I'm wondering if anyone has experience with this. Exercise. sm [2008-01-23]
Okay. I am overweight by about 30 pounds. A week ago I got back on the treadmill and started walking/jogging for about 20-30 minutes - 5 days a week. This is week 2. I Will get on the treadmill in a few minutes. I haha Don I know it I have NO desire to change my eating habits. None. Zilch. In fact, don I don I don I do like an occasional Coke. I like chocolate. I otherwise eat healthy, but until Jan of this year I have done NOTHING in the way of exercise for years. Just kept having kids and sitting on my bum.
When can I start seeing results and do you think that I can see results by working out this much and NOT changing my eating habits. It I can And what makes it worse (the eating part) is when I fail (which is EVERY time) I beat myself up afterwards and feel worse than before. With this jog/walking thing, I feel GREAT. I feel more energy already and I actually am enjoying the time alone doing it.
Anyone have experience with this?
You can but no one else can? Exercise those rights [2008-01-20]

Get some exercise [2008-01-17]
It will help tremendously. I start to get tired if I go more than a day or two without running on my treadmill or hitting the weights at the gym. It will help tremendously. As someone else said, it might not be a bad idea to get your thyroid checked out.
I sit on exercise ball .... sm [2008-01-10]
and I balance just fine with foot pedal. I dont Sometimes I switch out my chair and my ball. Just depends on how my bottom is feeling. I too sometimes sit with my leg folded under my other leg while working, but that I have really bad vericose veins (that's another story!)
good luck!
Same one every year - exercise & eat healthier! [2007-12-21]

How much exercise have you had in the last 3 weeks? [2007-05-25]
The kind of exercise where your rib cage actually has to expand as far as it can go?
That kind of exercise causes relaxation, and relaxation is an antidote for anxiety attacks.
I was also helped by learning relaxation with biofeedback and I also take Effexor. Not everybody can take that though.
exercise question [2007-05-11]
I am 48 years old, been sitting on my rear for years doing MT. I have exercised for years, but always sporadically. I don I I have recently taken up walking/jogging, but admit I can only jog for about a minute, then have to go back down to walking, then after I I My question is, is this really a good overall exercise to help me tone? I Anybody have any advice? Thanks!

Thank you very much! I appreciate the tip.
Because Americans want a quick fix [2008-11-22]
>>I don't understand why people will take a med if its something that will run its course and your body will take care of.
They don't want to suffer with ANYTHING - illness or otherwise. It's all about instant gratification. Fix me now, with the least amount of effort on my part. A pill for weightloss, a pill for depression - suck out my fat. How many people take drugs for diabetes or high blood pressure or cholesterol - when diet and exercise would fix the problem? I understand that not everyone with those problems can be fixed without medication - but many, many could be.
No, I don't think they're hidden from us at all [2008-11-22]
Most people know, or can discover with a little research, that most of the things we get are easily preventable or cured, over time, by our own immune systems. Taking antibiotics for a cold is not only foolish, but dangerous. And not just for you, but for all of us. Itminor things.
The best care you can give yourself, besides preventive care (stay out of the sun, you eat right, exercise, if you etc etc) is supportive care. If you donINTRUDER!!! ATTACK!!!
Ideally I should be able to deal with my pain by growing my own natural remedies, but the Federal Government tends to frown on a garden full of opium poppies and marijuana plants. Willow bark just donhidden, they're just not encouraged or advertised. Being a heathen gives me a distinct advantage in the area of herbalism as we tend to try traditional remedies before running to the doctor. Even if I'm fairly certain that about half the time the traditional remedy makes you feel better because it's loaded with alcohol (in our case).
