Cedric's first trip to the dog park [2007-10-03]
We had no idea how Cedric would do at the dog park, but his play with Sasha in our own backyard has been quite boisterous, and I wanted him to try playing with younger dogs. We brought him in and all he wanted to do was smell the fragrances around the gate. He looked alarmed to see other dogs roaming around. We could not coax him away from the gate, and finally DH leashed him up and walked him all around the inside perimeter and ended up on the far side. At this point he started cautiously sniffing actual dogs, and before long he was willing to romp a little as long as it was just one dog at a time. He did a little running and was having a great time, even when just watching a big pack of dogs running. You could see how he was learning all about interacting with dogs and playing with balls. At the very end it occurred to him there were also people to meet, but it was getting dark and Sasha wanted to walk the park path, so we did that. Cedric liked that too, but at first when he saw the tennis players whacking stuff with rackets, it confused him. Then we got some food and gave the dogs their tiny bites, which is always a treat for them. When we got home, Cedric climbed all over DH to show his appreciation, and today he has been lying at his feet. Plus, he has a new appreciation for a tennis ball we have, and when he got up on the couch with me, he chewed on that instead of me. A very good activity for Cedric.

Sounds like Cedric is in a loving foster home! [2007-10-03]
Where do you live - that path looks gorgeous!

Welcome Cedric - Yipee [2007-09-19]
What a fun day... even the hard parts are fun when you have the love of a sweet puppy. (yeah they are all puppies..)..

Cedric is here! [2007-09-18]
When we drove up to the shelter 2 towns away from us, there were firetrucks there. All the workers were outside. They told us they were closed and my jaw dropped. Then they found out we were there from rescue to pick up the Siberian, and they rushed back in to get the paperwork. Cedric and Sasha checked each other out, and she allowed him to rest his nose on her shoulder without upset. Cedric rode well in the car, even though the worker who loaded him in said he was not a fan of crates and that I can it feels like a nice horse mouthing your hand! He was not disturbed by the vacuum cleaner, and he is making good friends with DH. Must go put some Frontline on the boy now. More news later.

I love him. What a character Cedric is already. My lab/dane mix is Walter - such a kick. Congrats! nm [2007-09-17]

Thanks for the encouraging word. [2007-10-17]
Sasha is at the oncologist right now, getting a dose of chemo for lymphoma. The biggest worry was that her calcium was up at 18, but they got it down where they could give her the chemo. Hopefully she will respond well. Cedric is so depressed about her being away that he wouldn't eat this morning. He got up on my bed and tried to wrestle with me.

Sasha is home from the oncologist. [2007-10-17]
She sure doesn't act sick. Her lymph nodes are already quite shrunken, which is good. DH has to look at all the different option plans and decide what he's willing to do. Naturally I'd do the optimal treatment that runs around $4500, but I'm not the big breadwinner. At least she is getting something and will feel better than she has. Cedric is happy she is home, and so am I. Vet said she was very good, even when she had all the vet students come through to take a look at her huge tonsils.

I've had a terrible time with [2007-10-10]
vets also. I don't know if some of them are just bad at diagnosing efficiently, or if my efforts to help them out annoy them so much their judgment is clouded. I just detected enlarge lymph nodes in my 8-year-old Sasha, which must have been Thursday evening or Friday, and it took me Tuesday evening to get up the courage to get a vet to check her. I ended up going to Banfield because I just couldn't bear to take her to the places where I struggled to get good diagnoses and treatment for my other terminal dogs. Sasha had seen this vet before anyway, since he had stitched her ear while we were away on vacation. I was careful to just use terms like lumps with the staff and vet though, so as not to annoy anybody. And I asked the vet to please tell me those were just huge chewing muscles under her jaw. Nope. Lymphoma. He took an aspiration bx, but now that we know, we are noticing more and more bad signs, like she is kind of wheezing when she breathes. And the more places we check, the more lumps we find. But she still wants to play growly bump with us, and can briefly return play with Cedric. When I get down on the floor with her, she looks in my eyes and smiles like I'm the greatest person on earth. Cancer sucks.

Confession [2007-10-03]
That picture was actually taken in the NC mountains a couple of years ago. It was the trip where we took the Sasha and Misha and hiked. We visited an arboretum and this was a road that was part of that huge place. We failed to take the camera to Cedric's first visit to the dog park, so I subbed this end-of-another-October picture since I liked it. :o> It was another good time.

Not sure if this will work - [2007-09-30]
Slide show of Cedric that DH made.

