and then when you try to punish them, they get even worse. I, too, have tried spanking and the only time it ever seems to work is when I come unglued at my seams, but not necessarily getting physical with him. Everywhere we go as a family or just me and the kids is a battle to end all battles. There is excruciating fighting (fist fighting sometimes) in the car so bad that sometimes they shake the car all over the street, at the malls, fist fights in Wal-Mart (always with him as the instigator), fist fights at grocery stores, fighting and loud swearing at the Beach or at someoneMom, love you. Like my husband, when he is good he is the best kid you would want to be around, but when he is bad look out. It is unlike anything you have seen before in any child ever created. Best of luck to you. You are certainly not alone.

This is wonderful. [2008-08-24]
I forget the man ironically enough you can charge it on your card to purchase! So, kind of funny there! I checked out the book at the library instead, figured out what to do, and still have not gotten around to it. I need to get it all down on paper, and I However, he does put his own gas in the car and treats us for different odds and ends, fast food, movie night, day at the Beach, you get the picture... The only problem I see with this is the way I get paid. I am an IC. I only have one online company that truly pays me on time. My other accounts I bill every other week but they don Also, the work fluctuates. So, I may make $1.400.00 a month with one account but if the docs go on vacation, that can bring it down to say $600.00 a month. So while your plan, I agree, is wonderful and yes it does work, and yes Ibudget wise income wise for me personally being an IC and having fluctuating work. I might add the online company I range anywhere from 14,000 to 20,000 lines a month given the work is there, I work from a pool; no line quotas, and no set schedule. So, I need to be on my toes to grab the work. I do have a lot of accounts to choose from, but when I go out twice a week to pick-up work, I am away from the computer, hence losing some of those jobs I could have grabbed. I check all day long until 11 p.m. to make sure I take all that I can. Sorry this is so long, but I think thatfloundering on this budget thing where I am never sure if Imy end of the budget every month. I don been doing it 20 years, and love it and love being at home with the kids (school age), but still...

Where did you get married? [2008-08-19]
A church, city hall, a park, on a Beach, on a sailboat, a private home, a cabin in the woods, other? Was it in the U.S. or a foreign country? I got married (eloped) in a chapel. It had 4 pews in it. Made in the U.S.A.

what is the worst song ever? [2008-08-13]
This was on our local news this morning. My first thought was Help me Rhonda by the Beach Boys. Seasons of the sun is right up there for me also. What's your 'worst song ever'?

You make me feel like a slacker... [2008-07-26]
IStop Dressing Your 6-year-old Like a Skank by Celia Riverbark. Very light and very funny. Perfect Beach book, if I were at the Beach, which I'm not unfortunately.

I keep mine in the laundry room also [2008-07-25]
I also have a fat kitty who LOVES to get in there and pretend he's at the Beach. I keep a tiny dustpan and broom in there and probably sweep 3 times a day. Sometimes there will be a huge pile of cat litter. Considering he's an indoor kitty and can't seem to find anything else to do, I just let him be and ask him if he had fun!