No, drugs do NOT take too long to make it to market. They make it too quickly. Before AIDS hit it could take 30 years for a new drug to make it to market. Now they're being released so quickly they've not had time to test for long term effects. Vioxx is a good example of what can go wrong with that one. Who would have guessed using it long-term could kill you? It definitely damages your heart. That's just one of many drugs that were fast-tracked, that shouldn't have been, and that are now the focus of class action lawsuits after people have been injured or killed due to lack of long-term clinical studies. Are there drugs that made it to market quickly that have proven safe? Of course there are. Unfortunately there's no way for us to tell in advance how thoroughly something has been tested, how long it spent in R&D or how wide-ranging the clinical trials may have been. So we're all guinea pigs now.
It really is a balance. I feel that for myself, itpersonal responsibility and we seem to have a dearth of it in this country.
Sorry you are feeling so down (sm) [2008-11-20]
First of all, relax. You need to go to a doctor and get on an antidepressant? No insurance? If you can get the money to go to the doc for one visit, you can get them to prescribe an antidepressant that is on Walmart's $4 list and get it for $4 a month. Call United Way and see if they can direct you where to get help with your rent. Don't worry about whether or not you have cable, you'll be okay without that unless you need it for your job? Don't worry about not being able to give Christmas gifts...just explain that you don't have the money. People will understand and your grandson can have it explained to him. I have the same isolation issues that you do because of the job. Can you go to a temp agency and see about getting a job outside of your house so you can be around people more? There is a website called Exercisefriends.com where you can meet people in your area who want exercise buddies, maybe just someone who is starting out trying to walk every day or something like that (not sure what your fitness level is). Or advertise on Craigslist for a walking buddy (but be careful of course when first meeting the person). I met one of my best friends this way and have known her for 4 years now. If you want an email buddy feel free to email me. I think everyone is struggling right now and it is hard. I would be happy to have you vent to me via email all you want. :-)
berry or fruit juice for diets sm [2008-10-29]
Heard the free trial offer for the acai berry (sp) on line is a farce because once you give all the info and agree to the low shipping charge, you are locked into an automatic charge to your credit card of 80 plus dollars. If you try to contact them, the phone number provided is non-operational and you are stuck. Is this berry product available in retail stores? Also, anyone find any pomegrant (sp) juice helpful and who has the best price on it? Need to lose some winter weight and it's not even winter yet. Kind of hard when you sit all day - I know, I know - diet and exercise! Told by my cardiologist to walk but recuperating from surgery, so not that active. TIA

who also has lost their life. Been at home home now for many years and the same thing has happened to me. Husband works late four nights a week. Love my children more than life and the thought of disrupting their lives makes me go into a panic attack. I used to have friends, wonderful friends of 30 years, but don't anymore. One went off the deep end after a divorce from an absolutely horrible man and hasn't spoken to me since and the other divorced a horrible nasty 500 pound slug and has since remarried and now has a new life and doesn't want to hear it with me anymore (even though I was there for the both of them during their horrible marriages divorces.) I have a large family with many sisters but they are so utterly cruel and narcissistic, the only way you can stand to be around them is you either have to be just like them or if you don't mind being destroyed because that is what they do. They destroy people including their family members. I, too, used to exercise every day walking four miles a day and exercising at the gym for about 1 1/2 hours a day. Lost 75 pounds and felt FABULOUS and had incredible stamina, but that has since all gone away and now I am right back to where I was. I have no money. My husband doesn't necessarily spend money entertaining himself but we are not financially together (and not because I am financially irresponsible but mostly because he is controlling and a wife with no money is not powerful). I have been applying for jobs outside of my house but haven't gotten one yet and unemployment in my state is through the roof. I feel as though I have lost my life. My children are getting older but my oldest who is in the 9th grade has ADHD and is very immature so to leave him for long periods of time during school vacation could be disastrous especially since he will be home with his two younger siblings who are 13 and 11. They fight unlike any other children you have ever seen. At the same time, I have an extremely difficult husband to live with who, most of the time, only sees his own wants. I sit here in my house (that we rent) every single day and try to figure out how to get my life back without endangering my children. My youngest also has severe ulcerative colitis and is probably looking at surgery in the next year to have his colon removed, which that in and of itself presents its own challenges to say the least. I don't know how I am going to get him or me through that one. I feel as though I have stress oozing from every pore in my body. I have nightmares when I sleep of becoming sick with cancer or my kids becoming sick with cancer. I have nightmares of being murdered or of someone else being murdered. I have nightmares of my sisters doing their terrible deeds to me. I, too, already take an anti-anxiolytic/ anti-depressant which does help but when you live like this, drastic measures need to be taken to get this straightened out and not just medication. I apologize for not being much help to you but I thought you needed to know that you are not alone and that there are others out there who are having the same problem. Just remember, this is a temporary situation and someday it will get better. That is what I keep hoping for anyway. Good luck to you.