Wow - that sounds like one of [2007-09-22]
those high-energy dogs. Thank goodness for me that Cedric is pretty laid back, especially since we think he's young.

I'll do it. I walked him last night [2007-09-22]
along with Sasha. He is not a big puller, a bit of a wanderer and sniffer, but he was happy to follow Sasha's lead and all of my gentle directions, which is fantastic! There is no need to give strong corrections to this dog. When we came to a corner and had to turn right and cross the street, I told Sasha, GEE (which means turn right in musher's terms), and she instantly turned right. To my surprise, Cedric instantly followed her. To me this means that he is very happy to have strong leadership and has no need to be a dominant dog (although as Cesar Milan says, if a dog feels a void in leadership, he will always try to take over and fill the position). So for this reason and the other training I have started and seen quick improvement, this is going to be a very easily trainable dog. Yay!

sweet [2007-09-21]
Good to hear you smiling again Hayseed......Cedric is so cute Misha...He and Sasha are gonna keep you busy!

Well, it's bedtime. We debated [2007-09-19]
about crating him or just baby gating him, with me pushing for crating him but DH not liking the idea, and then Cedric settled the issue by finding the loose foot from a cabinet and taking it to the dog bed to gnaw on. I was sure I'd already picked up all the bones they hadn't consumed (the rawhide ones), so I went right over to see what this was and discovered it was wood. He gave a low growl as I tried to take it, but I never flinched and got it away. The growl was the only display, and now he knows that doesn't work on me. He is now safely crated and only cried for 30 seconds. He's got a safe but long-lasting treat bone in there, so he'll be fine.

You go Misha! [2007-09-19]
Congratulations on your first night with him! They just love to test their boundaries don Glad to hear you weren I know I sure can be intimitated at times by strange animals. I also crate too, much to the shagrin of PETA-like folks. It is a wonderful tool and every night when we get ready for bed I say, In the hut and the two little guys go RUNNING in there to play with all their toys and each other in their little den. They absolutely love it and are only locked in it for the night so I can guarantee there won During the day I leave their door open to the crate and they still go in there just to hang out and play with the stuff in there or just take naps together. Darndest thing. Feel free to e-mail me again if you have any pictures you want to share with us...I Congratulations again Misha and Cedric!

I wish to report my hubby [2007-09-19]
for the crime of stealing the affection of our foster dog, Cedric. DH is home sick and I think it's a scheme to spend time with Cedric (though he would never admit this!) to win Cedric's heart over to love only him. How did I lose control ... LOL.

WELCOME HOME Cedric! I hope you'll be very happy with Misha and her family! God bless !! Jan

Hayseed was kind enough to email [2007-09-17]
and post a pic for me above. Post back and let us know when you bring Cedric home!

Many thanks, Hayseed! [2007-09-17]
I Most days, this board is my main source of entertainment (except for Jake now, of course) or consternation depending on the subject, and you are always a bright spot in the day... For anyone interested in another puppy story, we adopted him from a shelter, had been put there by a family who decided they didn He We had seen atan one at a house for sale that we were looking at(I thought it was some kind of terrier or something), and myDH fell in love with that dog, so I did some searching...and there he was. About dropped my teeth when I found on searching what breeders are getting for these dogs... as somebody pointed out to me, they are just mutts, after all...But I was happy to find him at the shelter, have always adopted dogs like that,am always amazed at the wonderful animals that get dropped off. My wonderful Boxerhad been rescued from a puppy mill situation and many moons ago I had a little German short-hair pointer/Brittany mix that was very ill at first, didn I dontrim the first time (dang thing cost more than my haircuts!! so I guess the scarf was part of the doggie-do package.) Wish I could find the pic that stole our hearts at the shelter, like Misha Anyway, thanks again Hayseed, you rock!

New dog pickup is Tuesday! [2007-09-16]
They say it's a done deal and I apparently am going to need to find the shelter 2 towns away (it will be character building for my fear of getting lost) and pick him up. He has to be neutered before then, poor baby! But I don't have to pay the bill because the rescue pays it. Yay! Wonder how long those male hormones will be in his system. This is going to be interesting! I hope he likes Sasha and she likes him. I need to clean the kennel that's in the garage so he can sleep in there. No telling what kind of mischief might be usual for him. My life is about to get interesting, LOL. Oh I hope he's a talker. Woo woo! Oh, and the rescue hasn't had good luck with the name I was thinking of (Juneau), so I was thinking of Cedric. It means First Choice or Loved, and it is also a name from Harry Potter. Do you like it for a Siberian?