Thanks for your suggestions....I do need to get some (sm) [2008-10-24]
good info and some exercise. Also I know you are right that getting up and getting a shower first thing would help me tremendously. I always fit my shower in sometime during the day but when I worked outside my home and took one first thing it always made me feel better.
Tolerance [2008-10-16]
This is my personal stance, my personal opinion and I am allowed to have it as much as anyone else is allowed to have theirs:
I do not have to, nor will I, be tolerant toward behavior that I believe to be fundamentally wrong, anti-God, anti-Christian and morally corrupt. It is MY RIGHT notto like it, not to tolerate it, and not to put up with it.
I do not punish or shun those who practice lifestyles that I am morally opposed to; however, I will not ever say that I agree with such.
Thank goodness my children are grown now but it is still the right of every parent to teach their child the moral principles they wish to instill. It is not the school's right, not the government's nor any self-proclaimed group's authority to act on to ensure they are accepted equally.
I don If we are going to pressure-cook the minds and morals of everyone regarding alternative lifestyle tolerance, we might as well exercise the same toward other groups with somewhat alternative lifestyles such as criminal behavior, etc.
How and what we think as individuals are our God-given and government-protected right.
definitely Australian Shepherd [2008-09-27]
they are intelligent, sensitive, kind yet capable of protecting well, very responsive...but they are not for everyone (for their need to be with you a lot, need for exercise, etc)
Feeling neglected [2008-09-21]
I'm guessing these children are feeling neglected and frustrated. The older one has more power to act out (and maybe more the personality for it), but something needs to be done to make them both feel more secure.
It would be nice if they both get involved in a learning/exercise activity (such as martial arts) to build their self-esteem.
Since you are a grandmother, you need to have a serious talk with your child about their parenting and the needs and safety of those children.
My 50 year-old DH is a grumpy old man! [2008-09-17]
If there is a male menopause, I'd say it's manifesting in general grumpiness in my hubby. Ugh! Everything seems to be the focus of some complaint from him. A pen runs out of ink, he grumbles and curses. Can't find his keys? Of course someone else took them and he grumbles and complains. Forget things like bills, or home repairs, or anything that really truly is irritating. His head might explode. When I ask him why he's so grumpy, he gets grumpier and grumps about my saying he's grumpy! Can't win! Sometimes I can coax him into a smile by imitating his grumpiness. He knows he's a complaining old coot these days. He gets regular exercise (runs 5-10 miles a night), eats well, balances work with rest. The kids are grown and we have our freedom. I can't figure it out. He should be happy and relieved. Instead, he's doing his very best imitation of Walter Matthau.
Is College Worth It? [2008-09-08]
As parents pack their youngsters off to college, they might ask themselves whether itAmerica
The U.S. Department of Education statistics show that 76 out of 100 students who graduate in the bottom 40 percent of their high school class do not graduate from college, even if they spend eight and a half years in college. That's even with colleges having dumbed down classes to accommodate such students. Only 23 percent of the 1.3 million students who took the ACT college entrance examinations in 2007 were prepared to do college-level study in math, English and science. Even though a majority of students are grossly under-prepared to do college-level work, each year colleges admit hundreds of thousands of such students.
While colleges have strong financial motives to admit unsuccessful students, for failing students the experience can be devastating. They often leave with their families, or themselves, having piled up thousands of dollars in debt. There is possibly trauma and poor self-esteem for having failed, and perhaps embarrassment for their families. Dr. Nemko says that worst of all is that few of these former college students, having spent thousands of dollars, wind up in a job that required a college education. It's not uncommon to find them driving a taxi, working at a restaurant or department store, performing some other job that they could have had as a high school graduate or dropout.
What about students who are prepared for college? First, only 40 percent of each year 45 percent never graduate at all. Often, having a college degree does not mean much. According to a 2006 Pew Charitable Trusts study, 50 percent of college seniors failed a test that required them to interpret a table about exercise and blood pressure, understand the arguments of newspaper editorials, and compare credit card offers. About 20 percent of college seniors did not have the quantitative skills to estimate if their car had enough gas to get to the gas station. According a recent National Assessment of Adult Literacy, the percentage of college graduates proficient in prose literacy has declined from 40 percent to 31 percent within the past decade. Employers report that many college graduates lack the basic skills of critical thinking, writing and problem-solving.
Colleges are in business. Students are a cost. Research is a profit center. When colleges boast about having this professor who has won a science award or that professor who has won the Nobel Prize, very often an undergraduate student will never be taught by that professor. It is a bait and switch tactic and very often your youngster will take classes not taught by a professor but taught in large classes by a graduate student. Faculty who bring in large grants are more highly valued than faculty who teach well. Teaching excellence is so often undervalued that the late Ernest Boyer, vice president for Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, quipped that, Winning the campus teaching award is the kiss of death when it comes to tenure.
Parents and taxpayers cough up billions upon billions of dollars to the nationbait and switch, confer fraudulent degrees and engage in other practices that would bring legal sanctions if done by any other business. There is little or no oversight of the nationChoosing the Right College (http://isi.org/college_guide/choosing_right_college.html).
I'm not really wasting time during the hours [2008-09-05]
that I am awake - it If I could sleep 4 hours a night, I could:
- always have the laundry caught up.
- always have my house clean.
- cook supper each and every night.
- keep my flowers weeded and watered.
- read at least a half an hour a day.
- spend time in devotions and meditation and prayer.
- exercise.
If I could accomplish these things throughout the week, then I could have each and every weekend FREE!I feel like I could gain my life back if I could somehow figure out this sleep thing.
Thanks everybody for your input.
Wow -these are excellent suggestions [2008-09-05]
Thank you, thank you, thank you. I am 49 years old (feel 69 right now). I'm 189 pounds and lead very very sedentery life. No kids, no activity. I know I need to do some activity but I just can't get motivated. However, I do have an exercise video called Callanetics...very low impact aerobics (slow movements with very relaxing music), so tonight I pulled it out and starting tomorrow going to do that at the end of the work day.
I too have to have my caffeine and one day without it I sure can tell. Isemi-organic (at least that's what I call it). I refuse to take any medication (not even aspirin when I have a headache). I'm trying to go vegetarian (or more vegetarin) but I do like meat. Just got to lose weight and a bit more exercise.
Imy friend and I canbaby producing machine, yet I'm cursed with these blasted periods. Okay - sorry, that's more of my own emotional problem I have to deal with. I just want the periods to end. Your suggestions of herbal supplements are most interesting and I will be looking into them. Thank you again for your post.
How do you psych yourself [2008-09-04]
I I find myself constantly coming to this board. Sometimes I just feel I can I just got my first cup of coffee so that will help, but how do you psyche yourselves out to begin working a full day of typing, typing, typing, and more typing, and if you don I So I have to work. I have no choice. But I am so so tired. I I do like my job compared to others I have had, but I think I just feel so burnt out and wonder how other MTs begin their days. PS - I am not a morning person at all. I have tried, tried, tried to get up at 6 am to begin with a walk or some type of exercise but I can Is there a vitamin or something that would perk me up maybe?
But obesity IS life-threatening. I type lots of that stuff - [2008-08-23]
and for the most part the psych. evaluation is more to be sure the person has not only the desire for the operation, but the support in place to help them through the difficult time afterward. It's not a walk in the park, not only is it major surgery, but there are lots of eating problems afterward. Too much food, or too much fatty or other hard-to-digest food, and they can become quite ill. They also have to begin a diet and lose a certain percentage of their weight before they get okayed for surgery. I think in part to make them safer to operate on, but also to begin to change their eating habits. After the gastric bypass, one still has to watch what they eat so as not to regain weight. But of course the bypass helps with how much they eat - because the stomach is a lot smaller. Still, if all the requirements are in place, I think for many people GP is much preferable to dying of other diseases caused by obesity. It also can make it possible for them to exercise and build up their cardiovascular system, further improving their health.
i would recommend something different, [2008-08-19]
like calorieking.com It focuses on the nutrition as well as weight loss. but you don if you like it, subscription is $55/yr. and their site has LOTS of info, recipes, forums, etc. i did that the first year and learned alot; didn't work at it consistently and lost 15 lbs still. now i am just doing the food/exercise journal with their best little calorie book, for way less $ and that is working for me. but rather than 'diet' (i hate that word!)you want to make changes that are something you can live with, permanently.
We love Dance Dance Revolution [2008-08-13]
even my DH who doen't like to dance. It is a lot of fun and we Get some exercise in as well. Would love to try Guitar Hero!
Another fun video game sm.. [2008-08-11]
Is Wii Fit. It It has yoga, some strength exercises, aerobics (running in place). I live in the South, and it's nice to exercise in my house with the air conditioning.
My sis has a Wii and the bowling game is great.... [2008-08-11]
you Get some exercise, can have a drink or so while playing, and don't have to smell like cigarettes when you get home. Or spend any money on shoes etc. LOL.
There is an honest way of doing it as well. [2008-08-11]
H went to a farm sale and they were practically giving away scrap iron. He bought me an exercise bike for $2 and they threw in a bunch of it in with that exercise bike. Someone came by and asked if they can have it for scrap and H gave it to them.A personcan find stuff on the side of the road like hub caps, car batteries, copper wire. Isaw a mattress laying out on the sideto the road as well. H has a lot of scrap in the backyard he needs to take down.
Unfortunately, there are some that make this a dishonest business. It has been rumored that the city has had missing sewer caps. Someone took that down to the scrap yard. Gosh, what people won
Yes, it is amphetamine, (speed). sm [2008-08-08]
You will lose weight, your body will be jittery, just like you were speeding. You will talk very fast, can't sit still, dry mouth, sometimes pains in your stomach, and when it wears off you will be very very tired.
You will lose weight fast, but it is difficult to maintain that loss.
I lost 40 pounds in 2 months, and guess what, I gained it back very quickly, even while staying with my exercise routine. Phentermine is very addicting, also. If you have an addicting personality be careful.
Personally, I would never take diet pills again. They have a tendancy to cause pulmonary hypertension also and make your teeth brown. Just like a speed freak.
I have managed to eat right and exercise routinely, as well as drink at least 10 glasses of water daily, and lost weight and kept it off, years later, after trying phentermine.
Every one is different. Maybe it will work well for you and you will not have any side-effects.
For me, I was hyper as could be, cleaned my house every day from top to bottom. I didn't know what the heck to do with myself. It was very difficult to sit and get my MT work done.
Good luck in whatever you decide. Have you tried that Wii Lu tea (or Wu Li tea) not sure how to spell it. I hear that is the new weight loss thing now.
Thank You [2008-08-08]
I want to thank all of you for your input on this diet pill. I know I would be jittery then, because anytime I have taken such a medication I get that way, and I absolutely hate that feeling. I think I will steer away from Phentermine. I have enough health problems (due to being overweight), that I do not need to add anymore
I am about 160 pounds overweight, have high blood pressure, and have to use a CPAP machine due to sleep apnea. I had a major foot surgery over a year ago and my foot still is not right. Due to the foot issue it is hard for me to do much exercise, a lot of walking, etc. Of course, that does not help much either.
I feel so trapped by my weight!!! I could cry , and have cried.
I cannot afford bariatric surgery, and to tell you the truth I am afraid of it, especially after the problems with my foot after the surgery. It seems to older I get I do not bounce back after surgeries very well.
Again, thank you for your input it is greatly, greatly appreciated.
Some suggestions...sm [2008-08-06]
I would enroll her in a good basic puppy obedience class. She sounds like a typical fun-loving, high-energy pup, but youclose to full size, just with some filling out to do). Plus, she will soon be entering into what I LOL
She just needs to learn some need to learn how to communicate w/her in a way she can understand, which a goodtrainer can help you with. Learning the basics (sit, stay, down, come, heel) will come in very, very handy - esp. I mean, think about it, she can Teaching basic obedience to your dog issort of like teaching manners to your kids, can you imagine how insufferable they
Ask your vet if there are any training classes locally that he/she recommends. You can also try the Assoc. of American Pet Dog Trainers: http://www.apdt.com/ Find someone who uses fun, positive, dog-friendly methods, and avoid anyone who wants to useforce, yelling, hitting, pushing the dog into a sit, drilling the same command over and over, etc. Do some research before deciding on a trainer, because anyone can hang out a sign and call themselves a dog trainer - doesn Training s/b a fun, bonding exp. for you and your dog. In fact, you might want to look into something called If you can
And personally, Iwould not play tug-o-war with her, at least for now. For some reason, that game seems to get dogs pretty wound up and *Maybe* later, if she learns to release the toy on command when you say
We train our dogs from the start that they are never allowed to put their teeth on us, ever, but some people allow the dog to do it if they do it gently, in play. I just find it easier to not let them put their teeth on us at all, but that We also teach our dogs that they are not allowed to jump up on anyone unless the person gets down on the floor and calls them up (by patting the chest). They doncontrol untilthey settle down.
Please don- far from it! I often For instance, there is a dog toy called You can fill it with peanut butter and kibble, freeze some beef broth and kibble it it, all kinds of things, and give it to the dog to keep them busy. I love it! If you go to their website, they have recipes.
My other big suggestion is: Exercise, exercise, and more exercise. Dog people have a saying: I can tell you from personal experience that this is soooo true. My dogs can be so obnoxious when they haven A dog that gets plenty of exercise, both physical exercise and mental exercise (in the form of training where the dog is having to concentrate which wears them out mentally just like it does us) is a good dog, because ita dog that doesnto get into mischief. Some ideas:
1. Treadmill (supervised, of course).
2. Walks on a leash with the dog having to heel and wearing a backpack that has something it for a little weight to wear him out a little.
3. Running, playing, wrestling with another dog of similar size and energy level (with a friend's dog or at the dog park maybe?)
4. My absolute, all-time personal favorite (because ILOL): Riding around the neighborhood on my mountain bike with my dog running/pulling alongside, attached with something called a Springer, which you can find here: http://www.springerusa.com/ (I use a better harness than the one that comes with it.) This is a great way to exercise your dog, IMO. Be careful, wear a helmet, let the dog set the pace.
You have a high-energy breed, so... enjoy!
If a dog doesn't have anything [2008-07-30]
to do, he will occupy himself. His thing is barking, which isn't fair to the neighbors. I had a neighbor who'd let his laborador bark for hours on end while I was trying to work. Almost drove me insane. To catch a break I'd occasionally take a rawhide, stuff all the cracks with peanut butter, and throw it over the fence. Ah, blessed peace for a while.
Cesar Millan has a website. I'm sure you can get lots of ideas there. It's all about exercise, discipline and then affection. You have to communicate your leadership and also use up his energy and teach him what it is you expect of him.
